Mr. Gorrell shows Don Curry and the class how to do push-ups. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Our high school meets the State re- quirement by compelling each student to take a minimum of two years of physical education. During this time, the boys learn the importance of physical fitness. Tumbling, calisthenics, volleyball, baseball, and basketball keep the boys active and in- terested. Sportsmanship plays an impor- tant part in sports, too. Sportsmanship helps to mold character and is important to each student. Thanks to fine instruction everyone understands. Mrs. Wood instructs the girls on the correct procedure to follow. The girls of Butler High School are kept just as active as the boys, thanks to our physical education program. They too are compelled to take two years of physical edu- cation . Ringtoss, basketball, volleyball, badmin- ton, and exercises are just a few of the girls' activities. COMMERCE For the students interested in the busi- ness courses at our school, a very exten- sive commerce program is offered to them. This program helps to prepare the students for the business world. Included in the program are bookkeeping, typing, shorthand, and office practice. When a student is first introduced to a typewriter or a shorthand outline, a ca- reer in business seems bewildering and amazing. Each day spent in class famil- iarizes one with the business machines and methods. Soon the practices become enjoyable. When the courses are ended, each student realized the importance of the knowledge gained. Mr. Gibson heads the commerce de- partment .
