THE 1982 REBEL S. R. Butler High School 3401 Holmes Avenue Huntsville, Alabama 35805 Mr. George Brazier, also known as Mr. Rebel, began his football career by playing for Troy High School in south Alabama. He held the positions of tackle and half-back at Fort Benning. Mr. Rebel began his long career as a Butler supporter when his daughter began at- tending West Huntsville High School in the late 1930's. S. R. Butler High School was then formed from West Huntsville High School in 1951. In spite of many hardships, Mr. Rebel has rarely missed a pep rally or game for approximately 44 years By his own admission, Mr. Rebel not only supports athletics, but also Butler as a whole. He says, I like football, but I would rather see a kid get a good education before anything. Throughout his many years at Butler, Mr. Rebel's faithful dedication to our school has illustrated the pride, the spirit, and the togetherness that shall continue to thrive at S. R. Butler High School. We are thankful to have the opportunity and privilege of knowing Mr. Rebel and to cherish him as our friend. 2 In trying to come up with a suitable theme for the 1982 Rebel, the staff searched for a topic that would successfully reveal our intent: to highlight the 1981-82 school year. We chose Reflections because we wanted to reflect this year to you, the reader, whenever you opened this yearbook. We realize that this book is one that will be treasured throughout the owner's life. Therefore we, the REBEL staff, have attempted to capture a year of memories, both good and not-so-good, to help you re-live these carefree days whenever the need arises. Reflections Reflections of times we have shared, Times we will cherish through the years Memories of times Both good and bad, Memories of times Both happy and sad. To look at through the years Of a golden time We have shared. — Sally Hudson Class of '82 Reflections of smiles Which made our four miles short. Reflections of halls Passed through every way, Reflections of walls Which held us every day. Reflections of faces We may never meet again; Reflections of friends We may never see again. But we have a book of Reflections 8 Many new fads have crept into the halls of Butler and embodied the minds of the students, such as the Rubik's Cube. This cube has been found to be the center of attention in the back of classrooms, during movies, and in the halls. The Cube has created many frustrating hours for teachers as well as students. Punk rock clothes have proved to be a favorite for most of the student body. Bizarre colored sweatshirts, donned with safetypins, above a pair of baggy balloon pants can be seen throughout Butler's halls. If not Punk, it's camouflage clothes. Cammie pants, jackets, and shirts add that certain something that makes Butler so special. 10 11 THE NATURE OF THINGS I remember that day when nothing seemed to go right: I tore my new jeans, I forgot my P.E. clothes, and. I had a fight with my best friend. I felt miserable and I knew that only one thing could lighten my spirits. After school I ran to my car and drove as fast as I could to my favorite spot. I grabbed my camera and I walked around, alone with my thoughts, admir- ing my surroundings. I then knew that everything would be alright. 13 Campus Life provided an evening of fun to inform the community high school students about their program. What better way to inform the student body of organizational activities than to have an all out Burger Bash. The students enjoyed a piano performance, skits, a slide show, and a sing-along. The Burger Bash was a successful event, which is proven by the fact that a number of Butler students have joined and become active in Campus Life. 14 15 Where is the least likely place to find a smile? Certainly nowhere at Butler. The atmosphere promotes content- ment and creativity. The curriculum poses a challenge to the students, and the extra-curriculum activities balance each personality. A Butler Rebel need not fill a preconceived mold. One can see many different smiles in many different places. Everyone has their own reason for be- ing happy and that inner peace of op- timism greets every visitor, parent, teacher, or student who may enter S. R. Butler High School. Rebel Faces 16 A Rebel-Rousing Homecoming Before the Pep Rally even began, we knew the day was special because of the decorated doors and field house. The doors depicted the Homecoming theme and hopes of a vic- tory. Following a Butler tradition, the cheerleaders expertly rolled the field house. During the Pep Rally, the football players were presented with cans of Orange Crush and boutonnieres by the cheerleaders. The Dixie Debs presented them with chocolate chip cookies displaying their team number. Although all of the students showed an over- whelming amount of enthusiasm, the seniors outdid them all to win the spirit stick. 19 20 Butler played their twenty-ninth Homecoming game, against Grissom High School, on September Twenty-fifth. Butler outplayed the Tigers but distinctive errors cost the Rebels the game. Butler was plagued with penalties - seventeen in all - that totaled sixty-five yards. However, the Rebels did manage to score two touchdowns. Senior Shaun Hess skillfully recovered a fumble and thundered thirty yards down the field to score Butler's first touchdown. As the game progressed, senior Ronald Dancy crossed the goal line for the second touchdown. Even though the team was unable to hand the Queen a victory, the cheers of the massive crowd made the event a memorable occasion. 