Administrators Mr. E. Bertrum Shaffer is the Assistant Princi- pal in Charge of Pupil Personnel. In this posi- tion he is a general assistant for specific assignments made by Dr. Moore. Supervising the teaching staff, coordinating instructional activities, and improving and developing co- curricular activities are duties of this assistant principal. He is directly concerned with pupil registration, assignment, promotion, and attendance. The intramural athletic program is also supervised by Mr. Shaffer. He receives and coordinates all requests for the use of the Butler High School building for school activities during non-school hours. Mr. Shaffer is often seen touring classes and activities trying to learn more about his primary con- cern, the students. Miss Esther Johnson Assistant Principal Mr. E. Bertrum Shaffer Assistant Principal Miss Esther Johnson is the Assistant Principal in Charge of Guidance Services. She is re- sponsible for coordinating all the guidance services, both among the counselors and with other administrators. Organization of the various testing programs the College Boards, the National Merit Scholarship Test, and schol- arship tests is another guidance duty perform- ed by Miss Johnson. She also is in charge of centralizing all financial aid information. Any decisions which are related to guidance matters rest with Miss Johnson. She also spends time in classroom visitations and with teachers. She arranges for all approved homebound instruction. Her main concern is seeing that the students are taking advantage of educational opportunities. 11

...Q Dr, Charles Moore Principal Dr. Samuel DeSimone is the Assistant Principal in charge of Supervision and Curriculum. He serves as a general assistant to the principal, and solves many special problems presented by students. He supervises the faculty and coordinates the educational curriculum. He leads the in- service growth of staff members. He is always trying to improve and develop the curriculum at Butler Senior High. Con- ducting cooperating research with other schools, selecting textbooks, and super- vising cooperative work in adiusting guidance are all efforts of this administrator to improve the curriculum. Dr. DeSimone realizes that learning occurs in an atmos- phere of proper planning. He does this detailed curriculum planning with enthu- siasm and interest. The students of Butler High School benefit from the encourage- ment and work of Dr. DeSimone. 10 Our . Dr. Charles J. Moore, principal of Butler Senior High School, is responsible for all phases of the high school program. Since 1957 he has earnestly carried out the duties of principal. As principal he assigns duties to the assistant principals, the teachers, and the office staff. He has general supervision of student discipline and is respon- sible for staff morale and for all permanent records. Directing the guidance program, preparing the master schedule, and interviewing prospective candidates for the teaching and clerical staff are also duties of Dr. Moore. He represents Butler Senior High on all matters of policy, function, or operation. To the students of BHS, Dr. Moore serves as a friend, to colleges and employers, he serves as an evaluator and leader. Dr. Samuel DeSimone Assistant Principal

Dr. Guy N. Harriger Superintendent Dr, William L. Cross Top Administrators Although Dr. Harriger, Dr. Cross, and Dr. Radaker are not often seen at Butler High, the efforts of these administra- tors are apparent here. The Superintendent of Butler Area Schools, Dr. Guy N. Harriger, acts as the chief executor for the Board of Education. He approves the employment of all personnel. The preparation of school budgets, the expenditure of funds, and the preparation of payrolls and vouchers are handled by Dr. Harriger. He carries a dual responsibility of a business and professional leader for this school system. The Director of Curriculum and Supervision is Dr. William L. Cross, who carries out special assignments made by Dr. Harriger. He is also the director of the student teaching program in Butler. He coordinates the curriculum for all grades and he selects textbooks, material, and equipment used in instruction. Dr. Leon D. Radaker serves as the School Psychologist. He deter- mines eligibility of first graders and approves home- bound instruction for disabled students. He makes per- sonality assessments for those who are involved in diffi- culties. Dr, Harriger, Dr. Cross, and Dr. Radaker all per- form special services for Butler Senior High. Dr. Leon D. Radaker Director of Curriculum and Supervision Psychologist
