Barrie, the Scotch novelist once said that, HThe life of every man is a diary in which he means to write one story, and writes anotherg and his humblest hour is when he compares the volume as it is with what he vowed to make it H The beginning of your life story is being written now as you complete your high school career and make your plans for the future. To say that I wish you a successful future is not just a glib comment. Success to me is measured in terms of how well each of you will do the things you are most capable of doing. Being successful in this way will give you the great est personal satisfaction and you will make your greatest contribution to society. Success thus defined will not come easily. Henry Wads worth Longfellow points out that, HThe heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight. But they while their companions slept were toiling upward in the night.H Longfellow implies that you must give up present comforts for greater things in the future. Many people are not willing to pay this price. Each of you must make a de- cision at this point. Elbert Hubbard makes this keen analysis, HOne machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man.H The extraordinary man is the successful man. This is true in any walk of life.
