BCCC has the largest enrollment it has had in its 56 year history and with it comes many new stu- dents and lifestyles. Almost three thousand stu- dents enrolled for the fall semester to share in classroom or in extra curricular activities. One of the early great moments was the play production A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum which played to standing room only. Some of the cast members frolic in the park to show their exhiliration. BaimW . • sm .;ai Pepped Up The El Dorado Chamber of Commerce spon- sored a We ' re Number One pep rally for this year ' s football team. The rally was held August 31 on the courthouse lawns, and a dance was held in the parking lot later that evening. The rally was well attended by college and commu- nity Grizzly supporters. We ' Can Do Magic ' The 1982 Football Homecoming celebration got off to an early start as a bonfire and pep rally took place at the 4-H grounds on Thursday night. Laina Corder, a sophomore from Oakdale, California, and Earl Magic Walker, a sophomore from Ft. Lauderdale, Flor- ida, were named homecoming queen and king. After the rally, a dance honor- ing the candidates was held in the 4-H building. The parade and game were on Saturday. Celebrate ' 82 Saturday ' s homecoming activities kicked off with a parade through down- town El Dorado, and featured floats and the Pep Band. The Honeybear Dance Troupe performed at half-time of the football game. Homecoming festivities ended on a special note as the Grizzlies trounced Garden City, 33-20. After finish- ing 12-0 in 1981, the Butler County grid team did a complete turn around in ' 82 by finishing 4-4-1. Disapointing? Not really. Look at it from a sophomore point of view. Dur- ing their two years of playing Grizzlies ' football, the sophomores racked up a 16-14-1 record. Not bad at all. With the graduation of some key players and a lack of experienced sophomores, the Grizzlies were a freshman-dominated squad. Not to mention the unexpected resignation of Coach Fayne Henson just three weeks before the summer practices began. Brian McNeely was named successor to Henson and just one week before practice started, went out and gathered a staff and went to work, Actually, McNeely did a fair job under very difficult circum- stances. Coach McNeely said, Our team played really well at times this year, but we really lacked a great deal of consistency. We have a good group of fresh- men returning for next year and I would expect us to be more consistent. In December it was announced by the college that McNeely had been fired. Within a few days, a spe- cial Board of Trustees meeting was called and the official announcement was that McNeely had been rehired as head coach. HEAD COACH BRIAN MCNEELY watches the Grizzly action as he receives information from coaches in the press box. The Grizzly team is led onto the field by co-captains Darren White and Jim Phillips at Circle High School in Towanda where several of the home games were played. 18 FOOTBALL ACTION-top photo, the Butler de- fense attacks the ball. The team ended the season 14-18 but did not qualify for the regionals Five sophomores returned to the team including Arlene Reekie, Cynthia Thrasher. Tammy Martin, Heather George, and Lenda Sheriff. Coach De- bra Sawtelle said of the season: We were all disappointed that we did not qualify for regionals. However, we did have a good season and played some super volleyball at times. My freshmen got a lot of playing experience and this should help us a great deal next year. The members of the team were the undefeated Region Six champions. This is the first time a women ' s team has won a regional title in any sport at BCCC. The team placed fourteenth in the national track meet held at Uti- ca, N.Y. Three women made the All Re- gion Six team: Becky Alpers, Terry Hormell, Charlotte Purcell. Since five team members are freshmen, Coach John Francis stat- ed that he is looking forward to an excellent year next year. Other members of the team were Tammy Hodges, Rachel Seager, and Jody Wells. Jim Keesling, sophomore, was the only individual to qualify for the nationals by placing fifteenth at the Region Six meet. Keesling ran in the nationals at Utica, N.Y. and placed 171st. During the season, the Grizzlies won three meets, took second in two meets, and placed third in an- other with fourth place at the re- gional. The 1982 season was the last one for Coach Oliver Isom since he is retiring from coaching. Isom was a top collegiate cross country for many years. The team had the height it takes to be a top contender. The Grizzlies had four returning starters: Henry Ford, Butch Berry, John Ford and Earl Walker. Berry and Walker were team captains this season. Butler participated in one of the toughest basketball con- ferences in the nation, the Jayhawk Juco. The Grizzlies won their first game against Norther