Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1985 volume:

I t We, the Class of 1985, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Benjamin Goldberg, a very special person, who passed away on August 21, 1984. Mr. Goldberg was a part of BHS for thirty-four years, during nineteen of which he served as its principal. His dedication was demonstrated by the many pro- grams he initiated during his tenure here. He developed the segregated sports program to better serve the young women of BHS. He helped to expand the curriculum in both its academic and vocational areas. After fire destroyed a section of the original building, Mr.Goldberg pro- moted the establishment of the courtyard, which has evolved as the social center of the school. Mr. Goldberg’s commitment to education was not limited to Butler. He participated in such organiza- tions as the Principals’ and Superintendents’ Association of New Jersey and the New Jersey Education Association, working with other educators to develop ideas and programs to benefit our school and others. Mr. Goldberg demonstrated that he always had the students’ in- terests in mind. He listened to what they had to say, rarely making a deci- sion without considering their opinion. Hundreds of students over the years came to admire and respect him. He won their affection as well with his sincere and frequently demonstrated school spirit. There was not a football game, history fair, or social gathering of any kind that he did not attend. It didn’t matter whether Butler was down by four touchdowns or had just clinch- ed the state championship, Mr. Goldberg was there in good times and bad, supporting his school and his students. His support was not limited to cheering from the stands. He gave his assistance whenever it was need- ed. sometimes from his own pocket, quietly and without publicity, so students could attend programs like Junior Officials and Boys' State. He was a caring and generous person. It is for this reason that saying good-bye to Mr. Goldberg is such a difficult task. Even though he rarely showed his emotions, we here at Butler High School have always known that he loved this place and its students. His memory is special to the genera- tions of young people whose lives he helped to shape. noteworthy adj. — extraordinary, notable, memorable, remarkable, exceptional. SEE outstanding Nugget ’85 Butler High School Butler, New Jersey TfcST l(, | THORS...1.. 4 Notes from our past There was a time when senior year seemed ages away, and the most un- comfortable air of freshmanhood hung about every ninth grade face. Confron- ting the Freshman Social with indif- ference, we said such things as, “What do you think of those Bloomingdale kids?” or “I don’t know if I like those kids from Butler too much. Then, clumped together in class after class, we became aware that the barrier was breaking down. Instead, we said, “Oh, yeah, you were in my fifth grade class at Richard Butler, right?” Many times, the response was, “No, I live in Bloom- ingdale, “ and we racked our memories in search of the face that, surely, we had known for years. There was a time when giddiness was common and maturity was not. Nobody knew the meaning of “SAT’s and nobody very much cared, for those tests were years away. The Senior Lounge seemed magical with its couch, TV, and stereo. The thought that many of us as seniors would not have time for TV never crossed our minds. Study hall seemed endless then as we passed the minutes watching the girl in the next row slather on the lipstick. We never thought that some- day, we would actually want a study hall, so we could study. So many things we had not realized . . . There came a time when, looking back in disbelief at how swiftly the years had slid by, we reached our senior year. We met it with a new maturity and solid friendships. As we enjoyed the final year of class unity, treasuring each passing day. we remembered the past and smiled, at the carefree times we never dreamed we’d miss. Clockwise from top left: Freshman biology; Bryan DeGraw and friends; Freshman Girls’ Basketball ‘81 5 Assignment: become a senior After three years of envy, the time had finally come. It was a long strug- gle, from the dreaded singing of the alma mater as freshmen at the first pep rally through the anxious morning of SAT’s as juniors. It was senior year and the wait was worth it. Being a senior at BHS means upholding certain traditions. The most noted one is the privilege of using the Senior Lounge. Entering this tiny sanc- tum, you first note the antiques and classic art pieces. That psychedelic stereo and the “Ghostbuster” poster will surely be collectibles in a few years. But wait, before you go in, make sure you have the necessary creden- tial, the Blue and Gold Pass. This sought-after item allows certain seniors to escape the drudgery of study halls and lunch periods and catch their favorite “soaps” or game shows in the Lounge. The conversa- tions here range from who abducted the stuffed raccoon to Mr. Malzone’s psych class. If claustrophobia becomes a prob- lem, the place to go is the pride and joy of Butler High School, the court- yard. There’s nothing like catching some rays on a sunny spring day and making plans for the weekend. Although senior year sounds like all fun, it still has pressures. It’s time to plan for the future, to sort out that mountain of college brochures you stashed under the bed or to make some serious career decisions. Ap- plications are as difficult as a Hoeflinger history test. There are deadlines to be met and more tests to be taken, but senior year has still lived up to all our expectations. 