The adventure of BHS was just beginning four years ago. “August 28. 1980 a Freshman Orientation will be held. All Freshmen are required to attend.” This phase opened the door to four years of Halloween Dances, pep rallies, candy sales, carnation sales, and ticket sales for various functions. We’ve been led through four seasons of every sport. We’ve seen new organizations take root over the years, and old ones disappear. We’ve seen the pac-mans, the preppies, the punks, the General Hospital fans, and the members only. We’ve seen the smurfs, the Valley Girls. MTV. the ”Z”, and “Another One Bites the Dust.” As each new class enters BHS, we are pushed along to face new dilemmas. And now we collect the bundle of memories and every trace of our existence and move along. Whichever way this journey will lead, the experience of BHS has left a definite impression and will forever remain a part of us. Sure. I've Got A Girl In Every Port. . We Are The Champions? Beth Buchanan. Dawn Mabey. Jill Scialla. Maryann Poalillo. Marge Baumann. Sue Hoffman, and Nanette Palazzi 1980-1981. Freshman Boys’ Basketball 1980-1981. 29 “9GNIOR 9WU9’ They call it Senior Status, and without a doubt, it's around. A condition affecting all Seniors, it commands constant attention, and results in a profound disdain for underclassmen. Seniors are immediately distinguishable by their air of superiority, and the smug declaration, “Senior Privilege, as they take advantage of one of their many opportunities. Take the Blue and Gold Pass, for example. It is definitely in great demand, for this little gem allows escape from the agony of study halls and early dismissal from lunch periods. And where does such escape lead one? Seniors on Blue and Gold are commonly found in the library, courtyard, or in the ever-popular Senior Lounge, relaxing with the stereo or their favorite soaps and game shows. But what price this passport to freedom? Seniors must maintain passing grades in all of their classes and be absent no more than four times a marking period to be eligible for a Blue and Gold pass. And that isn't the end of the opportunities available in one’s Senior year. Seniors are also recipients of Late Arrival and Early Dismissal privileges, as well as a prestige which brings them straight to the front of the cafeteria’s lunch lines. It is said that “good things come to those who wait; Senior Status is a positive confirmation of that old adage! DEPENDABLE AND RESPONSIBLE ATTITUDE TOWARDS SCHOOL POLICIES AND REGULATIONS. Student's Name 30 Principal The National Honor Society is a society of students who have been commended for their fine scholastic record, participation in school activities, and excel- lent community service. Over the course of the year, the group provides many programs within the school as well as in the surrounding community. These programs include a tutoring program for the elementary and middle schools, upkeep of Butler Park’s Christmas decorations, and a leafraking service for senior citizens. Within the school, N.H.S. provides educational programs such as “50’s Day.” This day is dedicated to learning more about the 1950’s in each individual class as well as sock-hop dancing in the gym. Each student is asked to come dressed in typical clothes of the era. This project is a new one and hopefully will be successful. The society also sponsors many activities for its own members. During December, they are involved in Christmas Carolling in Bloomingdale and Butler and, in the spring, they will attend a Broadway play. They also raise funds through the sale of Thanks- giving Day Corsages and other items. N.H.S. members, past and present, believe it is a distinct honor to belong to such an organization. -DAVE BROOKS- 1983-84 OFFICERS: President..................Alison Mariconda Vice-President............Jeffrey Anderson Secretary...................Susan Hoffman Treasurer.....................Michael Lopez 1983-84 INDUCTEES Joanne Abicca Claire Fratello Linda Iannacone Susan Ricci aerie D€ W CR€M€ S. Michiko Arao 901IOK BRO D Kim Califano Although many of us, during our high school years, seldom venture beyond the protective shelter of our familiar localities, these three Seniors have broken away” to travel abroad and see some of the world! JIM McCLEAN, during the summer of his Junior year, went to France with the International Studies Abroad (I.S.A.) program, to study French at the Universite de Caen. He spent three weeks taking undergraduate classes at the university and another week touring the cities of Normandy. Jim especially enjoyed seeing the different types of architecture and sampling the various foods. KIM CALIFANO spent four months of her Junior year living with her aunt and