• cT- • 'ANf X I Nugget 1980 ' Butler, High School Butler, New Jersey Table of Contents I enter my phenomenon pandering curiously through my keyhole of desire. My eyes notice restless fantasies exploding my mind with the idea of freedom. Tingles trill down my skin. Make note of these abstract Brain Games Growing and Grabbing at reality. Of frantic fantastic fantasy — Come from behind that bolted door! I wish to put you on, then play for a while. Take me on and thrust me through that porthole of pride — my keyhole of imaginings. I swear to wear you well Come now — let's pretend. More tomorrows shade my dying days. It is time to unveil my dream of life. Dread not the uncertainty but the excitement of the dare. Realism has faded as a last memory, for it was bathed in warm waters of wishing. Come now — let's pretend Chip away the scaly rust about my keyhole of fantasy Take me on, Let's pretend Denise Demarest Woodsman Found f M man was recently found in the woodsy region of Federal Hill living in the rugged style of a late 1800's outdoors- man Identifying himself as John Cavallaro, he demonstrated the many skills needed for survival in the wilderness John prefers his rough lifestyle as compared to city or suburban dwelling. Bon Voyage! he people, streets and historic places of Europe have drawn Anita and Jackie to the Old World. They are enjoying the sites and sounds of all the countries as they explore their lan- guages, cultures and customs. Excellent cuisine and hearty drinks top off each day of travel and study as the girls converse with Mademoiselles and Frau- leins. 5 Youngest Member of Supreme Court Named Chief Justice f t ongress has approved the President's V selection of Mern Horan as Chief justice of the United States Supreme Court. As a liberal, Mern's first actions will be to try to bring the mood of the court back to the civil rights rulings of the Warren court. Horan is best known for her outspoken support of women's rights and affirmative action. 6 Lucky Jim Makes Killing in Stock Market M hrough patient investment and con- f stant awareness of stock market fluctu- ation, ex-accountant Jim DiOrio made his first million in only six months. Jim is pictured here with his first purchase. 7 Sit-in Comes to an End ? m Vhief Johan Anggard smokes his pipe V after completing peace talks with the administration at Butler High School. For the past three weeks, Johan has refused to move from this spot, claiming that it is the site of his ancestral burial grounds After extensive negotiations, Johan agreed to allow use of the stage on the condition that the auditorium be dedicated to his ances- tors and renamed Anggard Auditorium Does Cindy Have the Calling? ister Cynthia recently took the vows of the Order of Quiet Nuns. Sister Cindy said she could foresee no difficulty in maintaining the mandatory twenty-four hour period of silence. She was given only five demerits for breaking the silence. 8 Nancy Daleo - Star of Ballroom ancy Daleo, renowned dancer, has been referred to as the new Ginger Rogers of ballroom dancing Statements such as these have been circulating since Nancy took to the professional dancing circuit. Po-dda, 49 Lisa Bremer Scott Shiftman eath is a fact which does not have a universal definition; we all have our individual interpretations. However, when recalling how Lisa, Scott, and Charlie were taken from us, we should not speculate on what could have been. Rather, let us remember fondly what was. 50 Charles Smith We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun You shared your love and laughter with so many And now so many express their sorrow and sadness For the love and laughter that will be missing without you. . and the memories that have passed all the seasons will outlast. Seasons have passed each slightly emptier; your presence your friends can't forget. Without you they seem to regret words never mentioned. were buried inside not often put out on display. The snow of your life so precious to many, was abruptly melted away. Lisa Bermingham 51 The transition from freshmen fantasies to senior realities is not an easy one Dreams and aspirations don't necessarily stop; they merely change their shape Suddenly who goes with whom to the dance and talking to guess who in 12th grade are overshadowed by col- lege essays, cap and gown measure- ments and graduation tears But for now, these are all in the future and it's enough for us to participate in all Butler High School has to offer, while becoming increasingly aware of our talents and others contribu- tions. Witty K Zelles k-V v I , Time to eat for Tom STUDENT LIFE Champions, a tri-screen media experience presented at an assem- bly earlier this year, accurately sums up student life We are all free to be ourselves and shape our fantasies into realities. No longer is it merely the auditorium, but Broadway Melodies as would be Sarah Bernhardt's and Fred Astaire's storm the stage in Bye, Bye Birdie. Whether it's a quick smile or sleepy wink exchanged across the classroom, the crowning of Harvest King and Queen, or ear- splitting shrieks at the De Paul pep rally, each event adds a new memory of individual achievement and group enjoyment. 