I Butler Area Joint Senior High School Butler, Pennsylvania Senior Issue Volume 52 May, 1953 FOREWORD Many believe the age of chivalry is gone forever, that the knight on his prancing steed belongs to days of yore, the knight who swore allegiance to his God and to his king, who vowed to live life fully and richly, to reverence women, to be kind and courteous, and to ride abroad redressing human wrong. But chivalry still exists; its principles are still taught today. True, the scene has changed from the castle to the schoolroom, but the modern knight is still drilled in polite manners and courtesy; he acquires the knowledge necessary to live effectively in the modern world; he lays up cultural knowledge and skills which enrich his daily living. The gym, the football field, the basketball floor have replaced the jousting and tourney areas; but the boys still glory in contests of skill and bravery, and their fair ladies still watch with breathless awe and vocal approval. Modern youth through religious affiliations (YMCA, Y-TEENS, and church), swear allegiance to their God. As participants in community and civic activities, they are trained in good citizenship and loyalty to their country. They still ride abroad redressing human wrong. Aye, even if it means giving life itself in Korea or some other foreign field. Come, joufney through the pages of the 1953 Magnet. Scenes from our castle include: The northwest entrance The front entrance The front stairway 6 The second floor hall and stairway While students and teachers took their vacations last summer, the auditorium was brightened with a new coat of paint. 7 On warm days students sun themselves upon the northeast walls of our school. On either side of the center auditorium doors, there are plaques commemorating former Superintendent John A. Gibson and former Principal Vernon K. Irvine. 8 Sunlight through the gym windows. ADMINISTRATION Dr. John D. Anderson JOHN D. ANDERSON Superintendent of Butler Schools Superintendent of Butler City Schools, John D. Anderson has his office in the Senior High School Building. From his office, the school system is run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. The files in his office contain the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Education from 1862 to the present, budget records, birth certificates and records of the school taxes. Employment certificates are also issued from his office. Checking supplies, providing information for selecting employees, helping select personnel to fill teaching positions in the city and carrying out policies adopted by the Board of Education are just a few of his duties. Dr. Anderson also finds time to take an active part in community activities. Like barons of old WILLIAM T. BEAN Principal of Butler Senior High School Dr. William T. Bean is principal of Butler Senior High School and determines most of the details of the high school system. Dr. Bean arranges the master schedule, plans general programs of the school and provides permanent record cards, which are kept on file, for the students. With the teachers, he helps design courses of study, teaching plans and procedures to be used in classrooms. He is familiar to students who go to him for advice. To everyone, he is friendly, kind and a good conversationalist. Dr. Bean toured Europe two years ago and upon his return showed slides of Europe and talked about conditions there since World War II. 12 Dr. William T. Bean ADMINISTRATION CHARLES I. MOORE Assistant Principal of Butler Senior High School Charles J. Moore is assistant principal of Butler Senior High School and aids Dr. Bean in handling some of the details of the school. Mr. Moore, as one of the directors of the attendance office, also takes care of students who are tardy or absent for illegal reasons. Among his duties are making schedules and home room assignments for the new students and acquainting new students with the systems and methods of Butler High School. Eefore he became assistant principal, Mr. Moore taught world history and social sciences in the high school. they oversee our castle. Director of Curriculum of Butler Senior High School Director of curriculum and supervision in the secondary schools is the job of Dr. Guy N. Harriger, who operates from his office in the Senior High School. Among his duties is the planning of summer school classes and new courses. He is responsible for curriculum improvement and enrichment in secondary schools. He recommends new textbooks for use in the school. Dr. Harriger also finds time to attend state and national educational conferences. He is active in the community affairs and has served as president of Kiwanis Club during this year. GUY N. In this modern day and age, however, it is sent into the homes of the populus via the medium of radio and the newspaper. The WISR high school newscast is a complete coverage of school news and comments, and The Morning Alter over WBUT is a disc-jockey program; both broadcast on Saturday morning. The students volunteered their time so that the needed information could be collected. Day by day the modern knights at Fred Kummer, senior class president, helps unpack the Christmas cards which were sold to make money to increase the senior treasury. 138 Juniors exercise their interior decorating ability in readying the gymnasium for the Junior Hop, one of the most important social events of the year. Jim Clark and Pat Sweeny congratulate Joyce Milsom and Fred Kummer, Princess and Prince of the Senior Hop. 139 Doing their share in the get-out-the-vote campaign, these girls are typing the reports brought in by the canvassers. By the look on his face, Jim Brown has just convinced another citizen that everyone should vote. On September 9, one of the most extensive drives ever attempted by a high school group was put into motion. Over 1200 students met the citizens of Butler county to sell them the idea of voting. The students made a record of the name, address, and the voting precinct of the eligible but non-regislered citizens whom they visited. 140 This is not a Ladies Convention, just Butler High School girls eating lunch in the balcony of the gymnasium. This scene takes place on a smaller scale in CW, CE and 316. A familiar scene around school, Dec Dryden joking with one of his former pupils. We often wonder how the knight carried his lunch when he went out to kill a dragon or rescue maidens in distress. We bet he didn't carry it in a paper sack, the most popular way in Butler High. As the knights of old faithfully returned to the round table, the graduates of Butler High come back and talk over the past and present with their former teachers. 141 Many fingers make light work and so, each Christmas, the home making department welcomes the kindergarten children to help make cookies. Every year Butler High School students co-operate with the TB campaign. Four boys wait patiently to have their chests X-rayed. 142 Traditionally every Christmas season a few members of the band and orchestra, shivering on the roof of the school, play well-known Yuletide carols which are heard in the streets below. Activities in King Arthur's court may have been exciting but they could not have been so varied as those which take place within or outside the walls of the Butler High castle. There is an activity for every taste and ability. Vocal and instrumental groups are formed for musical minded students. For those who like dramatics and the stage, plays, variety shows, and operettas are presented with only student participants. 144 For sports fans there are intramural and inter-scholastic sports which are as enjoyable to watch as they are to play. Clubs are formed particularly with members of certain classes. For instance the FHA is for those girls taking Home Making course; the boys who take Vocational Agriculture may belong to the FFA. These are only a few of the activities which help to give young knights and maidens of Butler a start in their chosen career. Dr. Bean congratulates Marion Mabel Good at the local FHA convention. Marion is treasurer of the National FHA and resides in this district. A Cappella Choir members are measured for robes, to be at their best in musical festivities. 145 The DeCo Club made up of business administration students holds luncheons and breakfasts every six weeks at a local hotel. The Concert Choir enjoys a few minutes cf relaxation as they view photographs of last year's choir tours. 146 Several students view the Japanese art exhibit which was sent in exchange for a display made by Butler High artists. Dancing to the rhythm of the Chili Band at an after-school dance, these students find the gym the setting for boy meet girl romances. 147 A. scene shortly before noon every other Friday as homeroom representatives gather in front of Mr. Palmer's office to get their share of Magnets for distribution. BHS teachers celebrate the coming Christmas vacation by having a faculty tea in the home making room. Aren't they pleased! 148 Happy Birthday! Ronnie LaMotte passes out the birthday cake his mother baked just for his homeroom birthday party. Pleasures of the castle are eating and drinking. The line forms to the right even though this fountain doesn’t furnish cokes but ice cold water.