n Oklahoma. Many times during the season they played some outstanding ball. At press time they went against Pratt for a second time, coming out the winner, after being defeated in the first encounter. The Grizzlies were 19-10 overall and 5-6 league at press time. OPPOSITE PAGE: Top left, Butch Berry tries to pass inside to Tony Dye. Top right, Byron Green shoots a jumper for two. Fourth place in the western division of the Jayhawk Conference was won by the women cagers. This was the first time the women made it to the play-offs in four years. The season got off to a disappointing start for the women, but the team picked up momen- tum toward the end. The overall record was 10- 21, and the women were 6-10 in the Confer- ence. Activities Great Grizzly Moments 33 Campus Looks - We ' ve Got You Covered Watch closely because these next four pages are about to explode into an amazing variety of day looks, night look s, city and country looks for college students. Something fantastic happens when you wrap yourself up in the fashions for ' 83. R. A. Wells and Lasater ' s have helped BCCC keep up on all the fashionable trends. Keep it simple. Keep it right. Fashion is taking a more tailored direction this year. Sweaters, combined with the tailored look in pants are great classic looks, and are the perfect item for a college students wardrobe. You can inter- change a sweater with anything and have more than one outfit. Soft. Stylish. More textures to touch. And colors colors . . . colors. ' 83 fashion consists of garden colors, rare antique colors, a season filled with rich gleaming new brilliance. Rich apricots, pinks, yellows, black, pale reds, and all shades of green are in this year. But what ' s more amazing are the color combina- tions one can wear: turquoise with any other blue, brown or purple with yellow, green with violet, even deep blue with black. It ' s pattern on pattern. It ' s mix and match. It ' s stripes and plaids. It ' s all very decorative colors. The styles on the college campus are carefree. The dress of today ' s fashion is an attitude of Anything Goes. With such stylish clothing, imagine the possiblities. A little money and a lot of imagination can make a college student ' s ward- robe incredible! ind Alejandra Encir EDDIE GREY AND JENNIFER PYLE pose in the classic fall fashions. Eddie, in his corduroy jacket and Jennifer in her warm sweater show the casual look of campus life. SCOTT REBHOLZ displays the basics of every college man ' s winter wardrobe, a pair of jeans and a flannel shirt. LEEANN GRIFFITH AND ALEJANDRA ENCINAS model the outgoing fashions of sportswear. 36 Sweatsuit Look SWEATSUITS are the fashion on the college campus this year. Whether it is jogging and exercising, lounging in the dorm or student union, or just attending classes, sweatsuits seem to be the proper dress. Everywhere you go you see different styles and colors. Some are conser- vative and plain while others are brighter and more lively. Earl (Magic) Walker has chosen a more sporty suit in creme and gray, while Jennifer Pyle shows off the softer, more feminine look of a pink suit. Alejandra Encinas shows off the bright outgoing colors of this year ' s fash- ions-pinks and purples. Each is different in style and color, but all are suitable for any informal occasion on campus. Butler Hosts National Rodeo Group Exciting rodeo action filled the El Dor- ado Saddle Club Arena in October when the first National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association sanctioned rodeo was hosted by Butler County Community College. This is the third year that the College has been a member of the NIRA. All colleges that have a sanction are required to host the NIRA rodeo every other year, ac- cording to Daniel Ensz, agriculture in- structor. Two hundred and ninety-seven contes- tants from 20 colleges in Kansas and Oklahoma participated. Because of the large number of contestants, some rode slack after the first evening ' s perfor- mance and on the following morning be- cause there was not enough time for all of the contestants to compete in the perfor- mances. A highlight of the second evening was the calf dressing contest. The object of this contest was to get a shirt and pair of pants oh a calf restrained by a rope hatter. The first team to dress its calf and drag it to the middle of the arena was the winner. A team comprised of Jim Kitch, Andy Massoth, Marc Thomas won the trophy. Cj| id BTTEB Three Bands Attract New Numbers Due to an ever-increasing enroll- ment, BCCC ' s three bands — con- cert, pep, and jazz — all had in- creased numbers this year. Fulfilling the desire for communi- ty involvement, the bands were joined by several off-campus musi- cians in rehearsals and concerts. Never quiet, never subtle, always wild, and always appreciated can describe the members of the Pep Band under the direction of Doug Talbott. Right, Benny Higgs hits it; Talbott prepares for a pep rally on campus. : : ■■:■■■■:■ Pep Band Pride and enthusiasm are high priorities with the P Band members since they were chosen for both their mi cal ability and their spirit. Providing music for all home football and basketb? games along with traveling to several away athletic contes were included in the duties of the band members. The familiar charge sound provided by the Pep Band was always received wildly and enthusiastically by the spec- tators. The ruffles, flourishes, and rim-shots were as much a part of the football games as the kick-off whistle. 