HALLS TO CLASS Surrounding the halls of Butler High School and chang- ing those halls to corridors toward knowledge and educa- tion, the classrooms are sometimes forgotten amidst the special events, the colorful assemblies, and exciting athletic encounters. Forgotten quickly are the useful hours of learn- ing in the face of basketball games, gone are thoughts of rewarding discussions as thoughts of the day's extracurricu- lar activities approach, and forgotten is the prime purpose, and its appreciation, of the classroom: its providing educa- tional space tor the learning student. Through the windows of the classrooms comes light to illuminate the pages of books, on the green blackboards appear the days' lessons and assignments. But the inde- finable qualities are present also: the tensing in the air, the quick silencing, as a test nears the desks, the struggle of minds over intangible problems, and the quick thrill of triumph as conquering minds go to challenge greater works. The classrooms become the backbone of the school, en- casing educational personnel and the educational heart of the school and providing the volume of the school itself. The classrooms, so often overshadowed by subjects taught and activities within the school, are the unique and most valuable part of school. The classrooms become the part where school is created, both physically and in spirit.
