Here three boys of different faiths- Joseph Friedman, John Warman, Donald Ansman- clasp hands in fellowship. -VMZ 1 FOR ALL RACES Butler High pupils trace their ancestry to countries all over the world, but all are Americans, learning of their country, its customs, its privileges, its opportunities. FOR ALL WALKS OF LIFE Butler High pupils come from Butler City and nine other districts. All learn together that it is what one is, not who he is that counts. They come from homes of business men, teachers, ministers, in- dustrial workers, day laborers, professional men, Representing a few are: David Tacglc, construction, Jane Shumalcer, law and the courtg Steve Pavlosky, industryg Mary Burn, medicineg Cynthia Siljander, teachingg Walter Henriclcs, farmingg Herschel Segall, merchandising. The Torch of Learning Burns at Butler High To Train Us FOR INDUSTRY Chemistry, Physics, Electronics, Mathematics, Engineer- ing Drawing teach lnasic principles the worker must know if he enters industry. On a field trip to Armco, Arthur Balph is briefed on jobs by his father, james Balph, BHS '38. FOR BUSINESS FOR THE TRADES In Wood Work, Shop, Auto Mechanics, practical skills are learned which the students can apply to earning a living in a trade. Anthony Kovasky and Chester Dellon use shop tools and the power saw with care and precision. Typing, Bookkeeping, Office Practice, Co-Operative Training each provide learning and drill necessary for future stenographers. Carol Tritsch and Mary Jo Gibson check debit and credit columns for accuracy. FOR FUTURE HOMEMAKERS Whether she goes to college, teaches school, pounds a typewriter, clerks in ai store, every girl dreams of having a home and cooking for that dream man. BHS in a well equipped Home Economics course teaches her how. Gayle Deal and Nancy Natili collaborate on a pie. The Torch of Learning Burns FOR THOSE WHO DESIRE HIGHER LEARNING Through courses such as Chemistry, Physics, Economics, College English, Advanced Mathematics pupils are pre- pared to take college work and to be eligible for scholar' ships. In 1956-57 Butler High students won scholarships valued at over 581,000 So Pat Burns, Dennis Luclcey, Carrie Lee Neergaard are studying up for special schol- arship exams for 1958. FOR FUTURE COMMUNITY LEADERS As training for the future, the student body participates in many community projects, among them the annual Heart Drive. This year the teams under the direction of Student Council collected 53378.86 For the suc cessful effort Joe Friedman, Don Walter, Eleanor Glad den and Kaye Winters made careful plans with Mrs Slcrinalc, chairman. The Torch of Learning Burns TO TEACH principles of healthful living-At Butler High this is done through a well organized physical edu- cation and health curriculum and a broad intramural and extensive inter-scholastic sports program. Highlight of the year was the defeating of Ford City in basketball when the elated team carried coach Ifft from the Hoor amid cheers from the fans. TO TEACH social living-Through extra curricular ac- tivities, such as plays, after school dances, proms, com' mittee work, students make friends and learn to work together with courtesy. Diane Tray trains to be a graci- ous hostess as she serves punch to Gail Craddis and Chuck Hanks at the Senior Hop. How glad we were when the windows were finally installed. The Northwest Entrance takes on a diflcrcnt atmosphere in the fall. Leonard Sandloop breaks away to pick up some of the yards which helped Butler hold New Castle to a 6-6 tie and also made him the leading Tornado ground gainer of the season. . 1957 HIGHLIGHTS . BUTLER 21 FIFTH AVENUE 6 The Golden Tornado opened its undefeated season against a better-than-usual Fifth Avenue team. Monteleone scored the first TD of the season on a five-yard run. McConnell pro- vided a brilliant 60-yard punt return. BUTLER 19 ELLWOOD CITY 6 Ellwood City fumbles and a hard-hitting ground attack gave Butler its second win of the season on a rain-soaked field. Although the game was close-fought the first half, fine quarterbacking by Silvis led Butler to victory. BUTLER 32 FARRELL 15 Underdog Butler upset an undefeated Farrell team. Farber picked up a fumble and romped 48 yards for a TD. Fine line play like this kept the Night Raiders on their heels and gave the Tornado their third straight victory. BUTLER 14 HAR-BRACK 0 The Tornado, playing against a hard-hitting Har-Brack team, continued their perfect rec- ord, but not without a rough fight from the Tigers. McConnell, turning in his usual hne game, returned a punt 70 yards for a score. BUTLER 13 SHARON 13 Butler's four-game winning streak was brought to an end in a stalemate against Sharon. Fine playing was provided by the backheld but was not enough to offset the many fumbles and penalties. BUTLER 19 ROCHESTER 6 Playing against their biggest opponent of the season, Butler showed vast improvement over the Sharon game. Houston showed fine po- tential in his flrst starting role as quarterback. BUTLER 6 NEW CASTLE 6 The Tornado battled a strong New Castle eleven to a deadlock. A punt, blocked by Moses and recovered by Farber in the New Castle end zone, provided the only Butler score. BUTLER 20 .IOHNSTOWN 20 Behind by 20 points, Johnstown rallied to hand Butler its third tie. Two long runs by Pawk and McConnell and a pass to Saul provided the Tornado scores. Coach Emil Rosenzweig says he has one of the best track teams Butler High has