This is the Business Publications Staff. Mr. Potenza— advisor, Marion Murphy—editor. Carol Lenthe, Lynne Cross—co-editor of Senior section and activities, and Barb Herland also co-editor. 102 Gail Van Orden — Faculty editor, Cathy Junta — Literary editor. Ginny Shannon and Lois Reichard — Art editors Regina Clarke — Underclassmen editor Under the advice of Mrs. Pine, the NUGGET succeeded through another year of deadlines. Vinnie Paolini, our Editor-in-Chief, has been found in various positions dur- ing the course of the year, tearing his hair, gritting his teeth, knocking his head, but when March arrived Vinnie and the yearbook made it through another nerve rack- ing year. Taking pictures was no easy job. After securing the film from the High School Office, the camera from the locked cabinet in the Art room, the photographer from the deepest recesses of the photo lab and the wrath of many faculty and administration members, the pictures were taken,of course, frequently the camera was not loaded with the right film; when it was loaded, it was more often than not loaded incorrectly; but somehow we managed to muddle through. And so we present the 1971 NUGGET. We feel it is well worth our labors. We hope you do too. 103 Bulldog Band Jack Tideman — Drum Major. 104 The Butler Bulldog Marching Band was off to a great start this year, under the direc- tion of Mr. Lawlor, Mr. Hall and Jack Tide- man, Drum Major. The Band spent plenty of valuable time preparing for the Annual Clif- ton Band Festival. The Band also traveled to the Mennen Band Festival in Morristown, and to a hospital in Montclair to entertain at Christmas. The Band surely had a busy schedule, but managed to fit in two concerts and many other activities. A lot of hard work and fun definitely helped to make this year great as far as the Band is concerned. 105 Ginny Shannon, Wayne Russin, Bruce Ballard, Michele Dupey, Kathy Post, Barbara Gould, Bar- bara Zipperlein. Honor Society Jackie Burney, Tom Biemer, Dave Dilzer, Karen Card, Kathy DeBonte, Vic Usinowicz, Chris Scheibener, Rich Rinck, and Pat Dore. Alice Grennon, Jim Bowlby, Carol Lenthe, Terri Johnson. Bob Buckley, Jim Meade, Jack Adalist, Steve Marino, Fred Ebers. Vincent Paolini, Dennis Florance, Irene Soules, Fred Rochace- wicz, Celia Perez, Anita Wilson, and Joanne Santoro. The greatest honor and recognition a stu- dent at Butler High School can receive is being selected for membership in National Honor Society. Students are chosen for this honor on the basis of their scholarship, leadership, character and service, that they have demonstrated in the school. This year's Honor Society has rendered service to the school and has sponsored many fund raising activities to secure pro- ceeds for scholarships. Car washes, leaf raking and film festivals are only a few of the projects that the group has become in- volved in and in which participating mem- bers have greatly enjoyed themselves. 106 Home Economics Club The Home Economics Club is composed of Freshmen and Sophomore girls who are in- terested in different sewing and cooking pro- jects. Also, this year a coed club was formed which boys were invited to attend. The first project this year was a cake sale, to raise money for the year's activities. At Christmas time, finger puppets and Christmas cookies were made to send to under priv- ileged orphans in Wayne. The Home Economics Club also helps to serve and clean up after the various dinners held in school throughout the year. Officers were elected in the fall. They are: President Laura Buckley, Secretary Eileen Cleary, and Treasurer Peggi Guenter. 107 Cheerleaders Varsity squad When you put nine girls together who are very capable of making themselves heard you have a great way of spreading spirit and enthusiasm for any athletic event and this years varsity squad did just that. Autumn Saturdays saw the varsity squad cheering at football games. The cheerleaders spent many hours preparing for games, pep rallies and displaying their artistic ability with all their sign making. Basketball games and wrestling matches were also supported with great enthusiasm. But aside from par- ticipation in these events, Miss Giles and the girls shared many memorable experiences that will long be remembered. The squad members include: Captain Pami Crean, Co-Captain Carol Lenthe, Terri John- son, Barbara Watcher, Barbara Guenter, Linda Chiuchiolo, Marianne Nolan, Sue Marion, Sue Snure. J.V. Squad includes: Captain Randy Ricker, Rita Grasso, Marie Lenthe, Michele Barber, Marsha Kahn, Gail Kyser, Debbie Grey and Cathy Mier. 108 109 Junior Varsity Cheerleaders 110 Drill Squad The Drill Team has completed their second year as an organization at Butler High School. They have performed in the Mennen Festival in which they performed original flag routines. Their marching season begins with football, goes through basketball and finally ends with marching in local parades. The members of the 1970-71 Drill Team were as follows: Captain Pat Kinney, Co-Captain Sandie Carabello, Maria Jean