We see a student entering high school as a freshman with a bewildered, uncertain air which in the ensuing weeks rapidly disappears. Wfith the innova- tion of an intra-curricular activity period, with attendance at the freshman party, by contact with teachers and classmates in his studies, and by physical exercise on the field and in the gymnasium, he becomes an integral part of the school and works and develops with it. With eager expectation he goes to his first social, a masquerade party. The curfew hour is 9:30. just imagine' W , - , ' 7' ' ' ' ' ' e see a class proud of its skill in winning the interclass basketball champion- ship. Besides class work the rapidly maturing freshman gets a contact with life by trips with the Science Club to New York, with the Astronomy Club to the Hayden Planetarium, and with the Dramatic Club to see talented actors and actresses at work in a New York production. By this time we see the freshman with an air of sophistication as he plays host on Freshman Day june X 4. to the incoming freshmen with the dramatic performance of The Tantrumf' Joyfully returning from a splendid and restful vacation, the sophomore greets a few new members and prepares to make smooth progress. Glimpsing into the past, we see him take a keener interest in his studies and get a clearer picture of their place in life by practical trips to farms, to factories, to news- paper plants, and to other places of importance and interest. His dramatic efforts have encouraged others to discover their hidden talents. and the Sopho- more Dramatic Club presents The Pampered Darling. Finally, in a gym- nasium decorated in a winter setting, he enjoys himself at the Sophomore Dance. As we take up our reminiscence again, we see a junior busily engaged in a rehearsal of the junior Dramatic Clubs offering of Sauce for the Gosling, As a culmination for the newspaper study made in English Ill. enthusiastically he procures from mother the fare for a trip to the Times XVhile he is in New York, like a grown-up, he wants to see other things. see him taking in the sights of Broadway and enjoying the pleasures of the National Broad- THE 1940 lHl lllll casting Studios. His satisfaction is complete as he watches an actual radio broadcast. A more thoughtful look comes upon our hero's brow for he is confronted with the question of a vocation. Individual conferences with the personnel department and group conferences with prominent ex- perienced speakers help him make his choice. Thinking of the time when he will be a senior. he joins hopefully in preparation for the junior Prom. Xlforking faithfully on hand-painted invita- tions and decorations of colorful Mexican scenery. he does his part in honoring the graduating class. XYith the strains of a smooth. prominent orchcgfra still resounding in his ears. he feels the year has flown on wings of song to be ended a little too abruptly by examinations. Now his senior year arrives. and we observe a distracted individual frantically busy with in- numerable activities. The magazine campaign is passed with good record as a salesman. Stationery sales are next. Nobody Home diverts his attention to the tactics of disposing of unwanted guests. In December he seems beside himself in preparation for examinations, for Christmas. and for One Gift Above Another. the Senior Dramatic Cflubs 4- Q11 F1 if-Tl' second play of the year. He feels the true spirit of Christmas as two scenes unfold the contrast between the rich and the poor and l explain the secret of happiness. Soon after the Christmas vaca- tion he spends the full month of january preparing for mid- year examinations. The prox- imity of the XVashington trip comes to his consciousness as he tries to earn more money by selling tickets to the annual senior play. The Brat proves an immense success. as well as the dancing, which followed in the gymnasium, decked with balloons. On May 6, we see him hustling to be on time for the beginning of the XVashington trip. Three full days of travel. sight-seeing and pleasure pass in what seems a moments time. Soon after the Prom he settles down in preparation for finals. Swiftly succeeding all this. come thoughts of the solemn liaccalaureate and Clonnnence- ment services. XY'e leave him as he stands on the threshold of a new life. casting a lingering backward glance of affection and grati- tude toward his own Butler High School. This year's Council has behind it an admirable record of achievements, A system which seemed but a vague prospect has become a material success: the student organization. The student organization entitles the student partici- pating to reduced prices at football games, eliminates class dues, pays for the class pictures in the yearbook, and helps finance club activities. Along the lines of entertainment the Student Council sponsored a lfall Dance and a Spring Dance, fintroducing Sadie I-lawkin's Dayj, an Amateur Hour. and a host of tea dances. After the Board of Education gave the needed funds, the Council took steps to acquire material and suggestions for a Butler High School ban' ner. For