Physically, the college chg addition of n ew buildings. Two new eight-plex dormitory buildings, one for males and one for females, resemble houses. Each contains a kitchen area with cooking facilities, a living and dining area, and two private bathrooms. The campus grew with construction of a new building housing the nursing department, journalism, chorus, instrumental music, laboratory science, photography, and audio visual. For fall, a five percent hike over the preceding year in enrollment resulted when 2,327 students enrolled. The 1981 football squad was undefeated and ranked number two in the National Rankings before playoffs started. This was the first time Butler was ranked nationally in twenty years. The year 1981 brought several changes in physical appearance in education, and in school spirit to the campus. The changes are only the beginning of what the campus will encounter as it prepares itself for the students of the future. Dorm Life BCCC added two dormi- tories to the campus this year. The dorms housed 16 stu- dents, eight men and eight women. The new dorms came equipped with kitchens. Sophomores were eligible to live in the new dorms. The old dorm housed 116 stu- dents, 58 each, men and wom- en. Student relaxing in the old dorm are, clockwise: Jeff Sanders, Greg Blackman, Ju- lie Morgan, Louis Craft, and Melanie Crow. RELAXING IN THE NEW DORMITORY are, clockwise, stu dents Valerie Edwards, entering; Nanette Miller, Valerie Ed wards, Shelly Pruitt, Kay Easley, and Steve Foster. Class Time t , BCCC offers a wide area of classes ranging from in- dustrial arts and laboratory science to music and art. The classes offer a wide va- riety of interests to appeal to the student. These stu- dents show their various different reactions to their daily classes. The students this page, left to right, Sue Kelly, Pam Rader; Annette Sowder, Terri Sooter, Gary Cox. On opposite page, Joyce Shevenet, Charles Fuller, instructor; Ted Zweifel, Donnie Greenlee, and Jim Reeves. Homecoming 81 Kim Rising, freshman from Dexter, was crowned 1981 Football Homecom- ing Queen. Rising was nominated by the cross country team, and A. C. Poynter, a sophomore from Wichita, was elected King and was nominated by the drill team. Homecoming festivities began with a Friday morning assembly in the Audi- torium where the king and queen were crowned. The parade and game were on Saturday. Homecoming Parade And Halftime Action In the Saturday morning homecoming parade, floats and the Pep Band were featured. The drill team performed at half-time at the homecoming game. The Grizzlies were victorious over Dodge City, 45-6. Fair Activities The Kansas State Fair attracted many students and teachers. Fair activities in Hutchinson were scheduled from September 11-19. It ' s a way to meet more people and for freshmen and sophomores to get to know each other. Intramurals didn ' t really change much in participa- tion from last year, said Jeanette Malone, physical edu- cation instructor. Miss Malone plans all the intramurals for the year. The fall semester had 193 participants. Miss Malone says, the individual sports were weak in some areas, while the team sports were very strong. Tennis started the season off with Jeff Regier, the winner. Flag football then followed with Born to Kill emerging as champs. Cox Jock ' s and Regier ' s were the other football teams. Jim Keesling was victorious in toss- ing horse shoes. The Pfingstens won mixed bowling out of 13 teams. Taking the volleyball section was Regier ' s Follies, followed by the Ace ' s. Coming away with pool singles was John Kendricks. To end the fall season, Rog- er Joyce won table tennis singles. JEFF REGIER, sophomore, was the intramural single tennis win- ner. The Grizzlies started out with a convincing 26-0 win over the Air Force Academy junior varsity and never looked back. After that win, the Grizzlies rolled over four Jayhawk Conference opponents to set up the show- down with Coffeyville. Going into the game, the Ravens and Grizzlies were both 5-0 with a shot at the conference championship. The Grizzlies drew first blood on Mike Nardone ' s touchdown pass to Tex Allen, but Coffeyville came back and held at 14-9 lead with 2:21 io go in the game. The Grizzlies started the final drive from their own 42-yard line and converted three fourth down conver- sions including the winning touchdown, another Nar- done pass to Allen. After that, the Grizzlies completed the regular season and playoffs and faced an encounter with the Golden Norsemen of Northeastern Oklahoma A M. The Norsemen scored two first quarter touchdowns but then it was all Butler County as the Grizzlies scored a touchdown in the second quarter and two in the third to clinch the national championship. The women finished third at the Re- gion VI meet in Wichita, ending the sea- son. Although the Grizzliettes as a team did not qualify for the national meet, Becky Anderson qualified as an individual, fin- ishing 94th in the national field of 134. Her time was 21:01.75. Harriers Rank 6th, NJCAA The Grizzly cross country team had a superb year for 1981, compiling three first place finishes and three second