Schulster, Bet- ty Jean Anderson, Cheryl De Haven, Cindy Kell, Wendy Larry, Kathy Me Arthur, Sheila Murphy, Sylvia Osar, Laura Russin, Bev Spring, Sue Strassburger, Anita Mohl, Kathy Bremer. Color Guard Marching season didn't end with Football season this year, but continued on throughout the year with parades and competitions. We went to the traditional Clifton and Mennen Festivals, but this year we went into Color Guard Competition for the first time, in Parsippany-Troy Hills in March. Football season — Brand new, fabulous, great, plaid uniforms. Routines — Wonderful! Guns tried harder and more precision drills were both successful and enjoyed by all. Squad used brand new forma- tions for variety which were sharp and original. The squad worked hard to accomplish and achieve a better and snappier looking squad in which there was a lot of fun and great times. The squad includes Varsity members: Donna Larry — Captain, Chris Scheibener — Co-Captain; Anita Wilson, Janine Pierce, Margie Piazza, Karen Konig, Cathy Junta, Kathy DeBonte, Pam Matthews, Donna Current and the Junior Varsity squad: Noreen Barry, Debbie Hambor and Pat Marion. 112 As usual the twirlers did not waste any time this year. Right after try- outs in May the new squad prac- ticed through the summer months for the football season. Also during football season the squad partici- pated in the Clifton Band Festival and the Mennen Band Festival. Then the high stepping majorettes marched off on to the basketball season. This year the girls twirled at Lakeland, Pequannock, Sparta, Jefferson, and Kinnelon. Then came the big event they had all been waiting for which was the Ramsey Twirling Competition. After the competition came marching season, then tryouts again and on to an- other happy and successful year. Twirlers CO ScOKpCLTfcS Apiortor is s 5is sistsvsn Language and Culture Club Designed to give students a glimpse of the role language plays in civilization, the Lan- guage and Culture Club emphasizes the similarities between language families, the basic structure of language, and the varied use of alphabets. The popular and folk music of several nations will be examined and language-related field trips will supple- ment our studies. The officers of the club this year were: President, Jackie Burney; Vice President, Jeff LaSala; Secretary, Michele Dupey; Treasurer, Celia Perez. With twenty members belonging to a nation wide organization, the German Club experienced the pleasures and customs of old Germany. The Weihnachtsfest (Christ- mas Party), Fasching (Festival Time) and other celebrations were held and enjoyed by all with lasting memories of happiness that will be remembered by many. German Club 114 Radio Club Before the bell even rings for school to begin, the newspaper ser- vice people are busy delivering papers to the homeroom represen- tatives. The bell rings and the radio club members are on the air report- ing the coming events of the day. The unfortunate students that missed the announcements are being aided by the attendance runners, writing out well received late cards. Mean- while the guidance runners are rac- ing through to homerooms, giving out free passes to get out of class. By the time first period begins the nurse finds herself greatly relieved to have student aides help pass out thermometers. On their way to the Nurse's office, often one observes attractive art work and displays which illustrate the efforts of the art service. Library people are help- ing by putting away books and checking passes. With all this ser- vice, aides leave their mark on al- most every aspect of the school. 115 Newspaper Service Senior class officers: Treasurer Terri Johnson, President Jim Meade, Secretary Carol Lenthe (Vice President Walt Struble missing). The Future Teachers of America, a branch of the National Organization, plays an im- portant part in the lives of Butler's future teachers. Under the direction of Mr. Lorenzo the club visited colleges and sponsored guest speakers in an effort to involve and encour- age students in the profession of teaching. The club provides a general background in preparation for the training that one must receive to become a teacher. This year's activities included the teacher's aid tutoring program, and the making and delivering of stockings to a children's home. Key Club The Key Club is a newly founded club at Butler this year. It has 16 members ranging from Sophomores to Seniors. The Club is ad- vised by Mr. Di Pasquale and Mr. Koerner. The Key Club is actually a junior Kiwanis Club run much on the same scale as the Kiwanis Club itself. The purpose of the Key Club is to serve the community and the school through var- ious service projects, which include the groundwork for an ice-skating rink on the practice football field and the Senior Social held in December, where the previous year's Seniors were able to meet with the students who are presently Seniors. Also the Club held a very successful fund drive by selling fruit cakes. Although limited in size and funds the Key Club envisions a very successful future. The officers of the club this year were: President Bud Usinowicz, Vice President Scott Herland, Secretary Jay Hulbert and Trea- surer Mike Rochacewicz. 