SPARTA STAR You must meet the deadline! That article will be front page! Are the mail- outs ready? Is your feature story in? Where is your editorial? The SPAHTA STAR, published bi-week- ly hy the Special English IV Class, has for its goal the reporting of all current news and happenings at school. This is the first year for the SPARTA STAR, and like all news- papers, she had her troubles. There were deadlines to meet: articles to be read, typed, and sent to the printer. Many copies were sent to other schools and servicemen. The SPARTA STAR is run much the same as any other newspaper. It has an editor, a feature editor, and a sports editor- Melba Barnes, Barbara Kirby, and Joanne Morris, respectively. To these people re- porters turn in articles which become news in the four-paged SPARTA STAR. Super- vising all this activity was Mrs. Mead, jour- nalism teacher and advisor. At the end, circulation. Have all the petitions been turned in? These are a few of the questions that the members of the Student Council ask and answer every day. The Homecoming Parade, the Christmas Dance, the fine assemblies, and many other activities are the outcome of a group of students work- ing as a council to provide a better school year. Other activities this year included the March of Dimes campaign, which re- What did Santa bring you? sulted in a total of 33236.31 for the polio fund. One of the primary purposes of the Student Council is that ot' fostering stu- dent participation in school government. Choosing a new name for the athletic teams, the school newspaper, the annualg arranging a program of extracurricular activitiesg conducting elections ol' student representatives, such as the cheerleaders, are examples of ways in which this goal was realized. To start their spinning, they elected as their officers-president, Donna Pauly vice presi- dent, Marcia Miller, secretary, Beverly Kreiderg treasurer, Carol Formhalsg parlia- mentarian, Melba Barnesg historian, Winno- nah Hoyle, chairman of public relations, Joanne Morrisg chairman of recreation, Clarabeth Pestleg and chairman of projects, Ruth Ann Heagy. Mrs. Walter Heagy was chosen as their Chapter Mother for the year. The organization had as its sponsor, Mrs. Cable. In this big spinning wheel there were sixty-one active members. Tlhey spun into many different activities during the year. Some of them were a party A. entertaining the F.F.A. boys, attending the F.H.A. Rally in Monmouth, Officers' Train- ing school in Macomb. a Mother and Daugh- ter Banquet, a wiener roast for new mem- bers, an assembly program during F.H.A. week, initiation ot' new members, and the installation of the new officers. At the F.H.A. Rally our chapter was in charge ol' the ice-breakers. Our chapter, one ol' the twenty-one in Section Nine, was honored to have Ruth Ann Heagy elected Section Chairman ot' Recrea- tion.
