Four hectic weeks of grueling rehearsals produced the story of 13 year old Judy Graves and the problems she created for her resigned parents, her exasperated sister her wondering family friends, the embittered family maid, and her adoring friend. Those two nights, as Judy emerged into a young and lovely junior Miss, propfinders, make-up squad members, costume hunters, prompters, and stage crews members quietly waited behind new backdrops Qpre sented by the Class of 'SU for the verdict of capaci ty audiences who later classed the comedy among the best of Butler's annual senior plays. The darkened atmosphere tinted by colored slides, the organ accompaniment, the variations of vocal and instrumental selections made the December Festival of Fellowship and Brotherhood through Music a most significant one. Christmas came to us in another way, too. Using tree ornaments as their theme, art students beautined the front windows. Cleverly designed snowmen, angels, and lambs bounded forth from the artistic decorations. Sophomore Play Two Crooks and a Lady , directed by Mr. DeLul-re, was presented in December. Dealing with the attempts of two thieves to rob a paralytic old lady of her jewels, it was a fine example of melo- dramatic suspense. Lemon Pie for Andy , directed by Mr. Goldberg, was a well-done humorous satire. It concerned a meddlesome family who inadvertently discourage a young man's intentions to marry their daughter. The final play, pre.sented in February by the junior class, was The Pink Dress , a play with human im- pact, directed by Mr. DeLuke. The story, dealing chiefly with three people, tells of their confused feelings and frustrations, The dissension between father and daughter attains dramatic heights when, at the end, the father voices his deep love for his daughter and brings about a reconciliation. Every 45 minutes, when a new class period began, the students would be seen trudging back to school or running downtown to the special stations which held their powder-paints, water, rags and brushes. So great was the interest displayed by the public, that the music department decided to extend the usual one night performance of previous years to three nights. Music groups included Choir, Girls' Glee Club, and Boys' Chorus, all directed by Miss Lafferty. These choral groups were featured on the first half of the program. The concert band, conducted by Mr. Harris, performed during the second half of the program. Both groups presented various types of music, rang- ing from spirituals and other religious works to samples of folk music and popular melodies. Many of our outstanding music students had opportunity to display their talents at the concert. Among these were Shirley Peters, a four year Choir member, who besides conducting a chorale sang a duet with Lloyd Canty. Geraldine Van Dyck, soloist on the program, and Lloyd Canty were our All-State Chorus members this year. Bob Condit, Bob Huxster, and jim Tintle, well-known members of the school dance band, exhibited their talents in a trumpet trio. Mildred Bedell, a familiar figure on the football held, directed the band in a rousing march. The finale, combining all vocal and instrumental groups, rose to emotional heights climaxed by the inspiring message, And all that man is, or ever will be, is born of the song that he holds in his heart. The Council's duties include hnan- cing the club program, subsidizing the underclass pictures in this yearbook and the underclass social functions, leading the weekly assembly programs. representing every homeroom, raising money, en- couraging citizenship in school by hall duty, and promoting school spirit. Led this year by President jane Gormley and ad- vised by Miss Struyk, Mr. Goldberg, and Miss Palmer, the thirty-three council members have been actively carrying out their duties since the first day of school when they took over citizenship posts. Scarcely was the ink dry on our 1951 medalist book before this year's Nugget Staff met to choose a cen- tral unifying thought around which to build a 1952 book. Of one thing we were certain: our theme had to be completely different, completely novel, and completely adjustable to our needs. Rightly or wrongly, we felt that a music box was our answer. After that we were set. Warned and advised of the rushed, anxious, tense struggles be- fore final deadlines, our group still lost itself blithe- ly in copy, pictures, captions, ads, idents, headlines and typing. SER ICE GROUPS BE EFIT SCHOOL The success of the service clubs depended on the willingness of members to give up precious time in and out of school to benefit the school. The Library Service assisted Miss Curtis in keeping the library running smoothly and efhciently. The main tasks of the members were to check books in and out and help repair them. The Music Service members were usually in the music room cataloguing music, tiling records, prepar- ing slides, distributing choir gowns, and checking that the victrola and recording machine worked pro- perly. These students, directed by Miss Lafferty, also arranged musical assembly programs. The Radio Service planned and presented educa- tional and entertaining broadcasts commemorating na- tional holidays. Miss Hayward added the finishing touches to these programs in which students had a chance to show their potential talent. Everyone knows the importance of morale to our fighting men. The Armed Forces Contact Group tried to do its part by writing to alumni at army camps in this country and abroad. Their letters related happen- ings of interest in the community and school. Mr. Cleary aided the group in setting up a bulletin board and also helped them obtain new addresses. The Food