7 i “• i vi rf f 4 f’ ' 1U4i 4r 5 4 v4 A ■V rt i •f' ’4 6w (fity fatur 5’ T? As newcomers, they strove with spirit and determination to create a name for themselves. Since that time, the proud members of the Class of '85 have com- piled many accomplishments. It is im- possible to list all of them as there were so many noteworthy ones. What follows is a representative sample of the pride of '85. It was the fall of 1982, while under the guidance of coach Jack Davies, that the Butler Bulldogs made a dream come true. For the first time in years, the football team was the state cham- pion. The magic proved to be lasting, for again in 1983, the team clinched the title. Unfortunately, the spell was broken in 1984, despite the team’s continued spirit and skill. Special acknowledgements should go to Cap- tains Glenn Stock, Dan Gormley, and Gary Gieger. Equally impressive was the record of the Girls’ Cross Country Team. Over the past few years, the team captured the most victories in the team’s eleven- year history. In 1983, with a record of 7-0, they tied for the Northern Hills Suburban Championship. Co-captain Heidi Schimpf was named most valuable player. This past year, the girls, with an even better record of 10- 0, won the conference race. In the area of academics, there have been a number of outstanding students. In 1984, Susan Joseph’s first-place performance in restaurant marketing in the DECA state competi- tions qualified her for the national com- petitions in Kansas City, Missouri, where she won the prestigious Phillips Petroleum National Achievement Award. Heading the list for writing and math honors were Jacquelyn Quinn and Kevin Murphy, respectively. Jackie’s achievements include third place in the New Jersey Poetry Contest and second place in the district in the Voice of Democracy contest. Most significantly, she was selected as one of 800 na- tional winners in the 1984 National Council of Teachers of English Achieve- ment Awards in Writing. Kevin received a Letter of Commendation for his work from the same organization, as well as a Commendation for his high score on the American High School Mathematics Examination. z Patrick Newton, Kevin Murphy, and Jackie Quinn were selected to repre- sent BHS at Boys’ and Girls’ State. The National Merit Scholarship pro- gram selected Thomas Timmerman as a semifinalist and commended the achievements of Lisa Panyko and Kevin Murphy. Lisa and Kimberly Mahon were chosen to attend the Presidential Classroom in Washington, D.C. as representatives of Butler High School. The list goes on to include outstand- ing competition performances by the Butler Band, trophies for achievement in forensics, a fine showing by our High School Bowl team, exceptional seasons for athletes in nearly every sport in our program, and more. It is impossible to sum up four years of accomplishments in a limited space. There are too many, and more still to be announced. Four years ago, the Class of ’85 set about making a name for itself. Today we know that name is EXCELLENCE. Clockwise from top left: Butler Band; Kevin Murphy; Heidi Schimpf; Pat Newton 12 accomplished adj. — proficient, talented, skilled. SEE gifted. This is the Butler High School morning show. Please stand for the national anthem and the pledge to the flag.” Another morning begins in the locker-lined corridors. BHS opens its eyes to the familiar friendly faces of students and faculty. Screams of greeting to a friend and the romantic interlude of the class couple in their usual spot set the stage for the start of a new day. Yes, the late bell has definitely rung, its echoes paralleled by sulking sighs of those poor souls who were “snag- ged and forced to deal with the em- barrassment of the famous late pass. After the shuffle of the class change, the hallways are hollow and the business of the school day begins. As notes engulf the blackboard your mind starts to wander out the window into the courtyard, complete with park-like benches and trees. BHS groups seem to have assigned spots in the courtyard. The football team claims the fence along the covered walkway; the outside benches belong to the gossiping girls or an occasional studying group. The cheerleaders discuss a new dance to wow the home stands. The outside fence is lovers’ lane. “Do I have to repeat my question? Whoops! Back to business. This period flew, thanks to the daydreams. There’s only 30 seconds left. “Homework, page 224, 1 to 5, don’t forget. Myriads of scuffling feet charge to lockers and then on to the next class. The excitement of moving on carries us through the sentimentality of the day. Last June, the Junior usheret- tes donned their most elegant attire, knowing that the next such occasion would find them draped in gowns and caps. What seemed an eternal wait as freshmen was nearly over. Our most notable year at Butler High School was about to begin. i 16 Eugene Appel Carolyn Aleman Michelle Ann Aluzzo Jeanne Elizabeth Appelquist Jeffrey William Ballard George Anthony Bariso Brian D. Mrs. Vi Silversey 65 Notes on change During the past four years, as the Class of '85 has been passing through the classrooms and corridors of Butler High School, many familiar faces among the staff have moved on to new chal- lenges and pursuits elsewhere. Some, like veteran social studies teacher Mr. Leonard Perfetti, and school nurse, Mrs. Dorothy Winrow, have retired from education. Several have taken on new positions in other school districts. Mr. Jack Davies and Mr. Art Pasquale are now teaching and coaching in Montclair and Kearney, respectively. Mrs. Dorothy Burke is using her advanced degree in school psychology. Miss Debra Van Nimwegen left teaching to embark on a new career in the business world while Mr. James Smith moved around the cor- ner to become principal of the Richard Butler School. Ms. Gayle Rembold left BHS to relocate with her new husband and recently became a mother. Parenting has also preempted the talents of Mrs. Kathy Franklin, who is on leave from the science department tending to son, Sean. Madame Virginia Myer has taken a leave of absence from the foreign language department while Mr. Brian Kent left Butler in pursuit of fame and