Mar Business Manager ., Charl yL Ofte DR. JOHN D. ANDERSON Superintendent of Butler City Schools Dear Dr. Anderson, In the years to come, there will be much of our school life which we will forget, but as long as we live, there will be one person whom we shall never forget, our Superintendent of Schools. Ever since the first day we entered these doors as bewildered sophomores, you have always been ready with a helping hand. In many high schools the student body looks upon the chief administrator as some sort of dictator. This is certainly not true here in Butler high. You have long been regarded as an understanding friend as well as a competent administrative officer. No matter What our PrOlDlelTlS, Whether large or Srflall, as a class or EIS lI1dlVid.llalS, YOU were I1eVer COO bL1Sy to hear LIS and offer a word of advice. YOl1r quiet, humble, gentlerflarlly rnanller l'laS served as an eXCelleI'lt example for all of US to follow. Therefore, it is with a great deal of pride that we dedicate this our 1951 Nlagnet to you, Dr. Anderson. Sincerely, The Senior Class Dr. Anderson prepares to start his day's work. 4 7 e e are 7lze 7-lungs we want 70 FOREWORD Remember the time we . . . , Wasn't that funny?,,, Oh, how we used to . . . U, That surely was a good class, Remember the girl who . . . . So we reminisce whenever we get together. Realizing that the graduating class of June 1951 will soon be away from active school life, the staff of the yearbook has attempted to present in the pages of the 1951 Magnet scenes, people, and events that have made school days memorable. May the following pages serve as an index to the big and little moments of your High School career . . . big moments when the Golden Tornado rolled to an undefeated season and the championship, little moments when you forgot your homework. Days when you walked on air perhaps because you were elected sec- retary of homeroom, accepted for a part in the play, won the intra- mural game, or maybe just had all your work done and knew the answers. Whatever they brought, they were golden days to be remem- bered with pleasure. As you look through these pages at the picture of a friend, the rival you tormented in English, or the teacher on whose seat you placed a tack, may your memories bring you only smiles. f eWlZl44lJ2'Z. l 7-lie P ace The auditorium the halls the t ' h , , sairways, t e main entrance, the class rooms, the new drinking fountains, games in the gym-all these will be among our fondest memories . . . page 8-15 Tlne people The members of the administration and faculty, the office staff, our senior classmates and the underclassmen our home ff' . room o icers-these are the friends we have made in Butler High . . . page 16-69 The Work Solving algebra and trig problems, chemistr e ' y xperiments, that English theme, translating Latin and French, dates in h' k' ' istory, ma ing a book case or a dress-this was work to remember . . . a e 70-85 P S 7-lie aflzlefics The champion football squad, the roaring fans exciting basket- 7 ball games, swimming contests, spring track and golf, girls, volleyball, bowling and basketball-these are our memories of athetics , . . page 86-101 7-lie Cixffzas Band, orchestra, choir tours, after-school dances Magnet ut- , , P ting on plays, variety shows, assemblies, debating, parties, the big snow-these extra activities helped make school fun . , . page 102-144 The Place fi? we fzememlvefz flne Place TI-IE FRONT ENTRANCE 'nw place Enter the front stairs, check the time with the clock, admire the fine iron work, climb the stairs to enter the front hall of the second floor. These rafters re-echo the shouts of the cheerleaders and students, the spirited music of the band at the thrilling games as well as the melodious music furnished for the after-school dances. THE GYM BALCONY BALCONY OF AUDITORIUM SIDE STAIRWAY Students sit here for assemblies, to see sports letters awarded to many friends. Practice hours will be long remembered. Seniors will remember that here they received their diplomas and participated in commencement activities. Up these newly rubber-surfaced stairs, members of the faculty and students amble to the as- sured quietness of the library, the hustle and bustle of the chemistry lab, and to various other classes! TI-IE SHOP THE HOMEMAKING ROOM The attractive homemalcing room with its soft gray carpet and colorful accessories reminds us of lectures in family living, deli- cious hunger-inspiring odors and those mysterious faculty get-to- gethers. Shop brings hack memories of the first crookedly driven nail, learning to run the power saw, Mr. Eldridge's genial smile, and the satisfaction of that coffee table we made for Mother, the pipe rack for Dad or the sewing cabinet for Aunt Suzie. CORNER OF TI-IE LIBRARY Mind how we used to try to meet our clates in the library. We made friends of books, learned to use reference material - oh yes, even learned about courtesy fsee title of boolcj. Remember the clicking keys, the whirling mimeographg how proud we were when permitted to use the vari-typer or electric type- writer. OFFICE PRACTICE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE Why does Mr. Moore want me, I haven,t done a thing. Scene of private conferences, heart-to- heart talks, source of informa- tion and kindly advice, deserved reprimancl, care of the school activities. No, you'll never forget the office. Can I use the telephone?,' Did Mother