'•'here we have learned how to cope with the problems of life and how oener to solve the more difficult ones ahead. Still, puzzles are not always arduous tasks. We have given you a glimpse into the maze of our school life: teachers, classes, sports, extra-curricular activities, and students. All in all, we have tried to show you how one solves the puzzle here at Butler High School. And now it is with great pleasure that we, the staff, present to you this yearbook—The Nugget for 1957. Council members, seated: Martha Morrison, Pat McIntyre, Bobette Chennells, Leslie Vargo. Beverly Martin. Standing: Sharon Stringer, Linda Wyman, Happy Drake, John Wendt, and Barbara Smith. LIFE CAN BE MIGHTY BEWILDERING On the first day of school, September 5th, the Freshmen foresaw the future as an unsolvable puzzle. During that first day especially, confusion was everywhere. After welcoming speeches in the auditorium, the Freshmen were assigned homerooms. The eight homerooms and their teachers were: II, Mr. Hawkins; 202, Mr. Scott; 206, Mr. Buckley; 211, Miss Dennis; 306, Mr. Perfetti; 309, Mr. Stevens; 312, Mrs. Nacinovich; 314, Mr. Kenney. Going to classes that first day, Student Council members were quite a help in directing the Frosh but many still got lost. And the next day—oh, those upperclassmen. After confusion died down, the class elected Millard 'Happy1 Drake as president and Leslie Vargo as secretary. Elected Student Council representatives were: II, Bobette Chennels; 202, Martha Morrison; 206, Barbara Smith; 211, Pat McIntyre; 306, Sharon Stringer; 309, Beverly Martin; 312, John Wendt; 314, Linda Wyman. On October 19, the Freshmen made their mark in Butler when they emerged victorious from the Freshman—Sophomore Debate. The topic was Resolved: that television is beneficial to students. With the screeching of cats and the screaming of witches came the Freshman Halloween party on October 26. An evening of dancing, games, and refreshments was carefully planned. Prizes were given to Santa Parisi, Cynthia Steele, Nancy Skinner, and Maureen McNomee. The whole evening was marked on the record as a howling good time. The annual Freshman play allowed the future actors and actresses of the class to show their ability. This year the Freshman and Sophomores combined their acting talents to present a play to the student body on February 14th and 15th. This comedy kept the audience in stitches. In the spring a few of the Freshmen girls had the exciting experience of being chosen floaters to check coats, serve refreshments, and take tickets at the Prom. The Class of I960 has made a good start in solving the puzzle and is anticipating the future as Sophomores. Believe-it-or-not this is a preview of a Junior Prom. These are a few of the Freshmen sorting out left and right feet in the beginners' dancing club. The finer movements come a bit later. From 8:30 until 1:30 revellers were under the spell woven by the music of the Velve-Tones. All week long the school had been undergoing a transformation in the hands of Miss Boehm and the Prom committee, who rolled up their sleeves, donned blue jeans, grabbed paint brushes, saws, and hammers and went to work. In no time at all the gym took on the appearance of a Dutch landscape complete with windmill, tulips, and Dutch hostesses. The evening was made complete by Chef Pete Van Driel who prepared a delicious smorgasbord served by the floaters who were chosen from the Freshman class girls. • With papers spread and brushes in hand, Les Bossard, Bobby Friesinger, and Jeanne Chapman transform paper and wood into a windmill which later appeared as the 32 bandstand background. • Standing on tiptoe, Jeanie Prall adds the last stroke to the Dutch girl decorating the bar in 109. Selection is carried on by faculty committees. Five percent of a class is tapped for membership in the spring of its Junior year. Five percent more is chosen in the spring of the Senior year to complete the total of 10% of the graduating class. At a formal ceremony on April II, the new members were inducted into the organization. Five previously-elected members, John Pfahl, Irma Joseph, Bobby Friesinger, Ardie Sehulster, and Carolyn Dunne, explained, respectively, citizenship, character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The history of the Honor Society and the method of selection were explained by Mr. Gower and Mr. Easterbrook. Afterwards, new members were ushered to the stage where they repeated the pledge and were thus absorbed into the organization. During football season, Janice Mooney and Sue Holshoe, both varsity twirlers and Judy Kayhart, a varsity cheerleader, added to the color of the games. The Sophomore debating team, composed of Margaret Smith, Carolyn Scorza, Arden Culver, with Carol Pendergast as alternate, met with the Frosh for the annual Freshmen — Sophomore Debate. The Freshmen were victorious. The Class of '59 proved themselves able and talented actors and actresses in a comedy presented to the student body. With spring came Spring Concert. These long hours of practice were well worth the effort, as the concert was again a grand success. Looking forward to next year, the Sophomores dream of being upperclassmen. With three years of experience behind them, they have become adept at this art. This year, where to put the Juniors was quite a puzzle. Their