By using my opportunities here, I shall progress toward positions of' greater responsibility and larger linan-- cial returns. THEREFORE, I WILL: I. Make good use of my time. 2. Do my best to master my daily tasks. 23. Use my study periods for work. -l-. Find profitable work to do when the teacher is absent from the room. 0. The Hi Y has endeavored to assist the boys ot' this school who are behind in their work by forming a Help Com- mittee. This club is a strong advocate ot clean scholarship and clean sports. Recently it held an Honor XVeek and had all the students who believed in clean scholarship sign pledge cards. Plans are being made to entertain the Soccer Team sometime this semester. Every Thursday the members meet at the Central Y. M. C. A. with the lli Y Clubs ot' Fifth Avenue, liiverside, and the Ralston High Schools. SIIIDIDUI' at 6:00 o'clock is followed by a talk on subjects important in a high school boy's lite. Ma .0-B GIRLS The freshman class is always the largest unit in a school. Of the -155 freshman who entered in September nearly 300 are girls. This year for the first time this group has held regular meetings on Tuesday at the Special Period. The objects of this freshman organization are: 1. To promote general culture. 2. To become better acquainted. 3. To foster a better school spirit. -1. To develop leadership. 5. To promote class activities that will call into use information and skill obtained through school sub- jects. Short sketches emphasizing the care of the skin, hair and teeth were written and given by girls from different classes. On December 7 the program was a review of an article, Good Manners for all Occasions written by a well known high school principal. The program for December 19, the last meeting before the December vaca- tion, was a review of the skteches given at previous meetings. The girls had as their guests at that meeting the mem- be1's of the 9-B Faculty and the 9-B Boys. The girls' holiday plans were gifts made by them, and contributions of fruit. These were sent to various Day Nurseries and Public Homes. TIIE Bl.'S1N1iNS IJIHLS I'l,I'li The Business Girls' Club which is composed of all the colored girls in the school has had some very interesting meetings under the direction of its new leader Miss Moore. The purpose ot' the club is to unite its members in the spirit of t'riendliness, and service, to win other girls to its membership, and to stand for the best things at home, in the school, at work, and in the church, and community. The oliicers elected at the beginning of September are as follows: President, Sallarthiele Pollard, 10-A-1. Vice President, Laura Reid,,10-A-3. Secretary, Gladys Lane, 10-B-3. Treasurer, U. V. Ross, 9-A-6. HOUSEHOLD ECONOJIY Two years ago Miss Irene McDermott, Director of Household Economy, gave Business High Girls a new interest in Domcstic Science in that she sent Miss Kronfrt, who was to teach the girls to make the things they needed. Exhibits have been held twice each semester showing samples of the ac- complishments of our girls, and a great deal of talent was discovered. Several girls found that they had more talent for sewing and designing clothes than for shorthand and so were given a special schedule giving them more time tor the development of that talent and are now employed in dress- making establishments, making good. Many of our girls wanted to learn to embroider and knit. They were given the opportunity and now they know how to keep their fingers busy, in leisure time, to beautify their clothes and hoinc-s. Among the services rendered by the Household Economy Department were the making ot' one hundred and ten cos- tumes t'or our Operetta Cinderella , given at Schenley High last June. An American flag was made, also a I rench flag. Typewriter covers are mended, athletic garments worn by our boys are kept in repair. -.-lima Jacob. 1' Tllli !'U,1l,l!IfHC'I-lL Ii'EC'0IfD Olumplimvntn nf IU A- fUz1111tz11'g, 1923 Qllzusu Gbtlirrruz l 1 0SltlCl1Tp-Allf 'HA E lx lJl'l'NA K. Business High School won the Junior High School Baseball Championship, winning every league game' except the one with Ralston which was the last game of the season. Business might have beaten Ralston had it not been for two of its players who had been doing great work all season for Business, be- ing made ineligible to play a few days before the game with Ralston. Riverside defeated Ralston, two weeks after Business traveled to XYest End and defeated Riverside. Ralston was again defeated by Irwin. Business had defeated lrwin early in the Season. Business also defeated Latimer, and the game that had to be played with Rals- ton was the only league game that was left to be played. Ralston's defeats by Riverside and Irwin entitled Business to the Junior High School Baseball Cham- pionship provided they would beat Rals- ton. Business was defeated by Ralston and therefore was tie with Riverside for the championship. As tl1e rule of the Board of Public Education says that no championship games are to be played off, Business was then entitled to the thnn pionslnp. TOPICS' IN BRIEF 'l he question is whether our reports Business High's heaviest clouds are lined with shorthand. It has been a source ot' wonder what football. team could stand the rush of the 10-B's when the 13:15 bell rings. The sight of Miss Pond's morning line gives one the idea. of what our lunch line in the cafeteria would be if there was only one luneh period. Every student in Business High ex- pects to be a stenographer or a book- keeper, but when? You always know when there is going to be a test, because the otlice is full of sick students. 10-B-3 is always up in the air. They never come down except for lunch. Some of us a1'e going to see the 10-B teachers another semester. It' not more. About the only thing settled is an E in shorthand. Bio wonder at the rumor that the Supreme Court Judges ol' Business High are going to resign on account olf the amount ot' work. Shorthand is not as easy as it sounds, it sometimes takes tive semesters to learn it. Students don't rush to Miss Cooley's l'0UIl1 as they do when they go to lunch. Our darkest periods are report cards time. 1 imagine we wouldn't mind disposing ot all ot' our E's and lYs. Don't you? Don't be afraid to criticize-criticize yourself often. Shorthand principles are like spa- ghetti when you think you got them. they slip away. will be better or worse. About the only thing the reports set- tled was that some ol' us would have to take lil-B over again. Anti-cheating week seems to have brought out a heavy vote but will the heavy vote produce anti-cheating. The hand that works the typewriter makes the mark. lVhen you get an A on your report card run home and put it in a sate place. Our marks have l'allen again. Oni only consolation is that they soon will have no place to go but up. A D in time will save nine il' near promotion time. Business High is the place to go when you want a business education. lVhat Business High would like to see is every student doing his fnrn and hes! work. Business may be l'ree, but we paid the price in work at old Business High. llappy are they who do not get an B on their report. liet them ask l'or no other blessing' 5.
