in Q, Cruise of The 54 HE 54 CRUISE of the good sh1p Butler TOWDShlp started back m mneteen forty elght when nt made short stops at the docks of Engle wood Connerton Fountaln Sprxngs Locust Dale Germanvllle and Glrardvllle There she got her crew and started the voyage that not a s1ngle crew member w1ll ever forget As days passed 1nto weeks and weeks mto mark1ng perlods we saw what fun the crews lmmed lately ahead or us were havxng as they neared shore We swore we would be loyal to the good sh1p would support everythmg that came from her hold As the flrst two years passed w1th thexr annual three months leave we st1ll looked for Butler Townshxp and that we dance and attend the games wh1ch were held IH the gym N SEPTEMBER OF F1FTY we pmked up some addlt onal members for our crew and steamed away Now we knew the ropes and what It meant to be sent to the number one brxg under Flrst Mate O Donnell Some of our more aglle members after workmg hard and labormg long made the V basketball team Yes we were startmg to get a name for ourselves' Agaln we recexved the customary three months leave and hovx we d1d en1oy nt' S WE TRAMPED up the gangplank ln Septem ber of flfty one we knew th1s was gomg to be an excltmg year We elected our offlcers to gulde us over our roughest tlmes and after the ballots were stored away we knew we had at our helm Sklpper ames Banket w1th Roger Metzmger second ln command The two able bodled asslstants were Eleanor McAndrew yeoman and George Madden quartermaster ThlS year we also had representatxon on the cheerleadlng squad as Rory McDonald ane Hepler and Mane Gushen were selected to f1ll vacancles whxch were created by the honorable dlscharge of three senlors Remember Hearts and Blossoms 7 ThlS was the thlrd annual operetta presented by the crew members from th1s and other crevxs It was chuck full of rom antlc songs and peppy dances and was held on the evenmgs of May thxrd and fourth LIST AS SOON as the cruxse began ln September 1952 we chose as our leaders ames Banket Roger Metzmger anet Hepler and Peggy Lane We needed somethlng to remlnd us of our cruxse so we voted to purchase class r1ngs wh1ch were tltled the Rocket Salllflg close to us and attached to our fleet for the fxrst txme were 65 voyagers comprlsmg the slxth grade Another added attractxon was the telev1s1on wh1ch was mstalled 1n the Maple Room on the lower deck Our operatlc presentatlon for th1s tr1p was Up m the A1r and was g1ven on Apr1l thlrtxeth and May flrst Usmg a garden scene w1th a wlshmg xxell occupylng the center of the gym we swabs had a swell ture swmg It was held on lfflay twenty second and was a dellghtful success As we watched our upper Cl3SS'I16 l practlce for thelr graduatxon and the rest of the thrllls we knew we would be domg the same thmgs next year HEN WE cor BACK on board shnp agam for the last spm on the Butler Townshxp we all knew that th1s vtas lt We elected our OEICCIS after a tough r1de wxth Captaln Roger Metzlnger at the helm and Kay Tho 1as ln the f1rst mate s berth Mar e Gushen was elected yeoman and Peggy Lane as quartermaster fllled out the roster Then we pulled anchor for that long awaxted crulse We planned pro jects the proceeds of XVl'1lCl1 would help to fm ance our class trlp to New York Candy was old dances held each of wh1ch contrlbuted to the fund so urgently needed Shore leave was granted ID September and we took a qulck trlp IH our rowboats to Pottsvllle where we wxt nessed judlclal proceedlngs at the county court house OW as sprmgtxme rolls around and the whxte caps of wxnter dlsappear the crew of the But ler TOWHShlp reluctantly stare at the horxzon just a few days off As we slght land we pre pare to stow our gear for that fateful day when vue too w1ll be dxscharged to sall over the sea of llfe m our own shxps To all who follow m our wake we wish a Bon Voyage' .if'53 ' 7 ' -f 'f X lx 7 Y Y I .
