We hope that like Old King Cole, youive been a merry old soul for the greater part of this time and that you'll have many pleasant memories that will shine out like the 'Qlittle starn that twinkled up above the world so high. Now, instead of four-and-twenty blackbirds leaving a pie, four hundred eighty seniors are about to leave high school for the last time. So that you'll remember The man who was going to St. Ives, and the students who are going to their life,s workg The old woman who had so many children she Clidn,t know what to do, and the senior classes that were bulging full, Little Tom Tucker' who sang for his supper, and the time put in on homework so we'd have good grades, Little Jack Horner who was so pleased with himself, And the glow of pride we'll feel when we march down the aisle to Pomp and Circumstancev, we have chosen nursery rhymes as the theme of the Senior Magnet of 1952 with the hope that just as the haunting lines of Mother Goose have lingered in your mind, so as you turn the pages of this book, now and in years to come, familiar times and faces will live for you again. ANDERSON SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS To the Members of the Senior Class: When good King Arthur ruled his land, To the Members of the Class of June, 1952: Nursery Rhymes, the theme of your final publication regarding school experiences, completes the span of learning from the printed word. These poems take you back to early learning at your mother's knee. The rhymes, written in many languages, have been a source of great enjoyment. They bring back a flood of happy recollections because they were learned in early childhood in an environment of tenderness and affection. They were taught by loving and adoring parents who looked upon their children with hopeful anticipation as their second chance in life. The interest of the school staff in your achievements and progress will not terminate upon your departure from high school. Our best wishes go with you. Keep well. May you prove to be responsible citizens, and may you enjoy the success earned by those who make proper use of their talents. Sincerely yours, John D. Anderson America has at its fingertips some of the world,s great- est literature. Included in this great body of writing are the fables, the nursery rhymes, and the stories of mythology. As a friend of mine once told me, If you would know the national mind of Greece, you must know Greek mythology? The same can be said for any country. If you wish to really know it, look first at its literature. In America the nursery rhymes and stories are a very important part of our heritage, but more important, I believe, is the fact that these stories represent a por- trait of American character in miniature. Analyze them if you will and you will hnd that in every case, ugoodn triumphs over badvg uhonestyn, virtue , and kind- ness always succeed and negative characters are always defeated. As graduates of this great school, I sincerely trust that your experiences here have helped to mold a positive character for you and that the verities of life will for- ever be a part of you. Sincerely yours, William T. Bean DR. WILLIAM T. BEAN PRINCIPAL T-welfvc He was a goodly king. Dear Graduates of 1952: Dickory, dickory, dock, I was the keeper of the clock, I tried my best to keep you on timeg but that is all over now you see, for as far as high school is concerned-you are free. You face new problems of life which will tax your ingenuity to solve. Like the Old Woman in the Shoe , you will think you have so many of these, you won't know what to do. But, an early philosopher once said, Change what you can, and endure what you mustf' With this as a guide, I am certain you can be a great success in your life to come. Remember the cow accom lished uite a feat when it . , P q 1 jumped over the moon. When you meet a seemingly impassible obstacle, go to work on it, don't give up, and in time you will surpass it. CHARLES J. MOORE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL To the Seniors of 1952: The Nursery Rhymes we sing and recite are varied and many. Most of the rhymes had their origin in the problems of the day, stories or legends of the day, plans for the future, reflections of the past, and some were designed merely to please and be pleasant. Using this theme for the 1952 Magnet reflects the ef- forts of this class to perpetuate the best of the high school memories and the fine tradition of our school. On the printed page of this annual there appears a record of the past, the present, and a reflection of the future. In the years ahead the Magnet, like the Nurs- ery Rhymes, will bring to all of us many pleasant recol- lections of the years in Butler Area Joint Senior High School. The senior class, unlike the ten o'clock scholar, has worked long and well. To the class goes our very best Sincerely yours, Charles Moore wishes. Sincerely yours, Guy N. Harriger Thirtrrn DR. GUY N. In Memoriam TO GAYLE This boy, a stream of sunshine, which flowed for but a while, Warmly touching every heart 'til lifels departing mile. On this day, though he be gone, one solace we may find, His memory lives and always will, for he left