the benefit of the incoming Freshmen the Council issued The ln- formerf' a handbook which contains the courses, subjects, teachers, intra- curricular activities, etc., which make him feel better acquainted with our school. The Student Council has turned over a fund to the administration which will be used expressly to acquire assembly programs for next year which will not cost the student anything. l'nder the auspices of the Student Council. homeroom representative elec- tions were held in October. The homeroom representatives hold their meetings once a week at which they act as a medium between the homeroom pupils and the Student Council. lt is the duty of the homeroom representative to sell tickets, collect money. and be a speaker for his particular homeroom, The junior-Senior rep- resentativ es carried out a Christmas Dance while the l7reshmen-Sophi:mrares started interest in a second XY'orld's Fair Trip. THE 1940 OFFICE PRACTICE CLASS The Office Practice Class is a select group of stuclents vvho have proven their efficiency in the freshman year. The members of the cl rss are all on the same level and to remain in the class they must maintain at least a C average. In the sophomore ancl junior classes shorthancl ancl typing are emphasized and the seniors receive an office practice training equivalent to an elementary busi- ness school course. The Office Practice Class cloes all the typing. stencil cut- ting. mimeographing. etc.. for the school. The class has become proficient in the use of almost all the modern office machinery. inclucling the aclcling machine. mimeograph. and the lfcliphone. During the liaster vacation tvvo girls took a transcription test at XY right's. They turnecl in tests surpassing any others taken by high school graduates. SENIOR SERVICE CLUB The Senior Service Club is carriecl on by those members of the Senior Class vvho are sincere in their efforts to clevelop their class ancl wish to be of tre- menclous assistance to the faculty. The organization has taken the place of the Social Committees and Executive Committees which have provecl inadequate because of the increasing number of stuclents in the Senior Class. This service club forms the nucleus of the Senior Class and cloes much to encourage money projects. foster school spirit. and takes the huge task of a fevv upon themselves as a group. The club is a select oneg being composecl of the oflicers of the Senior Class. and such other members as are selectecl at the cliscretion of several faculty members. The projects successfully fostered for the benefit of the XVashington Trip are: the sale of magazines, of Christmas cards, and of stationery, and the Senior Play. This group has presented tvvo plays, No- body Home and One Gift After Another, and is yet very active at the weekly Thursday meetings. Choral speech and other dramatic activities are practiced and studied in detail. Besides dramatizing various skits at the club meetings. the junior Dra- matic Club spent many interesting club meetings practicing choral speaking. The Wfhite Phantom, a one act mystery play. was presented in assembly. Accompanied by Miss Coursen. their faculty adviser, they made a trip to New York, making a tour of the N. B. C. studios, visiting a Phil Cook program, and attending the play Life XY'ith Father. The activities of the Sophomore Dramatic Club are directed by the elected officers and Miss Smith, its faculty adviser. Besides presenting the play, Not Quite Such a Goose. this group has proved to be very helpful as vvell as entertaining. At weekly club meetings. one act plays, skits, and impersonations are read and acted. At the first meetings the members of the lfreshman Dramatic' Cilub vvere given an opportunity to introduce themselves to the group and thus become better accluainted. Its activities included the discussion and practice of man- ners and the vvriting and clramatization of short skits. Buddy Buys an Orchid vvas presented in assembly as one of the spring activities vvith Miss Hayvvard as faculty adviser. THE I9 0 DEBATING It has become desirable because of the conditions of the world today to introduce discussion groups which give the students an opportunity to render their opinions on the various problems facing us today. These discussion groups are familiarly known as the Forum and Debating Clubs. Since many students became interested in debating it has been found ne- cessary to divide them up according to classes and because of this division a certain amount of rivalry became obvious and now each year the freshmen and sophomores debate. The victorious team debates the xvinner from the junior and senior groups. Each year members from Roxbury High School challenge our debating team. NUGGET 6 1 MUSIC The music groups of Butler l-ligh School are composed of the Symphony and Dance Orchestras along with the Glee Club. These groups provide enter- tainment at the Senior Play. School Commencement. liaccalaureate. and special assemblies. lfor further instructions in music, lessons are given after school. The Hometowners which is the name of the Dance