Some of our daddies work in factories some of them stand on line. Some of our daddies buy us marbles some of them just buy wine. But at night you can’t tell Sunday suits from tattered overalls. But then we’re only children, children one and all. Some of us take our lunch in boxes some in paper sacks. Some of us kids join in the laughter, some hear it at our backs. Some of our mothers sew fine linen some can’t sew a stitch Some of our mothers dress up poorly and some of them dress up rich But at night you can’t tell party dresses from hand-me-downs too small But then we’re only children, children one and all. Some of us learn our lessons poorly some of us learn them well. Some of us find an earthly heaven some of us live in hell. Some of us go right on a preachen without making too much sense Some of us hide behind a wall and some behind a fence But at night you can’t tell picket fences from bricks a tower tall. But then we're only children, children one and all. Some of us grow up tall and handsome some of us grow up plain. Some of us own the world in ransom and some of us just hear our name. Some of our people die in misery am some of them die in peace. Some of our people die for nothing but dying doesn't cease. And at night you can’t tell fancy coffins from boxes in the hall But then we're only children, children one and all children.” 31 Seniors — Class of ’72 Richard Aldrich Glenn Anthony Lynn Andersen Betty Jean Anderson Ken Appel Lenny Araneo Santos Arroyo Helen Babcock Don Bailey 32 Steven Jeffery Balinski Karen Baum CLASS OFFICERS: Secretary Linda Chiuchiuolo, President Barbara Guenter, Treasurer Margie Piazza, and Vice-President Mike Schiumo. Revolving around this theme, divider pages were decided upon and pictures scheduled. Hectic hours were spent discussing plans with the publisher and meeting those deadlines which always seemed just ahead. Color was used for the first time in several years in the ’72 book and once again a supplement will be pro- vided featuring, among other events, the prom and graduation. The hours have been long; the headaches, many; and the rewards are up to you. Mrs. Pine, Mr. Potenza and Mr. Sisco, the editorial and business advi- sors, and the editors and staff of this year’s Nugget hope you are as pleased with their efforts as they are. Sears visits Butler High V5r o_cx.- JL v Senator Harry L. Sears visited Butler High School on Feb. 14, 1972, to inspect the occupational education areas which include Industrial Arts and Vocation programs. Mr. Sears was a member of the Class of 1937, and the purpose of his visit was to give a testimonial as to how these programs have changed since he attended Butler. The tour was also an attempt to compare the vocational areas at Butler to other schools in the state. Mr. Sears was escorted through the halls by Mr. Becker, Mr. Goldberg, Mrs. Pat O'Hara of the State Board of Educa- tion, Mr. Peter Doran, who directs vocational education for Morris County, and Mr. Charles Ebcrs of the Butler Board. Senator Sears re- marked that the change in Butler High is fantastic and is quoted as saying that it can match up with any high school in the state. oGl H - - - oU -« Services Newspaper Service Library Service One seldom stops and takes notice of all the vital services which help the school to run efficiently. The various services are a great help to numerous aspects of school life. Even before homeroom begins the Newspaper Service is collecting and delivering N. Y. Times to fellow students and teachers. If an assembly is scheduled, the Stage Crew is on hand to set up the stage and regulate the lights. In the Attendance, Guidance, and High School Offices, students are willing to give up their spare time and lend a helping hand by answering the phone, filling out cards, delivering passes, and running errands. Students interested in the medical field can be found working in the Nurse's Office. In the library, members of the Library Service are kept busy by checking passes and help- ing students find information. Members of A.V.A. can be seen throughout the school delivering films and other equipment to classrooms where they will be needed. The at- tractive art work in the form of posters and displays which decorate the school illus- trates the efforts of the Art Service. Those who take part in any one of these services will discover the rewards of helping others and doing a job well. 108 Attendance Runners VARSITY CHEERLEADERS: Kneeling (Left to Right): Gail Kuser, Sue Snure, Vicky Baumann. Saturday football games would not be the same without the cheerleaders who did a great job of spreading spirit and enthusiasm throughout the crowd. Pep rallies were a great success due largely to the cheerleaders’ effort. Who can forget those ar- tistic signs which sparked Butler to a great season? As football season came to a close, the cheerleaders continued to support all our basketball games. The girls will agree that a lot of hard work and practicing are a necessary part of cheering. Along with the work a lot of fun and memories were shared by Miss Giles and the squad. This year for the first time the J.V. squad will participate in a competition spon- sored by the Pequannock Boosters. Cheerleaders J.V. The squad consists of eight Varsity twirlers and two J.V. members, led by Captain Fran Soules and Co-captain Diane Iandolo. The twirlers could be seen entertaining audi- ences at all football games and at basketball half- times. Their plans include entering competition. Placing second at Ramsey last year, the twirlers are aiming for a gold medal this year. In