ever had. There were returning letter- men in almost all departments. Walter and Snyder baclcboned the 100 and 220 yard dashes. Smith, Weist, Zotter, and Simpson held up the distance runs. In the hurdles, Farber, Sandloop, and Mc- Clean gave the thinclads some much- needed points. Supporting the three jumping events were Johnson, Shearer, Stanley, Sandloop, and Farber. The Tornado's weakness was in the three field events where the only returning letter- man was Glenn. Coach Rosenzweig built his track team around these thirteen re- turning lettermen. Student Council completed its fifth year with over a dozen major projects to its credit. The annual Leadership Workshop marked the beginning of a successful year for the Council. A junior Red Cross Chapter was organized after careful summer and fall planning. Application has been made for the 1959 foreign exchange student. Council repre- sented Butler High at a safety meeting at Slip- pery Rock. In the late fall, Council received word that Butler was to serve as second vice- president at the National Student Council Con- vention in St. Louis, Missouri. James Betres was elected by the student body to attend the confer- ence where he will serve as toastmaster. A suc- cessful school-wide drive netted 8191 to care for Butler High's adopted Korean child. An active awards system was approved and passed by the Council. According to the plan of the commit- Page Ninety-eight tee, a maximum of ten awards will be presented annually to members whose contribution to both the Council and to the clubs to which they be- long has been outstanding. The Student Council members and alternates again assisted in the Heart Drive as a community service project. With the opening of the school cafeteria, the Council turned its fund-raising efforts to oper- ating the cafeteria snack bar. The Butler High Band practiced diligently for the football games. Pre-school drill began one week before school started. At these practices the band was taught new drills such as H2000 A. Df, and Hollywood Storyf' In the last drill, mem- bers of the band acted as Hollywood movie stars. Barnum and Bailey Favorite, Dry Bonesf, and Beguine for Band are a few of the band,s songs which will be remembered. This year, the Butler High Band played at the Memorial Day Parade, Veterans, Day Parade, and the Safety Day Parade. In March, the members attended a con- cert by Raphiel Mendez at Westminster College. To obtain a music letter, band mem-bers must be in an instrumental music organization for three years and participate in an ensemble. DISTRICT CHOIR This year, the Midwestern District held its music festival at Farrell, Pennsylvania. Three hundred and seventy-five music students, representing five counties, participated in this annual event. Dr. John Raymond, from Lafayette College, was rhe guest conductor. Under his direction the chorus sang seventeen numbers. In one Spanish novelty song, a rhythm combo was used. Bob Kripowicz, a Butler junior, was awarded first place in the bass section. Bob Kripowicz won hrst place honors at the disiricr mu sic festival, Page One Hundred Eleven book. Each person Morlee Miller, yearbook editor, is busy sizing pictures. Early last year, the sixteen seniors and with Editor Morlee Miss Gertrude Reed yearbook staff composed of two junior apprentices met Miller and faculty adviser to begin work on the 1958 was given a certain section for which he would be held responsible. The theme was chosen and the layout was planned. Came September! And the real work began: planning make-up, requisitioning pictures, doing PUBLICATIONS Magnet Yearbook senior write-ups, and writing copy and captions. The Masquers is a new show group composed of the cast and crew members of the current musical show. A11 of the 160 students who participated in Seventeen became charter members of the Masquers. This group was organized under the guidance of William A. Lehnerd, faculty director of the annual musical shows. The name The Masquers was chosen following a school contest won by Joyce Bain. The nucleus of this group is the Show Board which is composed of the directors and manager of each year's production. The musical comedy is the most complex of the produc- tions done on our stage. It was felt that an organization of interested students and faculty mem- bers could give a sense of planning and direction to these shows that would improve the quality of the productions. This year at the meetings the devotions were conducted in Latin, followed by the Latin version of the Pledge of Allegiance by the entire club. Father Kenny from St. Fidelis Seminary was a guest speaker at one meetingg he spoke on the Lasting Values of Latinf, In Febru- ary, the club traveled to Pittsburgh to see the Latin Fair at Buhl Planetarium. The club often has guest speakers at their meetings during assembly periodsg they also have so- cial gatherings in the evenings. The club constitution states that anyone taking Ger- man is eligible to join the clubg at the end of the first semester, new members are ex- amined by the Board of Review to determine whether they will remain in the club. Page One Hundred Twenty-four sm The purpose of the Spanish Club is to arouse interest among the students for in- creasing knowledge of Spanish countries and to help students speak more fluent Spanish. Many members of the club communicated with students in Mexico and other Spanish- speaking countries. The