Notes from our past There was a time when senior year seemed ages away, and the most un- comfortable air of freshmanhood hung about every ninth grade face. Confron- ting the Freshman Social with indif- ference, we said such things as, “What do you think of those Bloomingdale kids?” or “I don’t know if I like those kids from Butler too much. Then, clumped together in class after class, we became aware that the barrier was breaking down. Instead, we said, “Oh, yeah, you were in my fifth grade class at Richard Butler, right?” Many times, the response was, “No, I live in Bloom- ingdale, “ and we racked our memories in search of the face that, surely, we had known for years. There was a time when giddiness was common and maturity was not. Nobody knew the meaning of “SAT’s and nobody very much cared, for those tests were years away. The Senior Lounge seemed magical with its couch, TV, and stereo. The thought that many of us as seniors would not have time for TV never crossed our minds. Study hall seemed endless then as we passed the minutes watching the girl in the next row slather on the lipstick. We never thought that some- day, we would actually want a study hall, so we could study. So many things we had not realized . . . There came a time when, looking back in disbelief at how swiftly the years had slid by, we reached our senior year. We met it with a new maturity and solid friendships. As we enjoyed the final year of class unity, treasuring each passing day. we remembered the past and smiled, at the carefree times we never dreamed we’d miss.