fortune. Sadly, 1984 was marred by the deaths of three long-time faculty members. Mr. Benjamin Goldberg, to whom this book is dedicated, and Mr. Ed Mitchell, who retired in 1982 after thirty-five years in the business department as teacher and supervisor, passed away. The school family was also shocked and deeply sad- dened by the death of Mr. Robert Sippie of the English department. There are many new faces around Butler High now. New teachers have joined a number of departments and ap- pear throughout this book. Some old- timers have taken on new positions here. Ms. Marge Giles has become a guidance counselor. Mr. Joseph DiPas- quale has moved into the principal’s of- fice while Mr. Wendel Kralovich and Mr. Ed Bolcar, former classroom teachers, became his assistants. There have been many changes around BHS. We miss all of those who have moved on. We welcome the new people and wish them well as they become part of the Butler tradition. Team The quick stick chicks! As the sign was unrolled at the pep rally, everyone saw those infamous crossed sticks symbolizing Butler’s field hockey team. Their hair gleaming with tints of blue and gold, the girls en- thusiastically tore through the sign and performed their “psyche” circle for the entire student body. From the first game to the last, this spirit always prevailed. The season started in late August when many of the girls attended Camp Tegawitha located in the heart of the Poconos. Accompanied by Coach “Ethel” Benne, the girls used the week to improve their skills, share many laughs, while playing competitively. The true season began with an arch rival, Pequannock. Playing strong, Butler was able to use their strong 70 Clockwise from top left: Kim Mahon goes for a shot while Lynda and Dana stand by; Jane Burt; Dana on the offensive; Carry Smith and Karen Davis wait for Gretchen's pass A young team, having six seniors, the team looks forward to the future. This was a first of many; in fact the season ended with the most ties Butler has ever experienced. Although Butler started out strong, the team found it difficult to keep up with the many com- petitive opponents facing them. The team put up with a lot of “kidding from fellow students, ending the season with a record of 4-6-8. 71 Top (left and right): The varsity team in action Bottom: Varsity Team: Top Row (from left): Coach Mr John Vogel. Led by captains Carmine Marchionda and Chris Haney, and ably coached by Mr. Vogel, the team entered each game with as much vigor and enthusiasm as if it were their first. Although their record was a disappointing 0-18, the conference in which we compete is made up of teams much larger and more powerful than we were. The fact that most games were decided by a single goal, often coming late in the game or in overtime, shows a vast improvement over last year’s team. All in all, Butler survived with a definite improvement and not without at least two highlights. Karl Leitner was named to the All-Conference 1st Team Defense and Dave Stirling received an honorable mention at midfield on the Offensive Team. 73 JV Team (top from left): Troy Javelona. Although it may not have been a winning record. Cap- tains Cheryl Mabey and Ann Marie Sheehan were extremely pleased with their victories over Caldwell and Wayne Valley. Coached by Mrs. Sasson and new assistant, Mr. Rubin, the team placed 5th at the championship meet, scoring 81.95 which was their all-season high. The team was bursting with talent as Cheryl Mabey received an honorable mention on the All-Conference team and Eileen Mathews was named to the 2nd team All-Conference in vaulting. Based on its strong underclass talent, Mrs. Sasson predicted that the B.H.S. gymnastics team will be shining brightly in the future. Top: Karen Sheehan Bottom: Ann Sheehan. Cheryl Mabey. Team captain. Kevin Murphy, was the only senior on the team. The team's record was 4-3 within the con- ference and 5-7 overall. Although this can't be seen from their record, the boys ran exceptional- ly well against some of the toughest teams in the area. Leading the team was junior Mark Aluzzo. its number one runner. He was followed by junior Mark Aluzzo. its number one runner. He was followed by junior Tom Bremer, senior Kevin Murphy, and sophomore Russell Anthony. Rounding out the team were juniors Bobby Car- roll and Jeff Yuhas. sophomores Bob Findura. Bob Post and Ed Palmer. Coach Hamilton remarked that he was both pleased and impressed by his team’s perfor- mance. and commented that although they will suffer the loss of Kevin Murphy, most of the var- sity members will be returning to run next year Mr. Hamilton is hopeful for a successful team in the future. Scott Kaplysz 76 The Run to Victory — Girls’ Cross Country This year the girls’ cross country team experienced one of its finest seasons ever. Under the direction of Coach Pat Barry, they remained undefeated for the second year in a row. In addition to this they won the Northern Hills Suburban Championship Meet which was like icing on the cake. The highlight of the season was the State Sectional Meet held in Elizabeth. Four out of six girls ran their best times, earning the team a very respectable second place. Lora Lucinski and Kathy Quigley placed in the top ten. Sadly enough, five out of the seven varsi- ty members are seniors. Leaving are Lora Lucinski. Heidi Schimpf, (capt.) and Kathy Quigley (capt.). This incredibly strong trio not only compose the toughest 1-2-3 that Butler has ever had. but also the fastest in the Group II State Championships. Also graduating are Jill De Witt and Nancy Grady. Here, musicians practiced the basics of marching and drill and were presented with new pieces of music. After much practice, the final product was viewed by all at Butler’s half-time show. “And coming on to the field at this time is the award-winning Butler High School Marching Band.” Dressed in royal blue and gold uniforms, the band was led