Here was centered the school life of the students of Bushnell-Prairie City Iligh School. The year 1951-1952 was momentous: a new high school-a new team name-a new name for the school newspaper-a new name for the yearbook. After selecting Spartans as a team name, the students decided to adhere to the Greek theme by taking from the Greek alphabet the letters Beta Pi Sigma for the name of their new yearbook. Are the mail- outs ready? Is your feature story in? Where is your editorial? The SPAHTA STAR, published bi-week- ly hy the Special English IV Class, has for its goal the reporting of all current news and happenings at school. This is the first year for the SPARTA STAR, and like all news- papers, she had her troubles. There were deadlines to meet: articles to be read, typed, and sent to the printer. Many copies were sent to other schools and servicemen. The SPARTA STAR is run much the same as any other newspaper. It has an editor, a feature editor, and a sports editor- Melba Barnes, Barbara Kirby, and Joanne Morris, respectively. To these people re- porters turn in articles which become news in the four-paged SPARTA STAR. Super- vising all this activity was Mrs. Mead, jour- nalism teacher and advisor. At the end, circulation. As audio-visual education is very im- portant in today's educational system, it becomes a necessity to have trained students available to aid in running the motion pic- ture machine. Many ol' the teachers have learned to operate the projector, but there are a few who would rather have a student do this for them. Operating the projector is both a privilege the students enjoy and a means of developing reliability in those trust- ed with the equipment. Students who have learned the process ol' threading and operating the machine and, in some cases. repairing a broken reel are Leo llartlett, Ray litter, Bob llradlord, Ed- die Sammons, liill Vail, Duane Spangler. In the Tourney, the Spartans pulled a sur- prise by climbing from the sixth rated team in the county to third place, by beat- ing Bardolph 56-50 in the consolation game. Faced with the problem of weld- 6 Chalk talk. BASKETBALL ing two teams together, Coach John Law- son was constantly trying to find the right combination which would develop a winning team. Although the record com- piled was nothing sensational, the Spar- tans always played a hard fought game. Take it away! Go-gof Raise that score! Sound familiar? Why, ot' course! These are just a few ot' the many chants that have displayed the the Spartan spirit and proved to the boys that we were behind them, win or lose! This year the newly organized Pep Club ol' ll. P. C. had fifty-tive active members, with Dick lde, presidentg Lyle Walters, vice-president: David Brown. secretary: Leo Bartlett, treasurer: and Mrs. Phyllis llolcomb, sponsor. :H :Qt :Qi You've all seen those snappy little girls in the attractive hlue corduroy outtits with SPAIITANS across the front, con- stantly leading the crowd in yells, chants, and songs, to keep the spirit alive, the rooting high, and equally important, the booing low! These girls, Lorene Bagley, Rosie Cassell, Connie King, Joanne Morris, and Pat Wilson, were ehosen hy the two separate schools, and started early in the summer working on new yells and actions. Working right along with the Varsity Cheerleaders were those cute Cadet pep rousers in red and white corduroy outfits. Not heing chosen until after toothall sea- son, Joanne llarper, lleverly Kreider, and lletty lleinine' were rushed for time, hut they worked hard to make up yells and routines. B. As the name indicates. the G.A.A. is an organization tor all strong, healthy girls interested in sports activities. ln A. the fall an organized play night was held every Tuesday. When winter came, a basketball tournament was played. Later in the year a volleyball tournament was held. With the coming of spring, softball was the main event. Other activties in- cluded a Christmas exchange party and a stand at a basketball game. The G.A.A.. with fifty-four members, had a very active season with Joan Rogers as presidentg Bonnie Walters, vice-presi- dentg Lorene Bagley, secretary: and Rosie Cassell, treasurer.
