Opening the season after weeks of vigorous training, Butler’s team did a splendid job, win- ning the Lakeland Conference by taking eight games out of nine. The team tromped over our first four opponents with ease. Recovering later from the Ridgewood defeat on a technicality, the team bounced back, determined to beat all other adversaries. They smashed the school’s tra- ditional rival, Pompton Lakes, scoring 34 points to Pompton’s 7. The years most outstanding player was Tom Smith, who made the all-State first team. We finished the season with a 27-6 victory over Boonton. Butler Quarterback, Bobby Jones, taking advantage of effective Butler blocking, passes to Tim McCracken. Butler’s bench shouts joyfully at the scoring of another Butler touchdown. Though falling short of this goal, they brought Butler its first winning confer- ence season since 1931, a long draught. The leading scorer of the season was co-captain Johnny Moeller. Equally outstanding were co- captain Art Barr)' and our 6’4” center Bill Mc- Kenny, who led the team in rebounding, with Bucky Whritenour, Jerry Wynn, and sophomores Jack Becker and Chuck Albert- son. Douglas Doanc This year, for the first time, the Junior history students made several projects having to do with our coun- try’s history. The projects included early American costumes, maps, models of and buildings, and recon- structions of battle grounds. The history teachers hope to make this an annual event in Butler High. Junior History Project 92 SPRING Have a wonderful time. April in Gowns, tux, new shoes, new hairdos, cor- sages, tickets, car keys, and, finally, the big night! Weeks of planning. “Who shall I ask?” “Will he ask me?” “Mother, can I have a new dress?” “Dad, can I have the car?” You won- der if you will ever make it. The Junior Prom, held at Mazdabrook Farms is the social event of the year. Last year the theme was “April in Paris” and music was by Ray Block’s orchestra. ‘Girl Talk.” 96 “I could have danced all night.” Paris “Smile!” “Let's sit this one out.” 97 A family gathering in “The Perfect Gentleman.’ Bob Bryant and Lois Ecklund have a brother-sister quarrel. The Perfect Gentleman College going sis- ter Lynne Hol- man arrives home, greeted by Mother Les Chase. Chem Prof. John Eels is greeted by smitten Lois Ecklund. Lynne Holman seems upset at pub- lic display of her baby album. The entire assembly joined forces for this tune. Let There Be Music The boys take their turn in singing a well known song. Miss Ruth Lafferty. director, leads the singing groups on to another successful Spring Musicale. The girls now lead the singing. Baseball The Butler baseball team experi- enced a bitter-sweet season, winning seven and losing eight games, and beat- ing Blair Academy and Boonton twice. On the other side of the slate were double defeats dealt by Pompton Lakes and Dover. The team was ably coached by “Doc” Ingold and headed by co- captains Danny Morse and Greg Van Orden, the latter of whom led Butler in hitting with .346 average and in home runs with three. The team rookies looked promising, though, and Butler base- ball can take up the former cry of Brooklyn, “Wait’ll next year.” First-baseman Bobby Jones receives throw in time for the out during intra-squad practice. 100 Tommy while cn Smith and Jack Wehrcll discuss game route. There is nothing like an en- couraging word to make calis- thenics fun on a cold spring afternoon. Butler pole-vaulter shows grace and ability in meet with Pompton Lakes. The twins do it again. George Germann crosses the line first with Herb a close second. Sport of the Ancients W.- Butler discus thrower John Eells winds up for his first attempt in one meet with West Morris. Our cross-country season may be described in four words: Herb and George Germann. Lead- ing Butlers best team in years to a 10—0 sea- son, they took, between them, first place in every regular season meet. In the post-season Morris- town meet, Herb placed second even though he bested the previous course record. Our regular track season was not so illus- trious, winning two and losing eight. Conspic- uous among Butler’s track men were captains Mike Murphy and Pete Marzio, Steve Wilson. Neil Case, Tom Smith, Ed Malarik, and John Odenwelder. L—R Doris Cooper, Joyce Jedlicka and Marianne Tucker do some last min- ute typing. It is snowing outside and all about is bleak and cold, but let us think back a few months. It was warm. The leaves were dazzling in brilliant color; a pleasant thought, indeed. We can also think ahead to Spring, a season of hope and renewal of life. Yes, we can always look two ways. When we consider the beauty of the Fall season, we must reckon with the certainty of Winter. On the other hand, the future is unknown but we can have hope of better things to come. Some people see only the glory of the past and look for gloom in the future. They are prophets of doom. Others, looking back, see a new beginning and project their pro- gress into the future. They have vision. As the seasons follow one another, some adjust their living to meet the changing conditions and in one year return to the same starting point. This is not so among those with vision. Each year records advancement; new discoveries, improvements and new in- terests are among their accomplishments. There is always a demand for men and women with vision in all fields of endeavor in a progressive society. Conversely, the proph- ets long years ago noted, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” AMERICAN HARD RUBBER COMPANY Butler, New Jersey Division of Amerace Corporation COMPLIMENTS OF TEmple 5-1800 FUEL OIL ARDSLEY’S FURNITURE Wholesale — Retail ASSOCIATED TE 8-5610 OIL BURNER SERVICE INC.