uncle in England. She attended Kingswood. a private boarding school, and enjoyed the added bonus of playing on their field hockey team. Kim made many friends with whom she is still in touch, and particularly liked seeing England’s historic cities. MICHIKO ARAO is an exchange student at B.H.S. this year. Originally from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, she is living with the Doyle family of Butler during her stay in the U.S.A. Michiko is here on a program from the Rotary Club, and is looking forward to a white winter, as she has never seen snow before. The three students seem to agree that their ventures abroad have been invaluable experiences, which they would eagerly repeat if given the opportunity. I've heard of it. but just exactly what is it?” This is the most common answer students give when they hear the name Jerseymen. Well, it’s time to give the Jerseymen some credibility. Technically. Jerseymen is the student membership of the New Jersey Historical Society, making this club a statewide program. Its headquarters is located in Newark. The Jerseymen's members are greatly interested in the research and preservation of local and state history. Two members of the Jerseymen. Darlene Kimble and Tom Timmerman, are currently members of the Jerseymen on a state level, too. Darlene Kimble is Executive Vice President and Tom Timmerman is on the Morris County Board of Governors. The Jerseymen will be attending two conventions throughout the 1983-84 school year. The November convention, located in Princeton, was tri-state involving New York. Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Tours are given of the area, guest speakers lecture on historical events, and slide presentations are given. The second convention is a state convention. It is scheduled for the beginning of May. During the Christmas Holidays the Jerseymen held a Victorian party and a Crafts Day. Crafts are sold during this event, and a tree is set up so those who wish to donate decorations and decorate the tree can do so. As you can see. the Jerseymen have really been on their toes and have done a tremendous job. Would you like to know something about New Jersey?! Who better to ask than a Jerseyman! They are responsible for most of the activities which go on. It also gives the students a chance to speak out by submitting complaints to the grievance committee. The Student Council's school year begins in August with their annual Together Day. This enables incoming freshman and those who are currently involved in Student Council to get acquainted and plan the year's activities. The first activity on their agenda was the class elections in which each class is able to choose its class officers. It is the class officers who plan each grades activities. During November they held the ever popular 2nd annual Campus King Pageant. The money which they raised was donated to the Hemophiliac Foundation. Also in November the Harvest Ball was held. It was at this dance that the Harvest King and Queen were announced. The winners were Maureen Morse and Glenn Vandarlaan. Throughout December the Student Council was kept busy with the Senior citizens. They visited a Senior Citizen's Home, and a Christmas party was held for them in the High School cafeteria. The Student Council started off the New Year by attending the NJASC annual convention. Later on in March they held the Talent Show. This gave students a chance to show off their stuff. Finally they wound up the school year with their annual spring business meeting at Great Adventure. As one can see the Student Council is not just another organization. Although the Seniors did not meet their $15,000 goal for sales, they came very close by selling over $13,000 worth of sub- scriptions. Seniors who sold over certain amounts of subscriptions won pens, mascots, mugs, and discounts toward yearbooks, caps and gowns, and prom payments. Anyone who sold over $300 worth of subscriptions will be going on a trip to Neil's New Yorker for dinner and a show. The top two homerooms, which were Mr. Bychek’s Band homeroom and Ms. VanOrden's homeroom, went to the annual pizza party and the number-one selling Band homeroom adopted Raul the Bear. The 1983 Northern Hills Conference had some pretty tough competition, including two teams that were top in the state. Although the team was not as victorious as Ms. Benne had hoped, there were many closely contested games. The highlight of the schedule was the DePaul game, Earlier in the season, but this time, the girls rallied to a 1-0 victory. All-Conference honors went to Allison Antonelli, who received All-Morris County and All-Area Paterson News awards. Goalie Denise Merusi was named to the second team