These next few pages are dedicated to us, the teen- agers of 1961. There are many ways we can recapture our youth, but one of the best is to recall our memories, those of our own private world at Butler High. We have fads and customs that in years to come will only be memories to us, and we hope that these next few pages will serve as a remembrance of our teenage life at Butler High. One of our memories of Butler High is our love for music. We will always remember the fun we had at noon dancing and all the record hops after the ball games. Other noon activities were noon league, gab sessions, or a quiet walk up town or around the school yards. ' We 70' One of our many Convos. Compliments of BUTLER SHELL ' E Girls aren't the only ones who have gab sessions as these five senior boys demonstrate. 6 A 1 S l l -qu One of the activities to pass the time at noon is dancing. A familiar scene at noon is a group of girls dis- cussing the latest school news. For boys there is always the noon league to occupy their One of the most familiar scenes at noon is the noon hour. students eating in the cafeteria. ff gfg 0 A group of girls display the latest styles of shoes. Discussing the latest fashions in sweaters for boys are David McClure, Dale Haynes, Terry Whitman, Jack Hof- fer, and Jerry McKean. 2 1406 We can never forget the pointed toes, boot shoes, and tennis shoes, matched skirts and sweaters, bulky knit sweaters, short skirts, button collars in ivy- league tradition, boys' sweaters of all size, shape, and color, the flattops and diicktails, ponytails and pageboys. These were all part of our favorite ward- robes in the year of 1961. Showing the latest fads for girls are Mary Pier- son, Linda Nichols, and Suzie Pratt. Compliments of BERCAW IMPLEMENT STORE an Z ' Another part of our life at Butler High were the exciting moments when our different queens were crowned. After the excitement of winning our first basketball game was the thrilling moment when the homecoming queen, Sandy Keller, was crowned. On a frosty night with the school gym filled with laughter and fun, our second queen was crowned. Sharon Wilson and Jerry McKean were crowned Cin- derella and Prince Charming. Last but not least our third queen was crowned for the year of 1961. Tamara Lowe was crowned re- lay queen. Although next year will bring new can- didates and new queens, we will never forget our queens for 1961. Smiling are Jerry McKean and Sharon Wilson as they are being crowned Cinderella and Prince Charming by Ronald Fisher. Linda Nichols, Ceorgianna Reed, and Carla McKee watch as Mr. Gorrell crowns Tamara Lowe relay queen. Compliments of WASSON TRUCKINC Om 70ofzZai Surprised but happy, Sandy Keller is being crowned 1961 homecoming queen by the 1960 homecoming queen, Marlene Kessler. Pride of the Juniors--the wearing of their class rings. One of the biggest highlights in the lives of all stu- dents is the day they receive their class rings. Finally after four years of waiting the day arrives when the senior pictures are taken. Proud Sophomores--A group of proud sophomores show off their class sweaters. Their next big mom- ent will be when they receive their class rings. Compliments of HENDRICKSON TAMDEM CORP. 10 All students look forward to the great day when they receive their class sweat- ers, class rings, and finally their senior pictures. They start out in their sophomore year with the class sweater, then in their junior year they receive their class rings. Then comes their biggest year and their senior pictures. Each item will help the students to remember his years at Butler High. Vw- X One - ' A big part in the life of a student at Butler High is working for his senior trip. This is a goal of every classy s to earn enough money to be able to go on a senior trip. In a student's freshman year, he just pays his dues. In their sophomore year they have the coat check. The juniors have the magazine sale, the concession stand, and the junior play. Seniors have paper drives, the sen- ior play and any other project they can get to raise money. Not only do these projects help to raise money for the senior trip, they also place responsibility and give experi- ence, all which helps the student for his future years. Paper drives can be fun as well as profitable the sen- ior class finds out. Without the Board of Education our public schools would have a slim chance for existence. We, Americans, proudly boast of our free education. The men elected to this office must be courageous, de- pendable, and trustworthy. The highest standards of education, as well as many other school functions, lie in the hands of these few men. The Board of Education establishes the policies of our school. We are grateful for the careful consideration the Board gives in arriving at each decision. Compliments of H. W. KNISELY 13 ifelen Helen Houton, Mr. Z.eller's able and effi- cient secretary, performs a countless number of duties. Very few of us really realize and appreciate all she does. She is responsible for keeping all school records and has the ability to cope with all problems. We could not get along without Helen or her efficiency. We Butlerites say Thanks to Helen for services well renderedg we are very proud and lucky to have her as a part of our school. Compliments of ZEIGLER INSURANCE AGENCY 2 issnsi on 1 mt. gem One of the most highly respected men in the community is our superintendent, Mr. Zel- ler. He is responsible for the fine management of Butler Metropolitan Schools. In his position, Mr. Zeller must see that our school follows state rules and regulations. Being the office secretary means real work, and there's plenty that Charlotte does in the high school office. She not only performs many duties in the office, but she also finds time to be friends with the students. Butler High School would never be the same without her friendly smile and happy face. Compliments of DeKALB COUNTY FARM BUREAU CO-OP ASSN., INC. 7761. .lame Well known around Butler High School is our principal, Mr. L. E. Lowe. As a friend or as principal, he can't be beat in the opinion of most of the students. He holds meetings, inter- views, makes announcements, and does