THE SEVEN MEN ELECTED to the school board are from different parts of our unit, which in- cludes Checkrow, Prairie City, Walnut Grove, New Philadelphia, and Sperry, as well as Bushnell. Coming from different areas and having varied professions, these men are able to perform their duty more effectively. This they accomplish by pooling their divergent ideas and then applying the result to the many tasks at hand. The school board has as its primary functions the selection of teachers, the determining of policy that the unit is to follow, and provision of educational facili- ties for children of the unit. The board also acts as a moderator in disputes between the school and the public and authorizes the purchase of all supplies. One of the greatest of the problems the school board has is finding room for the ever-increasing enroll- ment, especially on the grade school level. The board authorized a committee of citizens of the unit to study the problem and endorsed its recommendation that an addition to house the seventh and eighth grades of the district be built to the present high school. The prop- osition was submitted to a vote of the people and was twice defeated. Consequently, the Board of Education is faced with trying to solve the problem in another way. Is Mr. White in, Mrs. Heagy? is a common daily question of dozens of students, who ask to speak with him. Their problems range from conflicting class schedules to advice on Student Coun- cil projects. Teachers also find him a willing and effective source of assist- ance with their problems. Seeing that the academic and extra-curricular ac- tivities of three hundred fifty-two stu- dents run evenly and efficiently takes up the major portion of his time, but he still finds time to sponsor the Student Council and the senior class. ln the course of a day phone' ll handy timesuucr Kits. Mrs. Iohnson, our specially trained guidance coun- selor, worked with every student in B-PC, either on personal or educational problems. One of her most important tasks was that of administering and in- terpreting the results of all special tests. Mrs. Davis, our speech correc- tionists, set up and supervised a pro- gram of corrective speech activities. With the help of modern equipment and special education geared to help- ing students with speech difficulties, she was able to benefit students who had need of her assistance. A service more familiar to B-PC students was the library. With our stepped-up academic curriculum, the pupils found the library a helpful source of research material for various classroom projects. Well stocked with novels, biographies, old favorites, and the most recent editions of periodical literature, the library has had its biggest year. Mrs. Davis :mes the audin-perceptor to test the hearing of all students before prnrcllirlg with a program of speech cor- revfimt. Being tested here are Kcnnv Dc- llvnzy, -larry Nlcllonziltl, and lim Stewart. HOW DO YOU SPELL allegiance? Is this the proper plural possessive form of lady? Do you include the volume in a footnote? and How can you tell whether a verbal is a gerund or a participle? are some of the ques- tions answered in the English classes. These courses provide a broad and invaluable back- ground ior the student. Freshmen review grammar and read DAVID COPPERPIELD, while the sophomores study IULIUS CAESAR. English III students learn about the lives of American authors and read their works, while the seniors in college preparatory English acquire skills in writing themes, term papers, and book re- views. General English pupils learn practical English usage, mechanics, spelling, capitaliza- tion, and punctuation, as well as cover units on business English and advertising propagan- da. In all English classes, students are taught to express themselves correctly, learn to enun- ciate and punctuate properly, and develop skills in comprehensive reading. In Spanish I and II, students study verb forms and con- jugations, and read and translate a Spanish novel. They become familiar with the lang- uage and they gain an insight into the customs and culture of the Spanish speaking nations. B-PC's MATHEMATICS department is designed to care for students of varying needs. In the field of prac- tical math, students learn the fund- amental principles that they will need to know in everyday life. The algebra I and II courses teach the student to solve more difficult prob- lems than those he might encounter in the life of a layman. Geometry develops the student's ability to reason logically. An advanced year of solid geometry and trigonometry helps to prepare for college mathe- matics. The science department of- fers a complete course of biological and physical sciences. General sci- ence provides students with an un- derstanding of the basic, helpful facts of everyday science. Biology ac- quaints students with the origin and processes of all life forms. Chemis- try and physics are both college preparatory courses designed to give science and math majors an insight to the structure of matter: principles of energy: and basic elec- tricity, electronics, and mechanics. New this year was an attempt to speed up the science education