Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1978 volume:

The river flows And goes its own way The trees will go and grow their own way. The mountain sleeps And keeps its own ways. For ’tho affecting And each reflecting each other, Each has a different history And a different destiny. Butler High School Dedication Miss Dina G. Nielsen January 1, 1919 - September 23, 1977 Miss Nielsen was a graduate of the Oakland Grammar School, Butler High School Montclair State Teachers’ College. She did her student teaching in the math department of Butler High School and began her teaching career here in September 1940. She was Senior Class Advisor for many years and the Math Department Chairman but gave up the latter because she wished to be around the students and loved her teaching profession. To the Memory of Miss Dina G. Nielsen Miss Nielsen. .. Whose dedication to teaching as well as to students was unequalled and never faltering. Miss Nielsen... Who spent numerous hours selflessly giving of her patience her knowledge and her love. A teacher, yet a friend. Miss Nielsen... Certainly, we respected her. We held her in highest esteem. But while our minds realized her intellectual capabilities, our hearts were penetrated by her goodness. Indeed, she will be remembered and loved by all who were touched by her person. And BHS will forever remain a little colder a little darker and, as our hearts, a little emptier without her. The present Gives a sigh and flies. 6 Reflections of the future On a thousand branching streams. The river we must cross Is always Deeper than it seems. And the depths of it so often Will drag down Our dearest dreams. Yet the sun will shine upon its face And wipe out every trace, erase The signs of sorrow, Leaving only.. . 7 Patricia Bannon Terry Barrett Cynthia Basham Roberta Babcock Birdy Priscilla Arnold Percy MEMORIES: Meetings at 3rd floor bathroom. The overall team record was 8-2. Five team members; Steve Silversey, Bruce Guenter, Scott Scholer, Rich Johnson and Don Buglino were selected to the All Conference Team. The team worked hard together conscientiously instead of individu- ally. It was a rewarding season, bouncing back twice after a defeat. It was very satisfying to Coach Davies and players to beat Pompton Lakes for the championship. VARSITY FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS C. Lilioa, J. Behre, S. Zelles (Co-capt.), S. Zapp, K. Benne (Coach), D. Lime (:Mgr.), K. Lipinski, E. Stiles, S. Waters, G. Orenge. This year the Butler Varsity Field Hockey team had eight outstanding players: Megg Gallarelli made the third team for the N.J. All State Field Hockey Team. Megg also made first team in the Skyline Conference with Kim Alheidt. Sharon Waters and Lisa Mataro placed in the second team in the Skyline Conference, while Honorable Mention went to Kim Lipinski, Elaine Stiles, Sue Prentzel and Junior Lori De Korte. These dedicated girls played a significant role in their successful season of 11-1-2 in the Conference. They earned second place behind Montville, but defeated them for the first time in three years. Their overall record was 12-3-2. They did extremely well considering the field condi- tions and the constant battle against rain. The J.V. Field Hockey team was number one and had only one goal scored upon their 9-0-2 record. Here's a roast for this Butler team, They lost the conference two years in a row, But they’re still the best team I II ever know. We started with captains Megg and Sue, Who sometimes wondered what they were supposed to do. Then the rest of the team followed behind, I wasn’t always sure of what I would find. But on the field they knew how to play, That’s why they were playing day after day. Lori D. was usually steady at stopping a ball, And if you watched Megg, she'd be down from a fall. When Alheidt was in, the offense would hide, And remember Kim L. she’s on the other side. Then there’s Sharon’s house which isn’t really her home. And Elaine in the center, from which she would roam. Now Lisa would shout, “I’m free over here”, And Megg really tried but couldn’t get it there. Now Gayle really searched to try to hit the goal, While Nancy tried hard to figure out her role. Annie was smart, she questioned my ways, And Kate really prayed for rain for two days. Sue took her time in practice and play. And Karen didn’t know if it was J.V. or stay. Ann Taggart’s great when she used that flick. And Jackie’s “Tiny but Tuff” with her hands on the stick. This year an assistant we finally got, An “international” man called Mr. Watt. Then finally the coach, who’s voice is quite clear, And if you stood close, she'd damage