42 Vocalists Include Choir, Headliners 1982-83 was the second year for the Headliners Showchoir. This select group is chosen by audi- tions involving both singing and choreography. The Headliners gave four concerts on campus during the year and visited many area high schools. Their travels also included some out-of- state trips. The BCCC Pops Vocal Clinic, held in the spring, brought to the campus nationally known artists to work with the students on perfect- ing their vocal skills. The BCCC Choir is an ensemble open to all who enjoy singing. The Choir presents four e during the year including a Pops Concert spring. The theme of this year ' s concert was Mus from the Movies. New robes were delivered in December adding a more formal, finishing touch to the group. In keeping with the music department ' s desire to provide avenues for the students to express themselves musically, the Ladies Ensemble was formed in 1982. The ensemble has grown to in- clude 12 singers who work on all styles of music, some selected by members and some by the in- structor. HEADLINERS VOCAL GROUP members wear striking black and white costumes. The singers include (front row from left) Jeff Becker, Todd Schwartz, Jim Stuffle- beam, Joe Colangelo, Morey Baizer, David Heinrich, Kevin Lawrence, Jim Speer. Three years later in March of 1932 the local chapter was started and headed by L.W. Nixon. Delta Psi, the only fraternity on campus, is a national honor frater- nity for the purpose of providing an honor society for those doing a high standard of work in dramatics, and provides a wider fellowship for those interested in the college theatre. Approximate- ly 300 students did just that by participating in intramural bowling, flag football, horseshoes, ten- nis, and volleyball during the fall semester. Student participation by the end of the first semester increased by 84 per cent over last year. Intramurals are by far the most popular extra- curricular activity from the numbers participating standpoint. Jeanette Malone, long-time Butler physical edu- cation instructor and intramurals director refuses to take credit for the highly successful intramurals program. In order for intramurals to be success- ful, you need to have the following three elements: captains with excellent leadership, players who show good sportsmanship, and well-qualified offi- cials, said Malone. Regular activities offered during the spring se- mester included basketball, badminton, checkers, golf, horseshoes, billiards, table tennis, tennis. (See the spring supplement for additional coverage of intramurals.) ■ ■ 4 JIM KEESLING seems to own a lucky or talented horseshoe since he has won the horseshoe intramurals for the second year in a row. SAC sponsors such events as dances, concerts and lectures. SAC meet- ings are open to all students. At the beginning of each year, SAC advisers, this year Debbie Sawtelle and Phil Anderson, call a meeting for students interested in planning activities. The stu- dents nominate possible officers and elect three of them at a later meeting. This year, Joe Linot was elected presi- dent; Leanne Hillwig, vice-president; and Jana Cox, secretary-treasurer. SAC sponsored a Get Acquainted Dance, to start out the school year. The dance was considered a success due to the large turnout. SAC sponsored home- coming events including the election of king and queen and the campus float con- test in the homecoming parade. TOP PHOTO: SAC members discuss activity plans. The stu- dents have their local chapter and partici- pate at all levels: regional, state, and na- tional, said Jim Edwards, the Distribu- tive Education Clubs of America (DECA) adviser. DECA involves marketing, mer- chandising, and management. Its mem- bers are enrolled in a class called Field Study Conference in which all students must find a part-time job. DECA ' s main objective is to help students with their career objectives in retail and market- ing, said Michelle Smith, current DECA president for the College chapter. This was the twelfth year the College has had a DECA chapter. Bob Long- necker was the post-secondary state president. The office of vice-president for the College chapter was held by Sandy Stokes and later Joe Heenan. The other officers