call me? Are you one of the helpers who learned a tradeg we mean to run the switchboard or errands-you know, to get through the halls during class- time without a pass. SWITCHBOARD Cl Q , s i Q., - 1 SHOP I-IOMEMAKING 1 I5 My lancll Look at this full refrig- erator. We all probably wish that ours was stocked like that. Have a glass of milk, girls! Of course there are stoves and wash- ing machines and other such cle- vices in this well equipped kit- chen area. Get it straight, boys! Remember how carefully the boards were chosen, cut, and put together for that special bit of furniture. Re- member when John got the feet on the top. Uh, that was just a rumor. Qnbeason out gupefzinfendenf, Dr. John D. Anderson, superintendent of Butler City Schools, has his office located in the Senior High School building. From here, he and his assistants keep the school system running smoothly and efficiently. Within his files are records of the city school budget, school taxes, and birth certificates. Students desiring working papers acquire them through the superinten- dent,s office. One of Dr. Anderson's biggest tasks is to assist the Board of Education in the selection of per- sonnel to fill the teaching positions for both the sec- ondary and elementary schools. He provides inform- ation needed in selecting employees, both professional and nonprofessional, to the board members and carries out the policies adopted by the Board of Education. In addition he is responsible for seeing that the various phases of the school program are conducted in ac- cordance with the requirements of the School Code. Dr. Anderson is active in community affairs, and he feels that one of his greatest responsibilities is inter- preting the school program to the public. JOHN D. ANDERSON Mimeograph copies, letters, books, and general office work leave ne'er an idle moment in the superintendents office, as Miss Moore, Miss McGuire, and Miss Grossi can testify. 19 WILLIAM T. BEAN Di. Kean out pfzincipal, Dr. Williain T. Bean, Principal of Butler Senior High School, is now on leave of absence from his duties. He was requested by Harding College of Searcy, Arkansas, to undertake a trip through Europe to study the conditions in the educational systems there and to observe the impact of socialism and communism upon the children and teachers. Dr. Bean left Butler by plane last December and plans to return in early June. He has been a speaker at the American University in Athens and a guest teacher at che Sorbonne University in Paris. His letters have described the countries he has visited and the people he has met, as well as the educational systems. Dr. Bean,s usual duties include arranging a master schedule, planning school programs, providing permanent records and handling discipli- nary problems. Shown working in the principal,s office are Miss Marilyn Kulick and Miss Marian McElroy. In this office the students' schedules and school records are kept available. I Z 0 7711. movie and Dt. Hafuzigefz CHARLES J. MOORE Charles Moore, former social science teacher, as- sumed the position of assistant principal this year. All tardy or late students must present their excuses to him, and he decides if these are acceptable. Attendance clerk Mrs. Mildred Gates and attendance officer Mrs. Ada Wick help him to maintain a fine attendance record. This year his position has been made a twelve month's job. The additional duty of being treasurer of the high school activities fund, which means that all money for student activities must be checked by him, has been given to him. Some of his other duties are sending statistical reports on attendance to Harris- burg, making home room and schedule assignments for new students, and supervising the formation of new clubs in the school. Mr. Moore is at present taking a course at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Guy N. Harriger, Director of Curriculum and Supervision in Secondary Schools, assumed additional duties this year in becoming acting principalduring Dr. Bean's absence. As such he is not only responsible for his usual work, curriculum improvement and en- richment in secondary schools, but also for the admin- istration of senior high school. Summer school super- vision, the organization of new courses and selecting new textbooks are some of the many things with which his time is occupied. Dr. Harrig'r is a member of the Planning Commission of the Pennsylvania State Education Association, a group which consists of dis- tinguished educators, and he is a state delegate of this organization to the National Convention. In addition, he claims membership in several other educational so- cieties. On Saturdays, Dr. Harriger also teaches a graduate course in education at Westminster College. 21 GUY N. A bi-weekly newspaper replaced the news magazine that all Butlerites knew so well. Editor-in-chief and managing editor Mary Lee Hoovler, copy editor Patricia Thompson, news editors Mary -Io Koch and Ruth Starr, feature editor Nancy Cook, sports editors Phil Crowe and Helen Colley, and make-up editor Georgeann Whitehill and a staff of 46 reporters, 8 members of the business staff, Z photographers, and 13 typists were all kept lousy getting news ready by deadline time. The converted Magnet contains more news fea- tures and sports than the old news-magazine. As an aded extra, the pictoral Roto magazine, was given out each month along with an editon of the Magnet.
