THE MAGNET 1960 In 1888, high school pupils occupied the third Hoof of the Jefferson Street School. Classes were moved to the McKean Street School Annex in 1901 and to what is now known as the Junior High School in 1907 where there were four teachers and 134 pupils in grades nine through twelve. The doors of the present Senior High School building were opened for classes in 1917. During the last sixty years, the field of edu- cation has changed and broadened, and Butler High School has moved along with the times, providing a larger school, more and better equipment, broader curricula, and extensive extra-curricular activities. The year 1960 shows the present North Street Building housing 2164 pupils, grades ten through twelve, with seventy-seven teachers and three administrators to direct their work and activities. In fact, the ever-increasing high school growth and enrollment has necessitated the construction of a new and larger building which will be ready for classes in September. In the pages of the 1960 yearbook, the Magnet Staff has endeavored to portray the work, the scenes, and the traditions which the present student body will always associ- ate with the old red brick and its crowded interior. Top! Who tracked in the mud? Center: I wish 1 were in the game. Bottom: Lost in the shuffle.