of capable freshmen, who were al- lowed to skip general science and elect biology instead. General business teaches the simple business procedures of writing checks, keeping accounts, and bookkeep- ing. In this course the students become acquainted with the different types of skills that a business demands and find out if they have these skills and abilities. Typing and shorthand are basic courses for the secretary, and prove useful in other fields as well. Secretarial training teaches filing, the use of various business machines, and reviews typing and short- hand. Bookkeeping is a vocational course in which students learn double- entry bookkeeping. At the same time, any girl interested in marriage or in becoming a homemaker will find it well worth her while to take home econom- ics and family living. In these classes, girls learn cooking, sewing, first aid, practical nursing, home manage- ment, and many other techniques which will help them in their future home. To organized groups, exercises are taught to' tone up flab- by muscles and reduce or raise weight to the proper norm for the individual. Vigorous exercise also causes the loss of fatty substances in the blood, which would otherwise be deposited in the circulatory sys- tem and cause trouble in later life. However, the PE department also renders valuable service to individ- uals in other areas of their lives. Through compulsory participation the reticent person is brought into the game and shares the sense of victory and defeat. This gives the person a feeling of belonging. Fur- thermore, a standard of good sports- manship is developed, which will guide the person for the rest of his life in dealing with his fellow man. The many different programs of the department acquaint the students with a variety of sports which will give them enjoyment, recreation, and the habit of exercise throughout life. THE IUNIOR CLASS PLAY, THE UNGUIDED Mrss, after a crammed schedule of practicing, publicizing, and ready- ing the stage, was a very successful presentation. The cast, working hard until the last minutes, remem- bered the pointers given by the directors. The stage and make-up crews, cooperating with their associates in all phases of the play, contributed valuable and ne:- essary work in the production. The plot concerned an average American family's reaction to having a blonde Italian student live with thern. While the dif- ferences in behavior seemed at first to discredit the Amer- ican young people, it was evident at the end of the play that the Italian could learn much from her hosts. CHRISTMAS AT B-PC was a time of fun for everyone. With a feeling of joy and good will, the students eagerly entered the auditorium, where the advisory groups presented clever skits. That night the sophomore class presented the play, No STAR 'ro GUIDE THEM, which brought to mind the true meaning of Christmas. Following this, the choruses presented a cantata, preceded by a can- dlelight procession to the stage. Later, the annual dance was held in the cafe- teria, a fitting climax to the num- erous Christmas activities at B-PC. Vai, 'v s ,-. A cafeteria gaily decorated in red and white added to the merrirnent inspired by the Speed Roberts Orchestra. Refreshments of punch and cookies were served during the entire evening. As the hour of eleven drew near. the rush of students to get bulbs, films, and even motion picture cameras, was proof that the royal couple would soon be announced. As the first couple came in, anticipation grew even higher. Finally, when the entire court had been ushered in, Mr. Heartthrob Ronnie and Miss Sweetheart Sue were seated: the crown bearers gave the royal crowns to Gary Gain, the 1958 King, and to Gloria Dim- rnitt, representing 1958 Queen Nancy Dimmitty and the Coronation had begun. When we sat down to write in the memory books of our friends, memories of our four short years in high school came to mind. The home- coming float in our freshmen year that almost won, the Christmas play we initiated in our sophomore year, the junior play, and the prestige and honor we enjoyed in our senior year, plus many others were recalled. As seniors, the realization of our future responsibilities became clear to us. Often we were asked, Have you decided definitely what you are going to do next year? When questions like these were raised, every senior lent an interested ear. The future seemed distant in September, but when May rolled around, taking scholarships tests, interviewing for jobs, writing applications for college admissions, and making plans for summer employment made us realize as never before that the opportunities lVfifi'1g fwsfalgic bits of poetry or prose in classmates 'memory books was a major occupation of the seniors during the last few days of school. and responsibilities of adulthood were upon us. The third game of the season matched the team with their long-time rivals from Cuba. Although Cuba won 12-O, it was an evenly fought game. The next Friday, our team trav- eled to Industry. Here the Spartans came to life and defeated the Eagles, 19-0. At Table Grove, with spirits high, the gridmen spoiled VIT's homecoming by irouncing them 48-13. The following week was B-PC's homecoming game against the powerful Lewistown Indians. S afofziiaad. 