Spanish Club meets the third Thursday of each month. This year it attempted to conduct the meet- ings in Spanish which was pleasant and sometimes very amusing. Each meeting con- sists of a business discussion followed by some kind of entertainment. To become a member one must be a Spanish student, and the president must be a second year student. The Spanish Club joined the other language clubs in having a dance in the spring. The purpose of the French Club is to familiarize members with France, French customs and life of the French people. The club meets during the first A assembly of each month, at which time they conduct a business meeting in French, a program pertaining to either French people or their language, and concluding with the entire club singing songs in French. To become a mem- ber of the French Club, a student must be en- rolled in French class or else have completed one year of French. In the latter part of the year, the club sent a CARE package abroad. All of the French students went together and bought a tape recorder for Miss Ruth Helm, the adviser for the club. They presented it to her at their Christmas party. The French Club presented members who had been in French Club for two years or more with French Club pins as an award for their work in the club. To be qualified for this award, a member could have no more than three absences from meetings of the French Club. Page One Hundred Twenty-six In order to become a member of the Future Nurses of America Club, a student must be interested in the world of medicine and have the desire to become a nurse. The club meets once a month during B assembly. During these meetings, the Future Nurses discuss business matters concerning the club, often films about different diseases and health are shown. Several times the group listened to lectures given by members of the medical or nursing professions. During the course of the year, the members made tours of different hospitals to help the girls de- cide What kind of school they might like to enter and to give them an opportunity to see nursing being practiced. Among the hos- pitals visited were Butler County Memorial Hospital and the Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. The adviser for the Future Nurses of America is Mrs. Paul Spina. The Future Teachers of America meets every other week during B assembly. The purpose of the club is to study and identify the qualities, traits, and aptitucles which are essential for successful teaching. Different teaching fields are studied. Nancy Scott was chosen vice-president of the Midwest- ern District of Future Teachers of America. An annual project is selling book covers, which have the name of our school printed on them. The FTA also has an informa- tion cleslc set up in the corridor at the front entrance to the auditorium. This year each member brought an attractively wrapped Christmas gift which was given to the Salva- tion Army. Traditionally, the seniors ob- served elementary teaching in grade schools in the spring. To be a member of the club one has to have satisfactory grades and satisfactory ratings from four teachers. The club advisers are Miss Esther Johnson and Mrs. Jane Kerr. The awarding of a beef calf, a dairy calf, and some swine to a worthy boy in the Future Farmers of America was one project under discussion dur- ing the year for the FFA. This club, which endeavors to train boys in the field of vocational agriculture, meets every other week during A assembly in Room lll at which time club activi- ties are discussed. One of the highlights of the club during the past year was the awarding of The Keystone Farmer Degree to George Spinne- webber. The Future Farmers of America feature a game feast, a square dance. and a summer trip every year. In the way of innovations. the club featured a father and son banquet this year. In February four members of the club each received fifty baby chicks from the Norris Hatchery in Cooperstown. After raising the chiclcs for eight weeks they were dressed and judged for the best meat bird in the Uchiclien of Tomorrowi' contest. Page One Hundred Thirty To promote interest in biology and to en- courage careers in related biological sciences is the purpose of the Caylor Club. Guest speakers visited the meetings, and club mem- bers often presented projects and viewed films. One ofthe annual projects of the Cay- lor Club is a field trip to a veterinarian. This year, club members also visited a radiologist at the Butler County Memorial Hospital where Dr. Smith conducted a tour through the research laboratories. This spring the group took a field trip to the Buhl Plane- tarium. In order to become an active mem- ber of the club, a student must have the recommendation of his or her Biology teach- er and the Board of Review. The pledge, upon acceptance, goes through a traditional initiation. Mr. Paul Caylor, for whom the club is named, is the adviser of the Caylor Club. To become a memher of the Geography Club a student must have completed one year of geography or else he taking the sub- ject now. Paul McDowell, vice-president of the cluh, is also vice-president of the Penn- sylvania Council of Junior Geographers. This year the club meets every other weelc and aften has visitors, who have traveled in many different countries. Among these was Robert Kamerer who told of his experience and impressions of his trip to Africa. Tra- ditionally the club takes a held