Throughout the school year these groups, under the capable direction of Miss Hehn. presented several musi- cal programs, both novel and enter- taining. To be a participant in these various programs. a student must be wiling to spend a large amount of his time vigorously rehearsing. This year the A I members of the musical groups con- tinued the practice of foregoing good times for themselves in order to con- tribute to the good times of others. The chorus does not mean all work, since much of the music is sung for the students' pleasure. The small vocal groupswthe girls' trio. and the girls' sextette-are us- ually chosen from these groups. The girls make many appearances during the year before various organizations in the communities. Smwnzrl l'lnu': lf. xillillll li. Ii4.'P5lll'l'. Y. Vllulii lil Xl. Cfaiinou. 15. RED FRUSS In a world such as we live in today the Junior Red Cross Council has taken an active part in various proj- ects for our boys in the service. The group was organized so that the meetings would widen the stu- dent's knowledge of this worthwhile work. With aroused enthusiasm be-- cause of war conditions interest in the organization reached its peak this year. We appreciate the fact that all the members of the organization although busy with their personal affairs, yet found time to make worthy contribu- tions. Some members of the club join- ed in making scrapbooks to entertain the soldiers, in making letter port- folios, and in knitting. One laudable fact about the Red Cross work done by the students is the personal enjoyment each individual seemed to get out of it. Smnrling: li. Kessler, NV. Nlilllllllllllt. imllllll. P. This year the staff decided to change the old form of the paper and surprised the students with a paper that was streamlined. The industrious staff has gone through all the harassing experiences connected with the publication of a school newspaper. Every major and minor event of the year received its proper place. Basketball games, par- ties, press conferences, school plays, scholastic achievements H- all these have made our journalistic endeavors worth while. To meet the deadline has been a nightmare at times, however, under the guidance of Miss MacNeill and Editor Constance Zeller the zest and fun that went with this experience has well repaid the work it has entail- ed. W'ith this aim in mind, commercial students strive for dis- tinction in their work. Butler High is as well equipped for commercial minded students as for those who have academic, homemak- ing, and music interests. The secretar- ial studies rooms are furnished with newest models in office equipment,- typewriters, dictaphone, check writ- er, bookkeeping, adding, and calcu- lating machines. Knowledge of the working technique and the manipula- tion skill acquired through the oper- ation of those mechanical devices give the students an advantageous prepar- ation for their future career. Under the guidance of Miss Haley who trains the group in the tech- niques of business activity, and hav- ing developed proper attitudes, habits and characteristics, Butler students are well prepared to face the prob- lems of the business world. HOME ECONOMIC Q The young homemakers in this course taught by Mrs. Graziano, plan well balanced, economical meals and keep a tidy, attractive home as well as design, make and model their own clothes. All this can be accomplished by students at Butler High through train- ing in the Home Economics Depart- ment. There the girls spend one term studying foods, planning, and prepar- ing meals. Another semester is devot- ed to the study of proper styles, pat- tern cutting, and the making of all the articles of milady's wardrobe. One of the features of the club each year is a dinner, given for the basketball teams, faculty, and other school officials. Other dinners, and teas of less importance are given throughout the year. Not only do the students apply the principles of their present experiences now in rendering assistance to their mothers, but they are also developing themselves to be good future home- makers. The girls journey- ed to distant points to direct the team followers in their vocal support. The support of the cheerleaders to the team cannot pass unnoticed. When any team wins a game the fans praise the coach and players. A team needs pep, extra-energy, to win a ball game. Where do they get this pep? From the powerful chant, Hold that ball! to the fighting command, You fight! Fight back, Maroon and Gold! Fight! Fight! Fight! This provides the necessary encouragement a team needs. Next year five of the group will re- turn. Butler High will remember the spirit and color that the cheerleaders lent the scenes of athletic contests. .K ,WM Q12 vw f 4,5 . 4 , 4 A as f .. 1 M ff ww mf v if . wr emcl fun um Xllnlmsl H lxwanlck ntl r L lum s Qlllrk ll Q .1 f ,L M K h ii? -W Lx. . . 1? , 's.V,,Q' NR I - if ' ' L.