100 The Year That Was ... The closing months of the 70's were at hand as school opened to a particularly mild September. In the calm before the storm, the football and field hockey teams worked toward repeat performances of last year's stunning championships and nervous Freshmen accustomed themselves to mysterious corridors. As the nation felt the grip of inflation, Butler students also spent their extra cents as the hot lunch soared from the traditional bOt to 651 and the favorite 10£ luxury cookie shrank to a 15£ subcompact model Gold prices rocketed, yet we managed to muster the Big Blue and just enough glitter for an outstanding spirit week that featured hat, shade, overall and Senior T-shirt day October saw a world upside down as Khomeni came to power, 50 Americans were taken hostage, a storm hit Butler and De Paul romped in football With such a crisis at hand, Seniors forgot Carey Avenue's potholes and graduation itch in the wake of a gas shortage and possible draft Gudonov and Baryshnikov made headlines as our Harvest Ball Dance crowned the King and Queen of 1979. Champions message of individuality gave many an added boost in a cold and dreary month Christmas cards weren't the only last minute items crammed in the mail as college-bound Seniors frantically respected the January 1st application deadline. Snow arrived at last burying the Interact Club's hope of a Kilbarchin Christmas till after the Holidays January and February boggled Carter's mind with Afghanistan and students minds with exams. As Carter, Reagan, Anderson, Bush and Kennedy vie for the 80 election, Butler students filed their own choices for candidates in the Junior Officials Program. The nation faces key decisions as do the Seniors with their futures so close at hand But the immediate sphere promises to be a time of special memories as we look to the Prom, 1980 Nugget, trips, and graduation. 102 Just To Dance With You Perhaps the favorite social events of any school are its dances and B H.S is certainly no exception. Beginning with the Harvest Ball Dance to top off an exciting fall sports season, our 1979 King Dave Churchill and Queen Amy Mataro were crowned before a tense and excited crowd Although dances back to back are often unsuccessful, this was proven a myth by an October Halloween Dance that combined great food, wild music and zany costumes for an enjoyable evening. Hearts were worn on sleeves and every place else as Butler sweethearts boogied at the annual Valentine's Day Dance. For a change of pace the final dance of the year was a genuine Knee slapping hoe down preceded by a hick day. 105 T3 The Curtain Rises After months of practice, we will be treated to a greatly missed event — A musical here at B.H.S. On April 24th - 26th, director Ms. Belinfante and her talented cast will present Bye, Bye Birdie to the public. Although patience can be worn thin and the tension of learning not only lines but complicated dance steps and vocal pieces can be wearing, the end result is sure to be a master- piece. The play deals with the affect, heart throp Conrad Birdie, has on small town girls. Besides the intricate choreography and musical numbers, Mr. McConnel has a highly competent stage crew to ensure proper lighting and sound. So, when the curtain rises, there's no doubt that Bye, Bye Birdie will bring down the house! 106 Life in the Real... johan Anggard, Stefan Michels, Peter Cade I remember the confusing experience of first coming here all the big cars, hamburgers and parties going to church and a different school a new family situation Who am I, you ask. I'm johan Anggard, the Swedish exchange student, and I'm also one of you. I've discussed the experience with Stefen Michels and Peter Cade, our exchange stu- dents from Germany and Denmark. As things became familiar, we soon discovered how people really are very similar here and well, back there I can't really say back home , because now this is home , too The one problem that we had to get used to was the feeling that the students didn't have much to say about a lot of the issues in school At the same time, we enjoyed the way we could choose our curriculum more freely than at home. We also enjoyed all the clubs and sports activities that were very valuable to us in getting to know the people in the school These moments aren't only experienced by us, the foreign exchange students, but are shared by all. It's the warm satisfying feeling of learning new things, overcoming the fear, and adjusting to new situations. 