were: Jana Cox, secretary; Joy Loop, treasurer; Rob Kenemer, parlia- mentarian and John Kenemer, reporter. DECA MEMBERS give pledge o f allegiance. Paper Changes The Lantern, BCCC ' s weekly newspaper, started from scratch in the fall semester when Mitch Fabry and Shelley Crawford took over as co-editors. Due to the lack of staff mem- bers The Lantern asked and got permission from the Board of Trustees to become a bi- monthly, completing the fall semester with eight issues. The paper became a conservative newspa- per during the fall semester. Top news stories involved an investigation on the disorganiza- tion of The Lantern and a need for a student health center. Other staff members included Bob Long- necker, business manager; Joyce Dutton, en- tertainment editor; Jim Keesling, sports edi- tor; Chris Heidebrecht, assistant sports editor. Staff reporters were Angie Embree, Kathy Kuntz, and Lesmes Boada. Photo staff mem- bers were Dixie Glanville and Kevin Fox. In the spring semester, The Lantern took a new road when it again became a weekly publication and acquired new management. Angie Embree was named editor-in-chief. Oth- er staff Kevin Fox Larry Bonura Lantern members included Brian Lindsey, advertis- ing manager; Joyce Dutton, entertainment editor. Staff reporters were Dixie Glanville, Sylvia Sealy, Jody Wells, Lesmes Boada, and Staci Garman. Photo art staff members were Larry Erickson, Lesmes Boada, Kevin Fox, and Scott Kitzenberger. Lisa Hagan was the typesetter. Larry Bonura was the newspaper adviser and journalism instructor on a temporary basis for Bill Bidwell who was on a yearly sabbatical. 57 Rodeo Club Hosts Its First NIRA Rodeo Putting on the National Intercollegiate Ro- deo Association sponsored rodeo here was a major project this year for the Rodeo Club. There were many jobs to do. Organization is the key to a smooth function. Planning and arrangements began months before this rodeo. Jobs such as selling tickets, programs, parking cars, and pushing cattle were filled by club members and other agriculture students. A great deal of the success of the rodeo was due to the involvement of students and the enthusi- asm of the spectators. J.D. Penwell coaches the active group of rodeoers. Their faculty adviser is Daniel Ensz. He organizes entries and makes traveling acco- modations. To become a rodeo team member there are tryouts and recruiting just like any other colle- giate sport. The team represents Butl er County Community College at approximately twelve rodeos. The team competes in the Central Plains region. Kansas and Oklahoma comprise the region designated by the NIRA. The Rodeo Club has been organized for three years and is growing. It offers a chance for all those who are interested in the rodeo sport and the Western Way of Life to come together and share their interest. There are two factions within the Rodeo Club. The rodeo team members participate in National Inter-collegiate Rodeo Association ro- deos. The other club members are enthusiasts of the country lifestyle and rodeo sport. ■ THE RODEO CLUB is in familiar territory, the El Dorado Saddle Club grounds. Top, Mark Jones, Darrel Gray, J.R. At the World contest, she placed first in reasonns, first in overall judging, second in halter, and sixth in performance. Shelly explained, Judging is something you can pass on and teach to others. That ' s why I like it; it ' s something I can share with others. 61 Performers Attract The Honeybears have been a great attraction at half time of most home football and basketball games. They have performed many routines throughout the year. They were able to do so well because of a lot of hard practices which took much dedication. The advisor who helped the girls and gave them support was Rebecca Kuntz. Sixteen girls participated in the squad this year. Not only do they have their hearts in cheering, but their lungs seem to con- tribute even more. They try to get the fans to do a little cheering also. The hard work they put in on flips, turns, and cheers is admirable and well worth it. The young women and men who make up this special group of support- ers are: Captain, Garlis Allen; co-cap- tains, Crystal Whitchurch and Sheryl Boxell; Carl Glenn, Steven Massey, Ja- net Robinson, Angela Craddock, Cara Oursler, and two who began after foot- ball season, Leanne Hillwig and Jenni- fer Pyle. A total of 2,985 students enrolled at BCCC or one of its outreach programs making an increase of 24.6% from the 1981 fall enrollment. This increase made the College the fourth largest commu- nity college in Kansas. Of the 2,985 total, 1,175 students are part-time or full-time freshmen. A total of 747 freshmen attend classes on the campus itself and 391 of those are full- time. Reasons for the sharp increase in enrollment have been attributed to many different causes. The main reason was the state of the