117 Student Council officers: Lynne Cross — Treasurer, Kathy Post — President, Barb Herland — Secretary (Doreen Hilsinger — Vice President missing). 118 Student Council Our fearless advisor Mr. Malzone. The Student Council of Butler High School is a governing body elected by the students to represent them and their ideas. The Council has been working with the administra- tion trying to solve problems and presenting new ideas and changes. The main objective of the Student Council is to spread the feeling of unity and school spirit to the stu- dents. The Council is active in all phases of school life, from dances and assemblies, to elections and fund raising activities. With such a strong responsibility, council has met its obligations efficiently and effectively. 119 Drama Club This year the Drama Club all but doubled in size. Under the direction of Mr. Sippie the club presented three children's plays, Little Red Riding Hood, The Christmas Party, and The Reluctant Dragon, all for the Wonderland Nursery School and for the Aaron Decker School at Christmas. The cast enjoyed pre- senting these plays just as much as the kids loved seeing them. During the year, each class was busy gathering together plays, getting into groups and working to bring the plays to life. They presented these plays to their classmates, withstanding the criti- cisms and shining with the praises. The club didn't only use the stage, but they spent much of their time learning about modern plays, which led into deep discussions. The Drama Club attrac- ted all types of students, which made working together more fun than any other activity. 120 5A Choir Boys' Choir Girls' Ensemble Die Miestersingers As one walks through the lower halls of the old building melodious sounds of Miss Lafferty's Choral groups fill the air. Through the ef- forts of the Sopranos, Altos, Tenors, Basses, Die Meistersingers, the Euter- peans, Orpheus Singers, Dominant Nine and Troubadors the musical side of Butler High School is pre- sented. The groups, combining their talents with other ensembles and soloists, participate in the Operatic Musicale, the December Program and Commencement exercises. 6B Choir Choral Groups 121 Gymnastics Club Every Thursday evening the Gym- nastics Club was found hard at work preparing for their annual Gym Show held in April. The 60 members from both the High School and Ele- mentary grades, are under the supervision of Miss Giles, Mr. Boher and Mr. Rathyen. 122 Jerseymen The Jerseymen is a historian's group affiliated with the N. J. Historical Society. The Jerseymen participate in the state as well as local activities. This year they have gone to the regional conferences and the an- nual convention. They have entered in the state history fair and have attended special programs such as the historian sight seminar. In local activities the Jerseymen sponsor the history fair, take care of the museum and are preserving the clock from the old school. Many interesting projects are being carried on in the Jerseyman office. They are working on an audio-visual film called Butler Then and Now. They want to capture the historical spots of Butler that will soon be gone. They are also involved in an oral taping project. The older people in the town are being interviewed as to their recalling of the world over 50 years ago. The years officers were: President, Peter Shepard; Vice-President, Jim Briggs; Treasurer, Dave Dilzer; Recording Secretary, Cathy Echrich; Corresponding Secretary, Michele Dupey; Club Historian, Roger Can- avan; Roger is also the Governor of the Morris County Jerseymen. 123 Film Club This was the B.H.S. film club's initial year. This group of highly motivated students banded together for mutual advancement and personal enrichment through the medium of film. The film club's greatest (?) asset is its officers who have devoted much time and effort which have resulted in a most success- ful year. The club's officers (and all of its members) are: President (omnipotent), Bruce Ballard; General Vice President, Wayne Russin; Vice President (in charge of audio effects), Jim Agnew; Vice President (in charge of extra- ordinary activities), Gordon Hartmann; Vice President (in charge of chemical supplies), Tony Roig; Vice President (in charge of pro- curement), Fred Ebers; Vice President (in charge of artistic quality). Rich Rogers; Vice President (in charge of standards and prac- tices), Dennis Florance; Vice President at Large, Bob Sherreik; Secretary for Public Relations, Steve Marino; Secretary to Vice President (in charge of extraordinary activi- ties), Vicki Zurofsky; and Sergeant at Arms, Jim Meade. Modern Dance The Modern Dance Club has been a source of creativity for many girls this year. The dancers have successfully combined music and dance in their attempt to express them- selves. The girls' achievements in this art form have been presented in the Gymnastics Show and the Arts Festival. 