The Beta Pi Sigma literary staff worked so diligently on MY yearbook, that I was kept busy just running from group to group - trying to watch all the proceedings at the same time! My friends had to decide on a theme, plan the layout, select the cover, choose the type, and schedule the pictures to be taken. Then came my turn - I had to write the copy! While all of this was going on, the business staff was selling advertising, having candy sales, oper- ating stands at games, selling year- books, and promoting ticket sales for the class play in order to meet their S1300 quota. They hope you'll think it was worth all the effort. Me, too! Spnrty Comes to Life. They tell me that she started teach- ing in the rural schools, then taught at the West Side school in Bushnell, transferring later to the high school, where she has taught com- merce for thirty-two years. Two generations of students have passed through her classes, and if what I have observed this year is any sample, she has really made them step. Through the years her high standards and ready wit have won their respect and admira- tion. The Staff and I know that her many stu- dents would like to join us in this salute to a veteran. RENWICK Superintendent of Schools Compliments of BARBER CLOTHING COMPANY I are confident that our new building will be one of which future generations will be proud. In addition, they have provided the best possi- ble educational opportunities with the facilities available at the present time. Sfgamamfewleaz l've been so busy that l haven'1 had time to visit Mr. RenWick's of- fice, but the projects of our genial superintendent have been heralded throughout the school and communi- ty and have been received with en- thusiasm. Perhaps this is due to the careful and deliberate manner in which he attacks problems. His fine sense of humor and helpful attitude have made him a favorite with everyone. My good friend Carol has quite a task Presiding when the seniors meet: But by her side our Lyle does stand To help her out quite capably. The two of them have worked with us To guide our class so properly. In taking notes and minutes, too, Our Sandra does so accurately! And Ethel, with check book and pen, Defends our modest treasury. Together, then, the two of them Transact our business expertly. Spmtq 'a Wefzaee With the leadership of Head Coach George Trotter, my Spartans fought their way through a rugged schedule to the co-championship of the Olympic Conference and a re- spectable 5-4 record. The season was climaxed in the Homecoming game when this inspired Spartan crew came through with a touch- down in the last seconds to win 13-8 and cinch a share of the conference crown. Line coach Ed Iohnson turned out another outstanding line and helped develop such standout play- ers as Verle Thurman and Dave Phelps, All-Conference Tackles, and Co-Captain Duane Spangler, All- Conference Guard. Cap was also honored by being named to a Little All-State team of the Chicago Daily News. Lyle Walters was placed in the All-Conference backfield. Co- Captain Bob Roley received honor- able mention of the Little All-State. 704135466 VARSITY SQUAD Back Row: Galle DQRIQIIIZY, Marshall Buchen, Gary Fofrmhals, Chuck Mulligan, Ray Pensltnger, Lyla Walters, Richard Kirftley, Frank Johnson, Jay Dee Kipling, Ladd Wilson, Louis Bankes, Ray mofn-d Curfman. Since these play- ers possessed about equal ability and only two were letter men, Mr. Lawson was faced all season with the problem of finding the right combination. By the end of the season, the five senior boys became the starting five. Meanwhile, the juniors and sophomores had gained much valuable experience. The season produced a 3-19 record, but my Spartan cagers went down fighting in every game and finished the schedule with a near upset of Macomb High in the Regional Tourney, going down to defeat 44-40. The spirit of my team throughout the season can be expressed as Iay Dee did at the half of almost every game, Come on, you guys: we can get 'em. Coach Trotter's Cadets were more success- ful, with an ll-8 record, and led their division of the conference for a big part of the season. They proved their ability in taking third place in the tough London Mills Tourney. VARSIT Y CHEERLEADERS : Bev, Lorene, Belly, Helen, Rosie ieefzlecwiew Our peppy Varsity Cheerleaders were re- sponsible for the wonderful school spirit that backed my Spartans at every game. Rosie Cassell, a veteran with four years of experi- ence, and Helen Dollarhide, a transfer from Chicago, were Seniors. Betty Reining, Beverly Kreider, and Lorene Bagley will have added experience for next year. The lunior Varsity Cheerleaders, who added color and life to the Cadet games, were Norma Spangler, Donna Buchen, and Karrol Bagley. The baseball season of 1952 provided many close games, but no victories for my Spartans. Coach Lawson had difficulty getting full-scale practice under way, due to the poor condition of the field, and as a result, the Spartan baseballers were not always as sharp as they might have been, although they im- proved with every game. Iim Long, Bob, Roley, Ralph Heap, and Iohn Brown supplied the power at the plate. David Brown, with his left-handed knuckle-ball, and George Mead, with his right- handed fastball, were the moundsmen. Some of my friends on the team played all summer and were 10098 ready to make a good record in the 1953 season when, for the first time, baseball was an offi- cial Olympic Conference sport. STANDARD SERVICI PM 6 Wawdtq 6 Under Suzanne Overman's leadership, the Pep Club had a successful season this year. Why, they made so much noise cheering the team, that my feeble squeaks were seldom heard! But that's not all-they've furnished one-third of the cost of the cheerleaders' uniforms, and assisted in planning those novel pep meetings that are the talk of the school. Barbara Buchen, vice-president, Patty Lay, secretary, Ianet Rogers, treasurer, and Mr. Price, their sponsor, assisted the president in promoting more interest in our athletic events. These fellows in the Varsity Club have been responsi- ble for the success of our team this year. Each member has earned a major letter and everyone in school, includ- ing ME, their favorite mascot, looks up to them as the main cogs in our big wheel of sports. Duane Spangler is president, and Kenny Vancil and Clair Myers assist him as vice-president and secretary treasurer, respective- ly. I wonder how long it will take me to become varsity material. Willadene Lovell was running from person to person, trying to collect overdue books and fines: Ioan Lovell and Donna Edwards were sorting the books from the bookbox Cl got out just in timelj, and Ethel and Leola were carrying the piles of new magazines from the office. Of course, these are just a few of the students who take care of these jobs during every study hall. Others on the staff take care of general library duties, but they really get a workout, too. These girls are forever stepping on my tail! They're always so busy running from room to room gathering up excuses, reading announcements, and attending to other important details that I'm scarcely noticed! Consequent- ly, when I run to the mailboxes for shelter, I find them so full of the mail these assistants place in them that l'm usually forced out in the open to be stepped on. But I'll have to admit they certainly help to keep the office run- ning smoothly. 6042? Zia! Office Qdzk NICHOLS 8: CO. MR. 8r MRS. G. E. She was much in demand as a vibraharp soloist, being one of the best in the field. Her untiring work with the choruses, sextette, and contest soloists showed how interested she was in the girls. She even had me running up and down the scales, when no one was around, of course! Mr. Shiplett, the band and boys' chorus director, was very friendly and cooperative with everyone. He is a talented vo- calist and plays the Cornet quite professionally. When we marched in Western's Homecoming parade, the band members looked so sharp and snappy that we really created a fine impression on all who saw us. t Our Buml on the March! Sedan! My senior friends, who were then juniors, had the time of their lives, hanging fish from the gym ceiling: and the crepe paper ship, which covered one wall, was truly a work of art. The theme of Under the Sea was further carried out by means of a rock garden and wha1e's mouth, which scared me to death-the strangest orchestral nois- es kept coming out of it! The girls in pastels, the boys in dark suits danced among the seaweeds, drank sea-foam punch, and finally left to get their coats from Davy Iones' locker.
