We hope to show in our yearbook how we have enjoyed doing things together, and we have chosen this idea as the theme of our book. Now we enjoy doing things together and hope to enjoy this even nnore in the years to come. We have learned the true values of friendship and the necessity of co-operation. These different things combined will one day lead to the suc- cess and contentment of our lives. They made our shining hours happier by contributing every- thing they could. It was their love that helped us break the barrier and become triumphant individuals, ready to face the future that lies before us. We know we shall never be able to repay them for their affectionate kindness. To show our appreciation for the many memorable things they have done for us, we have produced our little masterpiece, which we dedicate to our parents. After we be- came organized and adjusted to high school life, we found it wasn ' t really so bad. Thanks to our two wonderful spon- sors, we started earning money for our senior trip. Our only money-raising campaign was the Halloween Festival. Our social functions were two class parties and our clubs. After a year of hard work, we were ready for the se- cond step on our journey: Our Sophomore Year President Vaughn Billings Vice President JackNelson Secretary-Treasurer . . . Jinny Boyer Student Council .... Wilma Shultz and Tom Underbill Sponsors . . Mrs.Hannpel, Mr. Oberlin This year we becanne a little more confident. We started out with our class party as our first social activity. We joined several clubs. As Sophonnores we were allowed more money-nnaking activities, including the Festival and Ice Cream Social in the spring. We ended our second year with sixty-four menn- bers. During this year, we were also the proud owners of our class sweaters. Later we ordered our class rings. While waiting for our rings, we kept ourselves busy selling maga- zines. We also received the noon and basketball concessions, which brought in a considerable sum toward our sen- ior trip. In the spring everyone worked very hard to give a good production of The Robe. And thus we ended our third year. Our Senior Year President Audrey Miller Vice President Tom Underbill Secretary Dorothy Houser Treasurer Lenore Ringenberg Student Council . . Avis Armstrong and Donald Ginder Sponsors Mrs. Hampel, Miss DeWeese Mr. Dunten At last we started our sorrowful but joyful senior year. Again we gained two new sponsors who helped us finish our last and nnost important year of high school. We began the year by planning paper drives and the class play, Roonn For One More. L ' Dea Handy was our editor for the annual, and with Miss De- Weese ' s help, we did an excellent job. We earned the necessary funds and planned our trip to New York and Wash- ington D. C . Senior Trip™1953 On May 22, 1953, a group of lucky- seniors and their chaperones left for a week of enjoyment. The pastfour years they had worked hard to finance this trip. They left Butler on the Pacemaker for New York. Not many of the group got too nnuch sleep the first night out. At 9:50 Saturday morning they arrived at the Grand Central Terminal. Here they boarded a special bus for the Grand Tour of upper and lower New York City. Hotel Taft was their home. Sunday morning w as left open for church services. At 12:45 P.M. they met at Forty-Second Street Pier and from there they went on a sight- seeing cruise around Manhattan Island. They started Monday morning with an N.B.C. Studio-Television Tour and from there they went to Radio City Mu- sic Hall. At 2:30 P.M. they checked out of their hotel. Next was a tour of the Empire State Building Observa- tories. Then the group had some time to themselves. Some went shopping at Macy ' s; others went to look over Fifth Avenue or Times Square. At 11:30 A.M. they left for the Jersey City Terminal where they boarded the B. O. for Washington D.C. At 7:00 the next morning they were in the Gate- way Restaurant of the Union Terminal. After breakfast they went on a char- tered bus for the Public Buildings Tour. This tour lasted until noon. While on the tour they saw the Senate and House of Representatives in session. At 6:50 P.M. they left Washington D.C. on the Ambassador for Toledo, Ohio. Here they changed trains and started home. They arrived in Butler at 9:00 A.M. on the Lake Shore Limit- ed. This page sponsored by DR. E. V. BLUME, VETERINARIAN, Butler 47 Assembly Programs Dr. Lawrence Hess delivered an in- spiring lecture on vocational guidance. Later he talked to the seniors indi- vidually. Frances Kubik and Bill Souder gave speeches which they had written for the Armistice Day Program. Rev. Bill Pannell sang a few songs. The past commander of the American Legion also gave a short talk. Mr. Van Leuven talked to the school about soil conservation. He also show- ed a movie pertinent to this subject. The last picture is a scene from the Christmas Program presented by the chorus andmusic classes of all grades. This is one of the high school groups. This page sponsored by DICKERHOOF MOTOR SALES SERVICE, INC. Butler. 