Involvement stimulates associations with others, which contributes to the best interests of the school. Only when a unity exists between all, can productive work be accomplished. Cooperation among the administration, faculty, guidance, and the student body itself allows social and academic achievements to result from these combined efforts. Comparability of interests helps to maintain our clubs, while the awareness of special talents leads our teams to victory. However, not everyone fits into such a precise category. Some may find unity in their thoughts when it comes to writing or logical thinking in solving tedious problems. We, the Nugget staff, realize that unity must exist in order to function as a school system and so have chosen to depict it through- out this yearbook. Not only are unity and involvement in all facets of school life assets which characterize our student body, but are the qualities w'hich will prepare us for the challenges of the future. 4 5 Mr. Charles Ebers Board President Board of Education Mr. Donald Hawkins Board Secretary Mr. Irving McDonald Board Vice-President Mrs. Emma L. September 1966 presented a challenge which was to occupy much of our time for the next four years. We were invited to introduce ourselves to B.H.S. and become a part of its academic and extra-curricular life. We took advantage of this opportunity by joining clubs, electing classmates to voice our opinions on school matters, and displaying our school spirit. We learned to formulate good study habits, an asset which was to aid us throughout our high school career. The Halloween Party was our first class effort and we were quite satisfied with its success. Now that we were adjusted to the rigors of school life we were ready and eager to tackle our Sophomore year. We mastered the art of competi- tion during our ''Great Debate” and broadened our interests in other areas also. Studies, sports, class meetings for the planning of our Sophomore Hop, and club activities monopolized our time and we were well repre- sented in all areas of school life. As Junior year unfolded for us, images of varsity athletics and club offices became realities and career term papers, the Junior-Senior Prom, and college boards loomed before us. The Pep Club became an active organization when our interest caused it to contribute much spirit to the total school atmosphere. By the conclusion of our Junior year we had been exposed to pep rallies, athletic events, dances, assemblies, concerts, history fairs, all types of club functions, and scholastic endeavors and we were now on the brink of experiencing these activities for the last time. Autumn brought Senior rings, privileges, status, and a Magazine Drive that far surpassed our expectations by reaching the $7000 mark. As the weeks flew by the pressures increased and definite decisions about the future were uppermost in our minds. As we sailed through Spirit Week, the Magazine Drive, the Senior Citizenship Program, and other activities there was ever present an underlying class unity, which caused each of us to benefit from our experiences together. B.H.S. had provided the challenge— the Class of ’70 accepted, and highlighting our accomplishments with unity and involvement, we pursued our ideals in preparation for the future. 41 SHARON ADKINS 58 Hilltop Terrace, Bloomingdale VINCENT AMMIRATA 78 Summit Avenue, Butler DONALD ANDERSON 51 Arch Street, Butler Football 1,2,3,4; Basketball 1,2,3, 4; Baseball 1,2,3,4; Student Coun- cil 2,3,4; Class Pres. 2; Council Pres. 4; Citizen of the Month 3; Boys' State Alt. 3; Varsity Club 3,4; Nugget 4; Ass’t Ed.-in-Chief 4; Honor Society 4; Honor Trip 1,2,3. It plays an important role in determining codes and regulations for the school and serves the school and the students by sup- porting many activities and events. The Student Council is active in all phases of student life and its work is evidenced in the fulfillment of dances, assemblies, elec- tions, fund-raising activities, and social events which highlight the school year. Through its encouragement of active participation in school life, the Student Council has striven for the betterment of B.H.S. Our Student Council in action. Student Council officers are (from left to right): Treasurer, Kathy Beck; Secretary, Ellyn Osar; Vice-president, Carol Mungenast; and President, Don Anderson. A Sparta effigy hangs in the hal- lowed halls of Butler. With the help of our advisor, Miss Athay, the Jerseymen have accomplished much this year. Restoration of the old clock from the tower of Butler High is underway. A special project to discover the usefulness of the old iron forges in our area was also begun. The many other activ- ities included a white elephant and cake Vales, the annual Winter Outing, sponsor- ing the History Fair, participation in the Sight and Sound Festival, a demonstra- tion of audio-visual projects from area schools, the Jerseymen Convention, and the relocation of the museum from the Mace House to the lower floor of the annex. This year, the Tenth Annual History Fair, under the direction of Miss Athay was held on February 27 28. It left a lasting impres- sion on the many who viewed it. Again, a group project, the recreation of a colonial home, highlighted the fair as did a Time Capsule filmed by one class and a film on environmental pollution. Fun accompa- nied the many hours of work and prepara- tion as the advisors, coordinators, and committee members combined their ef- forts to produce our Tenth Annual His- tory Fair. This project, by Tom Roberts and Debbie Presutti was a real knock-over. History Fair Dave Dilzer shows a project to one of the judges, Sister Helen Joseph. Honor Society President Therese Clarke conducts an executive committee meeting with advisor, Miss Banta; Vice-president, Elaine Robertson; Secretary, Alice Clear)’; and Treasurer, Tom Meier. The Honor Society discusses plans for fund-raising activi- ties. Students are selected for membership in the National Honor Society on the basis of strong records attesting to their scholar- ship, leadership, character, and service. Those Juniors and Seniors that become members have extended themselves in the four facets of Honor Society and received the recognition which affords them eligi- bility for this