the spring the twirlers continue to keep busy by marching in numerous parades. Included are the Memorial Day Parade and the Little League Parade which bring the squad to the close of a diligent and rewarding season. h,.Jk . A 7 V Drill Team The Drill Team is an active group of twenty girls. They participate in football and basketball games where their well executed routines com- bine marching and flag twirling. This year new flags were purchased contributing to sharper and more varied routines. New uniforms were made by the girls for basketball season. Mrs. Hoefling- er. Captain Pat Kinney, and Co-captain Sandy Carabe)lo provide direction for the group. The Drill Team was present at the annual Clifton Band Festival and a competition held in Pompton Lakes with the band this fall. The girls enjoyed the competition and plan to enter more later in the year. Marching in parades keeps the Drill Team active in the spring. The entire group worked very hard this year but they will agree it was well worth the effort. DRILL TEAM MEMBERS: Kneeling (Left to Right): Captain Pat Kinney. Marsha Struble, Martha Singer. Pat Mielke, Valerie LeoGrande. Standing: Carol Housewirth, Laurie Liptak. Sandy Carabello, Co-Captain; Laura Russin, Sharon Russo, and Kathy MacArthur. The Bulldog Band is one of the most active groups at Butler. Under the direction of Mr. Lawloe, Mr. Hall and Drum Majorette Fran Soules, the Band’s busy schedule began in Sep- tember with football season. Many hours were spent practicing music and marching forma- tions for football games, where routines exhibited the Band’s talent and originality. Later in the fall, the Band participated in the Clifton Band Festival in which it served as host. A pa- rade at Upsala College and competition were also included in the Band’s activities. The spring promised many other engagements for the Band, including the Spring Concert and the Memorial Day Parade. The Band experienced a fulfilling year, with memories which will remain long after the year’s end. Butler M “i Bulldog Band Color Guard This year the Color Guard increased its squad by two members. One of the largest in the area, the B.H.S. Color Guard is composed of fifteen girls. Drama Club Butler High School’s Drama Club performs plays and skits throughout the year during class for their own benefit and enjoyment. This helps to acquaint them with the artful use of music, staging, costumes, make-up, etc., in drama. The club is directed by Mr. Sippie who does an exceptional job. They present one major production each year to the public along with a series of children’s plays presented to grammar school children. 21 Student Council The governing body of Butler High School Council President Dave Seik, Vice President Gloria Ebers, Secretary Pam Matthews, and Treasurer Barbara LaLuna. The Student Council of Butler is the governing body which represents all the students and is elected by them. The main objective of Council is to promote a feeling of unity and re- spect for our school. The Student Council has many responsi- bilities ranging from supervising school elections to pre- senting most assemblies. They also sponsor dances. Council strives to meet the students’ wishes and the wishes of the Ad- ministration — a difficult job. This year a number of changes were instituted. Homeroom representatives were abolished and replaced by English Reps. This enables more students to express their views in an English class period than in a short homeroom period. Each year calls for changes and Student Council is prepared to meet those changes. Film Club Although this is only the second year of their exist- ence, the film club has done much in the way of activi- ties. This group of highly motivated students holds its main interest in film making. The highlight of their ac- tivities was their first film festival which featured the classic All Quiet on the Western Front. The money made from this festival was used to buy a large screen for the gym. Small film festivals are among the activities of this interesting group of students. Mr. Sippie is the advisor. Film Club Members include: Sharon Lenhart, Al Gil- bert, Jeff Warner, Scott Kremer, Chris Kochka, and Bob Sch'erreik. Spanish Club The Spanish Club’s activities enabled its members to learn about the customs and celebrations of the Spanish people. This club is open to all students of the Spanish language and is advised by Mr. Ontl. Members of the club pictured at right are In the Back Row: Angela Schiumo, Maryan ne Maggio, Renee Presutti, Nancy Monroe, and Paula Belmonte. Sealed in Front Are: Laila Nilsen and Deb Ricker. 124 Home Economics Club The Home Economics Club, consisting of sixty girls, all but doubled in size this year. The major activity was the Christmas Fair at which the club sold key chains, candles, crocheted vests and hats, macrame belts, and wall plaques, all hand made by its members. The proceeds earned will be used to finance a trip for the entire club and a party for nursing and children’s homes. The fair provided practical expe- rience in learning how to construct the various articles sold and lots of fun in the process. Mrs. Houser and Miss McDermott advised the group and this year’s offi- cers were: President — Nancy Brooks; Vice Pres. — Maryanne Struble; Treasurer — Lynn Treweeke; Secretary — Angela Schiumo. Choirs 6-B Choir The choir, under the new direction of Mr. Hall, has switched to a more contemporary style and plans to per- form selections from Jesus Christ: Superstar. Another innovation was the installation of a rotating practice sched- ule which provides one full period for practice every week in addition to the regular one-half period every day. The choir participated in the Operatic Musical and combined their talent with the concert band during the Christmas Program, Spring Concert and Commencement Exercises. 