108 109 o Junior-Senior Girls Hit the Gridiron On a crisp fall day the gallant male gridders of B.H.S were sweetly shoved off the field by two talented new teams. Yes, those same smiling faces seen every week in cheering and field hockey skirts, band front dresses and cross country or gymnastics uniforms now showed up in tough Tee's and sneakers ready to hit the dirt. A close match saw Pam Liddicoat scoring the winning touch-down to wrap up another exciting version of the annual Junior-Senior football game The air was heavy with competition as coaches Coscia and Mulligan cheered their gals to victory. All in all the end result was a lot of fresh air, fun and a tense, but rowdy game 111 1980s I Do you own gold? A ALEXANDER, JOHN 9 Woodward Ave . Their skills and experiences set the framework for our own personal goals. Each portrays an outward proficiency in their specific area as well as bringing a wealth of insight into the needs of individual stu- dents. These unique student- teacher relationships that develop over the course of four years will not soon be forgotten. 116 Mr. John Becker Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Robin Seifert Mr. George Delcorso 118 Mr. Frank Stranzl Mr. Charles Ebers Mr. Donald Hawkins Assistant Superintendent Business Administrator Mr. James Smith Assistant Principal Mr. Benjamin Goldberg Principal Mr. John Kushner Coordinator of Special Services School Psychologist Mr. Joseph DiPasquale Assistant to the Principal Mr. Timothy McGovern Director of Student Personnel Services Mr. Paul Maggio Mr. William Van Houten Mr. Richard McCracken Board President Mr. Edwin Nyklewicz Mr. Irving McDonald Board Vice President Mr. Amzie Parcell 119 New Family Relations As the savory aroma of popcorn and chocolate chip cookies mixes with the repulsive stench of turpentine, the second floor of the new building adjusts itself to its new family — the related arts department A dynamic family feeling as well as many added conveniences have developed as a result of the new location. Ms. Rembold and Ms Van Orden are busy moving in to their luxurious new nests as Mr. Capasso learns stimulating information by cutting in on the psychology and sociology classes in an often futile effort to reach his office. Art, graphic and home ec students agree that being able to share equipment makes every project a little easier. And isn't the decorated hallway a nice reflection on you? Flowery verbiage of love is making Ms. Ciccarelli gag in creative writing even while Ms. Creamer is praising a new rendition of vandalism in literary form With the new emphasis on proper writing, fewer eyebrows are being raised now when we re writing compositions on Gym and Auto Shop The heated discussions that stem from the Honor's class' journey into famous works are evidence that English is alive and good (?) at Butler High School Sylvia Belinfonte—Drama, Forensic Advisor Eager faces yearn for knowledge. You know you're near mechanical drawing when Janet Quine is seen toting a drawing board that's bigger than she is, and Mr. M keeps sparks flying up in electronics, praying everyone con- nects the right circuit But besides offering a great deal of courses, it's great to have pro- fessionals in these departments to fix anything from typewriters to overhead projectors that break during the day. George Boughton The Numbers Game Students who tremble in the world of polygons, trapezoids and quadratic equations should beware of the Butler Math Department who take these things seriously as a standard part of the curriculum. Never let it be said, however, that the area of logic is a world without humor. Coach Roz loves to tell tales of the Butler Bowl Dogs as Mr. Hamilton brags of his talented runners. Even Mr. Odenwelder has been known to crack a smile at the warm reception students always give to his favorite magazine, The Mathematics Student . Given lots of homework, tests, quizzes. But Ms Van Orden and her troupe of art fans perservered the following sunny Saturday afternoon where mem- bers enthusiastically displayed stu- dent artwork near the football field for the enjoyment of