nine homerooms were scattered all over the school — one was even in the cafeteria. For a week before May 3rd the Juniors could be heard but not seen, working behind closed doors, hammering, cutting and pasting, under the able direction of Miss Louise Boehm. The event? The Prom, of course. Once again the gym was transformed into a magical ballroom. • Seated around a library table, Junior members of the class debating team gather to discuss the problems of their side of a coming debate. Juniors Bob Pauli, Rodney Jordan, Frank Parisi, and EJohn Klapmuts demonstrated strong qualities for a stronger future squad. The interested and vigorous squad went as Rfar as the quarter-finals in the 22nd Interscholastic Fencing Tournament at New York University for the Castello Trophy. BULLDOGS TIE CONFERENCE! The Bulldog Baseball team, which sped unimpeded through the Lakeland Conference race in '55, scored another victory for '56 with eight wins out of twelve games to tie for first place in the Conference with Wayne. Bernie McDonough, whose pitching was outstanding last year, came through again in this year's close chase for the Conference title. Neil Berardi strengthened the league to make the mound corps doubly tough. Catcher Rich Zerener backed the pair of chuckers, with veterans Pete Smith and Joe Lynch at second and short and Joe Mewhiney in center. Jim Alise played at third; Johnny Alise was in left, George Robertson in right field, and newcomer Claude Williams at first. Other members of Butler squad were: Wesley Coe, Bill Oliver, Don Rhinesmith, Dennis Dykstra, John Sanford, Bob Doyle, Marty Olson, Frank Paris!, Don Gregory, Gordon Haoland, Chris Striffler and Austin Koenen. 97 • Jim Sehulster was counted on for points and experience in leading a very green squad last spring. Graduation had sadly depleted the ranks of point-getters leaving experienced trackmen at a premium. A heavy blow was struck to Mr. Hawkins' charges early in the season when star miler Jimmy Sehulster came down with such a severe attack of shin splints he was out for the season. Seniors Denny Sweetman, Roy Greene, Ron Norman, Don Theune, Bill Knight, and Bob Van Handel scored well for the Bulldogs. Junior racer Joe Galizio broke the school record at 2:06 for the half ond won that race in the conference meet. Ron Norman was conference pole vault champ while the medley relay team scored at the 98 Morris County relays held at Dover. B U T THINCLADS E R • Buzz Martin turned from his baseball career to the unusual track combination of putting the shot and running the half mile — both with success. • Denny Sweetman turned in a sterling year to round out his four years of track. He was Butler's mainstay in the hurdles and quarter. • Roy Greene makes like the man on the flying trapeie as he Hies through the air with the greatest of ease. Using trapezes being illegal, however, Roy uses his own momentum to carry his leap out beyond the eighteen foot mark for a victorious jump. • Coach Don Hawkins figures the points during a close home meet. Having lost most of a powerhouse squad, he rebuilt successfully. -I J.V. Cheerleaders: L. to R.: Dotty Reed, Barbara Bur- zinski, Joan Roach. Carolyn Dunne, Sally Kordula and Kathleen Herman. He showed his loyalty to his school when he turned up during football season and the Class of '57 is proud to claim him as one of its very own. MISS DINA NIELSON • Senior Class advisor, without whose patient help such mere trifles as class rings, magazine campaign, senior play, and senior trip would have been impossible. A few members also would add thank you for her help in teaching them math. 145 • Judy Ohr, determined to play football in spite of threats to have her expelled, flaunts her equipment for all to see. The cast, L. to R.: Ronnie Sisco as Tommy Green, John Pfahl as Mr. Wilson, Mary Jane Moeller as Joan, Jackie Isbill as Agnes, Judy Ohr as Ginger, Jeanne Allen as Liz, and Bill Oliver as Eddie Davis. “TIME OUT FOR GINGER” A talented cast of ten under the direction of Miss Louise Boehm had the audience rolling in the aisles with their presentation of Time Out For Ginger, a hilarious three-act comedy, on November 16th and 17th. Father discovers that raising three daughters is enough to create more than a few grey hairs, especially when the youngest, Ginger, decides that she is going to be a girl football player. Stage Crew, Costume Club, Make-Up Squad, Construction Crew and all the senior homeroom ticket chairmen worked hard to make it a success. The proceeds helped the Nugget business staff find its way through its maze of financing the yearbook. • Ronnie Sisco leads with a left onto the chin of astonished four letterman Bill Oliver. • Mary Jane Moeller and Gail Cluff listen seriously and quietly as their mother, Jackie Isbill, explain the big problem of Ginger and her football career and the other problem—their father who has become a wild-eyed football fan. • John Pfahl records the names of the cast on the back-stage wall. 0- J i ' B,il O f uo Rs '1 pf s' ' • Judy Ohr gives Ronnie Sisco a piece of her mind right after her father, Rich Fairlamb, advised him to stand up for his rights and to show her who's boss. • Rah! Rah! She scored a touchdown!!! • Stars in her hair. Senior debaters, I. to r.: Sue Simpson, Bobby Friesinger, Bob Silverman, Flora Hand, Irma Joseph, and Clare Stutz.
