DORIS HUXSTER DONALD WHETI-IAM KATHRYN SMITH SENIOR CLASS-PAST AND PRESENT HIRTY-ONE classes have been graduated from Butler High School. We, the class of l938, stand as the thirty-second and the largest class in the history of the school. Yet in size, we but follow the general pattern set by classes before usp each class since 1909 has been larger than the one preceding it. Although there was a public school in Butler as early as 1888, a high school class did not graduate until 1907. Included in this first class of three girls, was Florence Richards, now Mrs. I... L. Hanby, the mother of Mrs. Iohn Marshall, a present member of our faculty. The class of 1908 had but one graduate, Mr. Fred Norman: From then on the graduating class doubled at intervals in record time. In 1912, there were fifteen graduates: in 1918, thirty-three. The class of 1928 numbered sixty-three. This year a sen- ior class of a hundred and ninety-three makes individual appearance in our year book. Not on account of superior numbers but rather upon commencement innovations do we base our bid for special remembrance. Butler will see a class in cap and gown this year for the first time, and also for the first time will wit- ness a commencement out-of-doors. The grand- stand will serve as a platform for the class, and the football field will hold the spectators in the manner of an outdoor concert. This is a neces- sary move because the auditorium will no longer accommodate the familes and friends of all the graduates. Therefore with numbers we follow one pre- cedent and, in turn, set two others. - C ARVILLA ABRAMS Witty enough, ever willing to smile, Arvilla was a good sport all of the while. Girl Reserves l, 2. In the same year that Butler High was established, Mr. C. I. Howell, now presi- dent of the Board of Education, became princi- pal. Mr. Howell remained principal for ten years. In that time the enrollment had grown to 114. From 1912 to 1917 the number of pupils doubled. The years of high wages immediately following the World War took effect, and in 1917-18 enrollment fell off about 20622. However, from 1919 to 1926, the enrollment again doubled and there were over 400 pupils at- tending Butler. From 1902 to 1922, the entire school system numbered eleven rooms. With the 1922 addi- tion, we gained the auditorium, the gym and four new classrooms. Since 1930 scarcely a year has passed Without the taking over of one or more elementary school rooms in order to care for the ever-increasing enrollment: and, of course, this year's sixteen room addition will enlarge our high school to a far more efficient and comfortable capacity. These formative years are spoken of as the good old days by our parents and older friends. We marvel at the tales of hazings, of district rivalries, and of the days when only seniors could go out the front door. Yet today We do not envy the experiences of the good old days for we probably have some equally exciting stories of our own. Even with the building of Pompton Lakes High School, Butler's enrollment has steadily increased to the figure of 945 pupils who are attending school this year. The growth of each succeeding class, in number and in character, has been the largest contributing factor to the upward trend of secondary education at Butler. The first extra-curricular activity, the de- bating society, composed of four members, was organized in 1918. Our debating team was a member of the Rutger's lnterscholastic Debating League and participated in varsity debates with several surrounding schools. The debating team still prospers at Butler, but more emphasis is placed on interclass debates than in these early years. In 1920, a second activity was added to our extra-curricular schedule. This was an orchestra, which was composed of six mem- bers. Under the direction of Mrs. Eilenberger, this small group of musicians enjoyed several successful years. Until 1924 the debating team and the orchestra were the sole extra-curricular ac- tivities. ln this year, sufficient interest had been aroused in Morris County to establish a chapter of the Boys' Hi-Y at Butler. Mr. Rickman, as a B.1-l.S. student, was president of this or- ganization. The Girls' Hi-Y, which has later become the Girl Reserves, was organized in 1926. The Boys' Hi-Y first published The Maple Leaf , in 1929. One year later, it was turned over to the school and has been con- tinued as a school project ever since. The next year the Student Council was organized, and the Library Club came into existence in 1932. Since 1932 many new clubs have been formed until We have thirty pictured in this year's book. It is interesting to note that the social clubs have followed the service clubs in order of organization. Thus, interests of ever-widen- ing range have been responsible for the rapid growth of the activities program at Butler: and now our clubs offer an opportunity for all kinds of service and diversion. HE first departure from curricular work in Butler was the organization of athletic teams, a natural outgrowth of the instinct and desire for competition. The first varsity team was baseball, organized in 1908 just as soon as there were enough boys in the school to form a team. One year later the first basketball team came into existence. There were not enough upper- classmen to compose a satisfactory team so the squad was made up largely of freshmen. The first basketball game was played with the Bloomingdale Grammar School. Two years later in 1911, the football team was organized with Mr. Howell as coach. A nondescript assortment of old clothes served as uniforms for these early teams. For several years, the baseball and basketball teams went without a coach: it is asserted that the fellows knew too much about the game to make it either necessary or com- fortable for a coach. A few years later the teachers who knew something about the game took over the coaching duties. Although major varsity sports today are lim- ited to boys, it is of interest to note that for about fifteen years, until 1932, there was also a girls' basketball team. Minor sports-tennis, golf and, this spring, track-have also been added to our athletic program. The desire for wider participation in sports led to the organi- zation of interclass teams about ten years ago. During these years, interclass competition has taken a prominent part in the athletic growth of our school. Butler has become increasingly proud of its teams as they have grown in tech- nical knowledge and ideals of sportsmanship. VARSITY FOOTBALL VARSITY BASKETBALL Coach-MR. VAN HEUSEN Coach-MR. Although the class of '38 will never occupy its spacious interior, we are happy in the knowledge that perseverance has been rewarded, ambition fulfilled and the crowded condition relieved for perhaps an- other decade. Butler High School will embody when corn- pleted, facilities for art and music with rooms definitely planned for both, chemistry, biology, and physics laboratories arranged so as to place the emphasis on small groups: separate cooking and sewing rooms: a library twice as large as the present one, which already has one of the largest book turnovers in Morris County-all of which will give Butler one of the finest and most up-to-date schools in the vicin- ity. As seniors, we take particular pleasure in noting that there will be greater emphasis on personnel service, which is now doing a splen- did job in providing personal contacts with stu- dents leading to further education in many lines, as well as enlarged facilities for main- taining contact with the alumni, which we soon must join. For reluctantly but unavoidably we must undergo the numbing surgery of parting, not merely au rcvoir or auf Wiederselaen, but goodbye -goodbye to the memories, the associations, and the growing pains of four years, the last four years of childhood. For now the fresh- men are sophomores: the sophomores, juniors: the juniors are seniors: and we are-alumni.