students and community. Needless to say, the Art Club's experiences are not only limited to displaying artwork in and out of school Members explore the world of art through field trips and art festivals. The efforts of these students “■allow for a better appreciation of the arts in Butler As the deadline approaches, creators of the literary magazine, Shambella , frantically sort through samples of artwork and pages of prose and poetry The diligent efforts of Ms Ciccarelli's Kiddies produce a magazine filled with creative images and words The presses continue to roll in the graphic art department during the production of the school news- paper, Maple Leaf An informa- tive (yet. sometimes late) publica- tion which transforms mere stu- dents into journalists. It is the compilation of words and photographs which record the unique experiences of an entire school year. It is our hope that we have successfully captured the essence of 1980 within these pages. Yearbook production is a challenging learning experience for each and every individual on the Nugget Staff. I am delighted to have had the opportunity to work with an enthusiastic, devoted staff. At this time I would like to thank all who made the 1980 Nugget a reality. Appreciation is extended to Mr. Goldberg, Mr Smith, Delma Studios, Progress Associates, Mr. Frank Capasso, and the Butler Board of Education. I would like to express a special congratulations to the editors, Al Merusi and Nancy Daleo for their determination and dedication to the yearbook and staff. Thank you for being such special people . Congratulations to the graduating class of 1980; may you cherish the memories inside these covers and find pride in it and yourself. Nugget Advisor Ms. Gayle Rembold It brings me great pleasure to extend my appreciation to the 1980 Nugget Staff and its advisors It is indeed amazing to believe that such an enormous amount of work is finally complete, after many months of creative dedication. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Ms. Gayle Rembold, who was the stabilizing factor of the staff. On behalf of the entire Nugget Staff I would like to wish the best of luck in the future for the graduating seniors. May all of you find health and happiness during your lifetime. Al Merusi Editor-in-Chief Although the end of the year is famous for the contagious disease of the Senior Slide, for many, this is the beginning of a whirlwind of happenings. The soon-to-be traditional concert supported by the Student Coun- cil starring the Moonshine Mountain Boys in March was a night full of music and excite- ment. Within a short period of time, another form of art was displayed at Butler. The annual Humanities Festival allowed students to show-off their vari- ous art expertise. These demon- strations of the different work- ings of students in art related fields was in celebration of Youth Art Month. As April approached, many of the Butler guys were muster- ing up the nerve to ask a girl to the prom, and the girls were roving the many department stores for an unique gown. But before they were to experience the prom, many of the partici- pants were to attend a more serious dinner. The Induction Ceremony for the National Honor Society was held on May 22nd at the Wayne Manor. Three years of hard work was recognized by the administra- tion and parents, giving the members a sense of pride for all their efforts. Prom day arrived and the school grounds were filled with confusion The guys and gals received early excuses in pre- paration for their evening at the Westmount Country Club. And also, for the first time in Butler history, a student council din- ner was held to honor partici- pants with merits for dedication above and beyond their call.- As summer neared, the art exhibit, filled with its beauty and creative portraits, outlined natures colors. The atmosphere of many cultures was also expressed throughout the day of the language festival with food, music and clothes of the Span- ish, Mexican, German, and French. At our finish the yearbook staff dinner was held to honor the hardworking and devoted people who organized this year's yearbook. As their re- ward, each received a final copy of the 1980 Nugget Butler Proclaims • • • Despite temporary setbacks and few returning lettermen, the boy's track team proved themselves superior in the con- ference. Many school records were broken this year, yet Matt Lee's 33 year old record smash in the 200 m made him the obvious choice for M.V.P Being undefeated in the Skyline Conference and the Skyline Festival and Relay Champs, the team received the Triple Crown!