21 23 26 f'- CM U OJ Objective Lens View Throughout our Student Body, we find different moods each day. Looking through the lenses of our camera we attempted to capture some of these moods. If we moved fast, we could find students being themselves. Pep rallies proved to be a real treat. Classrooms always showed many sides of students and we caught several on film. This collection of snapshots summarizes the spirit of S. R Butler High School. 31 32 33 Rebel Students Enjoy TOP LEFT: Steve Rothenbush, Dan Clough, Chris Crenshaw and Bill Roberts fight it out at the UAH-Tennessee game TOP RIGHT: Butler students Patricia Clark, Karen Feather and Marc Widner patiently wait to enter the arena. BOTTOM LEFT Steve Rothenbush awaits the puck at a UAH practice. BOTTOM RIGHT: Butler student Paul Clouse relaxes during a break while working in the concession stand. 34 Yankee Sport Hockey, a popular sport in the North for many years, has now invaded the South and become a favorite form of entertainment for Rebel students in the form of Chargermania. On Friday and Saturday nights many Rebel students are present at the Von Braun Civic Center to watch the UAH Charger Hockey team victimize another opponent. Most of these students attend to enjoy the excitement of the game. Socializing with fellow students from Butler and the other area high schools is an added benefit. After the game's completion, many students can be seen waiting in the skate lobby in hopes of obtaining a coveted hockey stick or puck. Some Rebel students earn extra money while supporting the Charger hockey team. Several Butler students can be seen busily working in Civic Center concession stands. Senior, Bill Clark, performs a uni- que service by working as a manager for the UAH hockey team. Many Rebel students, although in dif- ferent ways, continually support UAH Charger hockey. Rebel involvement in UAH hockey goes much further than fan support. Without Butler graduate joe Ritch, head coach of the team. Charger hockey might not exist. Ritch donated much of his time and energy in order to get the UAH hockey program organized and on its way. Even though Charger hockey has expanded to include talented Cana- dians and Northerners, many members remain Huntsvillians. Perhaps if Rebel students and other Huntsvillians continue to enjoy and support the UAH Charger hockey games, then one day the REBEL might include a page recognizing the Butler hockey team. Luckey Gurley was on the All-State Basketball team last year and has proven to be a valuable asset to his team this year. For five consecutive years, the Butler Rebels have been first in the city. This year they have won every home game and the Minor Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama. Jerry Rice is the Coach of Varsity Basketball team. Without his help, these wins may not have been accomplished. The Butler Rebels are on their way to the Regional Champion- ship. If they win the Regional games, they will go to the S-T-A-T-E Championship competition. 36 SGA Sponsors Pie- Throwing Contest The SGA sponsored a pie-throwing contest in January. Several faculty members donned garbage bags and waited as students placed bids for the pies to be thrown. Pie number one went to Coach Gerry, while number two took the honor of donning the face of Robert Douthit. The money raised went to the SGA for future activities. Favorites Group Album — Movie T.V. Tryouts con- sist of playing scales and selected musical exercises, and sight- reading a chosen piece of music. Students chosen for the bands travel to the University of Alabama campus and try out for seating in the three bands - the Blue, White, and Red bands. The bands then present a concert. This year's winners from Butler are Andy Sharpies, alternate on bass clarinet, Leela Sistla on flute, and Karen Young and Leslie Sistla on Bb clarinet. 41 Boys' Girls' State Representatives Nominations for Boys' and Girls' State are based upon the students interest and academic achievement in the area of history. The conventions are held at selected college campuses within the state. While in session, the representatives divide into cities and hold a mock legislature. Butler's Girls' State representative is Grace Risberg (below). Boys' State representatives are Bert Gangl (bottom front) and David johnson (right). 42 D.A.R. Good Citizen Jonathan Graham was chosen as recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen- ship Award. Nominees are judged on the qualities of patriotism, dependability, leadership, and service. Jon was sponsored by the Hunts Spring chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. 43 National Merit Semi-Finalists TOP RIGHT: Leilani Hardin ABOVE: Keith Hardy RIGHT: Margaret Esser 44 National Achievement Semi-Finalists TOP LEFT: Alfreda Grant ABOVE: Cedric Ewing LEFT: Cheryl Williams 45 Personalities The following people possess in- teresting pastimes that we feel should be recognized. On these grounds we present 'Personalities.' Huskey Brothers Daniel and David, sophomores, and their brother Jeff, senior, have been riding in horse competitions for the past four years. The Huskeys compete in several different time events including barrel racing, pole bending, and rescue races. The Huskeys have six horses which they race. The brothers win an average of a hundred trophies a year, which does not include cash prizes. Chuck Facemire Jule Howe Terrell Nixon Kickboxing, a full contact sport, is the hobby of senior Chuck Facemire. Kickbox- ing is similar to boxing except the feet are used as well as the hands. Enjoyment of theatre arts is senior Julie Howe's reason for being involved in the Twickenham Repertory Company. Julie is the student producer of TRC and helps with ticket sales and advertising. Puppets are freshman Terrell Nixon's pastime. Terrell works with the puppet ministry at Antioch Baptist Church. Terrell and his puppets have won awards at pup- pet workshops and for their involvement in the Muscular Dystrophy program. 