Besides performing in front of adult audiences, the Drama Club entertains children in elementary as well as nursery schools. 53 Salute to the Colors The Color Guard gets set for their half-time performance. 54 (Right) Marching before the home crowd, the Guard leads the band. To the Polls. Students from history classes had the opportunity, this year, to work in But- ler’s and Bloomingdale’s Democratic and Republican Headquarters. They met many local incumbents and made numerous phone calls in search of votes for their candidates. In some cases, where the local organization did not support the national candidate, stu- dents worked at county headquarters and elsewhere. Gary O’Neill (top left) Nancy Snure (above), and Dave McCarthy (left) all worked hard for their candidates. 56 f' t- John Bunker and Patti Walek worked for local McGovern for President Hdqtrs. in Bloomingdales because local party lead- ers did not support the presidential candidate. Angela Quigley and Vicki Wright put in many rewarding hours at local headquarter; in Butler. 57 Nurses Aides: always ready to help. Mr. Taras and the AVA crew keep the movies rolling. The Stage Crew isn’t only well manned . . . it is well womaned too. 58 Library Aides: “I thought everyone knew that book could be found under 445.1.” Attendance Aides: “Mr. Harris would like to see you. Where were you 2nd period?” Guidance Aides: Run, run, run. JC- The Drill Team is quite busy this year, participating in the Ft. Lee exhibition, Weehawken competition, the Interna- tional Baton Twirling Association Scholastic Competition, and the Morris County Competition where they won first place. 60 The Drill Team’s new flags were an added attraction as they performed their various formations during football and basketball games. Forward March! Last year Laura Russin and Valerie Leo- Grande attended summer camp to improve their drill techniques. The girls made numerous stuffed animals to sell for Christmas gifts and it is hoped that the money raised will help send more girls to camp this summer. 61 Get Together, Move! The Cheerleaders urge the Bulldogs onto another winning season. Michele Barber yells for Butler. (Left) Marcia, Debbie, Gail, and the “Butler Bulldog.’ Excited during the game. 63 Das Oktoberfest Toma Greensway and dad In November, an Oktoberfest was held at the school for German students and their parents. The German Club was organized to bring festive activities to German students. In the spring, the club has planned to dine at a German restaurant. 64 For Homework Tonight . . . Future Teachers of America sponsors a tutoring pro- gram for the elementary school children. The students who participate in this program receive High School credits for their service. Clean Air, Clean Water The Ecology Club is active in collecting glass and newspapers from the students and community and pre- paring it for recycling. A diversified program was set up at the School year’s beginning with ecology films from the county library, important speakers in the fields of conservation and pollution control, keeping a scrapbook of related information, the testing of local water supplies, long- range beautification of Butler High School, and co- operation with nearby schools on related projects. The Friday Night Show Students involved in the TV Club learn the technique involved in producing a television show, i.e., operating th various cameras and sound equipment. Butler High School produces a weekly television show seei on Friday nights at 7:00 on Channel 3, cable TV. The; inform the viewers as to what is happening within th school and town. Good As Gold will, as of June, have com- pleted its third year as an accomplished cho- ral group at Butler High School. Along with the contemporary music that they sing, they also render songs from the 40’s and 50’s. A late Winter and Spring concert are plan- ned for this year. Good as Gold 66 Christmas and Spring concerts are led by our illustrious Mr. Hall. 67 Fund raising. Toy drive, and Picnic The Key Club is a club for High School males serving the commu- nity. It is sponsored by the local Kiwanis dub of Pompton Lakes. The yearly events scheduled for the Key Club are a Halloween party for elementary school chil- dren, a toy drive for underprivi- leged children, fund raising drives for Muscular Dystrophy and Cere- bral Palsey, and a senior citizens’ picnic. Extra! Extra! The members of the Newspaper Service are a group of responsible students who dedicate their time, in the mornings, to ordering newspapers and organizing their distribution to homerooms. All profits go to Literary Village, India, maintained by World Edu- cation, to help teach the people of India to read and write. 68 Junior Historians The Butler Jerseymen are associ- ated with the New Jersey Histori- cal Society and participate in the activities of the state organiza- tion as well as on the local level. The kinds of activities they have include a transportation outing to Flemington; Regional Confer- ences, one of which was held at Butler which included election speakers, a mock election, and dedication of an historic marker for Van Saun House. President Carole Fogg discusses with the Jerseymen the plans for the Crafts Mart and the Winter Outing at High Point. This years officers: Kathy Beasley, Terry Biemer, Ed Bird, Shari Huff- man, Carole Fogg, and Ned Osborn discuss their History Fair project. Carol's Gang Under the leadership of Carol Romeo, the squad anticipates a successful season. 