onto the field by Drum Major Kelly Ann Smith. The band was comprised of 58 musicians plus 20 members of the band front for a total of 78 students. Music selections this year included “Sirocco”, “Sabre and Trepak Dance” and “The Hymn of Victory and 78 Freedom.” Members of the student staff include drill majors, Jackie Jones and Tom Timmerman. Band front flag sergeants are Mary Rose McDermott and Rosemary Pierce. Rifle sergeants are Laura Lewis and Luanne Osterhoudt. The band is under the direction of Mr. David Bychek, assisted by Mr. Walter Moore. The band front instruc- tor is Mrs. Terry Maimone, and its ad- visor is Miss Kris Gradisher. The strenuous 1984 season ended on a good note at the Wayne Hills Competition. There, the band received 1st place in Division II, and awards for Best Band Front, Best Music and Best Drum Major. This concluded the B.H.S. Marching Band’s noteworthy season. And that’s what they’ve done. No mat- ter what the circumstances of the game, these girls managed to sparkle flawlessly receiving myriads of com- pliments from all sources. Miss Bignell, was always there to keep the girls going. 80 Back Row. Left to Right: George Bariso. John Fleutter. Ricky Skaf, Ken Majury, Coach Barry. Front Row. Left to Right: Kathy Quigley. At the Winter Track Festival, Tammy Maf- fatone placed third in the 400 meter run. Unfortunately, this was her only race due to injury. At the Morris Coun- ty Track Championship, Lora Lucinski ran a very tough race in the 3200 meters and placed fourth. Her time was her personal best up to this point. Kathy Quigley took a surprising fifth in the 1000 meters the same day. Three seniors on the team, George Bariso, Lora Lucinski, and Kathy Quigley, really provided the leadership that the team needed. All of the athletes effectively used Indoor Track as a stepping stone to a successful outdoor season. But what was the key to their success? Although not a tall team, the boys compensated with an aggressive and competitive spirit — setting a pick, going for every rebound, driving the lane. Since last year’s team was young, many players were returning veterans. Coach Aug worked at developing new game strategies with the team, looking for high percentage shots. By working well, both offensively and defensively, the team gave Butler fans the most ex- citing season we’ve had in years. Top right: Varsity Team: Standing, From Left Mark Aluzzo, Bill Taylor. Right after Thanksgiving, the girls’ basketball teams were off to an ex- citing beginning. The varsity team, led by captains Denise Merusi and Kim Mahon, won their first game against Mt. St. Dominic, a game that generated high spirits for the challeng- ing season ahead. Applying their ac- quired skills, hard work and dedica- tion, they moved on to the competitive Christmas Tournament. In late December, they also had the oppor- tunity to exhibit their love and en- thusiasm for the sport in the Alumni Game. The team consisted of only four seniors; Dave Stirling (128) and Brian Spellman (169) captains, as well as Mike Caiola (Heavyweight) and Jeff Segnello. Other contributors to the team were John Logan (140) and Todd Bariso (121). The team had some 27 members who were mostly first and second-year wrestlers. According to Coach Vogel, the student and parent support has grown tremen- dously over the past few years for wrestling. With Butler’s own wrestl- ing squad, the matches were ex- citing to watch, and this will hopeful- ly continue under the able coaching of Mr. John Vogel, who is assisted by Mr. James O’Rourke. The introduction of gun- powder led to the abandonment of heavy armor and the shorter, heavier weapons used to pierce it. In its place, the long sword or rapier was introduced. To master the skills needed to use the new weapon, the modern equipment was developed: leather mask, foil, epee, and saber. Strategy, combined with lightning- quick strokes, is what makes a suc- cessful fencer. Under the direction of Coach K. Hanisch and Assistant Mr. K. Carpenter, the Butler team spent many hours in practice. That they learned well is shown by the fine season they enjoyed. Fencing Team: Standing. Left to Right: Denise Cusack. Scott Dilzer. Coached by Mr. Davenport, the team practiced and competed at Butler Bowl, continuing its dominance over area schools. Consistent performances by the team leaders, in- cluding junior Dave Stewart, and frequent outstanding in- dividual efforts, contributed to the success of the team this season. An active JV squad assures Butler of continuing fine performances in this sport. Right: Varsity Team: From Left: Craig Seeger, Dave Engelhaupt. Jeff Stewart. Dave Stewart, Tom Needhammer. Don- na Ludwig, Karen Donnelly, Liz Hirth, and Denise Merusi. The two juniors making im- portant contributions were Jennifer Behre and Amy Demarest. While Coach Giles was working on im- proving the offensive game, the girls’ strongest asset was their defense. The team was competitive in the conference and had hopes of qualifying for the county and state tournaments. 94 95 A Grand Slam Seasor 96 Six returning lettermen, all seniors, sparked the 1985 team. These season- ed veterans, Gary Geiger, Brian Peters, Todd Martin, Jeff Segnello, Dave Silversey, and Brian Spellman, were joined by Brian DeGraw and Jim Polons. When asked about this year’s team, Coach Hamilton said he looked for outstanding performances from this confident team. They had a lot of ex- perience in the pitching department, making it tough for other teams to score. The coaching staff included JV coach Mr. Jones and Mr. Chet Wolak, who topped a fine performance with the girls’ JV basketball team by coaching the Freshman baseball team. 97 Girls’ Track — Right on Track! This year, the Girls’ Track team was led by four-year varsity letterwinners Kathy Quigley and Heidi Schimpf. Both were distance runners with many honors in their respective events. The distance team was rounded out