Board of Trustees Time marches on, and in its wake a university stands as a fitting and last- ing memorial to the enduring effort and tireless energy of the organization to which greater Butler owes its ex- istence. In 1920 when the Board of Direc- tors of Butler College of Irvington decided to move from the Irvington campus, a committee of four was authorized to pick the new site. Will Irwin, Arthur V. Brown, Emsley W. Johnson, and Lee Burns, who are still members of the Board, chose Fairview, in 1922, as the site for Butler Uni- versity. Today, through the efforts of John W. Atherton, board member and financial advisor of the university, and the million dollar gift of Arthur Jor- JoHN W. Atherton Financial Sccrctarv Hilton U. Brown Cliairuian of the Board of Trustees dan, Jordan Memorial Hall stands as the cornerstone of the Butler of to- morrow. Despite the setbacks of a few years ago, the present Board of Directors took definite steps toward the material- ization of the original plans. Plans for the construction of a new unit and a building to house the College of Re- ligion, part of the original plans of the campus, are under consideration. As is stated in the charter of the school, there must be a board of direc- tors of the university, composed of 21 members to be elected triennially. The Board is the highest governing body of the university and directs the policies of the school, selects the president and associate officers, and attends to the general welfare.