place finishes for the season. The har- riers placed second in the Region VI meet in Wich- ita. Butler then went on to place sixth in the NJCAA Championships in Wichita. Frankie Nunn was the Grizzlies ' number one man in Region VI with a time of 25:07, which earned him Ail-American. Butler had four harriers break the 26:00 minute barrier with Nunn, Jeff Miller 25:32, Kevin Miller 25:36, and Paul Taylor 25:51. Ollie Isom is the coach. Basketball Moves Up Butler County ' s basketball team surpassed all expectations in 1982, sporting the second winningest record in the Grizzlie ' s histo- ry. Before the season started coach Jack Sutter and assistant coach Gene Arnold ' s goal was to improve upon the 1980-81 record. But by the Christmas break, the Grizzlies had already improved on that mark by standing at 12-2. After Christmas, the team went 6-0 in conference play action before falling to Dodge City at Dodge for the Grizzlies first league loss. Returning sophomore players were Steve Foster, Andre Barber, James Douglas, and Major Craig. Douglas, East St. Louis, 111., made the All Tourney Butler Classic and the Forest Park (Mo.) MVP (most valuable player) award for six feet and over. Barber, Topeka, was selected MVP, six feet and under at Forest Park. At press time the Grizzlies were 21-5. With three games left, the Grizzlies have a shot at winning the Jayhawk Conference. Henry Ford and Douglas were leading scorers for the team. JOHN FORD goes up for two. The Grizzliettes won their first opener against Allen County 49-39. The Grizzliettes, towards the end of the sea- son began to play like a team and improved their over-all season 9-17 and the league record of 4-8. For the first time in over a decade and a half a new classroom building was built on the campus. Members of the administration studies the needs, feasibility, and financing of the project and presented the idea to the Board of Trustees last June for its approval. The architect ' s plans were approved and construction started immediately. The building was occupied by its first tenants just before semester break. Dr. Carl Heinrich, president, said of the school term: This has been an exciting year. We have set new records in sports, we have set new records in enrollment, and we feel we have set a new record in overall achievement at the college. I am pleased with the year and proud of everyone who has had a part in this success. Dr. Carl Heinrich, President Ron Wison, Dean Applied Science Technology William Cummins, Dean of Student Services Dr. Larry Devane, Dean Liberal Arts Sciences Susan Gilliland takes dictation from Dr. Devane. BCCC Trustees The Board of Trustees underwent two changes in personnel during the school term. Pat McGee, Augusta, re- signed at the end of the fall term and the Board selected Wayne Matlock, Andover, to fill the unexpired term. Dr. Sue Unger, chairperson of the Board, resigned March 1 and her suc- cessor was to be named by the remain- ing Board members. The Trustees ' approval for a new classroom building came into realiza- tion when the building was completed in December. A termination case for a long-time instructor involving alleged malfea- sance at the college had to be dealt with by the Board during the spring term. The Board ' s negotiations with the teachers ' bargaining unit ended early this year with the teachers ' signing in January. DR. CARL HEINRICH ADDRESShb a group or downtown people explaining some of the long range goals of the college. BOARD OF TRUSTEE MEMBERS attend their monthly meeting in the Board Room on the campus. From left are Eugene Fisher, Augusta; Pat McGee, Augusta (resigned); Greg Mathias, El Dorado; Dr. Sue Unger, chairperson (resigned); Keith Martin, El Dorado; James Hittle, Towanda; Dr. Carl Heinrich, president of the college. The Board meets the first Monday of each month. Faculty-Staff Faculty members number more than 100 including part-time faculty. Some faculty also serve as division chairmen who are classified as administrators. BCCC faculty members do not have aca- demic rank as do four-year college faculty; therefore the faculty are all called instruc- tors. The term staff covers everyone who works at the college but who is not faculty or administration. But a number of staff members such as the director of buildings and ground are also in administrative posi- tions. Part-time faculty who service not only the off-campus facilities but also teach on campus now out-number the full-time ten- ured faculty members who are career teach- ers with graduate degrees. According to registrar Everett Kohls, the main reason for the increase was the jump in tuition at four year state schools. This year ' s freshmen moved with the changes and got involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities. Student activities council elected freshman Brenda Johnson as president and freshman Leanne Hillwig as secretary. Freshman Michele Smith was elected state president of the Distributive Education club. Several freshmen became involved with sports this year. Twenty-six members of the Grizzly ' s number one football team were freshmen. The cross country team which placed