Orchestra, is a se- lected group of students. Along with the Glee Club a special program is pre- sented each year in May. The usual custom was to present a special program in the assemblies, but this vear it was arranged mostly for the benefit of the students' parents and it was presented in the evening. The Cilee Club is also a very popular and talented group. Several members were chosen for the all-state chorus. They were: Cienexieve Luke. Theresa Clampagnia, Betty Bowman. Betty lNlacl-achlan, Lois Mcflarthy, and Cal Mc- Carthy. XY'e students are all proud of the music groups under the direction of Mr. Depue. THE 1940 COMMERCIAL CLUB The Commercial Club. with Miss XViley as faculty adviser. has had much experience in preparing for positions. Glenn Ciardners book Hun' In Gr! .1 job. has been read. reported, and discussed in detail. The group has given business plays and skits during its meetings. These plays and skits have been topped by personal interviews with Miss jaeckle. The Commercial Clubs highlight was the Business Show. At this show Electric Typewriters. Ediphones, Adding Machines, Calculators, Mimeograph Machines, and various other business machines were exhibited and explained, LIBRARY SERVICE CLUB The Library Service Club receives library training and assists Miss Curtis. our librarian. This club renders its services through mending books. arranging I I I K L ' K, L and filing catalog cards, and recording books taken out each period. Much time is spent in training the members to use reference books as well as reading and studying various books. BANKING CLUB The Banking Club has been referred to as being one of the most helpful and useful clubs to the depositors and to its members. This club serves as practice for many students because of its clerical work. All bookkeeping of both high school and grammar school banking is done by this club. They are ot great help to a pupil who likes to talk to a group and discuss present day topics. This year each club has sponsored one assembly. Both clubs secured speakers upon the foreign situationg they were well received by the student body. Perhaps the most outstanding group is the Senior Forum Club. Each year they visit Madison for a formal discussion meeting with the surrounding schools participating. Several representatives are sent from this group to at- tend the meeting where interesting speaking and discussion take place. The Chemistry Club under Mr. Herling is one of the most interesting clubsg open to Chemistry students. Many interesting and educating experiments are carried on and demonstrated. The purely recreational clubs are the Ping Pong Clubs and the Sing Club, The Sing Club is new this year. It is a very popular club, although it is an underclass girls clubg it is numbered to the limit. The girls gather each week in the Music Room and sing popular songs and old favorites which are pro- jected onto a screen by the slide lantern. Other new clubs this year are the Craft Club for underclass girls, coun- seled by Miss lienoy, and Miss Ketchunrs Garden Club for the upperclasses. The Craft Club has devoted its time to metal tapping and making useful articles from paper. The Ciarden Club has been very useful, During the Christ- mas vacation small gilded fir trees were placed in the front windows, and the school in general was given a Christmas appearance. Advice is given in the club on how to grow and arrange gardens and flowers. THE I9 0 Y The French Club has made many advances. This year there are two groups. a French Conversational Club and the other well-known club of years before. Entre Amiesf' These clubs are made up of students who have a special liking of French and of French customs. At Christmas time they had a play and later in the year presented a very successful play during a regular morning assembly. The Hi-Y Club under Mr. Ball and Mr. Appleton is the most exclusive organization in the school. liach year the senior members choose a few juniors to carry on the clubg thus the club is kept alive. The club was not organized until late this year but it did compete in the basketball league and finished about the middle of the group. As yet no guests have been invited to the Hi-Y activities. but plans for a Father-Son baseball game and a dance held jointly with the Varsity-B Club are being made. In March the Hi-Y sponsored an assembly and sent two delegates. Victor Nsinowicz and Harold Gardner, to the County Conference at lioonton. ' V' 7 ' 7 SPIlHlS FOOTBALL After years of mediocre football teams, Butler High, under the coaching regime of Mr. George Van Heusen has attained the football heights. The 1939 season saw B. H. S. complete one of the most successful years in the school's football history as eight victories were recorded, against one lone de- feat. Among the honors gained by this year's team was the Morris County championship and a co-championship with Hackettstown for the Tri-County league title. Butler entered a new phase in her athletic program by playing Morristown High in a night game at Hinchliffe Stadium, Paterson, October 28. The