LEROY POPE HOME, 1815: The first ante-bellum mansion built in the citv was that of LeRoy Pope, who was known as the “Father of Huntsville.” These six people are known as the “Builders of Butler”: Mr. Crim-Principal, Mr. Keel-Assistant Principal, Mrs. Wall ace-Secretary and Commercial, Miss Hollingsworth-Commercial and Annual, Miss Canterbury-Commercial and Newspaper, Mrs. Burkhardt-Home Economics and Cherry Pie Contest. The early settlers had the FACULTY for building a great city.

 Jabfe oj (Lontentd ORIGINAL TOWN PLAT—LeRoy Pope, who purchased the land on which Huntsville now stands in the 1809 land sales, had a town plat made in 1810, showing streets os shown above. He sold the south part for public buildings and donated the north half for the town of Twickenham. The name was changed to Huntsville in 1811.

The Indian Creek Navigation Company was chartered in 1820 and a canal was built from Big Spring to Triana. In this drawing we find some of our teachers dressed in the costumes of the period floating down the canal on a barge. They are: Miss Culbreath-Mathematics, Mrs. Bradford- Physics and Chemistry, Mr. Clem-Physical Education, Miss Cantrell-Fnglish and French, Mrs. Franklin-Commercial, Mrs. Amos-Guidance Counselor. In 1825 a census of the Huntsville area was taken. In the above picture the dates and the popula- tion are shown in the various scrolls. The teachers pictured are: Mrs. Ferranti-Biology, Mr. God- sey-History and Coach, Mrs. Miller-Commercial, Mrs. Milner-Home Economics, Miss Mitchell- History and art, Mrs. Myers-Spanish, Mrs. O’Reilly-Commercial, Mr. Stephenson-Mathematics.
