Who conducts his classes with such vitality that they highlight each day . . . Who, through his high ideals and faith in us, has helped us to become better students and, even more important, better citizens . . . Whose just Ways have inspired us to set a goal and reach it . . . Whose never failing sense of humor brings a smile to the most serious minded . . . Whose Wealth of anecdotes and prac- tical knowledge lend a down-to-earth zest to the textbook. It is with great pride that We, the forty-niners, dedicate our Year- book to one who has helped us seek and find great treasure. -Bryant. Q, if ? 2 S5 . -wmQawpQ4 'W 'Z -1. 4. IIN., ,. ,ov ... YC PM x, M Q 5 5 E E To the forty-niners of one hundred years ago, it lay in the deep mountain gulches, in the hidden pockets, and in the rushing mountain streams of Cali- fornia. To the forty-niners of today at Butler Senior High School, it lies in the treasury of books, in memories of victory and defeat, in the inspiration of teachers, in the Wealth of friendships, and in the give and take of the routine of everyday school life. In 1849, the pioneers rushed to the gold territory by every method of transportation that was known. They crowded their furniture into covered Wag- ons or flatboats, strapped their personal belongings on pack horses, and started the long trek to California. There they dug and panned for the glittering gold from the lofty heights of the Sierras to the green rolling plains bordering the Pacific. Vigilantes kept order at the rip-roaring celebrations every Saturday night and punished any claim-jumper. Gold was plentiful, there was money to burn, and signs proclaiming eggs-five dollars a dozen Were common. Today's forty-niners dig for their treasure in the square, cream-colored rooms of Butler Senior High. They come to school every morning in modern streamlined cars, in old jalopies that look a century old, on bicycles which may even be equipped with a radio, and by foot. Whether it is in the green coast plains and snow topped mountains of California or in the friendly classrooms of high school, gold is where you find itl ..f' frass- 7224 fd flfazi SMZZQV4 QM gaifm Samoa Scheer! Where the moclern forty-niner finds his treasure. Here in some fifty class rooms are Veins of precious metal tor the pioneer Who seeks and Works. His implements are not pick and shovel and ore pan, but pen and pencils, paper and ink, books, laboratory equipment and industrial tools. Any modern forty-niner can take from his school stores of Wealth which will give him a rich future. The northwest door, meeting A corner oi our three storled place of noon-time philosophers brick and concrete burldmq v tv,-Y-V Noontime finds these students in the front hall of the second floor. The most picturesque entrance to the building, these twin stairways lead up from the North Street doors. The doorway in the background is one of the three front entrances to the auditorium. Even on bleak wintry days, groups of boys and girls gather at this northwest door in the morn- ing, afternoon, and evening to talk over the social events of the day. The tree in the foreground sheltered a frightened squirrel for the length of one afternoon not long ago. L .1 Eng- Q -1, fa vb am 1 Ls. Q 9, sf 4 Q Sw 26 Hi Q1 Q? One of his biggest jobs is to assist the board of education in the selection of personnel to fi11 the teaching positions in the schoolsp in addition, he must see that the teachers have the textbooks and other supplies necessary for their work. The salary checks, bills for building maintenance and repair, and other expenses all of which constitute almost a million dollar business, are handled through Dr. Ander- son's office. To be exact the budget for the 1948-1949 school year is S854,747. If a pupil desires Working papers or copy of his birth certificate the matter is handled through the superintendent's office. The office contains a permanent file of the attendance and academic Work for every child in the public schools from first through eighth grade, it goes back as far as 1911. In adition to this the office has on file a record of the school taxes and budgets. Assisting in the many activities of the office is a staff consisting of Miss Edith A. McGuire, assistant to the super- intendent, Miss Margarette N. Moore, stenographerp Miss leanne M. Grossi, c1erkg Miss Helen K. Bean, principal of Butler Senior High School, is a busy man. He plans the master sched- ule and supervises the Work of approximately eighteen hundred pupils and sixty teachers. All building improvements must be passed by his office. Heauisitions for all purchases, from sheet music to Warm-up coats, must meet his approval. Even the Magnets budget must be endorsed by him. Dr. Bean serves as chief public relations official for the high school, he notifies the public of changes and improvements and approves plans for the var- ious drives, such as the March of Dimes, carried on in the school. ln addition to his other duties, he often serves as confident and adviser to troubled students. Rhoda Freehling, clerk in principal's office, spends much of her day in typing. She uses only one typewriter, however, others are used by Miss Marion McElroy, steno- grapher to the principal, and by student typists. That big odd looking thing is not a television set but a micro-film machire where filmed records are shown. All per- manent record