economy including the high rate of unemploy- ment. According to Everett Kohls, director of admissions and records, while jobs are sparse, high school graduates find college a valuable asset. Other reasons for the increase could be publicity of last year ' s achievements such as the national championship football team and the High-Q program. This year ' s freshmen were involved with making great moments in many areas. Topeka freshmen; Steve Massey and Carl Glenn became the first yell leaders since 1978. Morey and Milton Balzer, Potwin freshmen, took on different identities when they donned their bear mascot costumes. Freshmen were involved with the College productions of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, The Lion in Winter, and The First Boy. Freshmen were also involved with; band and vocal groups, the Honeybear Dance Troupe, the cheerleaders, the Lantern and the Grizzly. Males made up 53 per cent of those attending. Two reasons for the increase in enrollment were ascribed to inflation and high unemployment in the area. Besides academics, students also enjoyed par- ticipation in extra curricular activities such as arts, athletics, band, journalism, music, student activity counsel, and theatre. President of SAC was sophomore Joe Linot; Leeanne Hillwig was secretary. The Delta Psi Omega sophomore officers were Pete Henderson, president; Peter Albright, vice- president; Harold Stewart, secretary-treasurer. The Delta Psi Epsilon Chi state president was Bob Longnecker. Sophomores in athletics who received awards or reocognition included Don Weatherby, first team all conference and MVP in offense; Curt Pruitt, first place fall Jayhawk Conference in golf. Statewide attention was focused on Butler in November when it was announced that the first year football coach had been fired. The Board quickly met and announced its vote to keep the coach another year. The Trustees also voted to keep Carl Heinrich as president for another year without salary in- crease. Authorization by the Board for plan drawings for a new gymnasium addition was an item of interest to both students and taxpayers. 118 BOARD OF TRUSTEE MEMBERS gather in the Board Room of the Administration Building for a monthly meeting. Even though he officially goes to work at 3 p.m., you cannot set your watch by him because he often arrives early. Roy, Long-Time Custodian To Retire Friend to everyone on the campus, Roy Seymour will leave his custodian post when he retires in July. For seven- teen years he has been more popular than a candy store owner with faculty and students alike. Roy stepped down from his post as head custodian this year but continued to maintain the Library building in its usual immaculate style. Roy does not want to retire but is forced to do so because he is past 70 years of age. Through the years, journalism students developed a spe- cial kinship with Roy and vice versa because he was always around and would drop in for a chat during the many late night hours when the students were working on deadlines for the paper or yearbook. Roy loathed litter but gracefully suffered the agony of defeat when it came to Bill Bidwell and Jo Rogers and their paper, magazine, and book strewn journalism quarters. He would come into their rooms laced with determination to have a showdown about the junk but would usually end up sharing a cigarette and a good laugh with them. Roy feels close to the campus because he helped move the college from the old location to its present campus. He remembers when the parking lots were mudholes and how the first floor of the Library was originally designed to be the Student Union. After the journalism people moved into the new 100 building, Roy claimed things were dull in the Library and that he missed the journalists, a statement that could be interpret- ed to mean that he enjoyed mopping up spilled coffee and listening to high decibel music and primal screams. Roy enjoys the energy of youth and observes the lessons they teach. Great moments for the students during a college year are not neces- sarily momentous times. Some- times great moments are just the little things in life that give plea- sure. Having their great moments are: Henry Ford slam-dunking, Stacy Evans trying to roller skate with the help of Sean Wallace, and the football team having ' June in January at a basketball game. In this the year of the great recession, Butler students found their plea- sures in the simple and inexpensive great moments. Acknowledgments Dillard This year was one of changes put into effect. First-time workers took over new jobs as did veteran employees. Last year ' s changing times made this year interesting and unique. We hope the year was successful for you and hope you will treasure the memory of it for years to come. Most of all, we hope this yearbook will serve as a tool to help you remember 1982-83: the sad moments, the happy moments, the fun mo- ments, and especially, the great moments. i % - i 1 Photographs Lion Has History Members of the drama department presented the historical play, The Lion in Winter, at the end of the first semester with Larry Peters directing. The plot concerns the story of the struggle for power in the royal family of Henry II. He plots and deals to leave his sons with a balance of power which keeps his kingdom in one piece. Henry IPs marriage with Eleanor of Aquitaine crumbles and in Eleanor ' s place is Alais, a young French princess. Alais is be- trothed to John, the youngest of Henry ' s sons. The wedding has not taken place since she is mistress to Henry. Phillip, the king of France, comes to England demanding the marriage take place. Thus the stage is set as three sons vie for power, Eleanor pushes for Richard, the eldest son, for king, Phillip deals for his sister to be wed, Alais fights to be with her Lover, Henry, and Henry battles them all. The cast members, all students on campus, and the roles they played included: Henry II, Scott Dean Kitzenberger Alais, a French princess, Elizabeth Cott John (youngest son), Peter Wayne Henderson Geoffrey (middle son), David Erwin Leeper Richard Lionheart (oldest son), Robert Blanken Eleanor of Aquitaine (Henry ' s wife), Pat Burch Phil- lip, King of France, Jack Smith Stephen M. Johnson was assistant director of the play. The Lion in Winter was presented on the Fine Arts stage for its three production nights. HENRY II AND ELEANOR of Aquitaine reminisce about the early years of their marriage. LOWER LEFT, the royal family welcomes Prince Phillip. RIGHT, Eleanor comforts her troubled son, John. 135 ' Tom ' Spans Ages The Adventures of Tom Sawyer ' s BCCC,s chil- dren ' s production spanned the ages and audiences very well, commented Larry Peters, theater director. This show transcended to adult audiences better than most children shows. Peters, director of theater for five years, says that he is doing what he always wanted to do: The most important thing to me is the educational opportunities it offers to our students in theater production and the growth and challenges they experience. Peterson found less pressure in producing his own show, for he didnot have to interpret another author ' s ideas and characters. The play was based on six years in the life of the son of a fictional president of the United States. All the action of the play took place in Alex ' s room in the White House because it was his story and unfolded in his world. Cast members included David Heinrich who protrayed Alex; Michelle Banks as Jayne Harris; Nelson Warren as Father Johanmeyer; David Leeper as Joe; Peter Albright as Don Manford; Bill Hoffman as Hans; Art Tighe as Fritz; Todd Schwartz as Hardin; Don Gilliland as Becannon; Lee Dowers as Johnson; Pearl Reiswig as Thomas; Gina Austin as Holly Hoy; Elizabeth Cott as Marcia Kaye; Shelly Crawford as Regina Marie; Michelle Nolan as the newscaster. The Grizzlies never placed, as a team, less than third place. There were four All-Americans this year; Cole, Holland, Forbes, Anderson. Those qualifying for nationals outdoor at San Angelo, Tx. were Anderson, 800m, mile relay; Cole, 110m hurdles, 400m relay; Byron Davis, 400m relay, mile relay; Forbes, 400m, mile relay; Ford, high and long jump; Holland, 100m, 400m relay; Scott 400m relay; Wilson, mile relay. That is exactly what the Lady Grizzlies team did. The women ' s team sent two to the National Indoor meet at Champaign II., Tammy Martin; 60 yard hurdles and Steph- anie Travinchek in the shot put.Travinchek became the first Lady Grizzly ever to win a national title, throwing a 42 1 A in the shot put. The spring season was a time of tribulation; some of the meets were cancelled. Despite the hard times the women did a good job. The WSU relays was a great moment for break- ing school records. Charlette Purcell placed fourth in the 800m run, but, set a school record of 2:32.5 and Tammy Hodges, Martin, Kay Ross, Purcell placed seventh in the 400m relay, but set a record of 52.9. The Jayhawk Confer- ence meet was a time for setting school records; Becky Alpers ran an astonishing 11:09 in the 3000m run, placing first to be named a conference champion, and she set a record in the 1500m run, 5:05.36 taking second place, and a 20:09 in the 5000m, school record. Kay Ross set records in the 200m dash and the 100m dash, 26.2, 12.5, respectively. Travinchek will represent BCCC at the Nationals Outdoor in San Angelo, Texas. COMPLETING HER TURN in the relay is distance runner Jody Wells while her teammates on the bench, Sean Fox and Robert Johnson, look on to make sure that she runs out her leg. Anderson resigned, packed up, and left the same day leaving the team with Vernon Orndorff, parttime assis- tant coach. Anderson was also the college ' s athletic director. The