by other returning varsity runners, in- cluding Lora Lucinski and Jill DeWitt. The sprinters were led by senior Laurie Lime and juniors Tammy Maffatone and Katie Lyons. In the weight events, Donna Liloia stood out, as did Jackie Jones in the high jump. Coach Benne looked to the underclass for support. She felt that, since Butler didn’t have as many top athletes as in past years, depth was especially important. She was assisted by our new physical education teacher, Miss Palazzone. The coaches planned this as a rebuilding year, with the boys’ and girls’ teams working together. The future of Butler track promises to be exciting. Danny Gormley; Jerry DiBlasio 100 A Tough Task; Continue Winning Ways Runners to your marks, set, Go! And we’re off to another track season. The boys were as competitive as ever, with hopes of surpassing all records set in previous years. Considering some of the team members, and their individual talents, they had a great chance to reach these goals, quite easily. Shot and discus were two of our strongest field events, led by seniors Mike Caiola and Dan Gormley. High jumpers Kevin Murphy (senior) and Jerry DiBlasio (junior) helped carry the team to higher heights with their exceptional leaping abilities. Another of our talented areas was long distance run- ning. Brothers, George and Todd Bariso, (senior and sophomore respectively) had hopes of running away with first and second places in all their meets. This just about covers all areas, with the exception of sprinting, our weakest event. However, with a lot of determination and athletes who care, track season turned out to be a great success. As head coach Mr. Barry stated, Morris Catholic, Pequan- nock. and Madison were tough com- petitors, but Butler can come back just as tough to capture victories! (Since this section of the yearbook was out to the printer before track season started, we can only hope the boys perform as well as expected and we wish them the best of luck!!!) 101 Team(s)work Boys Varsity Club: Top Row. This year, under the supervision of Mrs. Sokoloff, the yearbook staff has once again attempted to meet this need. Year- book is an activity that demands devotion. Hours are spent sifting through dozens of photographs to find the perfect shots to fit a story, refining stories that describe our school, and arranging these into precise layouts that will create an effective yearbook. There are a number of challenges to be faced in this activity. Most difficult to deal with is the fact that members do not see the finished product until the book is published in June. This tests the dedication of every member because so much time is put into the process. Another major prob- lem is the development of an interesting theme. It should be one that all students can relate to. and it should not overpower the main sections of the book. Finally, it is important for staff members to select topics that will most accurately convey the atmosphere of the school. Without a doubt, yearbook is an ex- tremely demanding activity. More impor- tantly. though, it is an activity that allows students to serve their school while learn- ing about writing, photography and layouts. It also helps develop a tremendous sense of responsibility. Ultimately, however, there is the satisfaction and gratification that arise when the yearbooks arrive at B.H.S. at the end of the school year. 104 Nugget 1985 Editor-in-Chief Jackie Quinn Layout Editor Copy Editors Art Editor Christine Liptak Lynette Harrison Lisa Hart Denise Dubuque Senior Editorial Staff Kathy Quigley Nancy Grady Paige Meisheid General Staff George Bariso Alice Bleignier Christine Booth Jane Burt Violet Cuic Kim Gildersleeve Paul Gustus Jackie Hinkey Sue Jasper Chris Kerwin Donna Kistler Gina Miceli Luanne Osterhoudt Sharon Rosa Ken VanderHave Photographers Amy Bleignier Mark Bush Neil Smith Jeff Vanderhoff Alice Whealan Advisor: Mrs. Cynthia Sokoloff Business Editors Carolyn Bruno Christine lannaci Business Staff Kelli Delia Joann Myers Stephanie Hankin Guilly Proctor Kris Hutman AnnMarie Whitty Chris McGowan Advisor: Mr Frank Potenza 105 The Bark — Our Newest Tradition The Bark? Yeah, everyone has heard of it, but just what is it exactly — a disease that infects Butler Bulldog fans or maybe a description of the roaring voice that echoes out of the at- tendance office? No, it’s the famed Butler High School newspaper. This year, a group of eleven students supervised by Mr. Malzone has feverishly worked to publish a com- pleted paper every two months. The Bark has usually been four to six pages in length and has included everything from a treasure hunt that offered the reward of a ten dollar gift certificate, to an article on the controversial issue of abortion. The Bark has covered a variety of subjects ranging from humorous to more serious in nature, and the staff, along with its supervisor, has done its best to create a newspaper that both informs and entertains its readers. This year’s edi- tion, which included poems, dialogues, short stories and artwork, was the tenth annual presentation of the magazine. The works included were the original creations of B.H.S. students and reflected their talent and creativity. The title “Shambella” was derived from a mystical city existing on the seventh plane of the twelve planes of life. This plane represents love, hap- piness, creativity and imagination. Under this name, and with the assistance of Ms. Ciccarelli and Mr. Drelick, our literary magazine has com- pleted a decade of success. 