Blue and Gold eleven came out the victor, 14-7. B. H. S. swept through the first half of her schedule piling up decisive victories. On succeed- ing Saturdays, Newton, Hawthorne, Boonton, Pompton Lakes and Roxbury felt the sting of defeat at the hands of the Butler eleven. For the first time in Butler's football history the Blue and Gold defeated Pompton Lakes on the gridiron. This memorable 19-0 shellacking of the Cardinals sent Butler fans into a happy frenzy of excitement and praise for this great victory over Butler's traditional rival. Dover, however, proved of sterner stuff and it was not until after a hard, close-fought battle that Butler finally tasted the fruits of victory. The Blue and Gold clinched the Morris County championship by virtue of this 13-12 triumph over Dover. But all good things generally come to an end, and so, whatever hopes Butler had for an undefeated season, were ended as Cran- ford defeated Butler 14-6. Thanksgiving day, Butler brought an impressive season to a close with a 21-6 win over Ramsey. THE 1940 I Yrs No football game would be complete without the local band marching onto the athletic field followed by the cheer leading squad promenading in ' their display of school colors. An outstanding, colorful contribution this year was the work of drum majors, jimmy Chandoin and Dick Aldrich, and the three girl twirlers, Dorothy Bayne, Theresa Campagnia, and Beatrice Mazza. Pride swells in the heart of every Butler fan as hours of hard work result in this beautiful display of our school's band. FOOTBALL RECORD Butler 14-Morristown 7 Butler 14-Newton 0 Butler 55-Hawthorne 0 Butler 21-Boonton 7 Butler 19-Pompton Lakes Butler 46-Roxbury O Butler 13-Dover 12 Butler 6-Cranford 14 Butler 21-Ramsey 6 NUGGET BASKETBALL A six game winning streak at the tail-end of the season turned what ap- peared a disastrous basketball record into a rather successful campaign. lfight victories and seven defeats marked Butler Highs court season. Paced by But- ler's big three, joseph Connizzio, james Brown, and Arthur Day, who scored a total of 296 points among them, the basketball team in 15 games scored a grand total of -i6l points against -118 gained by their opponents. The B. H. S. varsity opened the season with a 58-20 victory over the alumni. Losses to Dover, Hackettstown and Hawthorne followed before an- other victory could be achieved. This was a decisive -li-27 thumping adminis- tered upon Boonton High. The next time out Butler lost a one point heart- breaker to Pompton Lakes. Cranford then proceeded to hand the Blue and Gold its most disastrous setback of the season. Butler hopes sank to its lowest ebb as Dover took their series, winning the second game by a ten point ad- vantage. However, a 28-20 win inflicted upon Roxbury proved the start of a victory spurt that carried over the remaining six scheduled games. This rally enabled B. H. S. to break even in the seasons series with Pompton, Hacketts- town. and to administer beatings upon Roxbury and Boonton twice. A 52-56 loss to Ramsey High in the first round of the New jersey basketball tourna- ment ended the season. Although the '50 scluad didnt fare so very well in league competition. the groundwork was laid for a successful season this year. Butler has a very able coach for the golf team in Mr. Herling. l.ast year B, H. S. finished last in the league composed of Pomp- ton Lakes. llastside and Clentral High Schools. All through the winter months the four first string players journeyed weekly for practice to the Passaic County links. All matches are played on the Passaic County Golf course. The high school engaged Mr. Kniffen, professional golfer, to instruct golf aspirants. THE I9 0 BASEBALL A third consecutive Tri-County Championship and permanent attaining of that cup was the goal set-and achieved, by the '59 baseball team. The Butler High School diamond team compiled a record of seven games won, against four setbacks during their championship march. The season was highlighted by an amazing win over Pompton Lakes, a thorough beating ad- ministered upon Dover in the game that decided the championship, the superb pitching of Arthur Day, and finally, the consistent hard hitting of center- fielder Richard Assidio. The Bulldogs decisively downed Newton twice. Boon- ton also dropped a pair of games to Butler High Schoolg not, however, before a very close battle had ensued. Butler managed to win one of the two games played with Pompton Lakes and Dover. A no run-no hit effort by Ben Storms subdued Hackettstown. Hawthorne proved to be a thorne in Butler's side. winning their two contests. A poll conducted by the Morristown Record placed four Blue and Gold regulars on their all-star first team and two players on their second string nine. Those honored on the first team included jerry Crean, Ben Storms, Tex Randon, and Art Day. Richard Assidio and Dick Bishop secured second team berths. The entire team, with the exception of Gene Wyble, Jerry Crean, and john Bishop, have returned for 19-10, thus assuring an experienced, well- balanced nine for this season.