5-A Choir 126 Jerseymen The Jerseymen once again experienced a prof- itable year. This group of students, who are actu- ally junior historians, are affiliated with the New Jersey Historical Society. With the help of their advisor Miss Athay, the Jerseymen are involved in a number of projects. They did much in the way of service to the school and town. Among the many activities of the year was the preservation and display of the school clock de- stroyed in the 1963 fire. In an effort to raise money to waterproof it, a cake sale was held and the group raked leaves. Two films were worked on during the year. One film shows the past and present of Bloomingdale, while the other demon- strates third graders’ view of Butler. Other proj- ects include maintaining the school garden; histo- ry fairs, local and state; participating in state pro- grams; a preservation conference; and a transpor- tation outing. The officers this year were: President — Glo- ria Ebers; Vice President — Regina Clarke; Trea- surer — Glen Hazekamp; Corresponding Secre- tary — Theresa Biemer; Recording Secretary — Shari Huffman; and Historian — Rory Lovelace. Bowling Club The Girls’ Bowling Club is a non- competitive organization open to all girls who enjoy bowling. The group meets once a week at the Butler Bow l where the girls learn bowling skills and techniques with the help of their advisor, Mrs. Hoeflinger. Pictured to the right are: Kneel- ing: Michele Harris, Paula Shepard, Nancy VanWinkle, Karen Jobes, Martha Dry, Carol Brown, Jane Yanis, Nancy Gunther, and Karen Toto. Ski Racers Mr. Sansevere advises this group of students who enjoy racing as a sport. The group skis slalom and giant slalom and works out at Great Gorge. They race once a week and will have participated in six meets this year. The club races against other schools in the Skyline Conference and has a good chance of placing third or fourth. German Club The purpose of the Ger- man Club is to acquaint stu- dents with the customs and holidays of Old Germany, thereby giving them insight into the German culture. Students experienced vari- ous German foods and music during such holidays as the Weihnacktsfest held in December and the Fes- tessen held in the spring. Mrs. Whitmore is the club’s advisor and the officers are Joan Shuhnicki, President; Carol Housewirth, Vice President; Michele Harris, Secretary’; and Kathy Brem- er, Treasurer. F.T.A. The F.T.A. is oriented to the vari- ous techniques of the teaching pro- fession and attracts students who are interested in teaching as a career. The club provides insight into the field of education by offering trips to various colleges and by sponsoring tutoring programs in the elementary schools. The F.T.A. also provides aid for the teachers in school and offers a luncheon for them in the spring. Mr. Lorenzo is the club’s advisor. This year’s president was Pat Bur- roughs, while other offices were held by Regina Clarke and Glenn Haze- kamp. Pictured at right are Sue Gardner, Pat Burroughs, Glenn Hazekamp, Doug Stiles, Irene Clarke, Laura McFeeley, and Regina Clarke. 129 ’ 7« ti. Sports When things go wrong as they sometimes will. When the road you travel seems all up hill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit Rest if you must but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns, As every one of us sometimes learns; And many a fellow turns about. When he might have won had he stuck it out Don't give up though the pace seems slow — You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the victor's cup; And he learned too late when the night came down, How close he came to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out — The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are, It may be near when it seems afar; So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit — It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit. 131 Football Skyline Conference Co-Champions 8-1 Front Row: J. Other members of the team were seniors Steve Cullen and Bill McCall, and juniors Dennis Gunn, Steve McCarthy and Jim Paulison. Other participants this year were Alan Howell, George Scott, Drake Carpenter, Jerry Scognamiglio, Cliff Baker, Gary O’Neil, and Jeff Marion. The Girls' Gymnastics Team opened its second season on an optimistic note, having lost only two seniors from last year's unbeaten squad. The addition of a J.V. team should help to strengthen Butler in the future. Be- sides dual and open meet competition, the team also put on demonstrations for various local schools and organi- zations. The season culminates with the annual gym show in April. The success of the team can be attributed to its overall depth. This is demonstrated by the number of first, second, and third places accumulated throughout the dual meet season. One of the highlights of the year was Butler’s 65.13 to 57.15 win over previously unbeaten John P. Stevens High School of Edison. The team took three firsts and two seconds in this meet. The team tied for first place in Conference and reached the semi-finals in the state tournament, losing to defending champs Wayne Valley. The overall record was 16-5, with a 7-1 conference record. High scorers were Wendy Larry with 241 points, Pat Marion with 202 and Dora Daven- port with 150. These girls were equally productive in rebounding.