107 Clockwise from top left: Barb Losee. To some, this announcement means missing English or history; however, most student council members find this an opportunity to discuss and plan activities to boost school spirit. Due to the guidance and support of our advisors, Mrs. Baruth and Mrs. Macdonald, Student Council has enjoyed another year of pro- ductivity. Whether it means serving hotdogs at football games or chaperoning a dance, these women are truly dedicated. Our Student Council wouldn’t be as successful without the help of our advisors, along with the class advisors, Mrs. Liddicoat, Miss Fenton, Mrs. Goertz and Mrs. deWaal. In the line of council activities, the first half of the year consisted of events like the Freshman Social, Together Day, the Harvest Ball, and the Annual Senior Citizens Christmas Party. During the second semester, council planned a Valentine’s Dance, the Easter bun- ny sale, executive and class elec- tions, and finally, the Student Coun- cil Picnic. Probably the most famous function here at BHS is the Annual Talent Show. This is an op- portunity for the students to display talents from break dancing to juggl- ing. We tended to think of the morning an- nouncements as something that oc- cupied our time while our homeroom teacher took atten- dance. Of course, this was not true. Under the direction of Mrs. Lid- dicoat, these skilled broadcasters informed us of everything that was happening at Butler High. Not only did they do this, but they informed us of important dates in history, challenged us with trivia questions, and announced the birthdays of our friends. They closed the show each day with a popular music selection that enlivened the students a little bit before it was time to go on to second period. 122 Above left: Joe Dillon reading the morning announcements. On one given Saturday night, all of Butler High School waited with high anxiety to hear the voice of Chris Booth, who announced the new Harvest King and Queen of 1984. The Annual Harvest Ball was held in the Butler High School Cafeteria on November 17. It was a festive occa- sion as everyone came donned in their best clothes: three-piece suits for the guys and beautiful dresses for the girls. Mr. Rubin, who also coached gym- nastics at Butler this year, was the live DJ for the night. A buffet of salads and goodies was served for all to enjoy after dancing up an appetite. Prior to the Harvest Ball, the teachers chose six boys and six girls as nominees for King and Queen. Then it was up to the students to choose their King and Queen. The nominees were Lynette Harrison, Nancy Grady, Kim Mahon, Kevin Murphy, Pat Newton, Wayne McDonnell, and the 2nd runners-up were Jane Burt and Bryan DeGraw. The 1st runners-up were Jackie Quinn and George Bariso. Last but not least, the King and Queen of 1984 were Dan Gormely and Ann Sheehan. Top right: 1st runners-up, Jackie Quinn. This year’s senior class sold over seven thousand dollars worth of magazine subscriptions. The profit from the sales was used to defray senior expenses. There are caps and gowns, yearbooks and a prom to be paid for. Certain individuals were rewarded for their outstanding ef- fort in the sale. Bob Hannemann, Kerri-Lynn Hopper, Ronna Mucklow and Lars Lilienthal were awarded prizes for being the top sellers. Also, Mr. Korn’s homeroom, the top-selling class, was given a pizza party. TransAmerican Flight 268 departed JFK for Madrid, Spain on April 5th, carrying an enthusiastic group of BHS students and staff members Mrs. Ardis and Mrs. Tarabocchia. Before their return on April 13th, our Spanish caravan had visited Madrid. Seville, Costa del Sol, and Morocco. They also soak- ed up some Mediterranean sun, in between the luscious food and entertaining flamenco dancers. Most importantly, the students got to really live the culture of the country. They saw the famous sites they had studied and had a chance to meet and converse with the people of Espaha. A weary but ex- hilarated group returned with many fond memories. On the same day the Spanish group departed for Spain, another group of BHS students boarded their chartered bus for a study tour of the French regions of Canada, accom- panied by Mrs. deWaal. Touring the Old City of Quebec and the modern sights of Montreal, the students were required to speak only French for the four days. The trip exposed them to French culture and cuisine and created a new, stronger foundation for their language study. Left: (left to right from top) Russell Anthony. Lisa Riehl. Lori Raso. Poodle skirts and leather jackets, teased hairstyles and crew cuts, mini-skirts and earth shoes all had their days. Today’s fashion trends are every bit as outrageous. It seems that teens now are fashionably foot- conscious. High tops closed with col- orful fat laces have appeared. Bobby socks seem to be making a reap- pearance from the 50’s as are cropped pants worn with spiky pumps and lacy anklets. Looking down the corridors of B.H.S., one might think that W.W. Ill was about to begin. Have no fear, it’s only the latest look in pants of camouflage print paired with black combat boots. Whether it be seen on male or female, ear piercing seems to be the most prominent sign of the times. Two, three and, yes, even four earrings are commonly seen — and all in one ear! Neckwear is an important part of the 80’s wardrobe. Ties and scarves sharpen up almost any outfit, and hats in every variety from an Iron Maiden painter’s cap to a black, silk derby top off any individual’s look. Sunglasses are definitely in, even in- doors. The Risky Business look shades eyes while providing complete privacy. Lately, though, they seem to be a necessity due to the latest craze in fluorescent clothing. Hot pink, shocking yellow and lime green have monopolized the fashion scene in the form of socks, shoes, sweatshirts and shades. Time, inevitably, brings change. At the present, the trends may seem wild and outlandish, but next year is sure to arrive with some that are equally so if not even more far out. 130 Signs of the times p. 130: (clockwise from top left) Terence Taggart. Ad- vanced Placement courses are now of- fered in the subjects of English, Calculus, Chemistry and Computer Science. These courses enable students to take college-level classes while still in high school. If a student