sixth in the nation had seven freshman team members, including Frankie Nunn, who was named All-American. He was the only Kansan to re- ceive the honor this year. Other Freshmen who got involved in activities in- clude Jody Ferguson who became a Grizzly mascot, and two cheerleaders, Lori Horner and Arlene Reekie. Kim Rising, a Dexter freshman was named football home- coming queen. Freshmen staff members on The Lantern included Lee White, city area editor; Jim Keesling; news editor; Cathy Browning, assistant news editor. Freshmen editors on The Grizzly included Jan Gaha- gan, layout editor; Jill Angell, copy editor. Other freshmen found their niches in band, chorus and drama participation. Ron Dean and Von Hardin hang out in the Stu- dent Union lounge, a favorite place any time of the year. JANET CORYELL and Rebecca Kuntz view the poster that Kuntz made announcing the Civil War Days to be held on the campus in May. Coryell is the originator of the idea which the Butler Historical Society and El Dorado Art Association helped implement. AN EARLY SPRING DAY (even in February) will bring students out in the sun on the campus even if it is only to study. Debbie Sparks, Rick Remsberg, and Heather George make an attempt to concentrate when it is 70 degrees in February. INSIDE TRACK PRACTICE means that spring and track sea- son are not too far away. Dennis Tex Allen stands and watches while Tammy Martin and Tony Shelby practice clear- ing the hurdles getting ready for the serious competition. 115 A ckn owledgmen ts We, the staff members of the The Grizzly, would like to thank all the people who have aided and assisted us in getting out the book this year under sometimes adverse circumstances. It was a year of changes, and the changes affected our production especially during the fall term when the yearbook room was moved twice and the staff did not have a dark room for one semester. Things got better in the spring, but it was not in time to save us for our final deadline of February 15, and we did not make the deadline. Hence, if the book is a week late, we apologize. We especially wish to give credit to the following persons who contributed photographs and copy for the book: Photographs Chuck Carson Kelly Edwards (The El Dorado Times) Larry Erickson Roger Joyce David Leeper Jason Mueller Sam Ruggles Don Toburen Lee White Copy Bill Bidwell Paul Taylor Ted Zweifel The Grizzly Staff Jay Baumann Editor-in-Chief Jeff Regier Photography Editor Jan Gahagan Layout Editor Darrell Alexander Staff Butch Berry Staff Derek Dillard Staff Cindy Stout Staff Jo Rogers Advisor Index -A- Adam, Verlee 96 Ade, David 68 Ades, Robert 68 Ades, Steve 50, 84 Adlesperger, Doug 96 Aeschliman, Doug 68, 102 Agard, Kay 84 Agudelo, Ralph 68 Aguilar, Jose 96 Aguirre, Peter 84 Ahlefeld, Mitchell 68 Alabaraonye, Humphrey 102 Al-Azad, Muhammad 109 Albertson, Doris 102 Albright, Peter 32, 68 Alexander, Darrell 19, 68 Alfaro, Angie 68 Alfaro, Christina 33, 84 Alford, Gary 68 Allen, Dennis Lobo 43, 44, 46, 84, 47 Allen, Dennis L. Morning tours for residents of Mid-America Nursing Center and El Dorado Cub Scout packs were conducted before the event opened to the pub- lic at noon. Members of Crowley ' s Clay County Company re- enacted a Civil War battle twice during the after- noon. Mock battles were fought on the southeast campus field as spectators filled balconies in back of the Gym and lined the battlefield for a glimpse of cannon fire and soldiers firing their muskets. Away from the battlefield, visitors could taste food from the era, listen to lectures and see slides about the Civil War, see exhibits of memorabilia from the era, listen to folk singers and a whole array of activities during the day. In the evening, an open-air concert by the Col- lege ' s music department and Crowley ' s Clay Coun- ty Company was presented under the library. Butler Jazz Arts and the Headliners performed musical selections from the Civil War Era for an estimated 300 people. A fireworks display lit the night sky over the campus after the concert. Due to the growth of the program the department moved to a new area in the recently completed 100 building. The department implemented a bi-level nursing program at the college. The bi-level program enables a student to take the practical-vocational nurse license examination after completing the first two semesters of the nursing program and the summer practicum. A student may exit the program at that point or return for the second year to complete the associate degree level of the program. Nursing students gain experience in clinical agencies including S.B. Allen Memorial Hospital and Knutson Manor, in El Dorado; St. Francis Hospital, Wesley Medical Center, St. Joseph ' s Medical Center, and the Veterans ' Administration Hospital in Wichita, according to Pat Bayles, director of the program. Their first loss of the season was with Cloud County and Coach Sawtelle said, We didn ' t hit the ball well at all, and we also did not handle the game pressure too well. We hit the ball better and plotted better defense. They came back to split one with Dodge City 4-13, 8-7. They won two of their last six games.