Service learned to plan meals. Mrs. Gerrish showed the girls the proper way to serve foodg they put this knowledge to use at the annual Teachers' Reception and other school functions. SERVICE CLUBS PERFORM ESSENTI L JCBS l98ll Several other service organizations contributed to the club program by performing essential jobs. Col- lecting the absentee lists and checking club attendance during the activities periods were the tasks of the four Club Service groups. Miss jaeckle, Mrs. Bailey, and Mr. Cleary supervised the girls. Busy at the presses turning out tickets, programs, and booster cards, the members of the Print Squad produced most of the school's print work. Mr. Rick- man guided the boys in setting up these jobs. Are you interested in taking a trip to Mars? That's exactly what the Science Club did-an imag- inary trip, of course. With their adviser, Mr. Car- penter, they discussed the type of rocket ship and clothing they would need and also calculated the dis- . , ' tance to Mars. The students discovered it was a great thrill to reach Mars before anyone else. Getting material typed and mimeographed is a problem in any school. That is why the Secretarial Service, directed by Miss Benoy, performed such a necessary service. Preparing data needed for classes and clubs, the girls typed records, cut stencils, and ran off materials for the teachers. The Te.st Service Squad aided Miss Belding in tab- ulating the results of the weekly Spelling and World Affairs Tests. They then worked out the grades which appeared on the report cards every marking period. Students who served in these clubs felt a real sense of accomplishment as they realized how much assist- ance they had given the school. Most of the orchestra and dance band members had also been members of the marching band fsee pages 114-1151. In preparation for the weekly games, the band rehearsed daily, parading past the school on their way to Memorial Field to practice. When the strains of March, March to Victory floated into classrooms, heads began to nod here and there and tapping feet kept time to the rhythm. On Saturdays the sight of the blue band uniforms braided with gold gave added pep and spirit to the team and the eager spectators. After football season, the transformation from the outdoor environment of band practice to the in- door setting in which the orchestra and dance band rehearsed, took little time. After outdoor rehearsals, the change to Kiel House and the auditorium was welcomed readily, and the members easily adapted gan preparations for the Senior Play program. The Kiel House, a stone's throw from the school, is the center for all instrumental practice and instruc- tion. The dance band or Kiel House Kats derived its name from this rehearsal location and practiced after- noons and evenings here for performances such as the class play. This was the first year that the Kats had played for Senior Play, and their performance was remarkable. Later in the year, Mr. Harris held tryouts for vocalists with the Kats. Those chosen were Gloria Jeune, Lehman Mann, and Ernie Mancini, who had been vocalist last year. In February the Kats gave a very successful assembly introducing the new vocal- ists and many new numbers. Honors for length of service go to Mary Lou Jones, Dessel Card, and Cliff Monzeglio, who were four year band and orchestra members. Dessel be- longed to the dance band, also. During February the orchestra, composed of 34 members, rehearsed daily in the auditorium during seventh periods. The re- sult of this long and tedious work was the superb themselves to the new situation. Soon after football season ended, the dance band in the Kiel House be- music heard at the Spring Concert, which is fast be- coming a school tradition. Standing: Mr. Harris, Ed Fredericks. Another student group, Nancy Volpe, jane Dilzer, Mary Lou jones, Judy Mace, Lehman Mann, and Bob Fox, was chosen to sing in the Operatic Musicale at Millburn. There is much interest in opera here. Nearly a hundred students attended one or the other of two trips to the Met to see La Tm:-'iam or Pagliarri and Cazulferia Rzulimna. In February a few students viewed a behind-the-scenes working rehearsal of Otello at the Met. Noteworthy, too, is the fact that Mary Lou jones, john Fredericks, and Ronald Edwards are members of the Metropolitan Student Opera Guild. This organization helps to further interest and know- ledge in musical education. i- CHOIR AND GLEE CLUB Inset: .I SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES THESE CLUBS TEACH EUROPEA LIFE The French, German, and Folk Dancing clubs share the common interest of discovering more about the peoples of Europe. The Folk Dancing Club, under the guidance of Miss Bock, gave its members the opportunity to learn many European customs which are expressed in the dances of these lands. The club, composed entirely of girls, made or borrowed authentic costumes which added much color to the dances, and helped to make them more effective. In this way it was possible for the members to gain more knowledge about many European cultures. Music for the dances was sup- plied by a new assortment of phonograph records. Le Cercle Francais and the German Club famil- iarized their members with life in France and Ger- many. One of the activities of the French Club was to gather articles, maps, newspapers, magazines, and other forms of printed matter pertaining to France. Each member kept a scrapbook for these collected materials. The club adviser, Miss Carlin, who recently studied at the Sorbonne, supplied many unusual items of interest. As an outgrowth of the club's activities, a group of seniors in February attended a French film and had dinner