All-Conference, and received an honorable mention for Morris County and the News. She also gained an honorable mention from the NJFHA. In addition to this, they ran for a third place finish in the Section II state race for the Group II state semi- finals. There, one runner. Heidi Schimpf, even qualified for the Meet of Champions. Many highly skilled teams were included in the Bulldog’s schedule this season because of a change of conference. This, however, did not stop the Bulldogs from playing each succeeding game as aggressively as the last, with many games undecided until the last quarter. It should also be mentioned that most of the games were lost by a single point. These close matches were a result of the team’s competitiveness, effort and limitless enthusiasm for the game. After surpassing a few difficult opponents, such as Morris Catholic and Lakeland, the team was able to win another conference championship. The post season play proved to be just as exciting, with Butler defeating Roselle and Hillside to retain the championship. The final game against Hillside was well played and went down to the wire with a 16-8 victory for Butler. The team based their success on a positive attitude through- out the season. Through the guidance of Ms. Giles, an expert and well-respected coach, the girls played three strong games against Kinnelon, De Paul and Morris Catholic. Although none of these games resulted in victories, they held their own against the toughest teams in the league. Leading the team was co-captain Margie Baumann, who. according to Ms. Giles, is excellent on defense and an extremely quick player. The coach also had high praise for the other co-captain. Pauline Del Mauro. Her strong rebounding skills and defensive plays really helped the female bulldogs. Returning for next year's team will be scoring leader Denise Merusi. Kim Mahon, Karen Donnelly, and Jackie Jones. Ms. Giles hopes that next year, the team will be more experienced and stronger rebounders. Good luck on a successful season in the future!!! No, it's only a member of our fencing team. Fencing, the least understood sport in our school, is really fascinating. Fencing is a European sport which has become increasingly popular in the United States in the last thirty years. This Olympic sport utilizes three weapons, the sabre, the foil, and the epee, each of which is a style of sword. The objective is to manipulate the weapon to achieve a touch, contact with the opponent on a designated target, while protecting yourself from the opponent's weapon. Five touches constitute a bout and scores a point. In a meet, there are nine foil bouts, nine sabre bouts, and nine epee bouts. This year, the team had some 22 members, led by overall captain Jim McClean, a four-year team member. John Giannouris, another four-year veteran, was captain of the sabre team, while Jim Pisarz, a second-year fencer, captained the foil team. Other seniors on the team were Tim Erwin, Sal DiSalvio, and Mike Biemer. The season record of 1-12 was disappointing, despite the victory over Morris Knolls. However, the team did quite well in the District II tournament, placing second with the epee team and third with the foil. The team looks forward to next season's successes, under the able coaching of Mr. Kurt Hanisch, assisted by Mr. Ken Carpenter. Senior Captain Jim McClean flashes a little fencing style. Butler offers a program in cooperation with Morris County Vocational-Technical School. This program offers students the chance to attend Butler for half of the day to take academic subjects. Patiently guided by a psychology teacher named Mr. Malzone. a group of juniors has been planning and producing editions of The Bark, a relatively young school newspaper. Covering everything from teenage drug abuse to football championships to soap opera junkies. The Bark attempts to portray fresh viewpoints on whatever they are writing. To achieve this, interviews as well as firsthand experiences are utilized. For example, a story written about the ski team involved an actual account of a typical day in the life of a ski team member so that the reader could taste life on the team. Another story included personal interviews with our school administrators. Humor has also found a place within the pages of The Bark. Amusing articles have analyzed such topics as childhood Christmases and high school dates. Cartoons create a frame for these. Naturally, though, as this is a newspaper, informative accounts of activities and events compose a major section of the paper. When the junior officials made promises, The Bark was there to follow progress and inform the school. This combination of insight, humor and information has created a successful paper. The Bark. It was to be a summary of life at Butler High School, treasured by former students for a lifetime. Decisions had to be made. What shall be included? How can what is included be compiled in an orderly but interesting way? Undertaking this tremendous task of creating the yearbook had to have some effect on those who chose to do so. Unavoidable areas of dis- agreement had definitely promoted the perfec- tion of compromise, cooperation, and coordin- ation. Organization also became a skill. Most rewardingly. though, there arrived the sighs and smiles of accomplishment, a task at last complete. 