Lla55 FOOTPRINTS ON THE SANDS OF TIME” The time: 2000 A.D ; The occasion: graduation ceremonies; The place: Butler High School, Huntsville, Alabama; On the stage sat Homer Knowles, in the audience sat his grandfather, Craig Knowles. The speaker was droning on and on, rambling about the things that people do when they are in high school. Craig was trying to stay awake but he was getting old and his fatigue got the best of him. He wafted off to dreamland and, as usual, dreamed about his high school days when he was president of his senior class. However, his dreams went even farther than that. They went back to his junior year when he was also class president. He remembered Ginger Poitevant as the junior Homecoming Maid. Then the fabulous Spring Dance flitted through his mind and the lustrous formals almost blinded him. The next thing to strike him was the junior class play. A play with a cast of thousands and whose leads were taken by Lucy Elliot, Ginger Poitevant, Shirley Homes, Jimmy Caldwell, Charles Clark, Wayne Suns, Mike May, Bill Marshall, and Mickey Pierce. The thoughts of the fashion show with boys in girls’ clothes made the old man chuckle. He then thought of the tremendous junior prom. The theme ‘‘Blue Hawii” with the Coconut trees, the huts, the waterfall with blue lights and sprinkling water. His dreams shifted into his senior year. Being one who likes girls, his first thoughts were of the Homecoming parade in which Lucy Elliott reigned as Queen, with Ruth Gladney and Janet Hann as maids. The old man felt very tired when the remembrance of the work that went into raising money, such as selling cards, candy, and magazines came to him. How could he forget the sponsors, who prodded him continuously about raising money! About that time Craig was abruptly brought to his senses by the processional music. His fatigue was completely gone, and he could hardly wait to get home to show his grandson his senior class annual, 1 the only permanent reminder he had, through the un- tiring efforts of Caryl Ewalt, to remind him of his wonderful high school days. .. Jli.'ilor ¥ In Huntsville and the surrounding areas there were many slave plantations in 1860. Our Junior Class Officers: Marilyn Boyd-Treasurer; Billy Hodgin-Vice-President; Jimmy McDaniels-Pres- ident; and Barbara Foster-Secretary, have dressed in the costumes of that period. It accomplished much in bringing order out of chaos. The Klan was a secret organization and its members wore hoods as disguises. At the beginning, the disguises were an asset; but soon, others began taking advantage of them and committed crimes, blaming them on the Klan. About 1868, the official Klan stopped wearing disguises and went into the field of politics to regain for the South a government of their own. There were many ORGANIZATIONS in early Huntsville. tUJ This annual would not have been possible without the hard work contributed by the people other than those on the regular staff.