your ear, But that’s one way of showing I really did care, ’Cause I really loved coaching this team who’s so rare! Good Luck Seniors Coach Benne « mil m B. Kochka, J. Murphy, K. DeMott (Capt), J. Chinosi (Capt), S. Ball, S. Yokum, A. Barry. J. Ball, S. Sammon, M. Rowe, M. Horan, T. Clark, B. This year’s Girls’ Cross Country team, under the direction of Mr. Rutzler, ran to a State Sectional by a score of 57-63 over Jefferson. This made it the first state championship won by the girls’ team in their seven year history. They tied for first place in the conference with Pequannock. The girls’ desire to succeed and their extreme effort gave much pleasure to their coach. They should do well in the future when their lettermen return. 112 The 1977 Boys’ Cross Country team was basically an inexperienced team. All had graduated with the exception of Seniors: Andy Kinney, Paul Rowe and Mike Connell. A group of dedicated Juniors and Butler’s best ever Freshman team gained experience as the season progressed. By midseason, Butler finished 17th in the Seven State Elkins Distance Run in Elkins, West Virginia. From that point, the team finished in the top half of the Skyline Conference Meet and the State Sectionals. The future looks bright for the B.H.S. Boys’ Cross Country team. Individually, Andy Kinney was selected to the All Skyline Conference Team for the third straight year. In his top race of the year, he finished second in the State Sectional Championships; only 6 seconds behind the State Group Two Champion Runner. Butler’s Freshman team dominated as they took 10 of the top 24 places in the Nine Team Skyline Freshman Meet. Frank Blakely (Champion), Tom Megale, Ted Dore and Frank Firtek finished in the top ten. Mike (108) - District 14, won first place in the Butler Wrestling Tournament, Jeff (115) District 14, also took first Place. Rich (188) District 14, took third place. They were not as successful because of the loss of graduated members. However, Ralph Stellmacher, a four year varsity letter winner, has shown much skill and effort becoming one of the top racers in New Jersey. He led the Sparta Invitational Race coming in first overall. Wendy Tiger is a three year varsity letter winner. Both seniors competed for individual points in the United States Eastern Ski Association. T. Bergen, J. Outwater, N. Liloia, M. McGuiness, J. Seeger. J. Price, M. Horan, C. Goens (Mgr.), S. The year’s Varsity Basketball team had to overcome many obstacles; lack of height being the major difficulty. But they made up for the lack of offense with a tough hustling defense, teamwork, and great attitudes. Although wins were infrequent, the friendship and closeness of the team were qualities of what real success is all about. Coach Pasquale comments that the team’s outstanding achievement was in ‘stabilizing his ulcer . Other major difficulties were winning games and making those difficult two foot jump shots! What makes this year different from previous years? Coach Pasquale humorously comments, The basketball rims were smaller. Thanks for the memories. Varsity team. Good Luck Next Year! 120 J.V. A. Captains Toni Clark, Jeannine D’Angelo and Kathy Morse have shown a serious interest and talent in foil fencing. All three girls have won a majority of their bouts. It is also important to note that Dorothy Sabio, Freshman Foil Fencer, placed fourth in the State Foil Competitions. This has been Ms. Kowalski’s first year of coaching. She comments that it has been a delightful experience and foresees success in the future. The Fencing team, coached by Mr. Wiener, finished the season in fine form. The Epee team, led by co-captain Scott Reinartsen, won the District Three Championships. The Foil team, led by co-captain Bill Edwards, placed third in the District Three Champion- ships. The team finished with a 7-6 dual meet record and placed ninth in the State Championships. The season was highlighted by many outstanding individual performances. Scott Reinartsen was the District Three and State Individual Epee Champion and placed ninth in the Under 20 Epee Junior Olympic National Championships in Houston, Texas. Dave Boxmeyer set high standards by placing second in the Under 16 Epee Junior Olympic National Championships. Dave was also the State Sophomore Epee Champion. Bill Henry had an eighteen bout dual meet winning streak and placed fourth in the Sophomore Foil Championships. Steve Hoffman placed fourth in the Sophomore Sabre Champion- ships and Matt Lee placed fifth in the Sophomore Epee Championships. The team is still very young with six sophomores and one freshman as starting Varsity Fencers. The team lost