cards tl9l5-l94Ol have been filmed to conserve storage space. What I 'll Qeuianlei These days of pleasure in Senior High l will remember until I die: The joyous times we have in 3C, The long arguments Lois has with me, The chemistry lah with lllr, dtwell, When he aslrs a question, we wish for The radios we make in electric shop, And how we danced at the Senior Hop And one by one, T will recall, The football games of efvery fall, The girl in study who is so cold, And things that 14-Seniors hafven't sold. The days we sit just watching the clock And those study teachers who won't let the bell,- J us talk. The over-crowded rooms and long, long halls, The flights of stairs, pictures on the walls, The things we sold in salesmanship class, And the jinal tests we had to pass. The 1948-1949 version ot the Golden Tornado set a new school record by Winning 14 con- secutive games. The main spearhead of the team was Mclndoe who gathered high- scoring honors tor the season despite his mid-term graduation. The season was ex- ceptionally goody the Tornado won l6 games while dropping only 6. The Golden Tornado proved that it was a team to be reckoned with as it defeated its time-honored rival from New Castle, 49-34. Mclndoe was high scorer with l8 points, and White played an out- standing tloor game. The surprising quin- tet irom Butler High won their sixth consecu-- tive game as they humbled highly-touted Du- quesne High School. Butler's center, Mc-- lndoe, was by far the outstanding player on the floor as he compiled a grand total of 24 points to grab high-scoring honors for the evening. The Golden Tornado opened league play with a narrow 29-25 decision over Kittanning. The lead changed hands many times before the final gun, but the Butler boys proved that they had what it takes and came through when the chips were down. A new school record was set as Butler High won its four- teenth game ot the season. The victims turn- ed out to be Ford City. The tinal score was 40-38, and it was a game that gave the fans little chance to relax during the evening. Mclndoe was high scorer with l9, while White was not very far behind with 13 points. As usual Prokopchak was the man who held the Tornado together. Wm QGCCVZCZ of Zfcwwieen SZGQZQQZ Wim Butler- Oakmont .......... ............ B utler- Arnold ......,.. Butler High trackmen ground out a fourth place in the distance medley event at the Tri- State Coach's Association Meet held at South Park, Saturday, March 27, 1948. The team was composed of Manuel, Balde, Leyland, and McKee. The Golden Tornado was stymied in its at- tempt to open the season with a victory as it went down to defeat at the hands of Kiski Prep. Kiski captured twelve out of a possible fifteen first places. Dunn, McKee, and Balde captured first places for Butler. In a nip-and-tuck affair that took place on a thoroughly soaked field, the Golden Tornado battled Wilkinsburg on even terms right up to the last event. The mile-relay team from Wilkinsburg came through with an import- ant first, however, and Butler was resigned to defeat 66-61. Dunn and McKee rolled up two first places each: the 880 relay team composed of Frederick, Wheeler, Cuffman, and Dunn showed decided improvement when they upset the favored Wilkinsburg team. The Red Hurricane, boasting one of the most powerful teams in Western Pennsylva- nia, romped home first in twelve of the fifteen events to win easily 94V2-32Vz. Dunn scam- pered to a first in the 220-yard dash, and Cummings took a first in the javelin while the 880-yard relay team swept to a decisive victory. Tornado men captured twelve out of a poss- ible fifteen first places against Kittanning to roll up a staggering total of 98 points. Those who won first places for Butler were Dunn, Wheeler, McKee, Greenawalt, Leyland, Gor- don, Collodi, Jackson, Cummings, Mills, and the 880-yard team. Qatar! Butler High School's track team came back from a long trip to New Kensington with their second straight dual win. Coach Rosen- zweig's charges succeeded in taking eleven first places, while New Kensington took all three places in the discus and broad jump. McKee and Dunn again came through with double triumphs, and the half mile relay team set a new low for the season Winning with a time of l:39.5 seconds. Participating on this team were Wheeler, Frederick, Cutt- man, and Dunn. The Tornado men from Butler High School made it three in a row as it steamrollered over Shadyside 78-40. Dunn and McKee set the pace for Butler High School with a pair of double triumphs. The 880-yard relay team and the mile-relay team were victorious. On as dreary day as could be conceived, the Golden Tornado track team slipped and slid to a second place in the District Track Meet held at Ambridge. Ten teams from Western Pennsylvania were present. Important first places were garnered by Dunn, Cummings, the half-mile relay team, and Wheeler, who tied for first place in the ZOO-yard dash. The half-mile relay team again led the field and Won its sixth consecutive Victory of the year. The only team to hold a victory over them was Kiski Prep School. The boys who earned the privilege to go to Connellsville to participate for the WPIAL championships were Dunn, Wheeler, Fred- erick, Cuffman, Cummings, Prokopchak, Houllion, Greenawalt, and Iames. f The air is tense, and grimness and determination are written on the face of Cummings, as he