A BAND The music department of the Butler Senior High School includes instrumental and vocal instruction. There are two bands, an A Band, which is a marching and concert unit, and a B Band, which serves as a preparatory band. A high school orchestra and numerous en- sembles are also included in the instrumental program, The bands and the orchestra are under the direction of Don Bishop Gibson. The vocal groups consist of four choirs, Con- cert Choir, A Cappella Choir, lunior Choir and Girls Glee Club. ln addition there are other small ensembles. Dr. H. Richard Dry- den is in charge of the vocal music. Organ lessons are given to students who have passed a proficiency test on the piano. This organ instruction is given by L. D. Crape. During the year, the music instructors were assisted by student music teachers from ln- diana State Teachers College. Let's take a look at some of the music organizations in the school. Pagr Eighty-right One week before school started the march- ing unit of A Band was practicing in Pullman Park in preparation for the first football game. This group is composed of eighty members. The orchestra played in two assemblies during the year, and in May they presented the annual Spring Concert. One of the rising music organizations in the high school is the B Band composed of twenf ty-five members. The students in B Band constantly prepare themselves to become members of the A Band by practicing scales and mastering the rhythms. Throughout the year, the B Band had many melodic pieces to play, such as Light Cavalry and Deep River Rhapsody. Bob Willison was the stu- dent director. Martha Kiester was the secre- tary, and Peter Weaver was the librarian. The B Band appeared in the Spring Concert. ORGAN STUDENTS Twenty-one senior high students received organ lessons this year from L. D. Crape. In addition to playing for assemblies, concerts and graduation exercises, the organists pre' sented three recitals. These recitals were given during the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter seasons with each student play- ing in at least one of the recitals. The organ- ists for the years are selected on a competi' tive basis, by taking an examination on the piano early in the year. 1 1 . 1 . , 1l111111111'1111111111115111111111111 1111111lyf111111'1110111f 1111111 1141111 11111 111111131 111111 fl1N111111'k'1K1SSQxS. LATIN CLUB Labor Gmnia Vincet, Work Conquers All, is the motto of the Latin Club. The purpose of Latin Club is to give each member a better background of the Latin language and of Roman history. There are about fifty mem- bers in the club who have completed two years of Latin or are in their second year of Latin. The club meets the first Wednesday of each month at noon for a business meeting and the third Thursday evening of each month for a social program. During the year the members studied the Roman calendar and the way in which it was developed. They also studied the different Roman gods and goddesses. At Christmas, the club program consisted of singing Christmas carols and telling stories in Latin. ln March, the group read about the Um' lluntirml T4lL'I'7lfy-fiflllf assassination of Iulius Caesar. Each month the club studies about an event which hap- pened in Roman history about that same time. The members also give book reviews on Roman history and background. With the money collected from club dues the club bought Latin song books to use at their meetings. ln order for the Latin club to op- erate more efficiently the following commit- tees were appointed: program, publicity, project, social, finance, membership, and transportation. Each committee takes a turn in presenting a program and in planning the social hour of a meeting. Because of so much usage, the furniture and the floor became quite worn. During the first few weeks of school, pounding could be heard echoing through the halls as the auditorium was given a face lifting. The old brown wooden seats were removed and new coral-colored seats replaced them. The floor was laid with rubber tile, black under the seats and grey in the aisles. Many a person was surprised, when rising from his seat, to find that it carrie up with him. The seats automatically go into place, giving a neater appearance to the auditorium. Om' of Mi. Red Warning lights flash as external control lines fall away from the glistening, needle-point nose. The towering three-stage rocket shudders. Dust, blasted into rolling clouds by a million pounds of fiery thrust, momen- tarily cloaks rocket and launching tower. Ascending slowly, majestically, the rocket noses above the dust cloud. Temporary destina- tion-a mathematically-fixed orbit in the bleak nothingness of outer space . . . more than 300 miles above the earth's surface! Sometime between Iuly, 1957, and December, 1958, man will thus launch the first expendable earth satellite and a new era-the Space Age. ' The attempt to conquer space is significant of the many technological advances made recently and soon to come. These advances have created many op- portunities for young people. While entrance into some of these new fields requires extensive technical training, many useful, interesting allied occupa- tions are available to graduating high school seniors. Look these opportunities over carefully, set a goal and then determine what you must do to reach it. And while you're looking things over, find out what the businesses and industries of Butler County have to offer you. Like other Butler County young people, you'll discover many opportunities are right here at home. ir Butler County Offices MII Nl' IB ll dl lull member federal deposit insurance corporation - member federal reserve system One Hundred Fzfly mn: Goodbye Seniors and Happy Futures Unlimited PRINTING: The Eagle Printery, Inc., Butler Penna ENGRAVING: Iahn and Ollier Company, Chicago III COVERS: Kurtz Brothers, Clearfield, Penna.