5:46446 e I THE BUSHNELL-PRAIRIE CITY SPARTANS had a rather disappointing basketball sea- son. The boys won eight games, dropping sixteen to their opponents. One of the Spar- tans' difficulties was the lack of experi- ence, as only three lettermen returned from last year's winning ball club. However. the biggest problem of the season was finding the right combination of boys which would work together to give the best results. The boys also had trouble in com- bining their efforts on the same night. No matter how hard they tried, it seemed that they could not all c1ick on the same night. As the boys entered the Blind Tournament held at Monmouth, they drew a small, fast Aledo team as their opponents. The Spartans lost this one by the score of 59-56. The follow- ing night the Spartans won third place in the tourney by downing Carthage with a brilliant fourth-quarter attack. As the season continued, the boys were forced out of the County Tournament by Western High. The end of the season found the Spartans battling with Valley High for third place in the Olympic Conference standings to make a conference record of six wins and six losses. In the final game, the Spartans were matched against a highly-rated Monmouth team in the Regional Tournament. Although the Spartans lost, the game was considered one of the best played of the 1958-1959 season. The Cadet's record was eight won and thirteen lost. -fa wg may 3 qw! .fm AN 1 . x, 91 if ,Q 121 :ffif 5 fi. 4 gym , E35 , 'T f Q 1 423' EE N 1 of , K 2 92, x '-V .. At the Christmas Cantata, KING or KINGS, the boys and girls sang in one big group. The impressive program included solos by Marge Marzahn, Deana Io Hughbanks, Mary Lou Craycraft, Bill Trout, and lim Potter. A mixed ensemble and the mass chorus emphasized the sacredness of Christmas through song. Immediately following Christmas vacation, plans were underway for the second spring show, CURTAINTIME '59. Special groups as well as the boys' and junior-senior girls' choruses began rehearsing. Any Wednesday or Friday during fourth period, the strains of 78 Trombones or The Dogface Soldier could be heard float- ing down the halls of B-PC, as the boys rehearsed their numbers. The junior and senior girls also had two numbers for the spring show. Their Mr. Wonderful and In The Still of the Night, with the syncopated accompaniment of the show band, succeeded in get- ting the audience in a swinging mood. Learning the basic fundament- als of choral music was the task of the freshman and sophomore girls as they prepared for future chorus work. The highlight of the year was the superior rating won by the girls' contest chorus at Hamilton. I PE P BA X D mn mx X1 trx lfrumw-s Frm mm tru mt Sc ru ll Nlill'li'Ill xvklll 1 ll tx lX Vinum-nt. In the fall, the twirlers are always doing their high' stepping routine, regardless of the tem- perature. Much toil was required as they worked out their steps with lVlr. Garinger. Their sparkling suits and smiles add a touch of friendliness to the half-time performance, as they head the marching band in welcoming opponents and Spartan fans. During the winter months, our Pep Band adds a certain somethingubetweengarnes. Their rhythms and snappy tunes stimulate school spirit and give color to our basketball games. Though small in size, the Pep Band was the best ever. Their interpre- tations of the latest songs, as Well as the familiar Loya1 and True, pro- vided lively fanfare for the Spartans. ll 1 li1111x111 llllt l111clxx1x IJIIXKXII lllcl ID xml SLLQ111: fl1'Ilt' li1llN'l'tN1 Holm l,HlIQl1lNL l'm1'11t'1' Nlilt-sz r1xl lx x s 1 C 111stt Bill C1154-1'.1ft: HI'llL'4' l'.1l1l1 .luck Ki1'l1y1 -Illllll Nlcflrvxxg 111111 1 1111111111 1 x11 lluwg llillll Cf11111l11tc-N, Xl.11'ic111 f,NlJtH'Il. ,li111 B1'ic'lu'1'. l 1 11 x X x 1 x lllllll N llltll X1ll1111 ll llllN loan lt'lINlIlLIl'l'. l41'4111lt llunty, 111115 llc-ml. l.kll'l'Y lit-ll. 111cl l1t1l1 l ill ltr ul I ll 1 x ll 1tt1111 kr IIIIN ll: l1l11.I. l.a1141'5 Cf1'.1111l1l1-t. lfilfll' C1'a11111'1', Put lfltinu. uc 1 ssl N1 1 lllllllxkl Ilulm Xll'flll'l'l'j. 4l1111iu1' B.1r11xt1'41cl. FFA, or in full, Future Farmers of America, requires all rnem- bers to be active. The members stimulate in- terest in every new freshman by showing off their complete workshop. As a result they have a large membership with many eager underclassmen ready to take responsi- bilities. They must learn the rules of parlia- mentary procedure and practice them in their meetings, assemblies, and contests. FFA also stands for fun, as the boys who went on the trip to Chicago can testify! Other activities this organization took part in include judging livestock, grain, and land: public speaking contest: and their annual pest contest. Work- ing with the FHA organization, they elect the Miss Sweetheart candidates. And this year for the first time, the FFA elected their own sweet- heart at their FFA banquet. lane Pendarvis was elected with Iill Gallehue, Peggy Alls- house, and Anne Evans serving as her court. Thanks to the Industrial Arts Club, the girls' physical education department acquired a