casting Studios. His satisfaction is complete as he watches an actual radio broadcast. A more thoughtful look comes upon our hero's brow for he is confronted with the question of a vocation. Individual conferences with the personnel department and group conferences with prominent ex- perienced speakers help him make his choice. Thinking of the time when he will be a senior. he joins hopefully in preparation for the junior Prom. Xlforking faithfully on hand-painted invita- tions and decorations of colorful Mexican scenery. he does his part in honoring the graduating class. XYith the strains of a smooth. prominent orchcgfra still resounding in his ears. he feels the year has flown on wings of song to be ended a little too abruptly by examinations. Now his senior year arrives. and we observe a distracted individual frantically busy with in- numerable activities. The magazine campaign is passed with good record as a salesman. Stationery sales are next. Nobody Home diverts his attention to the tactics of disposing of unwanted guests. In December he seems beside himself in preparation for examinations, for Christmas. and for One Gift Above Another. the Senior Dramatic Cflubs 4- Q11 F1 if-Tl' second play of the year. He feels the true spirit of Christmas as two scenes unfold the contrast between the rich and the poor and l explain the secret of happiness. Soon after the Christmas vaca- tion he spends the full month of january preparing for mid- year examinations. The prox- imity of the XVashington trip comes to his consciousness as he tries to earn more money by selling tickets to the annual senior play. The Brat proves an immense success. as well as the dancing, which followed in the gymnasium, decked with balloons. On May 6, we see him hustling to be on time for the beginning of the XVashington trip. Three full days of travel. sight-seeing and pleasure pass in what seems a moments time. Soon after the Prom he settles down in preparation for finals. Swiftly succeeding all this. come thoughts of the solemn liaccalaureate and Clonnnence- ment services. XY'e leave him as he stands on the threshold of a new life. casting a lingering backward glance of affection and grati- tude toward his own Butler High School. NUGGET

President JESSE GLODAVA, Vice-President HELEN RHINESMITH, Secretary RUTH XVEAVER, Treasurer MARGIE RHINESMITH Assistant Treasurer The graduating class of 1940 would like to take you with it on its journey of reminiscence over the past four eventful years . . . We see a student entering high school as a freshman with a bewildered, uncertain air which in the ensuing weeks rapidly disappears. Wfith the innova- tion of an intra-curricular activity period, with attendance at the freshman party, by contact with teachers and classmates in his studies, and by physical exercise on the field and in the gymnasium, he becomes an integral part of the school and works and develops with it. With eager expectation he goes to his first social, a masquerade party. The curfew hour is 9:30. just imagine' W , - , ' 7' ' ' ' ' ' e see a class proud of its skill in winning the interclass basketball champion- ship. Besides class work the rapidly maturing freshman gets a contact with life by trips with the Science Club to New York, with the Astronomy Club to the Hayden Planetarium, and with the Dramatic Club to see talented actors and actresses at work in a New York production. By this time we see the freshman with an air of sophistication as he plays host on Freshman Day june X 4. to the incoming freshmen with the dramatic performance of The Tantrumf' Joyfully returning from a splendid and restful vacation, the sophomore greets a few new members and prepares to make smooth progress. Glimpsing into the past, we see him take a keener interest in his studies and get a clearer picture of their place in life by practical trips to farms, to factories, to news- paper plants, and to other places of importance and interest. His dramatic efforts have encouraged others to discover their hidden talents. and the Sopho- more Dramatic Club presents The Pampered Darling. Finally, in a gym- nasium decorated in a winter setting, he enjoys himself at the Sophomore Dance. As we take up our reminiscence again, we see a junior busily engaged in a rehearsal of the junior Dramatic Clubs offering of Sauce for the Gosling, As a culmination for the newspaper study made in English Ill. enthusiastically he procures from mother the fare for a trip to the Times XVhile he is in New York, like a grown-up, he wants to see other things. see him taking in the sights of Broadway and enjoying the pleasures of the National Broad- THE 1940 lHl lllll
