Z)[ f. w The Grizzly Butler County Community College El Dorado, Kansas 1976 Contents Administration p. 10 Faculty p. 16 Sophomores p. 40 Freshmen p. 50 Athletics p. 64 Organizations p. 82 ' These species are quite fascinating ' Good Day , ladies and gentlemen. My stay here has led to some startling discoveries concerning the curiously strange wild life that inhabits the cam- pus of this college. To study more effectively the students of this fine institution, I divided them into three separate classes: the ATHLE- TICUS CLODUS, the PARTIUS SOCIA- LIUS, and the BRAINIUS BRAINIUS. The Athleticus Clodus and the Par- tius Socialius usually commune with each other quite freely. One of the prime spots for observing this is the Student Union. It contains the recrea- tional activities and refreshments for the students after a hard day of fighting off dangerous teachers (Dangerius Tea- cherius). Here we see different species grazing together, looking for a prime spot in front of the T.V. in the Snack Bar the species feed when hungry and fight out differences in a fast-paced game of Foosball or pool. The Brainius Brainius is a totally dif- ferent matter. To find this elusive and shy creature we must set up a carefully concealed observation point in the Li- brary. Here the creature quietly min- gles with the nosier species, but can easily be identified by the fact he stud- ies. The Administration brought in the world renowned psycho-zoologist, Dr. Hillary Maelstrom, to study the wild life of Butler County Community College for the past year. His report was fascinating but to tell you about it, here is Dr. Maelstrom: jgMB — W ■ The campus . is not all studying The campus . . gives oil, takes blood ■9HH President Edwin J. Walbourn Edwin J. Walbourn, President of Butler County Com- munity College, resigned at the end of the fall semester to become executive director of the Kansas Association of Community Colleges. Mr. Walbourn has been involved in the growth of the college since he came to the campus in 1952 as an instructor. At that time the school had an enrollment of 265 compared to over 1400 this year. He began his work in the administrative branch in 1959 when he succeeded the dean to become acting dean of the then El Dorado Junior College. He remained in that position until 1963 when he was named the first president of the new coun- ty college. Mr. Walbourn was instrumental in the action that helped make El Dorado Junior College the first county college in the state. In his new capacity, Mr. Walbourn will continue to be closely allied with the progress of the college. Because of his long devoted service to BCCC, and for his special interest in and understanding of journalism, the staff of the 1976 Grizzly wishes to dedicate this yearbook to President Edwin J. Walbourn. Dr. Carl L. Heinrich was appointed president of the college in February after a month of holding the title of acting president. He succeeded Edwin J. Walbourn who resigned in December to become executive director of Kansas Association of Com- munity Colleges. Dr. Heinrich began his teaching career in Great Bend in 1958. From Great Bend he went to Topeka to become Guidance Consultant with the Kansas State Department of Public Instruc- tion. From 1963 to 1970 he was director of the Community Junior College and College Accreditation Section. He then became Director of Community College Education, Emporia Kansas State College until 1974, when he became Vice-Presi- dent of Butler County Community College. As Vice-President Dr. Heinrich was responsible for develping the highly success- ful Outreach program. He was graduated from Kansas State University with a B.S. degree, and he received his M.S. degree from Emporia Kansas State College. Dr. Heinrich earned his Ed. D. degree from the University of Kansas. Dr. Heinrich is married and the father of four sons. He and his family reside in Augusta. The Board members are responsi- ble to the taxpayers of Butler county for the expenditures of their tax dol- lars for whatever purpose. The six members are elected by the voters of the county. Staff members include Kay Krause, Vicki Coffel, Cindy Ander- son, and Pat Lowrance. 30 Students counseled Most students find the services of the Coun- seling Center quite useful. Butler College ' s staff of qualified counselors provide many beneficial services for students such as orientation tests, a file of employment listings, and current college catalogs. Students with personal problems often visit with the counselors to seek help. Each fresh- man must visit the Counseling Center once during the semester as part of his orientation course. The counselors, Bill Trent, Vic Bland, and Judy Strain, also teach academic courses at the college. The instructor, Mrs. Debbie Hinnen, is a graduate of the Butler County Community College where she was president of the Student Council. She received her nursing degree at Wichita State University and has been employed at Wesley Hospital in Wichita. Mrs. Hinnen, the former Debbie Bare, is a native of Douglass. The apparent low bidders for vehicles to replace present college vehicles were Gray Motor Company, El Dorado, for a 15- passenger van for $6,615.89, Parks Motor Company, Augusta, for a 12 passenger van at $6,014.75, and Resnik Motor Company of Whitewater for a station wagon for $5,103. These were the apparent low bidders and will be awarded the contracts after a check to make sure the vehicles bid meet the specifications. Bids were opened for the present college vehicles, but all were rejected as being too low. The Board or- dered new bids to be taken. It was also decided that the college would purchase only one station wagon, and retain the present station wagon with low mileage rather than sell it at this time. A contract to the All Type Fire Equip- ment Company of Wichita was awarded as it was the apparent low bidder at $1,144 to install automatic fire extinguishers in the cafeteria and snack bar kitchens. These are now required by a state fire regulation and the bid is subject to the equipment being approved by the state fire marshall. The Board approved the trial lease contract with the Osage Manor in Augusta for space to operate a branch of the Adult Resource Center in that city. The facility will open this week. It is to be on a three- month trial basis, with an option to renew. Bills and warrants in the general fund for $122,802.10; in the vocational fund for $20,317.56; social security fund for $16,452.76; and bond and interest payment in the amount of $84,937.93 were approved for payment. In a lighter vein, the Board was told that the belly dance instructor at the college will teach a class for men if enough desire to take such a class, because of federal law forbidding discrimination on the basis of sex. y ■ % | j ■ ' ' II HOj II ! They must make the decision whether to terminate formal education or pursue higher education. Sophomores at BCCC are not cohesive as a unit because they are usually busy planning their individual educational, profession- al, or trade careers for which their two years in college have prepared them. The common denominator is the hope for achievement of sufficient credits either to graduate or to tranfer to a four year institution, or both. The weather was not the only thing that showed marked differences this year. Fresh- men found that student council and freshmen offices had been abolished, so there were no elective offices to run for. Homecoming festivi- ties including election of homecoming queen were also history at BCCC. Nevertheless freshmen found their niches in activities such as varsity and intramural sports, dramatics, band and vocal groups, and other clubs and organizations on the campus. Campus Crusade (CATGIF, Christians Also Thank God It ' s Friday) kept the tradition this year with the largest at- tendance of any club on campus. On the average there were 30 people meeting in the Purple and Gold Room each Friday. The executive committee members are Kathy Allison, Don Carbon, and Brad Brown. Special activities this year were a talent show, hayrack ride, and a joint ses- sion with the Black Student Union. 88 Distributive Ed markets products Members of DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) received news this year that BCCC ' s program had been selected as one of the four outstanding programs in the United States. Butler ' s DECA chapter has earned an envi- able reputation on the national level during the past five years having won 23 national awards. Formerly called marketing technology, the program at Butler is now officially called Career Development in Marketing. Students in Distributive Ed participate in complete marketing programs for new items. The Kitty John was one of the suc- cessful marketing programs. From 1973 through 1975 the students have won top awards in the contest for newswriting , layout, and makeup.