prepares to send the javelin on its way. Teams are chosen in every gym class and games are played off, after school. Those on the Winning team are first row: Ross, Shearer, Sherman, Shermer, Klimek, Divers. Second Row: Boyer, Black, Butler, Piier, Curry. Volleyball is increasing in popularity in girls' sports. Captains for the teams are chosen in the gym classes by the members. These cap- tains, in turn, choose the members of the class to play on their teams. Games between these teams are played in the gym periods, and the winners in each class compete with rival class Winners in games scheduled after school. The Winning group this semester was Sherman's team. Harrison's team followed second. The winning team received medals from the Leaders Club. They are gold with a White enamel B and panelsg the center is gold with a figure hitting a volleyball over a net. At the bottom, Intramural is Written in gold letters. A girls' bowling league has been the project of the bowling committee. Ten teams vie for honors every Thursday after school. Girls' volleyball teams were formed in the gym classes. The winners competed in play-off games after school. These games were organized and officiated 1 by the club. Members took turns selling foot- ball programs at home games and selling confections at the basketball games for the athletic department. The first pep rally to be held during school time was organized and sponsored by the Leaders Club in an effort to increase school spirit at the beginning of a basketball season. Two popular social functions are held each year: a Christmas dance, and a general sports night in which the pool and gym floor are opened for the members and their guests. Programs of the past year included movies, a fun night, a meeting with the mothers of the members, a general sports night, and on other evenings guest speakers were in- vited to discuss subjects of interest to the group. Helen Duncan, one of the fschool organists, is very proud of the two manual Hammond organ and likes to demon- strate the chimes installed last summer. One of the music groups most in evidence are the school organists. These are piano stu- dents Who are auditioned by Miss Millicent Hay. Those Who show the most ability are selected to take organ lessons. The students practice before and after school hours and almost every period during the school day. They provide background music in assembly before the audience is called to order, before the program goes on the air, and at the dis- missal of assembly. Organists also play an important part in commencement activities. They play selections for each of the exercises and also the recessional. While the Butler High School organists are only eighteen in number, they play a vital part in school ac- tivities. Below is pictured the B Band. This organ- ization is an apprentice and training group for A Band. lt is composed of sophomore and junior musicians under the direction oi Miss Millicent Hay. The band meets third period in the auditorium. lt appears before the pub- lic at some of the home basketball games. Miss Hay also directs the Iunior Choir, Mixed Chorus, two girls' ensembles, and two girls' trios. These groups appear in assemblies and concerts. One ot the new systems introduced into the music department this year was that ot scale drills. Each band and orchestra member was required to learn a series oi scale exer- cises and play them from memory. Next year, the drills will become more technical and cover a greater number ot keys. ln this way, instrumental students will become more proficient in the use of their instruments. Even better bands and orchestras will be the result of this new system. Row l: Winters, Grossman, Mack, Wise, Harrison, D. Miller, Doerr, Bartrnas, Ashbaugh, Kohnen, Lowe. Row 2: G. The Magnet is a very important institution around Butler High School for it keeps students and faculty members constantly informed about all school activities, social events, and sports in which teams participate. The five monthly issues are the only official school record of news and events. A regular feature of the Magnet staff is the 2500 word column published weekly in the Butler Eagle. Each week news- casters read the important happenings on two programs over station WISH. ln addition to these worries, the yearbook staff works all year on the senior issue of the Magnet. The monthly issue is classified as a news mag- azine since it presents both literary articles and news items. Various departments, supervised by faculty advisers, are responsible for cover- ing different aspects of the news. These depart- ments combine to publish a forty page mag- azine of literary material, athletics, activities, and special features, in October, November, De- cember, Eebruary, and May. ln April, a special yearbook is published which gives a summary of all the important school events of the past year with special emphasis on the students of the graduating classes. After all the write-ups have been checked and proofread, the Senior Magnet is ready to go to press. The column of high school news in the Butler Eagle and regular broadcasts of high school notes have contributed to better public relations between the public and the school. A staff of four newscasters compile their own broadcasts and present the news every Wednesday eve- ning at 4:30 and every Saturday morning at 11:15.