157 m You can't go out in weather like this! There's supposed to be a storm tonight!!” “I know! But this is my senior dinner, Mom, and I’m not going to miss it because of a few snowflakes! ‘‘Well, all right. But drive carefully! A lot of seniors probably had conversations like this on their way out the door to the Class of 1984 Senior Dinner, but neither snow, nor rain, nor dark of night could possibly have kept them away. Thanks to the Student Council, which planned the get-together at the Town Tavern in West Milford, the Senior Class got to celebrate the arrival of the beginning of the end” with each other. And not even a predicted blizzard could keep them away. In fact, the storm was a bit of relief from the sweltering heat inside caused by the band. Donneybrook, as they got the seniors out onto the dance floor. From the looks of things, even the chaperones, Mr. DiPasquale, Mrs. Liddicoat, and Ms. Van. had a good time! A moment of quiet conviviality. The band. Donneybrook. featured Butler's own Cal Van Etten and |ohn and Kerri Kelleher. DINNO Gumby says “Vote Gold - Darn It!” This and other campaign slogans were seen hanging in the hallways during the )unior Officials Program. This program gave seniors an opportunity to undertake the responsibility of administrative positions in the school and town for a day. It also enables the student body to become familiar with the voting process by registering to vote and using actual voting machines. Music in the cafeteria and greater freedom to use the courtyard during lunch periods were the major issues concerning the school. Town issues included tax reduction in both Butler and Bloomingdale and the quality of the water supply. The Blue Party or the People's party was victorious winning a majority of the available positions. For the underclassmen, mid-term exams came first scaring them with a whole half year of notes to study. —And then, less than two weeks after exams, came news of the History Fair. Yes. the dreaded paper-mache and old plastic army men had to be dug out of the closet to be put into use as one ingredient of a super-creative History Fair project. Some super creativity wasn’t hard to find at this year’s fair held on Friday. March 22. The 10 projects chosen best in the fair were: A Schoolhouse - Mario Biazzo St. Anthony's Effect on Butler - Alice Bleignier. Karen Barauskus The Family in American History - Amy Demarest Barnegat Lighthouse - Dave Engelhaupt A Blacksmith’s Shop - Todd and Chris Gregory Early Medieval Armor - Mark Imbimbo The Manor - Joey Longo Portland's Lighthouse - Kathleen Lyons Inside View of a Pyramid - Bridget Occhipinti The Graveyard of the Atlantic - Ken Vanderhave In addition to these 10 projects, the judges chose four additional projects for Special Commendation. They were: Early Woodwinds and Their Impact on Society - Eric Basham Black Earth - John Dzubera. Mike Paulo. Mark Rode Odd Facts About the Presidents - Joe Dillon Richard Butler: A Man About Town - Luanne Osterhoudt. Sharon Rosa. Marcia Vanderbas This year’s fair went very smoothly thanks to its coordinator. Mrs. Hoeflinger. along with a little help from her friends in the History Department. Mrs. Hoeflinger's overall impression of the fair was a positive one. She said, of course, there were a lot of those old standby projects that we see every year. But she also saw a tremendous amount of creativity and originality. This year was a turning point for the fair because we saw two projects that utilized home computers. Also, the fair's theme. The Family in History. was incorporated in some very interesting ways. Mrs. Hoeflinger was extremely pleased with the innovative projects that highlighted the fair this year. As Saturday morning dawns, and all participants in the fair come to pick up their projects, each of them breathes a sigh of relief. For the sophomores, never again will they deal with glue-on-fingers, or paper-mache. However, the freshmen have to look forward to another year of stretching their creative capacity. Sorry. Freshmen! THE hMRLGtl The Harlem Wizards came to Butler High School for an evening of