administration appointed Rob Bolks as head coach and he continued the season with Orndorff staying on as assistant coach. The Grizzlies went into the conference tournament as number one seed but finished fourth in the actual play. Joel Basinger led the batting with an average of .404 followed by Cory Lewis with .385. Three pitchers, Chuck Vaught, Rick Hess, and Jerry Krueger had per- centages of .750. Team members included; Mike Buss, Cory Lewis, Mike Stephens, Doug White, Jerry Krueger, Mitch Ben- ton, Rick Schroeder, Joel Basinger, Jeff Johnson, Kyle Orndorff, Tony Reynolds, Kent Jost, Scott Sherman, John Oberlechner, Ron Foster, Chuck Vaught, Rick Hess, Scott Cain, Jerry Krueger, John Seaton, Ed Ket- ley, Fred Oberlechner, Darren Stroud, Kyle Orndorff. The baseballers travelled to Arizona for spring prac- tice with then head coach Anderson. Reportedly some of Anderson ' s problems with the administration stemmed from this trip and complaints from team mem- bers about expense money, how it was gained and how it was spent. The Board of Trustees had only the prior spring elevated Anderson to the athletic director position. CHUCK VAUGHT pitches the way to another victory for the Grizzlies. We started out really great this season with wins over St. John ' s and Hesston. I have been really pleased with our pitching and hitting, said Coach Sawtelle. Two of the more spectacular wins included those over Garden City with 22-9 and 18 and 1. The team was a young squad with only three sophomores. This fact should warrant a strong team for next year also the coach pointed out. The team will be competing at Fort Hays State University Friday through Sunday and complete their spring season at Dodge City Community College May 6 through 8. Men lose final heartbreaker 147 Netters Improve The 1983 season of the men ' s and women ' s tennis teams cann ot be looked upon as a let- down. It was not that bad of a season consid- ering. Considering what? Considering that the weather was so bad that the players had to practice in the snow; or could not practice for nearly a week because of rain. And considering the lose of two hopefuls from the team. Head coach Curt Shipley said of the season, It was the kind of season that you can ' t com- plain about. We lost some matches that we should have won. But, I feel good that each one of the players on the team improved their game throughout the season. The team ' s overall record was 3 wins and 4 loses. And Roger Joyce, who played at the number one position throughout the year, was the only member of the team to compile a winning personal record (6 wins, 3 loses). The men ' s tennis team consisted of Roger Joyce, Monte Watts, Tony Brewster, Tim Wal- ters, Chris Heidebrecht, Chris Birdwell, and Robert Hoover. The women ' s team was made up of Stephanie Shipley, Lenda Sheriff, Anita Jacob, and Denise Winzer. Curt Shipley was the head coach and Lynn Havel was the assis- tant coach. The team finished second overall in the Jayhawk juco conference. The team had a very good fall season. At the first meet at the Cloud County Invitational the Grizzlies finished an awe- some first place out of thirteen teams with Thad Purslow taking second place medalists honors. The first conference meet was held at Hutchinson where the Grizzles came out with a disappointing third place finish with Curt Pruitt bring- ing home the silver medal. After Christmas break the Grizzly golfers were looking forward to a good spring season. But, when the Grizzlies traveled to Fort Smith, Arkansas, they did not expect to place a disillusioned fourth place. When they returned to Kansas they had some real good meets never finishing less than second place. Curt Pruitt took home three first place medals during the spring season. Two Grizzlies Thad Purslow and Jamie Wolfe will be representing the Grizzlies at nationals in LeHigh, Florida. Felix Adams coached the linksmen. Lion Has History Members of the drama department presented the historical play, The Lion in Winter, at the end of the first semester with Larry Peters directing. That is exactly what the Lady Grizzlies team did. The women ' s team sent two to the National Indoor meet at Champaign II., Tammy Martin; 60 yard hurdles and Steph- anie Travinchek in the shot put.Travinchek became the first Lady Grizzly ever to win a national title, throwing a 42 W in the shot put. Team members included: Mike Buss, Cory Lewis, Mike Stephens, Doug White, Jerry Krueger, Mitch Ben- ton, Rick Schroeder, Joel Basinger, Jeff Johnson, Kyle Orndorff, Tony Reynolds, Kent Jost, Scott Sherman, John Oberlechner, Ron Foster, Chuck Vaught, Rick Hess, Scott Cain, Jerry Krueger, John Seaton, Ed Ket- ley, Fred Oberlechner, Darren Stroud, Kyle Orndorff. The team was a young s quad with only three sophomores. This fact should warrant a strong team for next year also the coach pointed out.