at a French restaurant in New York City. During February, representatives of the club conducted the morning exercises over the Public Address System. On March 14, all students taking French participated in an assembly planned by the French Club. The program featured a lively skit, with the students impersonating French puppets. The entire assembly joined the club in singing Alouette. They also presented a short French film to the entire school, adding much variety, and incidentally some amusement to the program. The German Club, under the guidance of Miss Smith, found out a great deal about Germany and its customs. Miss Smith, who travelled in Germany for some time, had much to offer the club from her own experiences. In early fall, the club went on a hike to the top of Kakeout Mountain where they had their lunch and topped off the day with the singing of German folk songs. Many times throughout the year, the club had opportunity to see and take turns wearing native German costumes acquired by some of the members, Seated, left to right: Shirley Decker, Ethel Cook, Ann Xwinslow, Marie Mar agliano, Nancy Fetherman, Lee joseph, Cathie Hughes, Nancy Porter, Gail Beal Standing: Marvin Levine, Shirley Arvidson, Miss Carlin, Judy Sawer, Roberta Iilolq Vargo, Robin Came. J- y I J 1 f STAGE GROUPS PERFORM VITAL JOBS Helped by the unceasing and untiring efforts of the stage groups, who are so vital in giving any play the needed polish and finishing touches, student actors were able to present spectacular productions. First, the Costume Club hunted up, sorted, mended, pressed, and fitted the numerous garments for all performers. These girls often had to fashion outfits from odds and ends of attic relics. Next, the Art Service supervised and produced all necessary materials. The artists designed paper mache props, painted the scenery which the Stage Crew had built and assembled, and planned posters and pro- grams. The Make-up Squad first studied the art of stage make-up. Then, applying their knowledge of proper powdering and rouging techniques, they created natural, colorful, and true-to-life characters. Finally, the Stage Crew supplied sound effects and expert lighting, and pulled the scene-ending cur- tains. The only recognition these groups received and wanted for their painstaking preparations came from the perfection of the performances. For his help in furthering the ideals of wildlife conservation, Mr. Conklin received the George Neill Award, a full size deerskin, from the Essex County Conservation Officers Association. Through their hunting, fishing, camping, and trapping program, J. S. A. members received training in good sportsmanship and conserva- tion. A trip to the N. Y. And here come eighty- four running people-the largest band in Butler's history. ln order to have enough time to perform their many, tricky routines, band members used track techniques and raced from one formation to another. As exciting games gave the loyal rooters cause to yell, the band formed the loudest cheering section ever. The winning team also allowed the band ample opportunity to lead victory parades through town. SHOW FANCY FOR After football season, the band crowded into the auditorium for daily practice since band is a regularly scheduled class now. This extra practice plus hard work and the able leadership of Mr. Harris insured the band of a most successful and enjoyable year. For the first time, the band elected officers: Mary Lou jones, president, CIiH Monzeglio, vice president, jean McEwan, secretary, Judy Mace, treasurerg Stan Muise, Evelyn Vlfillenbrock, and Lee joseph, librar- ians. After opening the season by downing Passaic Valley, 34-6, Coach Becker's Bulldogs went on to become Butler's second undefeated football team. Only a 20-20 tie with Madison marred an otherwise perfect record. In the big game of the season against Pompton Lakes, the Butler offensive and defensive squads proved themselves too strong for the Pomp- ton eleven and, for the first time since 1946, came out on top, 13-O. BUTLER BATTLES BASKETB LLERS Basketball hopes were running high at the begin- ning of the seasong it looked as if Butler would cap- ture the Lakeland Conference title in all three major sports. But, the Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker to Pompton Lakes by a single basket and, after an upset at the hands of Passaic Valley, finished in second place with a conference record of seven wins and three losses. Coach De Paso's well-balanced squad presented scoring power in Tom Edge and joe Wyble as well y ,www f, x if S as rebound strength in Harlo Conklin and Lee Aller- mang Dick Wyble and Cliff Holman alternated as the fifth player. Tom Edge, playing his first year of varsity ball, scored 235 points to break Ed Conklin's 1947 record of 217. Although five of the regulars will graduate, strong varsity reserves and a wealth of material from Coach Hawkins' j. TEAM, UNDEFEATED IN CONFERENCE Butler made baseball history in 1951 by becoming the first team in Lakeland Conference history to win all eight conference games. The Bulldogs finished with a season's mark of nine wins and three losses, losing only to Morristown in regularly scheduled play. The other two losses came at the hands of Southside, Newark in the Greater Newark Invitational Tourna- ment and Lodi in the Group III State Championship playoffs. All-State honors went to pitcher Red McDowell, who won eight games, and joe Wyble, who sparkled in the infield. McDowell, Wyble, and Tom Edge made the All-Conference team. Will Utter finished the season with an impressive .451 batting averageg McDowell, Wyble, Edge, joe Phillips, and Al Mc- Connell all hit well over the .300 mark.