honor, the greatest Butler High School grants. Nugget Since September, the editors and staff have been working to compile the 1970 Nugget. This book is a very significant issue for Butler High School because it represents the 50th anniversary of its pub- lication. During the year, photographs were scheduled, art work and layouts were designed and the book's theme was woven throughout its pages. Hectic hours were spent in an effort to reach deadlines and the last pictures were snapped, final lay- outs were completed and approved and copy was w'ritten and edited. Finally, with a sense of achievement and pride, the book of the year was presented to B.H.S. The Mapleleaf, Butler High School’s newspaper, is under the direction of Miss Metzger, and was published five times this year. The staff, including five senior class editors and numerous reporters, worked with a new publisher. The change in pub- lishers instituted a new procedure by which the student editors do their own make-ups and paste-ups and then return the copy for printing. The Mapleleaf reports on school news, presents editorials, feature articles, and sports news and events, thus keeping But- ler High School students informed of school life and activities. K Home Economics Club Recognizing that education takes place outside of, as well as in the classroom, the Home Economics Department sponsors a club which is designed to provide enjoy- ment and learning for all interested stu- dents. The intensive work of the Home Economics Club is incorporated in a vari- ety of areas. The club serves the school through costume making for the school play, serving at, and hostessing buffets and banquets. Other activities such as cake sales, cooking, and knitting keep the members occupied and provide fund-rais- ing opportunities. The Future Teachers of America Club was engaged in a number of varied activi- ties this year which provided insight into the field of education and service to others. The Executive Committee initiated a successful tutoring program w'hich en- abled interested students to tutor in the elementary school. Speakers, films, and discussions occupied meetings and various views were presented on the preparation for teaching, practice teaching, methods, and involvement in the teaching profes- sion. Special projects were undertaken dur- ing the year and a major one was the com- memoration of Teaching Career Month in April. Whatever the time or place, one is sure to be aware of the activities of the stu- dent aids. Even before the bell rings, the News- paper Service is sorting and delivering the ''Times” to its recipients. Meanwhile, the Radio (dub can be found preparing them- selves for the Butler High School morning show. Should an assembly be in the day’s plans, the Stage Crew prepares the audi- torium and regulates the lighting. Also filling the demands for assistance are those who work in the Attendance, Guidance, and High School Offices, by filling out cards, delivering passes, an,d answering the phone. Student aids are also greatly appreciated in the Nurse’s Office. The attractive art work and dis- plays which decorate the school illustrate the efforts of the Art Service. The Music Service is very beneficial to the choral groups. Besides those mentioned, student aids are kept busy in study halls and the library. Thus, student service leaves its mark on almost every aspect of the school. Guidance runners work energetically. Stage Crew, Group A. The club celebrated Christmas by exchanging gifts in the traditional manner and having an evening feast. A celebration was held for St. Catherine’s Day, a day for single girls to offer pastry to all eligible bach- elors. At other times French foods were prepared and experienced. Girls’ Ensemble: Elsie Conklin, Gail Conklin, Jamie Cur- ran, Linda Tideman, Barbara Lang, Diane Detlef, and Michelle Martin, with director Miss Lafferty. Choral Groups The understanding and appreciation of music is the objective pursued in the vocal activities during the course of the school year at B.H.S. Under the direction of Miss Lafferty, the choral groups, whose pro- gram selections include a wide range of the finest in choral literature, present two major concerts each year. In addition, the students participate in the Operatic Musi- cale and Commencement Exercises. Con- cern and interest on the part of the stu- dents motivate active participation in the various music groups and as a result, both the school and the individual benefit. Band. When football season rolled around, the Bulldog Marching Band presented half- time entertainment which resulted from many hours of practice. During the sea- son, the Band participated in the Clifton and Mennen Band Festivals. One of the most exciting moments of the year oc- curred when the Band marched on the field at High Point in brand new uniforms — the culmination of many efforts. Fund-raising activities, trips, exchange concerts, and the presentation of the An- nual Spring Concert filled the passing months and brought to a conclusion a year that was filled with progress and satisfaction for the B.H.S. Band. Senior Band Members: Gloria Mathews, Alice Cleary, Gloria Matzura, Donnell Sanders, Drum Major; Wendy Weatherwalks, Therese Clarke, and Dorcas Gormley. The best match of the season was against West Milford, who at the time was 6-0. The Bulldogs crushed the Highlanders in a big upset and the following week Butler smothered Kinnelon. The girls began the year with exciting field hockey matches and after cold weather set in, the gym became the center for active basket- ball and volleyball games. Spring brought softball and rounded out the year. The Gymnastics Club attracted many students on Thursday evenings. Members were able to pursue their interests in tum- bling, apparatus, vaulting, free exercise, and modern jazz. Miss Giles and Mr. Rathyen, along with several outside gym- nastic experts, instructed and helped stu- dents to master skills and perfect rou- tines. Instituted by Mrs. Thorne, the Modern Dance Club was new to B.H.S. this year. Girls learned basic steps, positions, and form and worked to develop correct rhy- thyms and a sense of timing. Once these techniques were grasped, the group pro- ceeded to incorporate grace and style into their dance.