scores well on a national examination given in May, he or she may be exempt from similar introduc- tory courses in college. The student thus saves the cost of these credits and may move directly into the next level of courses in that subject area in college. Even if a student chooses not to take the exam, he or she will be bet- ter prepared for college. Several other courses made their debuts during our years at BHS. Mrs. Hoeflinger developed an advanced law class that included participation in the Mock Trial Competition. Mr. Drelick unraveled the mysteries of black-and- white photography and darkroom techniques in a well-received addition to the Graphic Arts program. Latin reappeared, for entering freshmen, in 1984-85. Consumer-oriented courses were offered in the social studies and science departments and a new word- processing course was introduced in the business department. The planned reestablishment of a full eight-period schedule for all classes next year will give BHS students the time to in- vestigate many of Jhese academic opportunities. p. 132: (clockwise from top left) Pat Newton, Doug Imbimbo, Kris Wolfe; Ann Sheehan; Mr. Hamilton’s AP Calculus Class; Kerri-Lynn Hopper. p. 133: (clockwise from top left) Jane Burt, Lynette Harrison; Andy Kirbach, Bob Hannemann. The business department has kept its students in touch with current trends by incorporating computer use into course areas such as marketing, accounting, and word processing. Six teen terminals in Room 304 and several additional stations for in- dividual work are used daily. Juniors and seniors have made fre- quent trips to the Guidance Office to use the computer. This particular piece One of the most significant changes at BHS in the past four years has been the advent of the computer, for both classroom instruction and ad- ministrative applications. More than fif- ty terminals have been installed throughout the building, more than for- ty of which are for student use. The math department makes exten- sive use of the sixteen terminals cur- rently installed in Room 302 for a varie- ty of academic offerings and competi- tions. Mr. Odenwelder has also developed an after-school course on The computer age has arrived at BHS M of equipment provides a wealth of in- formation about colleges, based on a profile of characteristics selected by the student. The computer can offer a list of schools defined by area, cost, size, majors, etc. Mr. Koerner and Ms. Merish staff the main computer center in the recently renovated Annex Building. Student grades and attendance records are compiled and stored here. The equip- ment also processes interim reports and report cards for Butler schools and, on a rental basis, to several other districts. Over in the library, Mrs. Tintle has used her computer equipment to organize all the circulation records regarding overdue books. Fines are recorded and the printer even pro- duces fine notices on command. She and Mrs. Paulo have already catalogued all video tape cassettes and audio tapes and hope to eventual- ly catalogue the entire collection. Mrs. Tintle’s immediate plans include a tie- in to a main data base that can provide BHS students and staff with informa- tion about resources available from other libraries. Mr. Kralovich now has his own com- puter terminal to keep track of student attendance and blue-and-gold status. Several faculty members use their own home computers for record-keeping and curriculum materials and report that some students are using home computers for their schoolwork. As the computer takes over the workplace and becomes more affordable, there may be one in your future. Butler on stage — “Guys and Dolls” Early in December, the long awaited announcement came. The spring musical was to be “Guys and Dolls.” Hopeful high school actors and ac- tresses displayed their talents at the nerve-wracking auditions. After four strenuous days of singing, dancing, and acting, the students waited for the decisions. These, according to direc- tor, Miss Belinfante, were not easy ones to make. This year, a number of people auditioned for the same parts. Eventually, however, the cast list was posted and, almost immediately, rehearsals began. The musical starred Kerri Ann Kelleher as Sara Brown, Clayton Lust as Nathan Detroit. Jeff Heller as Sky Masterson, and Chris Booth as Adelaide. Other leads includ- ed Eric Basham and Dave Anderson. Miss Belinfante was assisted by technical director, Mr. McConnell and choreographer, Mrs. Schneider. Mrs. Barbara Hegner, musical director, was assisted by Jackie Hinkey. Under this supervision, the students practiced five days a week and even sacrificed Satur- days for the production. After four months of seemingly endless rehear- sals, the cast of “Guys and Dolls” faced the public and put on a spec- tacular performance. The nights of March 28, 29. and 30 turned out to be truly gratifying for all of those who had taken the time to create its success. Everyone who attends BHS is aware of the annual high school musical, but there are other talent activities which do not receive as much notoriety or publicity. In December, Butler had its second annual play competition. Each grade level, supervised by Miss Belin- fante, presented a short one-act play, directed and performed by their peers. This year the seniors won best play and best actor, but the juniors swept most of the awards including best directors, best actress, best costumes and best set. The sophomores took the award for best speciality act, while the freshmen put on a great show. A few weeks following the play com- petition, Butler’s musicians and singers took the spotlight when they perform- ed the annual Christmas Concert. The students did a magnificent job of per- forming traditional as well as unfamiliar Christmas and Hanukkah carols. The choir and Good-As-Gold Singers, under the direction of Mr. James, and the Concert Band, conducted by Mr. Bychek, ended the evening on an emo- tional note as BHS alumni joined the students on stage for the finale. The dreariness of February was briefly dispelled by the Talent Show, organized by the Student Council and its advisors, Mrs. Baruth and Mrs. Macdonald. The students enjoyed a variety of acts, from the seriousness of a classical piano piece to the zaniness of “The Boys From Pasadena.” As usual the Talent Show was a major success. If you didn’t know before, you know now that Butler High School is a class act. 138 p. 138: (clockwise from top left) Joe Dillon; Bryan DeGraw; Bryan and Jett Vanderhoff; Laurie Romeo. p. 139: (clockwise from top left) Jackie Hinkey and Heather Foster; Choir Members; Jim Lenthe; Mathew Brozowski and Tom Timmerman; Chris Haney. 