To the forty-niners of one hundred years ago, it lay in the deep mountain gulches, in the hidden pockets, and in the rushing mountain streams of Cali- fornia. To the forty-niners of today at Butler Senior High School, it lies in the treasury of books, in memories of victory and defeat, in the inspiration of teachers, in the Wealth of friendships, and in the give and take of the routine of everyday school life. In 1849, the pioneers rushed to the gold territory by every method of transportation that was known. They crowded their furniture into covered Wag- ons or flatboats, strapped their personal belongings on pack horses, and started the long trek to California. There they dug and panned for the glittering gold from the lofty heights of the Sierras to the green rolling plains bordering the Pacific. Vigilantes kept order at the rip-roaring celebrations every Saturday night and punished any claim-jumper. Gold was plentiful, there was money to burn, and signs proclaiming eggs-five dollars a dozen Were common. Today's forty-niners dig for their treasure in the square, cream-colored rooms of Butler Senior High. They come to school every morning in modern streamlined cars, in old jalopies that look a century old, on bicycles which may even be equipped with a radio, and by foot. Whether it is in the green coast plains and snow topped mountains of California or in the friendly classrooms of high school, gold is where you find itl ..f' frass-
