While vivid colored autumn, gray-white winter, and pastel-tinted spring paraded in successive reign past the Butler Township High School, our story of the year was being enacted within that picturesque terra cotta brick setting, which is complemented by the green of the surrounding campus. In this ultra-modern high school, each student is offered a four-square education. The curricu- lum, which measures up to all current standards, includes academic, commercial, industrial arts, and home economic subjects. The extra-curricu- lar program with its variety of clubs and activi- ties provides an outlet for many interests and vitalizes the social side of school life. Adminis- trators and teachers agree that education for human relationship and education for citizenship are as important as the three R's. No longer is the student a passive observer, absorbing the ideas given in textbooks. When blue-skied September of 1950 gaily rang its bells, ushering in the new scholastic year, we knew that by following the guidance of our capa- ble administrators and teachers, we would continue to climb the heights of achievement in character building and in intellectual advancement. ,LIL as W 1:1- 25 2.6 'I 'Y 'D c 'I 7' 'r 59 ' e Q s 6' Li ak n'- l 3:5 ' 'K ' I1 ,X -a H NL a ,, 1' 'r E s ,il A 6 ' ' Q 4, xo ss 4- 5 Q 1 2? We recall the ride on the school bus, lunch periods in the cafeteria, basketball games, dances, movies. operettas, the work on the newspaper and yearbook, and classroom activities. In retrospect these pleasant times have, for each of us, a diierent meaning which will grow and deepen as we say good-bye to our carefree days and take our place in the world where greater responsibilities lie ahead. As time passes, we hope that this book will become a cherished possession--an album of happy, unforgettable memories. l WE . . . THE FOYER. WITH ONE SINGLE IMPULSE, WE TURN INTO THE OFFICE OF OUR RELOVED SUFERVISINO PRINCIPAL. MR. R. E. KEHLER has contributed a great deal toward the achievement of American ideals in Butler Township High School. He is looked upon with admiration by all students for his effic- iency, enthusiasm, and effective principles. As our super- vising principal, Mr. Kehler is always thought of as a true friend, good sport and trusted director. His kindness, pat- ience, and pleasant ways have impressed us through the years. Township opics EDITORS EDITORIAL STAFF Five times yearly, editors and report- ers of the Township Topics rack their brains for clever articles to please its many student subscribers. Inspirations are carefully jotted down on starched cuffs, candy wrappers, or anything handy. Just as in a bona fide newspaper of- fice, there are deadlines to be met, news happenings to be investigated, a n cl much confusion before each issue is lin- ally sent to the press. Advisers, Miss Haley and Miss Keh- ler, are to be commended for their able assistance and sacrificing of their spare time, The work of the Printing Vlub is ot' great importance to our school. The efforts and efficiency of these boys can not be underrated. Under the excellent, supervision of Mr. Kimmel, the members of the club learn the fundamentals ot' printing, such aszthe man- ner in which the type is ar-- ranged in the drawers: set-1 ting up ot' the type for print- ing, the proper method of printing the numerous arti- cles, and other skills which will be an asset to them if they continue this type of work, The club consists of stud- ents from various grades so that each year there are a few who have had experience and can help the new members. Some ot' the many products turned out are: the printing of basketball, baseball and dance ticketsg basketball and baseball schedules, invitations and programs for other numerous school and public functions. Without the services of this club the school would be at a loss, so we wish to extend our many thanks to this organiza- tion to let them know their efforts are appreciated very much by everyone. HT Y Av 17 XX. XX The Sub-Deb Club ot' Butler Township High School is an ac- credited member ot' the National Sub-Deb Club, sponsored by the liadies llome Journal. This club of eighth and ninth grade girls devotes meetings to mersonalitv develo iment, how to wear their hair and clothes, l . behave on dates, and get along with families and friends. A club out for fun, and fun only, is hardly one to be proud ot' in these days when I there's so much work to be done. Realizing this, the Sub- llebs each year participate in some worthy community project. For the past two years, in conjunction with the Future l llomemakers of America, the girls sponsored a clothing drive for distressed children of liurope. Sub-Ileh rinting Club Seated: H. After being hardened and smooth- ed, the object is painted with engobes or glazes. Next, the raw piece is placed in an electric oven until the tempera- ture reaches 1800 degrees. The oven is cooled for eight hours. Then the fin- ished Work of art is ready for display. SERVICE CLUB Under the supervision of Mr. O'Don- nell, the Service Club assists in supply- ing entertainment for the students. Their most important duty is running the movie projector. Feature movies are shown to the students about once every month. Another dependable task is showing movies at free period. These films are supplied by such companies as Westinghouse and General Electric. This club also takes charge of ar- ranging the stage for speakers and An- trim Bureau performers. if-1 ': ,, , ,ff X A' 9 'yo VP' o X X h 9- ,fr 'Y 'Y-fs X x9 'Y ax A. if . In the shop, students prepare themselves for work in the future by developing confidence in their ability in control and operation ot' the various machines and wood- working tools. The boys, under the careful and talented leadership of Mr. Helwig, test themselves for me- chanical interest and aptitude, and are taught minor operations in wood finishing, such as staining. shellack- ing, varnishing, and waxing. At, the end of the year, the proj- ects are put on display in the gym- nasium for everyone to see before the students take them home. The F. H. A. Club, an afliliation ot' the state and national organization, has for the past five years rendered valuable service to our school and Community. Under the competent leadership of Miss Mur- phy, whose personable qualities endear her to Students, these girls move quietly along in their many activities, leaving behind them the in- spiration for achievement and service. Included in this year's program were the Re- gion C conference at East Greenville High School, children's Christmas party, sending ol' gifts to the local hospital for distribution to the children, the annual F. H. A. clothing drive, and selling refreshments at basketball games. ' m Tlllh First row: W. Fertig, W. Kehler, R. Becker, T. Young, T. Sauers, M. McDonald, T. Price, J. Dillman, R. Wood, P. Bolinsky. The boys learn the rules of fair play and good sportsmanship in all their undertakings. They are constantly on the alert to learn new games, practice new drills, and other body-building exercises. Since the member- ship in this club is open to boys from sev- enth to twelfth grade, each year Mr. Wolf- gang has an overflow of eager and enthus- iastic aspirants. Gym work, such as calisthenics, tumbling, acrobactic maneuvers, boxing, and group games are popular and healthful activities of this organization. In the winter season, the boys are divided into groups which form an intramural basketball league. These teams and games provide a perfect outlet for the boys who have not the capabilities and experience to participate on the varsity in- terscholastic teams. Often times the boys are called upon to display their gymnastic abilities. This usually occurs when the pub-- lic is invited to Demonstration Night, when each department of the high school performs in conjunction with its particular subject.