trip to a science show and visits industries in or near Butler. Page One Hundred Thirty-two Some Women Were Tallcingv was a play presented by several members of the Thespi- an Club for an assembly program in Febru- ary. The Thespians also staged a contest play called 'lThe Valiantf' The purpose of the club is to establish and promote stand- ards of excellence in all phases of the dra- matic arts, they also try to create an active and intelligent interest in drama among the students in high school. Traditionally the club makes at least one trip to see a play or a musical show. The Thespians meet dur- ing alternate B assemblies. Each member of the club participated in at least one pro- gram at various meetings throughout the year. The troupe won the district contest in the Pennsylvania Music and Forensic League when they presented The Happy Journey. Mrs. John Seyler and Mr. Wil- liam Lehnerd are co-advisers for the Thespians. The purpose of the Model Club is to ac- quaint its members with aircraft and flying through the use of model airplanes. The group received weather maps from the United States Weather Bureau and mapped out imaginary courses on Navigation Maps of the Butler area. The club took Held trips to Greater-Pittsburgh Airport and the Butler Airfield. At a couple of meetings, they held a 'QRise Off Groundu contest in which the boys flew model airplanes. The Model Club meets every other B assembly in Room 314. Aeronautical problems and progress are discussed at meetings and plans made for field trips and contests. The only re- quirement to join the Model Club, which is composed of boys, is to have an interest in airplanes, aviation, or flying model aircraft. The faculty adviser for the club is Mr. John Eaton who teaches Aeronautics. Paul McDowell. Jack Reitan, and Walt Snyder check the mechanism of a model airplane to see if it is in flying condition. Page One Hundred Thirty-four The Librari-Annes endeavor to keep the service in the school library at a high stand- ard so that the student body and faculty will be served efficiently. This year the Librari- Annes sold stationery monogrammed with Butler High Schoolis insignia. In the spring the club visited the library at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh. At the end of the school year they plan to hold a banquet at which time awards will be presented to the mem- bers for their services. During the year the club collected magazines which illustrated American living, this collection was called Magazines for Friendshipf, The Librari- Annes meet every other Friday at noon in the library. Any library aide who works three days a week in the library automatical- ly becomes a member of the club. The adviser is Mrs. Elaine Daugherty. Some of the many projects which lcept the Palette Art Club busy this year were posters for various school organizations, scenery for the school productions, a trip to the Schol- astic Art Exhibit at Kaufmanns, and the annual art exhibit here at the school. One of the outstanding meetings this year in- cluded the Interclub Exhibit, where each student exhibited some worlc that he had done at home. The turnout for the exhibit this vear was the greatest since the club was organized. To become a member of the club, one l11LlSt have had at least one year of high school art, maintained a B average. and be accepted by the other members of the club. The purpose of the club is to give the outstanding art student additional op- portunity for art experiences and to do art work for the school. The club adviser is Mr. E. Bertrum Shaffer. The main pur- pose of the club is to provide ushers for school functions. The club meets the sec- ond Tuesday of each month, after school, at which time ushers are secured for future events and are also given pointers on how to be better ushers. In order to join the Ushers Club, one l11uSt have good scholastic stand- ing, he must give good reasons for desiring membership. Prospective members are in- terviewed. If a member of the club is ab- sent from meetings three times during the school year, he is automatically dropped from membership. Organ When students are selected to study organ, they automatically become members of the Organ Guild. The club usually meets on the last Thurs- day of every month. Some of the purposes of the club are to advance the cause of worthy religious music, raise the standards of efficiency of organ- ists and choirmasters, and provide members with opportunities for meeting and discussing profes- sional topics. The club members are valuable to the school when assemblies are presented, for eve- ning entertainment, and when dinner music is required. They are of value to churches as re- placements or substitutes for organists who may be retiring or cannot play because of illness. The Guild also gives a series of organ recitals every year. Members also participate in an organ con- test in Pittsburgh. The adviser for the club is Mr. Lamont D. Crape who is the organ teacher in Butler High School. These students go to school in the morning and work in the after- noon. The club tries to provide social activities to make up for the school functions members miss because of their jobs. Something new in the club this year was taking pictures of each student at the place where he worked. The DeCo Club strives to bring out leadership qualities and to give the students an opportunity to take part in extra curricular activi- ties.
