Study our successes Four years ago, students from Butler and Bloomingdale met at Butler High School to form the Class of 1985. As newcomers, they strove with spirit and determination to create a name for themselves. Since that time, the proud members of the Class of '85 have com- piled many accomplishments. It is im- possible to list all of them as there were so many noteworthy ones. What follows is a representative sample of the pride of '85. It was the fall of 1982, while under the guidance of coach Jack Davies, that the Butler Bulldogs made a dream come true. For the first time in years, the football team was the state cham- pion. The magic proved to be lasting, for again in 1983, the team clinched the title. Unfortunately, the spell was broken in 1984, despite the team’s continued spirit and skill. Special acknowledgements should go to Cap- tains Glenn Stock, Dan Gormley, and Gary Gieger. Equally impressive was the record of the Girls’ Cross Country Team. Over the past few years, the team captured the most victories in the team’s eleven- year history. In 1983, with a record of 7-0, they tied for the Northern Hills Suburban Championship. Co-captain Heidi Schimpf was named most valuable player. This past year, the girls, with an even better record of 10- 0, won the conference race. In the area of academics, there have been a number of outstanding students. In 1984, Susan Joseph’s first-place performance in restaurant marketing in the DECA state competi- tions qualified her for the national com- petitions in Kansas City, Missouri, where she won the prestigious Phillips Petroleum National Achievement Award. Heading the list for writing and math honors were Jacquelyn Quinn and Kevin Murphy, respectively. Jackie’s achievements include third place in the New Jersey Poetry Contest and second place in the district in the Voice of Democracy contest. Most significantly, she was selected as one of 800 na- tional winners in the 1984 National Council of Teachers of English Achieve- ment Awards in Writing. Kevin received a Letter of Commendation for his work from the same organization, as well as a Commendation for his high score on the American High School Mathematics Examination. z Patrick Newton, Kevin Murphy, and Jackie Quinn were selected to repre- sent BHS at Boys’ and Girls’ State. The National Merit Scholarship pro- gram selected Thomas Timmerman as a semifinalist and commended the achievements of Lisa Panyko and Kevin Murphy. Lisa and Kimberly Mahon were chosen to attend the Presidential Classroom in Washington, D.C. as representatives of Butler High School. The list goes on to include outstand- ing competition performances by the Butler Band, trophies for achievement in forensics, a fine showing by our High School Bowl team, exceptional seasons for athletes in nearly every sport in our program, and more. It is impossible to sum up four years of accomplishments in a limited space. There are too many, and more still to be announced. Four years ago, the Class of ’85 set about making a name for itself.
