Butler High . . ci Very Busy Place Senior history students listen as Miss Athay propounds the saga of America. From Morning Until Bus Time Thesaurus- a reference in the library? Not so! A Greek word for 'treasure house' and that is what we hope you will find here. A treasure house of memories from the school year 1958-59. What kind of year was it? ln the world at large it was a year in which man-made satel- lites went whizzing off into space with increas- ing regularity, a year in which Quernoy ceased to be a small, unknown island off the coast of China. A year which saw the elevation of Pope Iohn XXIII, trouble in Berlin and the Near East, a Fifth Republic established in France under Charles De Gaulle, and victory for Fidel Cas- tro's rebels in Cuba, Here in the United States it was a year high- lighted by a new state, a new flag, by trouble in the South over integrated schools, the stir of the Goldfine-Adams affair, a Democratic sweep of Congress, the ninth pennant in ten years for the Yankees, and the first overtime playoff in pro football. At Butler it was a year of continued crowded rooms, halls, and lockers, of gym in the bal- cony of the auditorium during bad weather, of seven lunch periods, of the condemnation of the Kiel House, of continued accreditation by the Middle States group, of the report by the Educational Consultants on the future of B.H.S. lt saw Chef Pete Van Driel leave in the middle of the year, the gym floor ripped up and the Christmas Dance held in the grammar school, and a far less ambitious Christmas program.