smiles behind. OLD MOTHER GOOSE Old Mother Goose, when she wanted to wander, Would ride through the air on a very fine gander. Mother Goose had a house, ,twas built in the wood, Where an owl at the door for sentinel stood. This is her son Jack, a plain-looking lad, He is not very good, nor yet very bad. She sent him to market-a live goose he bought. Here, mother, says he. It will not go for naught. jack's goose and her gander grew very fond, They'd both eat together, or swim in one pond. Jack found one fine morning, as I have been told, His goose had laid him an egg of pure gold. Jack rode to his mother, the news for to tell, She called him a good boy and said it was well. jack sold his gold egg to a rascally knave, Not half of its value to poor Jack he gave. Then Jack went a-courting a lady so gay, As fair as the lily, and sweet as the May. The knave and the squire came up at his back, And began to belabor the sides of poor jack. And then the gold egg was thrown into the sea, When jack he jumped in, and got it back pre- sently. The knave got the goose, which he vowed he would kill, Resolving at once his pockets to fill. jack's mother came in, and caught the goose soon, And mounting its back, flew up to the moon. Fo fly-ffur NEW MOTHER GOOSE New Mother Goose when she choses to roam Jumps into her rocket and speeds toward home. Mother Goose has a house, 'tis built of plastic And the curtains at the windows are finest elastic. New Mother Goose differs quite from the old, Shels more time for leisure and pleasures untold. Her dishwasher saves her from dishpan hands, Time to lie on the beach and enjoy the sands. She sent her son Jack, a good-looking lad, To old Butler High so heid learn to add. His first trip home, his report card he brought. What a reward for the knowledge he sought! Jack was a good lad and tried his best, But he thought study hall a time for rest. So when shouts were made about breaking a rule, New Mother Goose came up to the school. The principal explained Jack was there for knowl- edge So that someday he could enter a well-known college And perhaps be a doctor, a lawyer, or clerk, For, after all, fair Jack was no jerk! So now Mother Goose burns the midnight oil Helping young Jack with his homework to toil, Her days of enjoyment and relaxation Must end ,til young Jack has his graduation. So, Jack and Jill, take a note from this rhyme And thank your parents all of the time. REVIEW OF FOOTBALL During the 1951 football campaign, the Golden Tornado, coached by A. Gerald Capezzuti, en- tered a record of 5 wins, 3 losses and one tie. The Tornado played a fine season having a slight edge in all matters but pass completion and yards gained through passing. BUTLER 15' - KITTANNING 0 The Tornado opened the season against the Kittanning Wildcats. The first score was a safety made by William Bowser when he blocked a Wildcat punt in the first half. Scoring the two touchdowns were Tom Chuba and William E. Bowser respectively. BUTLER 25 - FORD CITY 12 Traveling to Ford City, the Tornado entered another win on the books. Ford City tallied hrstg but the Tornados bounced back with scoring honors going to Chuba, W. Bowser, Dittmer, and W. E. Bowser with an assist by the passing quarterback Jim Pappas. BUTLER 7 - GROVE CITY 13 Heartbreak to the Butler pigskiners was caused by the Grove City Eagles. In the last minutes of play the Tornado, playing its heart out, came within a yard of the enemy goal line only to be stopped by a determined Eagle line. Eiyhly-four Row 1: Manuel, Bell, William E. SEASON 1951-1952 BUTLER 7 - HAR-BRACK 14 Both the Tornado and Tigers scored through the effective use of lucky breaks in the second quar- ter. Cautious strategy dictated the game until the final five minutes, when a Tiger pass, although miss- ing its intended receiver, flopped into the hands of a surprised Har-Brack substitute who galloped across But1er,s goal. BUTLER 0 - BEAVER FALLS 7 The entire game was a see-saw battle until the third quarter when Cron, ofthe Tigers, went over his own left end to spell the Tornado's second defeat. BUTLER 0 - VANDERGRIFT 0 The next contest pitted two foes who were evenly matched as is proved by the stalemate. BUTLER 20 - MOUNT LEBANON 0 For the last home game, the Golden Tornado swamped the Blue Devils with a new Butler line-up which put Jim Pappas at end and Fred Kummer at quarterback, Bowser scored first on a 36-yard run. The rest of the scores came on passes. BUTLER 20 - PENN TOWNSHIP 7 The last game was played on a cold snow-swept Penn Township field. The Tornados, sparked by William Bowser and Joe Wiest, trounced the Allegheny Countians. One day, a Buddhist priest told A1 Hafed about fabulously beau- tiful diamonds which were buried in the earth's surface. A1 Hafed became discontented, thinking how immensely wealthy he could be if he could find those diamonds. Finally he sold his farm, collected his money and set off on a search for diamonds. He travelled the world over, spent all his money, and died in poverty in a far-away land. Years later, the richest diamond mine in the world was discovered right on Al- Hafed's own farm-the famous Golconda mine, containing literally uacres of diamonds.