new piece of equipment, a balance beam. The individual room passes that traveled down the halls were also made by the club. An addition to the basketball scoreboard was the player identification display board used in the gymnasium. To supplement their classroom and workshop experiences, the boys and their sponsor traveled to Peoria, where they took a guided tour of the Caterpillar Company. The boys spent much of their workshop per- iods working on various projects, which were displayed in the windows downtown. Several of the best projects were sent to Macomb, where they were displayed at an Industrial Arts fair. The Silver Hammer was present- ed to Gary Gain and Harold Spurgeon as outstanding in shop and in club work. 11151 1 It s 11n5, r111sur11 rx Il 1'i1'v-pr1'.s'i1l1'11f: Cm' NYils1111. rr 51111 llf ll 1111 cl 111r1.,11111 111 fl any 1 rt 11111 ittx. 1sp1111.s'111'. In the fall it is traditional with them to gather the material for the Homecoming bonfire and build a float for the parade. This year's float depicted Lewistown riding in an antique, black, horsedrawn hearse. A new project undertaken this year was the purchase of a summer weight varsity jacket for all the senior varsity members. Regular varsity jackets were presented to Speed Roberts and Bob Cad- walader in appreciation of their continuous assistance with the score board and loud speaker system at our athletic contests. To stimulate sports among all boys, the Varsity Club bought the trophies that were used in intramural sports. Their charitable activities consisted of donations to the March of Dimes and the Vince Grady Fund. The senior athlete to have his name engraved on the Honor Plaque for having the highest scholastic average for four years was Locie Pensinger. ll'iIl I Urvr grim' up .stu I ran ,uct u Varsity l4'ftr'r likv yours. While the students enjoyed their papers, few realize how much work goes into the paper. Meeting deadlines, proofread- ing, and typing copy had to be attended to before the Tuesday afternoon deadlines. An exchange of papers with several other high schools sometimes gave our staff a new idea or a new approach to a subject. To make the paper interesting and appealing to everyone, our young journalists spiced it with exciting news in the columns of Snoopy and the old favorite, Alex and Bridget. Frankly, no se- crets could escape the eyes or ears of our mis- chievous writers. Coverage of what's going on in school, coming events, editorials, the sports page, and other items of interests made our SPARTA STAR agraphic record of our school year. AFTER COMPLETING its first year, the Na- tional Honor Society was deemed a success by its members. The Society had several worthwhile projects. The members took re- sponsibility for keeping the bulletin board in the main corridor changed weekly, using pieces of art work, drawn by the students to make it attractive. Not only does the Society encourage development of abilities, but they try to spark more academic interest. In keep- ing with these goals, two book fairs were spon- sored. The books on sale were pocketbooks ranging from science fiction to books of facts. The members of the club presented an assem- bly, which set forth very helpful pointers on good study habits. In order to demonstrate these more clearly, Bud Mead portrayed Do and Kay Vincent played Don't. Two im- pressive installation ceremonies were held be- fore the student body. A most helpful project was the sponsoring of an orientation day for next year's incoming freshmen, during which an assembly was given in the early after- noon to acquaint the eighth graders with the activities of high school, and after which the guests visited freshmen classes. Think the kids will like our new feature section and the big play we gave Homecoming? When are we ever going to get all that copy written? Questions like these cmd m-a-n-y, m-a-n-y oth- ers plagued our staff. Writing copy and heads ate up our precious time. To meet our dead- lines many long evenings were devoted solely to writing copy. When time was running out, the tension grew with each scratched-out line, but one laugh rising from our cluttered tables somehow gave us that vital spurt of extra en- ergy to go on. Our business and advertising staffs willingly worked hard trying to keep the yearbook out of the red and in the black. The ads they sold and the sale of yearbooks gave our Beta Pi Sigma the financial backing we needed. The sale of Christmas cards and the annual chili supper caused our banking ac- count to bulge at the seams, but only for a short time, for films, flashbulbs, and develop- ing costs devoured our funds rapidly. Many times ideas for picture ads would momentarily stump us, and when cries of Do you know l'm twenty characters off on this copy? were uttered, the whole editorial staff shuddered. Although we thought at times our yearbook would never approach reality, we finally saw it emerge as a living thing, something all of us had created. We are pleased. How about YOU? Section editors were tboftonz to top? Pat Kirtley, Kay Vincent, Barbara Robinson. Linda Reno, Marlene Varna-r, Bert Lowe, Jim Potter, Locio Pcnsingcr, Leann XVagle, and lucly Camp. Nlr.