139 A school away from school Conscientious teachers and happy students in a positive atmosphere with the most modern architecture and equipment provides for a workable and valuable education. “Where is this school?” It’s Morris County Vocational and Technical School, better known as Vo-Tech. From the outside, the four-building complex, only three years old, is modern, matching the up-to-date equipment in every department. The up-beat, yet relaxed, atmosphere is created by teachers and students both obviously doing something they enjoy. The instruction is geared to the work- ing world and the teachers encourage their students to work independently in an adult and responsible fashion. The program offered includes such diverse courses as computer program- ming and carpentry, cooking and cosmetology, auto mechanics and engineering. The students display a seriousness and sense of enjoyment about their class instruction, much of which is hands-on practical experience in their chosen field. Many of these students already have promises of employment before graduation because employers respect the quality of training given at VoTech. The Vo-Tech students spend part of their day here at BHS, completing academic requirements and physical education. But you can tell by the at- mosphere at Tech that, for most of. them, that is where the real learning takes place. Our BHS students are for- tunate to have the opportunity to go to the outstanding trade school that is Morris County Vo-Tech. 140 141 BHSon the job How am I going to study for a sociology test, write an essay for English, finish my Chem lab and buy my boyfriend a present ... when I have to work tonight until 10!!” Sound familiar?? For many BHS students, the pro- blem of juggling the demands of school and a job is very real. Some receive help in finding and keeping a good position through participation in one of our three work-study programs. Most students, however, face the task on their own, or with a little help from their friends. The more fortunate student finds employment in one of the local businesses, a necessity for underclassmen without wheels.” Seniors travel further, to Willowbrook and beyond, in search of lucrative positions. For some, this is the beginn- ing of a career. For others, it is a source of much-needed cash, to meet current expenses or to save for col- lege. For nearly all, it means a long and demanding day of trying to get everything done. 142 143 145 The night everyone dreams about — Prom Night — was a most en- chanted evening and a huge success. On Friday, May 24th, couples gathered at Birchwood Manor and danced away the evening to the ex- citing sound of “Fresh Heir.” Right from the start, the Junior- Senior Prom was a success when more than 150 students stood on line in mid-February to buy bids. Led by junior class advisor, Miss Fenton, the class officers began planning during the summer of 1984. Their efforts were certainly obvious on prom night. Appropriately, the theme the of- ficers chose was “Tender Years.” The title seemed especially apropos to the seniors, for whom the prom is the “last hurrah” of all those good years with close friends and special memories. This year’s prom was an elegant finale and a truly enchanted evening. 146 “Tender Years” — another beautiful memory! We were now upperclassmen. It was a time that was to hold many fresh experiences and rewards for past ef- forts. For example, gym was no longer a daily event. Instead, it was taken only 3 days a week. Those endless hours of driver’s education, still vivid in our memories, proved themselves useful as many of us received our licenses. Purchasing class rings, we truly had a sense of being upperclassmen. The junior-senior prom brought the year to a climax with an unforgettable evening of fun and friendship. Although junior year has quickly come to a close, it has left us with even greater expectations of the year to come. As many of us remember, 10th grade has a tendency to become monotonous. Sophomores are often lost between freshmen and upperclassmen. While the other classes are applying for colleges or familiarizing themselves with the school, the sophomores are sitting back to wait .. . wait. This year was going to be different. By selling candles, under the supervision of class advisor Mrs. Goertz, the class tried to raise enough money to take a trip. They also planned a festive Valentine’s Day dance. Through undertaking such projects, the sophomores set an excellent example for the freshman to follow. The sophomore class now has next year to look forward to when they will finally become — Upperclassmen. Despite its size the class was enthusiastic and eager to learn. With Mrs. deWaal as class advisor, it exerted much of its energy on such ac- tivities as football, cheering, basket- ball, the play competition and Student Council. The freshman officers were President, Sean Mabey, Vice Presi- dent, Ray Velez, Secretary, Leanne Sitgreaves, and Treasurer, Debbie Mc- Clean. Being very supportive of their class, the freshmen raised money this year by selling wrapping paper, rib- bons, tissue paper, and tags, from November 16-26.