hilariously outrageous antics when they met a valiant team of faculty members, includ- ing our own T. Hamilton. J. Vogel, B. Jones, and T. McGarrity. The entire student body and faculty got a sample of the evening's entertainment when Tex of the Wizards made a special preview presentation of his skills and showman- ship at an assembly program. Junior Mike Maresca upheld the honor of the high school team when he took the floor and matched Tex, shot for shot, and, with his own great sense of humor, stunt for stunt. as well. butler high school PRereirtt... Each year in early December, BHS's thea- trically inclined students impatiently await the announcement of the Spring Musical. Audi- tions are a tense time, followed by a few agonizing days before the cast list is finally posted. This year's production was Mame, under the direction of Miss Sylvia Belinfante, with senior Ann Meier as Assistant Director. Mr. McConnell served as Technical Director and advisor to the stage crew, assisted by Darlene Kimble. Stage Crew Manager. Musical Direc- tors were Mr. Bychek and Mr. lames. Adding to the uniqueness of the play was the fact that students were involved in every phase of the production. Besides holding lead roles. Christina Dore (Marne Dennis) and Dave Brooks (Patrick Dennis) also choreographed the dance numbers. Dave also designed the sets for the show. Other leads included Jeff Anderson. Chris Booth, Cathy Bulmer, Chris Frey. Charlie Hiller. Laurie Lime, Kim Morris. Gary Murphy. Eric Raso. Lori Raso, Ann Sheehan, Jerry VanderBas, and Chris Weiner. Working on an almost completely inexperienced staff - myself included - presented a challenge, to say the least! But I feel we have come through it with a new understanding, not only of the production of a yearbook, but of our own strengths and limits, especially in working on budgeted time. I would like to thank everyone who invested their time and energy in The 1984 Nugget - the staff, our advisor, Mrs. Sokoloff, and the administration, whose cooperation in creating a place in which to work was especially appreciated. Cathy Bulmer Co-Editor-In-Chief Many new challenges faced the Yearbook staff in September. Such challenges required hard work and support from all angles. The past year dealing with such situations and work- ing with staff members has been an unforgettable experience. We have learned a great deal about the re- search. development, and techniques of creating a memorable yearbook. We'd especially like to thank Mrs. Sokoloff. the staff advisor, and the entire staff. Without them, this year's yearbook would have been impossible to create. Laurie Wenzel Co-Editor-In-Chief Thirteen score and a few days ago, our administration brought forth in this high school, a new yearbook adviser and staff, conceived in confusion, and dedicated to the proposition that any group of people foolish enough to take on the job could somehow manage to produce a yearbook. I hope Mr. Lincoln will forgive the creative license with his memorable opening lines voiced on that historic day at Gettysburg, but the analogy seemed so appropriate. Looking back over this past year is not unlike surveying a battlefield. The staff of Nugget '84 has come through a war—with experience and ignorance, with timetables and deadlines, with conflicting obligations, and sometimes, with each other. We avoided bloodshed, but not a few tears and more than a few angry words along the way. Yet, We struggled on to create what we hope will be a lasting remembrance of the Class of '84. For the staff and myself, I would like to thank Mr. DiPasquale and the administration for their support and cooperation and for providing us with a place to do our work, to Mr. Potenza and the business staff for their effort and expertise in handling the finances and advertising chores, to Mr. Keith Marley of Delma Studios for his help and moral support whenever we needed him. to Mrs. Hawkins for sharing her office when our space overflowed with work to be done, to Mr. Rathyen and my colleagues in the history department for answering countless telephone calls and relaying innumerable incoherent messages and for putting up with my frequent fits of temper and seiges of depression, to my students for somehow managing to learn their lessons despite interruptions for yearbook business, and to the parents of the staff, who probably wondered what their children could possibly be doing at the high school until 7:00 p.m., and later, on more than one occasion. To the staff of Nugget '84,1 would like to extend my gratitude for the opportunity of working with you this year. I hope you are as proud of what you have accomplished as I am of all of you. Mrs. Cynthia Sokoloff Yearbook Adviser
