BUTLER HIGH SCHOOL HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA Editor’s Letter Dear Friends, This is the REBEL; it is all the things you have attempted and achieved this past school year. In reality it is you. We of the REBEL staff have tried to put into this annual the events which will be remembered and looked hack on for many years. To the Sophomores, this year has been one of complete newness, new faces, friends and experiences which will be kept forever in the REBEL. To lire Juniors, this annual represents the year before you become a sen- ior. A year in which many happy and exciting things have happened to you. These things will live on in the REBEL. But to the Seniors, this annual will hold forever the happy memories of the senior year, the one everyone looks forward to. It is one of the most important years of your life, the year in which most of your future dreams and ambitions are recognized and planned for. The aim of this REBEL is to keep alive for you the happiness of the past. And to the faculty and staff at Butler, the REBEL truly appreciates the time, talents, and efforts you have given to Butler. All of the things you have done for us could not possibly be put in this REBEL. The REBEL staff could not have produced this annual without the help of friends, students, faculty members, photographers, the publisher, our English advisor, Mrs. Linda Perdue, and most of .11 our faculty advisor, Mrs. Jean Day. We greatly thank all of you. This annual is centered around you and your school. I hope it makes many happy and memorable hours for you in the future. During the summer of 1963, a group of ambitious Butler High students talked of forming a school magazine. They planned to have the magazine contain creative writing from the school’s many talented students. When school began in September, these students worked hard organizing their staff and collecting material for their first issue. They chose Mrs. Jones and Miss Canterbury as sponsors. Kathy Anderson and Kay Holston became Co-Editors and they chose a very able staff. This is Huntsville’s first high school magazine to be formed. Its staff busily sold subscriptions for the bi-annual editions at fifty cents a copy. Staff members searched for talented writers of short stories, Poems and essays. Finally, in January the first of many issues of the Beacon appeared. It was a financial and aesthetic success, mak- ing over many dollars. The purpose of the Beacon is to encourage the students of Butler High School to read, write and appreciate good literature. Although this is its first year in existence, it has already gone a long way toward reaching its goals. It is hoped that in the future years the Butler Beacon will continue to be a success. 159 Sc 1st Row Left to Right: J. Champion, J. Sterner, R. Betsill, M. Lang. 2nd Row: J. Anderson, S. Hargrove, A.