71 I The Student Council held its elections in early June. Rita Grasso, Sally Tintle, Wendy Larry, and Randi Ricker were elected to lead Student Council. In early September one representative was elected from each English class to make up the remainder of the Council. The fund raising committee was responsible for the production of the football programs to be sold at all home football games. i 72 Butler High School Student Government The Student Council has also run several assemblies in the surrounding ele- mentary schools to introduce their Student Councils to the organization and procedures of Butler High School’s Council. A major fund raiser was running the football refreshment stand during all home games. The Council held several dances this year, such as the Harvest Ball and the Christmas Dance and sold Tootsie Rolls to raise needed funds. 73 The Bulldog Band participates in their first half-time show. The rou- tine, to be used at Mennen, could not be used because of the cancella- tion of the competition. The Band this spring will be marching in the annual local Memorial Day parade. 74 Tuning up for the Sparta half-time show. (Right) Bill Fogg . . . “Come blow your horn.' Success at Clifton “We’ll sing the Butler war song. Drum Major Jerry Scognamiglio brings the band to a halt at the Pequannock game. UNICEF Fund Drive Gets Interact Off the Ground Interact is a service organization connected with the Rotary Club. This is a new club in its first year. Interact participates in such activities as the exchange program, helping the senior citizens, and various other projects within the town. Early this year the group sponsored an assembly and dance to raise funds for UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund. Imagination, Creativity, and Artistic Ability The Art Club meets one day a week after school. The key to its success is letting the students work in their own media. The Art Club showed its individual and combined talents this year by decorat- ing the school bulletin boards and con- tributing displays to the Art Show. 76 Dave + Michele + After several years of not participating in any competition, the 1972 Nugget was entered into the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Compe- tition. The book earned a second place rating. Almost all ’73 editors attended.the C.S.P.A. work- shops in New York and hopefully gained valuable knowledge which should be evident in this book. “Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice Couldn't Have Done a Better Job Carol + Irene + 77 Gary + Gary + Jon + Since then, work has been steadily underway to improve last year’s rating. Carol, Kathy, Theresa, and Irene have attended a Taylor sponsored work- shop in Atlantic City in order to improve their layout and editorial skills. Carol and Theresa also attended a photography workshop over the sum- mer to help bolster what originally appeared to be a non-existent photogra- phy staff. Fortunately, both Gary Dow and Gary Hazekamp were found early in September and both have contributed actively in meeting urgently demanded pic- ture requests. Linda + . Nancy + Glancing through the pages of the ’73 Nugget, the increased use of color should be obvious. Because of a very successful booster campaign — opened this year for the first time to juniors — sufficient funds were raised to allow for this expansion in color use. Prizes were awarded for the greatest number of boosters sold. Three lucky drawings were also made. Laura Russin received a $50 bond, Steve War won a $25 bond and JoAnn Harriot won $10 in cash. Ida Gould also won $10 for selling the most boosters. 78 which proves that you'll never find us lying down on the job. 79 ART CLUB Advisor — Miss Sharon Van Orden Pat Airey Janet Alyen Alan Breitenbach John Di Giacomo Debbie Fisher Kris Hendricks Lee Hulbers Betty Jones Karen Kochka Nancy Merish John Papesca Jeff Ryersen ATTENDANCE OFFICE RUNNERS Donna Barry Gibby Bochnig Betsy Cairns Sharon Carabello Terri Di Nallo Kevin Dodds Karen Faulkner Ida Gould Jo Ann Harriot Leslie Howell Dana Jaretsky Cheryl Jobes Kathy Johnson Joan Kautz Jean Kuser Allison Langbien Pat Mielke Robyn Miller Diane Paisley Valerie Past Kathy Rafferty Jean Rizzuto Terri Robbins Pat Susko Cheryl Wall AVA Advisor — Mr. John Taras Brian Appel Bob Chirardio Jim Davis Jim Gordon Ken Hand Mel Luke Russ Mathews Ford Robbins Jim Roberts Mike Rosa Irving Soules Jeffery Sty macks Ken Vanderhoff Chris Van Hine AI Wutsch BAND Director — Mr. Joseph Lawlor Lori Adams Jayne Anderson Dave Bandel Kim Barrett Keith Barton Dave Bowman Mike Bufano Irene Clarke Gail Clave Pete Clave Tony Colonna Hal Dunkirk Mark Ebersole Paul Ebersole Bob Ever Mike Fanella Jill Fatzler Mark Fatzler Todd Farrand Activities Directory Linda Fletcher Bill Fogg Lynne Gallarelli Pat Gallarelli Sue Gardner Toma Greensway Donna Gripenburg Bob Hopper Lois Houst Shari Huffman Fred Janicke Kathy Judge Karen Kocnka Linda Kochka Jeanne Lampe Jeff La Sala Muriel Lozito Jack Maas Lori Maas Sue Marion Laura McFeeley Dan Monti Rod Motz Dave Muller Phil Murdie Kim Ommerman Ann Oskie JoAnn Oskie Nancy Payne Pat Ponomarev Sue Rambach Karen Rochacewicz Donna Rodda Brett Sabio Guy Scognamiglio Gerry Scognamiglio Brian Shipley Himanchu Snukla John Sinibaldi Kathy Smith Bob Spellmon Bob Stearns Barry Stephens Lynn Tancott Jules Thiessen Linda Tideman Pat Vandenbos Joanne Verdonik Fred Wade Candy Walker Carev Wehrer CHEERLEADERS Advisor — Miss Genie Grower Captain — Randy Ricker Co-Captain — Gail Kuser Michele Barker Rita Grasso Debbie Gray Marcia Kahn Marie Lenthe Debbie Lipinski Kate Meier Renee Rafferty J.V.