124 First Page Editor Bill Wisner, Editor-in-Chief Mike Wanklin, Feature Editor Kathy Singer, and Sports Editor Steve Cullen. Maple Leaf Under the able leadership of Mrs. Judith Ball, the Maple Leaf staff this year has presented the news of Butler High School to the student body. Asked about her year advising the Maple Leaf, Mrs. Ball said: I feel the staff did an effective job of producing the school newspaper especially since this was their first course in journalism. It is planned that the senior journalism class will produce next year's paper. This year marked the eleventh annual History Fair. Under the able direction of Miss Florence Athay, this year's fair saw several new techniques introduced. Four group projects were presented as were several films. History Fair 127 Football This year's Butler gridmen posted a fan- tastic 9-0 season. The offense scored 247 points while the defense allowed only 36. The backbone of the 1970 Bulldog squad was its 21 Senior members: Richard Abt, Bill Alexander, Bob Bailey, Don Barry, Allan Bossard, Jim Bowlby, Bob Buckley, John Can- ty, Al Duyn, Jay Hulbert, Richard lannaci, Larry Kahn, Paul Kelly, Bill Lavelle, Scott Marion, Paul O'Brien, Mark Sater, Mike Schmiedhauser, Andy Till, Bud Usinowicz and Jim Weaver. These stars included: Bob Bailey, Bill Lavelle, Paul O'Brien, Don Barry, Jay Hulbert, Bob Buckley, Mark Sater, Al Duyn and Gene Gluck. 130 131 132 133 134 • ',?v ' ' • 3f vS. £ f; ■•;; '• IjjMZM w 136 137 Cross Country This year's Cross Country season was mostly a re- building season with junior Charlie Patti as the only returning letterman. Other varsity runners on the team that fielded a disappointing 2-8 record were juniors Paul Brewster and Dan Curran. Sophomore Jim Pauli- son also showed some good potential as a varsity runner. Girls' Field Hockey This was the first year that the girls field hockey team competed against other schools. The team was coached by Miss Giles and had a 1-5 record, but is looking forward to a more successful season next year because most of the girls will be experienced. The team consisted of 18 girls of whom two were seniors. 138 Basketball 139 Varsity Basketball The varsity basketball team this year posted one of Butler's better records of the past few years with a 14-7 overall record and a 13-5 conference record. The team which finished second in the conference was coached by Mr. Arthur Pasquale who had his second winning season in two years as a coach at Butler. The team's strong points were its defense which only allowed 52.9 points per game to its opponents, which was one of the lowest in the conference, and its re- bounding. Some individual stars on the team were senior Ron Tintle, who was the team's leading scorer, and junior Jim Van Orden, who was the teams leading rebound- er. Other starters besides Tintle and Van Orden were seniors George Brady and Mark Sater, and junior Ralph De Pascale. Seniors Bob Bailey and Tom Davis along with sophomore Craig Hasleman and freshman Bob Gagg also had excellent seasons. J.V. Despite the general lack of talent in the composition of the team, a few boys showed individual talent and skill being appointed to the Skyline Conference All-star team. Gor- don Hartmann in foil, David Egan in epee, and Don Dale in sabre represented Butler on the all-star team. Don Dale, the only junior on the all-star team, will be Butler's first man in sabre and a hopeful prospect for next year. 147 Wrestling This year's wrestling team coached by Mr. Jack Davies had the best record in our school's history fielding a 8-4-1 record. Out- standing wrestlers were seniors Bill Stoner, Roy Gormely, and Allen Duyn. Other grap- plers that had good seasons were seniors Scott Marion, Andy Till, and Skip Malone, and junior Keith Hague. Sophomores Jim Al- brecht and Dave Bandel along with fresh- man Bob Freeh also had good seasons. At the Paterson YMCA AAU Meet, junior Linda Chiuchiolo took a third place medal for her all around performance and sophomore Rita Grasso took a first place medal in the vaulting event. At the Butler Gymnastics Club Meet Linda took second place medals in the floor exercise and vaulting events and a fifth place overall, Rita also took a third place medal in the uneven parallel bars. Both these girls also qualified for the New Jersey Gymnastics Association championships. Other members that performed well were seniors Pami Crean and Carol Lenthe, junior Sue Snure, sophomores Marcia Kahn, Gail Kuser, Debby Lipinski, Randi Ricker, and freshmen Debby Gray, Rosemary Hilsinger, and Maureen Rafferty. Because the Nugget went to press before these sports began their season, pictures of any of the games or meets were not available. We hope the teams will understand and accept these represen- tative pictures as signs of our best wishes for an undefeated season for each team. 155 The Mayor and Council of the Borough of Butler Extend the Congratulations of RESIDENTS OF BUTLER to the Class of 1971 ROGER J.