three meets by only a few touches and generally improved throughout the season. ft ■■■■■■■■ VARSITY S. Ricker, P. Fersch, G. Witty, D. DeGraw, M. Uliss. J V. C. Lee, L. Needhammer, C. J. 07403 As editor of the 1978 Nugget, I would like to extend my extreme gratitude to the staff for all their time and hard work that they put into creating this book. I would also like to thank Mr. Capasso for taking the time to help with our photography work. Most of all I would like to express my appreciation to Ms. Rembold, our advisor, for all her help, patience and support she offered throughout the year. Along with me, the yearbook staff hopes this year’s edition of the Nugget will be reflected upon with fond memories for many years to come. Diane Murphy Editor-in-chief This year proved to be a challenge for the Nugget Staff at Butler High since each and everyone of us were “rookies” in the field of publications. Often times, it seemed a constant battle against deadline dates; scheduling clubs and activities and developing last minute photographs appeared a Herculean task and the dilemma we faced when trying to fit all our creative ideas onto that white page looked impossible. But as I “reflect” upon our year together in that closet, labeled the Nugget Office, our success is found in the fact that no matter the difficulty, the staff consistently worked together in an enthusiastic manner. Whether it was during late hours after school or a Saturday afternoon, when a “coke and hero sandwich” gave us the energy to finish that final layout; the group devoted themselves to the yearbook. A great deal was learned about ourselves and our school throughout the entire experience. It is now appropriate to extend my deepest gratitude to the people who made this yearbook possible. My warmest thanks to Diane Murphy, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, who never faltered; Mr. Frank Capasso, who was a constant source of strength and our reliable photographer; recognition is also extended to the B.H.S. Graphics Department, Delma Studios, Mr. Wolff - Progress Associates, TODAY, TRENDS, to all the faculty members for their moral support, Mr. James Smith and especially Mr. Goldberg and the Butler Board of Education. May this edition of the Nugget be enjoyed for many years. Congratulations to the Nugget Staff on a job well done and a hearty congratulations to the Class of 1978. Ms. G. Rembold Nugget Advisor SUPPLEMENT 1978 189 BAND This year the Butler Marching Band went to for the Cosmos on April 16, 1978. hey were very successful,” said Mr. Baggs, who is the director of the band. It was the best show they did this year, and also the best band the Meadowlands audience has seen this year. There was a Butler crowd of about 300 people. Next year the Cosmos would like to have them play again. Some other places that would like to have them play are the N.Y. Giants and the Cardinal Dougherty Parade of Champions which is an indoor show in Phila- delphia. Bands from all over the country compete there. Mr. Baggs said that next year’s band is going to be ’’bigger and better!” 190 GOLF (L to R] W. Johnson, K. Paisley. M. Mazurkiewicz, G. Nelson, Coach Monacelli, K. Barton, D. Morse. The golf team had a record of 4-7 overall and a record of 4-4 in the conference. They beat De Paul this year for the first time. The team finished with a .500 average. There was a turnout of 11 candidates. Compared to golfing towns like Pequannock, with 30 members and Jefferson with 38, they did considerably well. Most staff members attended, as did Mr. VanDerBas, president of the Board of Education; Mr. Wolff, the year- book’s printer; Mr. Goldberg. Mr. and Mrs. Koerner. Mr. and Mrs. Potenza. Mr. and Mrs. Sisco, and Ms. Rembold. This was the first opportunity to see the product of this year’s hard work. Gifts were exchanged, gratitude expressed, and a bit of sadness was shared by all, since this meant the end of a very happy experience that we all shared. For the first time in many years, the Home Economics Department held a fashion show. The hostesses were Mrs. Martens and Mrs. Bersano. Far left: Judy VanderLaan models pants and a coordinating blouse both made by her. The rag doll she holds was another project she made. Left: Jeanann M: hl shows that a very pretty dress can be made within a little amount of time. This blue and white print dress was a rewarding project. Above: Anne Walek models a coat she made this year. Looks hard? Not at all! The audience’s response was a positive one. Only girls attended the show. This not only helped the models develop poise and confidence, but gave the audience a very enjoyable assembly.