48 iJ Pep Sessions A vital part of any school activity always is the pep sessions. Here not only the value of teannwork but also the value of school and team loyalty is taught and learned. And as always the students voice their school spirit and their school loyalty strongly and loudly. As in any activity there nriust be a leader. Butler has four (picture bottom center). These are the school yell lead- ers. When the team needs their support, these four are never too tired nor too busy either to urge the team on, or to praise them when they go ahead. What are the rewards of such ef- fort and loyalty? In the picture at the center top is Mr. Lowe, the principal, presenting the county trophies to the captains and co-captains of the varsity and reserve teams. These trophies are the rewards for the year to the team and its followers. This page sponsored by INDIANA ASSOCIATED TELEPHONE, Butler and ANGO- LA BOTTLING WORKS, Angola 49 ! The Robe Stephanos L. May 23, 1964 Mrs. Esther Hampel Sponsor, Class of 1954 Richmond, Indiana Dear Madam: In regard to your letter requesting information concerning the graduating class of 1954, we have investigated thoroughly and we forward to you the facts we have been able to secure. During the course of the past decade. Butler has expanded tremendously and itnow numbers 40,000 in population. The class of ' 54 has long since emerged from there, but little have its members forgotten their school days. In- deed, all those graduates made early success, with the exception of a few happy-go-lucky ones, and have gained their life positions. In fact, they are the men and women who are responsible for the new ultra-modern high school building, located in the 1200 block of North Broadway. Statistics reveal that a widowed millionairess, Fran- ces Kubik Throckmorton, donated the capital for the school ' s erection. They called on the distinguished Leland Lyon, who has studied in Europe, to do the marvelous architectural work. There is a splendid school board--Mr. Gary Van Zile is president and he is ably assisted by the secretary, Terry Fisher. The treasurer, Lee Pierson, knows his business too--he ' s practiced bookkeeping in seventeen states. After some consideration. Miss Wilma Shultz was finally hired as superintendent. The community decided it was time that the school was run on the basis of a woman ' s angle. It ' s obvious why the new principal is Sir Kenneth Womack. Everyone knows he owns the Butler Bubblegum Factory I Two office secretaries have taken on their numerous tasks, using the expensive new office equipment. They are the inseparable Ruby Benard and Alice Dohner, whom everyone knows as the Girl Friday Twins. A whole new curriculum has been introduced to educate the students in cultural fields. A pro- fessional ballet dancer. Master Jerry Buttermore, has control over the dancing classes. The beautiful warm-water swimming pool has become the center of much strenuous instruction, for Miss Northeastern Association, formerly Pat Culler, has solemnly sworn to lead the life of a mermaid, since normal human beings bore her. Professor Jerry Wolff is conducting a series of experiments in the school science laboratory, and Larry Baron, whose mind is slightly impaired, is one of the professor ' s faithful guinea pigs. The professor ' s assistant, Dorothy Houser, is help- ing him with the perfection of a mechanical robot, the brain of which was taken temporarily from another subject, Burmell Walter. Don Burdick, the English authority, teaches all English classes from the English textbook he has written. To teach the algebra and geometry classes, Charles Baird, the mathematical genius, has been hired to make certain all mathematic students have enough homework. The city-slicker agriculture teacher. Miss Lenore Ringenberg, nationally known for her modern methods of farming, will undertake to educate an