many other things which keeps our school running smoothly. There's always more to do and he doesn't mind helping people with individual problems. Seniors can tell you this when college time rolls around. f The students of Butler High are very lucky to have such a principal as Mr. Lowe. melanie MR. Clattering dishes as well as pots and pans can be heard coming from the cafeteria kitchen very early in the morning where the cooks are working to pre- pare the noon meal. To Mrs. Jinnings and Mrs. Ginder goes a vote of thanks for a job well done. F Busy every minute of the day are our fine janitors. Whether it is a big problem or a small one they are ready to help in any way they can. They over see that the school is properly kept clean and heated. Not a day goes by without seeing them clean- ing up after us. No matter how much work we cause them, our janitors remain happy and never lose their patience with us. 759:44 Duval Responsibility, co-operation, an even temper, and a love for children go into the making of a good bus driver. All of these fine qualities can be found in the bus drivers of our school. Bus Drivers have the important job of bring- ing the rural students to school. They drive through rain, snow, fog, and sleet to complete their jobs. Their efforts are appreciated by all. Mr. Amstutz instructs the students at the board how to draw a diagram of the human digestive system. High School presents many every day problems for the average student of today. Some of our questions may be answered by the subjects we take. Biology teaches us about the develop- ment, structure, and function of plants and animals. Health and safety teaches a per- son how his body functions and how to care for it. Chemistry experiments, and taking a plastic body of a human being apart to see how things really work all add to our knowl- edge. Butler is equipped with a fine math program and staff. Under the guiding hands of Mr. Walter, Mr. Akey and Mr. Gorrell, our students are taught the different forms of math. The courses offered at Butler are: alge- bra, geometry, general math, and advanced math. As math becomes more difficult each year, the student 's mathematical knowledge is increased. With this knowledge, the students are prepared to solve many of today's complex problems. Compliments of BUTLER CANNING CO., INC 30 Om Preparing students for the business world isn't always an easy task. Butlers' fine commerical course is especially for those interested in business. Bookkeeping, Typing, and Short- hand are the three main courses offered in the business field. A11 of these subjects are offered to students of Butler High School. Since then our club has become a highly respected organization in our school and community. Membership to National Honor Society is based upon Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Only sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to join with the sophomores as probationary members. With such an honorable organization as National Honor Society, all students at Butler High School should be inspired to become members. As members, the ideals of the club should be kept foremost in their minds to do service to school and community. This is only one of the many ways to describe some of the tense moments had by the Windmill fans. Putting all they have into it, the yell leaders give the club that needed lift to make them yell when the odds are against us. The requirements to become a member of the booster club are as follows: you are to have a sea- son ticket to all the home games, back the ball team, and C0-Operate with the president and the yell leaders. Last year, along with wearing white, each mem- ber wore a green and gold vest. This tradition was carried out again this year, and it made our booster club a very outstanding club. We were fortunate, this year to have such capable managers as Robert Antrup, Nathan Houser, Butch Keller, and Sheldon Shafer. Their job is to keep uniforms clean and neat, basketballs polished, and help to soothe and bandage injured players. They help to keep the players in good spirits at all times. The cheerleaders did another fine job this year. They backed the teams through victories and defeats. Their leadership was an example of good sportsmanship. Compliments of KELLY PLUMBING AND HEATING Before you come to the last page of the Tropaeum, I would like to say a few words. We, the staff of 1961, have tried to make this year's annual a good one, one which everyone will like. I hope we have succeeded, for we tried to put into it something that would have a special meaning for each and everyone of you. We have spent many long hours trying to capture the life we students live at Butler High. It has been a wonderful experience to have been editor of the 1961 Tropaeum and I shall never forget it. I will always be thankful to those who made it possible. Without my staff, though, the Tropaeum would never have been completed. Words alone cannot tell you, DeLilah, how much help you have been. You have been a good copy editor and I shall never forget you. Sharon, we all know how hard you have worked as business manager. You not only worked during the school year, but also last summer. My deepest thanks go to you. To you Robyn goes a vote of thanks for a job well done. Working as subscription manager is not an easy task as we all know, and I appreciate your work more than I can say. You girls worked whenever I asked for your help and never once did I hear you complain. I couldn't have asked for a better staff. We all want to thank Mr. Sadler for his help. I especially want to thank you, Mr. Sadler, for always being there when I needed you. You were more help to me than I can ever tell you. A big thank you goes to the junior staff who were there helping when they were needed. Last but not least we thank our advertisers for without them we could never have raised enough money to have our yearbook, and finally to you, the students, for without you there would be no story of Butler to tell. Now as I near the end, Carrie Lou, I would like to say to you have a wonderful year next year as editor of the Tropaeum for 1962. I know you will do a good job.
