In realify, fhis sifuafion is one of fhe besf fhings fhaf could happen fo you as individuals in 'rhe youfh of life. ' . Condifions are undoubfedly bad 'roday for older people. They are especially bad for fhose who leff academic halls af- a fime w.hen if was easy fo secure a iob: when fhe loss of one presenfed few genuine diffi- culfies, and when one could mainfain a comforfable exisfence wifhouf exerfing oneself over-much. Many of fhe people in middle life foday are unemployed because fhey are unemployable. If is. of course, lfrue 'rhaf fhis descripfion does noi' apply fo all persons who are wifhouf fhe means of winning fheirlivelihood. If is frue, however. fhaf The sifuafion. in which we in America find ourselves sifuafed foday, is aggravafecl by fhe facf fhaf many relafively young men of our fime earned 'rheir liv- ing wifh- so liffle difficulfy in fhe years fhaf lie iusf behind us 'rhaf fhey are unable fo shoulder fhe responsibilifies of fhe presenf period of fin- ancial disfurbance. You who are soon fo enfer upon your posf high school work will have impressed upon you fhe necessify of being resolufe. aggressive and independenf. Whefher you. go fo college. fo business. or fo in- dusfry. you will find 'rhaf characfer is counfing far more foday fhan if did a few years ago. The- goal of life is nof limifed fo making money, nor fo having fhe power which money provides. Neifher is if fhe en- ioymenf of honors fhrough which power may accrue fo an individual. The goal of life is 'rrue happiness which brings wifh if fhe respecf of THREE 32 ll -1 i ' - -. N r..w '-- 1- V yy oTher people and our own respecT for ourselves. No individual can gain ThaT pinnacle unless he has learned To work. unless he has learned The lesson of independence. No maTTer whaT field of acTiviTy you enTer you will find individual worTh counTing more Today Than iT has in. a long Time pasT. In college and in Trade you will find ThaT Those who show by Their acTions ThaT They genuinely appreciafe The True values of life and ThaT They are able To conTrol These values by The force of Their personaliTies will be The ones in demand. If The Teachers of This school, and in a parTicular manner your grade adviser, Mr.. BerlcowiTz. have Tried To impress upon you ThroughouT The four years of your residence here one lesson. ThaT lesson is To force you To realize ThaT The school exisTs for The purpose of making iTself useless To you. If you have learned This lesson well you are now noT dependenT upon The school nor iTs Teachers. buT have The abiliTy To promoTe The inTeresTs of yourselves and Those close To you by reason of The power of individuaIiTy, ThaT is, by reason of your good characTer. IT is forTunaTe, asil remarked earlier in This brief arTicle, ThaT The Time of your graduaTion comes in The period of doubT and difIiculTy. The eriod offers ia disTincT challenge To your abiliTies. You will noT be able To run wiTh The crowd and be successful as people could a few years ago. ' You. as an individual, musT represenT definiTe value. If you do represenT such value, Then The beTTer daysof 'business prosperiTy, which we hope lie ahead, will mean for you noT days in which spiriTual values will be desTroyed, as They were for many in The recenT pasT, buT days in which you will enjoy The True blessings of life by reason of The efforTs of your prior Training. IT is True ThaT whaT I have said seems sermonlike in naTure. In ac- TualiTy, iT represenTs in words whaT your grade adviser has accomplished for you in deeds. Be opTimisTic: be courageous, and be prepared. These counsels represenT The final words I wish To leave wiTh you aT This, The Time of your graduaTion from high school. ' I MILO F. Whaf fhese people will do, remains fo be seen, buf whaf fhey have done is iusf as imporfanf as fhe facf fhaf our old friend George crossed fhe Delaware. y V Sfrangely, fhere are some among us who can acfually recall fhe days when we, fhe proud and haughfy seniors of foday. were once insignificanf liffle freshies . Whaf a change has come over us-fhaf is, mosf of us-since fhenl Af firsf shyly, fhen more boldly, we plunged info Bush- wick's affairs, knowing fhaf our school would benefif for having had us in if. AlThough in our earlier Terms we were noT parTicularly rushed wiTh social engagemenTs, These Tollowed each oTher rapidly as our sTay in Bushwick neared iTs end. One oT The evenTs which never Tailed us was The yearly boaT ride which always provided us wiTh a Tull day of Tun and pleasure. WesT PoinT. These plays amply proved The remarkable acTing abiliTy of prominenT Bushwick- iTes such as Helen Kuraszenski, Louis Joseph, Jack PloscoveTky, Diane Kneapler. RoberT MeyrowiTz and Gerhard HundT. EVELYN DUERRE We salute the Girl Athlete l This honor was bestowed upon Evvy because ot the completion ot tour years ot athletic work, both in class and in the G. A. A. How often have we seen her on the tield, screaming excited words ot encouragement to, her players or running across the tield at top-notch speed? Good- ness, need we warn the fellows that Duey packs a mean punch? But, aside from all this, she is very feminine. She even indulges in that tarnous girlish sport-gigglingl Her winning personality and popularity were recognized when we elected her secretary ot the G. O. Lou is an unwelcome sight to latecomers for he usually greets them with You're late, this way to the late desk. A.kn......L-, ANNE SCHINKEL Anne is a short and sweet name tor a girl ot iust that descrip- tion. Who could imagine Anne with a frown on her beaming countenance? A happy-go-lucky girl is she. who is always tinding a humorous angle to any situation. She has gained membership to the P. E. C. and has gone out tor the G. A. A. Her pet hobbies are ice skating. swimming. and playing tennis. Her favo- rite topic ot conversation is her latest beau. Lunch is the period she likes best-she goes home then. My. how she loves her Alma Materl MILDRED SCHLAK Mildred is always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it. In school, however. the helping jiand takes the torm of homework and there are many who need it. Mildred is very etli- cient and capable in everything she undertakes. She does not say much, but when she opens her mouth. pearls ot wisdom pour torth. She has been secretary to Mr. Freilich. Mr. Friedman and Mr..Primott. Always a good sport. that's Mildred. She's no wall- tlower either. being quite popular among her own set. GERTRUDE SCHLOSSER We don't know what to call her. but she's mighty like a rose. Just a modern girl whosmaneged to maintain an old-tashioned blush. Gertrude's very modest about her abilities. too. She's a very clever girl. She won't admit it, but we know it. She intends to go to City College at night and be a bookkeeper during the day. She isn't satisfied with being a bookkeeper, she wants to be an accountant. Gertrude is a homework headquarters. There's many a student who's gotten a ten tor'Gertie's answers. Our bookkeeper doesn't know whether to put this down as an asset or Liability. but we guess it's an asset because C-Bertie has loads of riends. HELEN SCHMID Guaranteed to laugh your blues away. She must have been born with a grin on her tace because it's been there ever since. As a secretary. her abilities are unexcelled. Helen has served Miss Thompson in that capacity. and has rightfully earned an excellent recommendation. Among the many clubs which had the honor ot her membership is the Sten Club. Being one ot those tew people gifted with the power ot extracting money trom people. she was Bulletin and Oriole and G. O. Rep. a number ot times. These are only a tew ot the numerous services Helen has contributed to the school and to her classmates throughout her high school career. BEATRICE SCHNEPS Here we have our own little Beadie. Although she is small and petite. she has a great deal ot knowledge in that little head ot hers. She is a student who has exerted her best ettorts and has succeeded in receiving high marks, but has not been favored by a much-deserved election into our Arista. We predict a bright and successful career tor her in her tuture education. .lifff-ef. .s 1555: Q 5 , .,... .