entire girls ' di- vision in the annuals of bug preservation. So that students won ' t loiter in the halls, Vaughn Billings, a trained zombi, will stalk up and down during all class periods. They are fortunate to have such a renowned music de- partment. For the first time in Butler ' s history, the high school will have a symphonic orchestra, conducted by Jack Nelson, the youngest maestro this side of Kansas. Rosella Healy has charge of the all -school chorus. Com- pulsory driver-training has been adopted by the school to reduce the student mortality rate. Olan Krontz, with the aid of his death-defying jetmobile, has been hired to teach them just how it ' s done. The school ' s complete new library will be overseen by the learned author, Donald Rosenberry, who lately finished his 299th novel. The popu- lar Ginderomatic typewriters have been installed by the school. They are the latest invention of Dr. Don Ginder, who will teach the typing classes on those speedy touch automatics. All shorthand classes have been brought up to date. Dictaphones and shorthand typewriters will be used--thanks to Miss Sharon Little, the teacher, who hates to take notes. When lunch time comes, everyone jumps in his jalopy and drives across the street to the school ' s drive- in cafeteria. The owners, HoUinger and Kessler, have leased their services for a year. They serve six-course meals every noon, and with Eton Healy ' s delicious recipes, they ' ll make a fortune. The history professor, Robert Sham- baugh, fled to his favorite country Egypt, where he dug open a pyramid and discovered priceless jewels. Dramatics is going over big with the public. To meet the demands for stage plays in Butler, the school has hired a HoUv- wood actor, handsome Robert Young, to direct all performances given by the dramatics classes. The members of government class are fortunate in having as their teacher Miss Barbara Lung, Attorney at Law. The nation ' s artists of tomorrow will be given the finest of an training by Phyllis Blaker, who has painted portraits of the world ' s most important men. Accounting will be taught by Harold Carr, who holds more than one hundred investments in the stock of the country ' s leading industries. Girls interested in being beauticians will be able to serve part of their apprenticeship under the able eyes of Lois Mack, noted hair stylist and make-up artist. Boys are taught barberina by Ted Warstler, whose specialty is Mohawk haircuts. Big-game hunter, Larry Moughler, will introduce a new course in which amateur hunters will learn to face any danger of wild beasts if they should ever meet one. New York news correspondent, Esther Martin, will broadcast a variety of programs the last half of every class period. This relaxes the pupils for their next class. The school chaplain is Father Paul Kaiser, who is familiarly educated in certain disciplinary areas. Dr. Helen Jane Bacon, licensed dentist, has been hired to perform certain.duties- -among them, that of making certain the teachers ' dentures stay put during lectures. Carroll Cook has accepted the position as coach of the school hockey team. Jackie Hamman, who holds the national women ' s heavyweight title, will coach the girls ' boxing team. TheHi-Y Club has many important functions still and is under the able advisership of Tom Underhill. The Camera Club is under the supervision of Don Szeman, a professional photographer. Catherine Vachon, the former baseball coach, has gone to live with the Eskimos. To cut down on janitorial expenses, an electric push-button system has been installed. Gene Bellamy will be the custodian. His secretary, Rosella Bax- ter, helps remind him when to push the buttons. Butler has yet to witness a grand occasion--that of the dedication of its new school next September. General William Krontz is being called all the way from the front lines to dedicate this great structure. Arrangements have been made for some top WAC officials, Major Avis Armstrong and Corporal Maureen Hill, to accompany him on his non-stop flight in one of the nation ' s fastest jet planes. We understand that the pilot. Captain Jinny Boyer, will try for another super -speed record on the way. For further information on this matter, we refer you to the latest issue of True Confessions Magazine, in which the editor, L ' Dea Handy, has written a feature story which contains all the facts in detail. Respectfully yours, NATIONAL DETECTIVE BUREAU Audrey Miller Chief Investigator.
