Text from Pages 1 - 196 of the 1977 volume:

IN MY LIFE There are places I’ll remember all my life, though some have changed, some forever, not for better, some have gone and some remain. All these places had their moments, with lovers and friends I still can recall, some are dead and some are living, in my life I’ve loved them all. But of all these friends and lovers. There is no one compares with you, and these mem’ries lose their meaning when 1 think of love as something new. Though 1 know I’ll never lose affection for people and things that went before, I know I’ll often stop and think about them, in my life I’ll love you more. Gallarelli The Senior class held its annual magazine sales in the fall. It is the fund raising of the past year that is most significant. During this year, the seniors organized a bike rally, a skating party, and made plans for a senior class trip in the spring. The Junior class started their year by selling candy to raise their class treasury. Later in the year they made plans for the “Junior Prom’. The Sophomore class, in order to raise funds for their treasury and future activities, sold Christmas candles. The Freshman class started their year by electing their class officers early in the fall. Later in the year, they started their fund raising by selling stationery. SOPHOMORE OFFICERS D. Barrett, M. Roche, R. Cusack, S. Pielaet, M. Kirschbaum, L. Liptak. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS The council consists of English class reps., officers and senators of each class, and its own officers elected by the students. This year the student council presented four dances: the Halloween, Harvest, Winter, and Valentines’ Dances. To raise funds, they main- tained the refreshment stand at football games, sold candy bars, and sold carnations for Valentines’ Day. Representatives of the council attended the “Monmouth Convention” and “Rutger’s State Student Council Meeting”. Throughout the year, the council sponsored many activities such as: the Pep Rallys, a Hypnotist show, a “Gong Show”, and a film festival, and plans for a concert in the spring. P. Kattowski, M. Scherreik, M. Bowlby, B. An important and most enjoyed part of our school year activities, this year, involved the various dances held at Butler High School. In the fall, the Halloween dance was presented as a “dress-up” dance. Later on in the same season, the Harvest Dance was given, and the King and Queen were voted on and announced. This years Harvest Queen was Margot Bowlby and the King was Mark Miller. Also the Winter Dance was presented as a couples only dance. The Student Council sponsored all of these dances, all of which were very enjoyable and successful. During the month of Feb- ruary, a Valentine’s Dance was given in honor of the special day of the year. The band that performed was “Star”. This is the same band that will be playing at the Junior-Senior Prom this May. This year the girls of Butler High took part in a Football game against Kinnelon. In preparing for the big game, the Senior girls and the Junior girls played each other to decide which class would play against Kinnelon. In the preliminary game, the Senior girls won by hard practice and the cheering on of the cheerleading boys of each class. Unfortunately, the Senior girls were defeated playing the Kinnelon girls. But as the saying goes “It’s only a game”, and the girls and boys alike had a good time. When Football Season comes each fall, everyone gets into the mood. Even our teachers go crazy at the Pep Rallies. This year the teachers participated in three of the pep rallies that were held in the gym at Butler High. In the first pep rally, the men teachers dressed up as Cheerleaders and led all the classes in cheers and did stunts. The women teachers were the football play- ers in the second rally and went through a series of intricate warm-up exercises and passes. Our own Vice-Principal was Santa Claus and some teachers were his helpers. Together they presented the team with trick presents and a humorous poem composed by Mr. Harris and Mr. Goldberg themselves. “FRIENDS” I hope the day will be a lighter highway, for friends are found on every road; Can you ever think of any better way For the lost and weary travellers to go? Making friends for the world to see. Let the people know you’ve got what you need; With a friend at hand you will see the light. If your friends are there, then everything’s all right. It seems to me a crime that we should age. These fragile times should never slip by us; A time you never can or shall erase As friends together watch their childhood fly. (B. Taupin) In 1963 a junior historical society was created in Butler High School, at a time when the state was preparing to celebrate its 300th birthday. This group of students was interested in state and local history. In fact, many of the students had already made projects for the His- tory Fair on subjects of local interest - houses, industrial sites, progress, etc. in Butler, Riverdale, Kinnelon, etc. Essentially they were interested in their communities, and wanted to do research on their areas. In 1977, this year, the principles and essen- tials of the History Fair still remain. Many interesting and knowledgeable projects were presented this year in its annual showing_ The grand opening of the Butler High School store, “Paraphernalia Emporium”, occurred on February 3rd of this year. The Students of the class are involved in the displays and dis- tribution of merchandise on sale in the store. The store is part of the Sales class, which is involved in a “distributive education” pro- gram. The goals of the distributive education program is to offer instruction in marketing, distri- bution, and to aid in improving the techniques of distribution, and to develop an understanding of the wide range of social and economic responsibilities which accompany the right to engage in distribution in a competitive society. CONCERT BAND We the Editors and staff of the 1977 Nugget would like to conclude in a poem, which makes us realize yesterday was a passageway guiding us into our individual features: Conclusion .. .For I shall grow. My eyes will know. Far into changes I must go. To which in time I wasted once before. Not knowing that my age was minor to my Futuristic convictions. L. .Only such a passive small as this Can beai he brunttof things to come; For as the days feejjl time’s command, I thank all those within whose Arms I learnt to live and love Their life for ever and ever Until the end of time. J. 07403 187 This year I was very fortunate in finding the ideal person to fill the high position of EDITOR IN CHIEF. How I will replace her is still a mystery to me, but for this year Stephanie Doerner has been a yearbook advisor’s “dream come true.” Above everything else she has devoted herself to this yearbook wholeheartedly and with no considerations to her own personal time. Stephanie and the staff have put into the 1977 Nugget what 1 consider a beautiful tribute to life at Butler High School. Stephanie also had the ability to delegate and give directions to her staff. Jody Marion deserves to be commended for her literary talents and the endless tasks she selflessly performed. The layout editors and art editors were Laura Whaelan, Lisa Card, and Brian Decker. Their talents are also outstanding and their hours of dedication are also appreciated. Last but not least a yearbook’s success depends on its photographs; Mr. Capasso, Delma Studios, Mike Bedford, and Ruthanne Burns please accept my warmest thanks. I wish great happiness and success to the staff and congratulations on an outstanding publication. people who helped our staff throughout the year. Because of their help the yearbook ran smoothly and we never had any I would like to extend a personal thanks to my staff and the year. Last but not least, I would like to thank Mrs. uituin, our advisor, for helping us bear with us the whole year In my eyes this yearbook is outstanding and I hope the rest of my schoolmates find as much pleasure looking at it as we had making it. . Mrs. Gabrielle Giblin Nugget Advisor As editor of the yearbook, 1 would like to thank the many problems. typists for excellent ideas and speedy work to meet deadlines, also to Mr. Capasso for fine photography work ut Stephanie Doern Editor-in-chief FOREVER YOUNG May God bless and keep you always May your wishes all come true May you always do for others and let others do for you May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung And may you stay FOREVER YOUNG May you grow up to be righteous May you grow up to be true May you always know the truth and see the light surrounding you May you always be courageous, stand upright and be strong And may you stay FOREVER YOUNG May yotir hands always be busy May your feet always be swift May you have a strong foundation when the wind changes shift May your heart always be joyful May your song always be sung And may you stay FOREVER YOUNG.