46 Cheri McGill Winning Best Actress” award at the Walter Trumbauer theatre com- petition is just one of senior Cheri McGill's many accomplishments in theatre. Cheri works with both the Fantasy Playhouse and Twickenham Repertory Company aside from here at Butler with the Drama club. Cheri, along with fellow senior Kathy Watson, won the best actress award for an outstanding performance in the one act play, Lemonade.” Cheri is a member of the International Thespian Society and plans to continue working with theatre. Wayne Hunt At the age of nine Wayne Hunt learned to do something some adults can not do; play chess. Wayne, who is now a sophomore, began play- ing tournament chess. Wayne has already competed in one state tour- nament, three Huntsville Chess Federation tournaments, and one school tournament. Wayne hopes to keep playing in chess tournaments. Jerry Pugh Jacking up the car, changing the tires, and putting gas in the car are just a few of Jerry Pugh's responsibilities while working as a pit crew member. Jerry has worked for several race car drivers, including Gary Finley who taught him auto maintenance at the age of ten. Jerry looks toward the future with a career in stock car racing. 47 Kim Katholi Winning first place in an equitation contest sets junior Kim Katholi apart from her classmates. Kim competes in horse shows. Equitation contest winners are judged on the way Kim looks on the horse. Kim rides in both Western and English competitions. Western and English riding are based on the style of saddle. Kim rides her own horse, Bacchus, in events throughout Alabama. Lisa Johnson Lawrence Freil Charles Brown Busy as a bee” is a good way to describe senior Lisa Johnson's hobby of keeping a large bee culture. Lisa keeps a colony of bees in her backyard, ana ex- tracts honey from her hives during warm months. Lisa hopes to continue bee keep- ing while attending UAH. C-OM-P-U-T-E-R-S, spell the future for Lawrence Freil, senior, who is vice- president of the Explorers Computer Club. Freil owns his own home computer which he feels will help him as he continues his computer studies at UAH. Charles Brown, sophomore, collects knives. Knife collecting is a very con- suming hobby that Charles really en- joys. He spends a great deal of time stu- dying and learning the history of various markings of knives. 48 Karen Thomas Fantasy Playhouse Productions would not be quite the same without junior Karen Thomas' work with props and scenery. Karen works with Butler's Theatre Depart- ment and has acted in several school productions. David Hatch David Hatch, junior, is interested in the art of theatre. David has worked with Fantasy Playhouse and the Twickenham Repertory Company. David found his interest for theatre while enrolled in Theatre classes here at Butler. Aaron Wigley Holding an edge over other young ac- tors, senior Aaron Wigley works backstage as a member of Fantasy Playhouse's technical crew. Aaron's interest in dramatics stemmed from his work with the Butler Theatre Company Play Productions. Aaron hopes that working backstage will soon lead to an on stage job. Kerry Bailey and Mike Mohler Being able to read and sing music is quite a talent but for sophomores Kerry Bailey and Mike Mohler that is not quite enough. Kerry and Mike write and perform their own musical compositions. Kerry and Mike both are active members of the Butler Choral Department. Modern Music Masters, an honor society for outstanding musical students, lists the membership of both Kerry and Mike. 49 Reflections of. .. 50 life at Butler 51 Whatever Is in Any Way Beautiful Hath It Source 52 M. The staff lost its sponsor at the end of last year due to cutbacks in the school system. We wandered through the summer months wondering whether or not we would find a new sponsor. When school began we were introduced to our new sponsor. Three weeks later our sponsor quit. Next came an endless succession of substitute teachers. Finally Mrs. Akin, our current sponsor, was hired. We have struggled through this year. We have worked after school, at night, and over the weekend. Often have staff members dragged themselves to their classes after a night of running to meet a deadline. All of this we have braved in order to present to you a book of memories to treasure throughout your life. Our staff has work- ed hard and considering the circumstances, has done an excellent job. The staff of the 1982 Rebel would like to thank the following people for their help and support throughout the school year: Gregg Stone (who designed the cover) Mr. Jim Elmore Cindy Donovan (for her artwork) Waldrup Studios Butler Administration and Staff Dr. Robert Austin Mrs. RoseMarie D'Agostino Miss Vicki Spencer Mrs. Shirley Plattenburg Mrs. Fran Julian Mrs. Martha Shelton Mrs. Mary Terry Graham Sherry Thompson The Staff at the Alabama Space and Rocket Center and our many sponsors 320 01010000010000000202000002020102000200000002010002040208020100090001060602010200020409060904 Zl:
