Down through the annals of time this yearbook will re- main golden in its memories. This year's Tropaeum has been set up on a musical theme, so that as the years go by and the fires of life remain only as a dying ember and the grey-haired reader goes strolling down our musical mem- ory lane, each keynote will ring aloud with golden memories of the reader's days at Butler High School. Life and the world may change but memories may not. Only their freshness and prominence in the minds of men may fade through the ravages of time. So years from now a member of a changed society will open this Tropaeum and Big Brass will live anew in the reader's fading memories. From the cleff sign to the end of the staff, this Tropaeum will make the reader's song of life complete. On May 25, 1955, fifty-one proud seniors will walk up to Mr. Lowe and receive their diplomas. This signifies that A Student has completed twelve years of schooling and is ready to take aplace in his community. No meri- torious awards are given for time and energy donated to make class projects a success. No signification is shown of the fun, disappointments, homework, lessons or know- lege which have been accumulated in those years. Aswe took our seats for the first time in an educational institution, we were scared and alittle apprehensive. The first thing we learned was obedience to the teacher. Nextcame the get-acquainted period. We played games, read stories, sang and participated as a group. We learn- ed our ABC's and began to read and print our names. We received our first report cards and took them home to face the music . We went on to the next grades, learn- ing to write, multiply, divide and write themes, among other things. Like other kids we got out of line once in awhile and a session after school or a talk with a board made us see the error of our ways and we speedily repented our misdeeds. Besides readin', writin' and 'rithmetic, we got in a little recreation. The annual Christmas operetta, the Easter egg hunts, the Christmas exchange, the Valentines and the plays we gave inclass were interesting deviations from scholastic worries. Then as we entered junior high school some changes were made. We would soon be in high school, almost adults, and we were supposed to act as such. Finally came eighth grade graduation and at last we were full-fledged high schoolers. The feeling of queasiness we had as we entered the halls of Butler High School for the first time as students soon disappeared. The choosing of classes with a glint of proudness that we had finally become high school stu- dents. The almost haughty acceptance we gave the new freshman as we became sophomores. The hayrides when perhaps we stayed out later than we shouldhave, but it was all in fun. The teacher who loved to give us home- work, and the homework we didn't do. The envious looks in the eyes of underclassmen as we showed off our class sweaters and class rings. The clubs and extra-curricular activities in which we participated, The scrapes we got into and the sessions in the principal's office. We weren't really mean just a little ornery. The horseplay at the old concessions stand. The lectures we got for being a little lazy. And at last the big day. We're seniors Gosh, we finally made it! The thrill of being on top. The paper drives, chili suppers and other money-making schemes. Our senior pictures, name cards, announce- mentsg it's a wonderful life! There are many other in- cidents that come to mind and they combine with what's already been listed to comprise our high school library. It's been a lot of fun and a lot of work butwe wouldn't have it changed! g Compliments of EYSTER DRUG STORE, Butler. 8 1 L.. - .... M .... - tl. ..., ..., ..,.. - KENNETH BAXTER B.H. This organization has been a very active one, setting up policies and passing resolutions. Every day a new problem arises, or someone has an idea for the betterment of the school or pupil. These are brought before the council for discussion and passed upon or dropped, as they deem the proper action. One of the more prominent achievements of the student council was the establishment of the monitor system. These monitors not only police the hall but act as an informa- tion bureau for all visitors. Atrack runner has a certain goal to attain, a challenge to meet. He knows that the reward he achieves will be only as great as he makes it. The class of 1954 might be likened to the track runner. Through the willingness that all showed to do their part in the paper- drives, concession work and production of two plays, and under the able leader- ship of their three sponsors, they were able to reach their goal--the senior trip. So on May 2.5, 1954, fifty joyous seniors and two sponsors piled into the elaborate Columbian and left with shouts of, The far east or bust! The far east of course was Washington D. C. and New York City. Naturally there was very little shut-eye on that first night. But bright and early on the morn of May Z6 shouts of, Land ho! went up and everyone rushed from the train to see who would be the first to touch Washington soil. Here they checked in at the spacious Congressional Hotel, whichis the exclusive home of many of the senators in Washington D. C. Their stay included a thorough trip around the capitol city. All were impressed with the beauty of the city and after visiting many historical places of in- terest, they once again boarded the train--this time for New York City. To one who has never seen it, New York City is an exceptionally impres- sive sight--one that's not easily for- gotten. Some of the sights they saw include: Fifth Avenue, downtown Man- hattan, the waterfronts, and various skyscrapers. Anyone who went on the trip could tell you that New York is a busy place. lt is a city that never sleeps--and neither did the seniors who went there. On May Z8 a tired group of seniors boarded the train for home. This is the third season for Mr. Cherry as the varsity coach, and it is through his excellence that the team performed as skillfully and as sportsmanlike as they did. This was especially evident at the Sectional Tour- ney. In winning eighteen games they defeated new- comers, Hicksville, New Haven, and Central Catholic, along with the usual powerhouses including Garrett, Concordia, Angola, and Riverdale. The first loss of the season was inflicted by the Railroaders of Gar- rett. This loss was in the first game of the Holiday Tourney after the team had reached a seven-game winning streak. Another winning skein, this one of nine games, including a thrilling County Tourney, was ended by a 58 to 55 defeat by Avilla at the Coliseum. This team had two of the greatest scorers in But- ler's history in Joe Wilson and Don Blair, both big factors in the tearn's success. The much needed hus- tle was inspiredby the aggressive senior guards, Don Tharp and Jim Parker, and the forward, Bill Sipe, to make the fast break and zone defense possible. In the drawing for the Sectional Tourney, Orland was matched with Butler. Orland's stall game failed but not without effort. After winning this one 52 to 38, Butler played Riverdale who had drawn the bye. After a slow start the mighty 'Mills proceeded to oust them 56 to 41. In the semi-final round, nervousness overtook them as they dropped a thriller to the Auburn Red Devils, 56 to 52, thus bowing out of the tourney. The Injuns of the 1954- 55 team enjoyed a tre- mendously succe ssful season in the ranks of the unbeaten. They played hard, fast, but clean ball all the way to win fifteen games against powerful opposition. They handled with ease teams such as, Central Catholic, Hicks- ville, and Columbia City, with only Fremont giving them a scare. They did not participate in the County Tourney as this was discontinued for sec- ond teams. An over- whelming record to be sure was the record of the men who will be next year's varsity. Before the season was completed, Donald Her- rick had been promoted permanently to the Var- sity to become akey back- er ofthe starting line-up. Clayton Derrow, a sopho- more, was brought back to the Injuns for additional experience and he became a strong rebounder, play- maker and scorer. The 1954 baseball team for the second time- in a row won the Tri- County championship with Mr. Cherry at the helm. Their fine record of six victories was marred only by their one loss at the hands of Angola. Angola lost one game also, but Butler won one more giving them a championship. Bill Sipe was one or the outstand- ing players, as he was a junior when he was voted Most Valuable Player. 6400 He not only pitched and won three as to only one defeat, but played out- standingly at first base when not on the mound. Left fielder Don Blair was the top hitter for the team, followed by Earl Shulz and Bill Sipe. ' 75 Wann Noon League was started this year as a full-fledged ac- tivity for the purpose of pro- viding noon entertainment for junior high and high school stu- dents. It was enjoyed by both participants and spectators with much enthusiasm, al- though trained skill was lack- ing. To start off the year vol- leyball was played by the six upper grades with the seniors as the most prolific winners, although they were beaten oc- casionally by the juniors and once by the teachers. At the start of the basket- ball season, with all attention focused on this sport, this game was taken up. The ad- dition of two baskets on each side of the gym,was made for accommodating four teams in- stead of only two. This of course doubled the entertain- ment. Every class participated at the start of the year with the juniors hardest of all to beat with their array of second team members. However, they were pressed hard at times by the Sophomores along with the talent packed by the eighth grade. The seniors were dropped due to an insufficient number of players. The teams were coached by some of the varsity basket- ball players who also doubled as referees. The Noon League experiment proved very suc- cessful in its first year and will undoubtedly be continued for years to come. They have proved to be very active and are a great asset to the girls' sport program. The G. A. A. plays every Wed- nesday during the noon hour. Their activities include volleyball, kick ball, basketball, and other sports to suit the season. There are thirty girls in the or- ganization with Mrs. Hampel as their sponsor. The officers for this year are: President, Beve rly Beard, Vice -President, Maryellen Van Wye, Secretary-Treasurer, Sharon Robi- netteg Point Keeper, Linda Smyth. The G. A. A.'s project for this year was a girls' night of basket- ball , in which the girls participated with two teams. Everyone enjoyed watching the girls version of boys' basketball.
